I was just browsing through the Zorn discs over at CDNow and noticed
something amusing. The track listing for the "Harras" CD is the Haiku
inside the booklet. Line 1 = track 1 etc. Just felt like sharing that bit
of useless information.

Yes, I have it and it'sof my favourite releases of last year.
Keneally has the capability to combine instrumental virtousity with
humor, but he does it far more delicate than his mentor, Frank Zappa.
I don't know if you have one of his earlier releases (Boil That Dust
Speck, Hat, Half Alive In Hollywood)or are familiar with his stunning
performance on the Zappa's Universe VIDEO (Not the CD!!!!!).
Compared to these releases Sluggo! is more full-grown: musicians show
their capabilities less prominent and the humor is subordinated to
the actual composition.
Oh yeah, the music sometimestoo really is kicking!!!

All Keneally albums are great.
He is one of my favorite contemporary guitar players.
He is a maybe the only or one of the few Zappa disciple .Lots of Frank`s
influenced arrengements but not a copy of Zappa`s music. To make it
clearer, keneally is( in some way ) to Zappa what Zappa was to Varese.

Yes, I have it. The music is just what you would expect, like the Parachute
Years. the book is packed with what appears to be many well written and
intelligent articles. Unfortunately I've only had time to skim, so I have no
more details. My copy cost about $20.00, so I'd say it's worth it to any of
you serious zornophiles.

And as a nice bonus, you get some reproductions of his scores
(some Naked City, one masada Tune, Roadrunner and some other

Subject: (Zorn List) ambachi/avenaim
Hi Julian,
To answer your question, I got the Ambachi/Avenaim CD a couple of weeks
ago (just after getting back from Up North) and I really like it. VERY
experimental - if you know Phlegm's stuff at all, much like what they do
in Phlegm. If you listen enough there are Jewish elements that come
through in certain sections. There are some pure weird noise bits, and
some really lovely bits, but mostly it's like how Lara (violin from
FourPlay) described Phlegm's music when she was (briefly) going out with
Robbie (Avenaim) - "It's like the soundtrack to your worst nightmare"
*grin* But I like that!
Totally weird, but increasingly listenable and interesting music... lots
of different sounds... as you can see, very hard to explain.
Sorry about the lame review; I'll listen to it more closely soon and try
for a better review. I recommend it anyway.
Hope to see you soon... Enjoyed playing with you guys up at Woodford
VERY MUCH and can't wait to do more, but I'll be in Melbourne this
coming week. [Ahem, for everyone else on the list: Julian plays in a
fantastic gypsy/klezmer group from Sydney called "Monsieur Camembert",
and whilst both them and my electric string quartet FourPlay were at the
Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland Australia a few weeks ago I did a
lot of jamming with them on cello, and played with them in one of their
sets.]

Subject: Phillip Johnston interview - Zorn/Chadbourne video
I have a tape copy this time of my most recent radio interview victim,
Phillip Johnston. Some folks may know him from the Microscopic Septet (of
which Zorn was an original member), his albums on Tzadik and Avant,
his silent film sdtrks, or his recent group the Transparent 4tet. Or
maybe some combination of the above.
Anyway, I don't know much about computers, but if anyone is interested in
this I can send it in the form of an email message. Maybe someone can
then magically convert it into post-able internet language.
Also, the Zorn/Chadbourne video I mentioned a few weeks ago has about 2-3
of the two doing free improv stuff at the K.F. This seems to be recent
footage. The video also has some other footage of Chadbourne playing
with various others, cut up in a fairly haphazard way, as well as
unreleased footage from his appearance in "Scream 2". No kidding. I
actually got dragged to that movie, but didn't know it was him b/c I
didn't know what he looked like. Anyway, the video is only $6 ppd. (30
min), so if anybody lost the address you can ask me (its not in front of
me right now)
Thats all.
