  44. chronicling his ventures into sound/performance art/
  45. literary efforts/photography etc.  
  46. Some of it leans toward the gruesome side and some
  47. of it leans toward the intellectual side but all in
  48. all to go through all "The Error", excerpts from
  49. his book in process, can occupy an enlightening
  50. couple of hours...   Disclaimer:  Duncan's site has
  51. an "Adult Material" Warning so don't interpret
  52. this email as suggesting you check out the site if
  53. you are not 18 or 21 or how ever old the law
  54. says you ought to be in your corner of the world.

  59. As for Bernard Gunter, when I saw him play 
  60. (his cds) at the Empty Bottle in Chicago
  61. a couple of years ago, some guy shouted out
  62. during the performance, cursing Gunter as 
  63. only a German who could come up with such
  64. confounded music.  I assume that many of you
  65. on the list will take this anecdotal 
  66. evidence as a recommendation.

  95. there is a tangentially related release that it is pretty impressive. Ralf
  96. Wehosky, who has a record on TO, commissioned a 5 CD remix set of his own
  97. work, 45 or 50 musicians from all around the world of experimental music.
  98. Aube, Rehberg and Bauer, and Bruce Russell are some of the bigger names. it's
  99. a similar concept to Thurston Moore's recent Root, but about five times as
  100. long and much more fluidly coherent, maybe because of closer supervision by
  101. the original musician. It's called Tulpas (Selektion) and it's priced pretty
  102. cheaply for a 5 CD set; FE has it for $32.

  174. It is true. But the list I gave was about the very first ones. The ones you
  175. mention are from the second wave of French improvisers who came out in the 
  176. '70s. Which makes me think that as far as paternity is concerned, contemporary
  177. music is not to be dismissed (at least this father was at home :-).

  256. written by Budd, but it is noted that the track was "Composed FOR Marion
  257. Brown". Brown indeed does play on the track, and it is wonderful, as is the
  258. rest of the album. Highly recommended if you can find it.

  365. Toop has actually since compiled *three* subsequent volumes; they were subtitled
  366. "Ocean of Sound" but not emphatically, as they weren't as much designed to
  367. interface with the book as was the first CD set.

  369. The first sequel was a comp that focused on vocal music, "Crooning on Venus."
  370. This had Yma Sumac, Robert Wyatt, Mick Harris/Martyn Bates, and lots of others I
  371. don't remember 'cause I don't at present own a copy.  (Virgin UK AMBT13)

  373. This was followed by "Booming on Pluto," subtitled "Electro for Droids," a
  374. history of electro music from early NY and Detroit days to (almost) now,
  375. including tracks by Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambaata, Mantronix, A Guy Called
  376. Gerald, George Clinton, etc.  (Virgin UK AMBT20)

  378. And volume four, "Guitars on Mars," includes Beefheart, Czukay, Sonic Youth, Joe

  424. as for the sound environmental issue, a friend of mine strongly
  425. recommended us to check out the following cd set:
  426. 'music for living sound/ cool sounds from real life' by yann tomita (for
  427. this cd, he says the music of yin & yang tomita... whatever!? but do not
  428. confuse him with isao tomita! big mistake!!)
  429. the cd set is consisted of 3 discs & 1 cd-rom. 3 discs features
  430. compositions by tomita and other composers, but all arranged by tomita.
  431. the cd-rom features sounds probably from tomita's personal archive
  432. (field recordings etc.?!), accompanied by real views...
  433. they are 4 discs together, so i wouldn't list titles here. however, you
  434. can check them at http://ns.forlife.co.jp/yt/yt_musi_al01.html, if
  435. interested.

  437. anyway, i found the cd# from elsewhere - it's FLCF-3715.)

  546. I'm still a recovering newbie myself, so maybe Im not the best one to
  547. be making suggestions, but all the PainKiller stuff (Zorn, Bill
  548. Laswell, Mick Harris from Scorn/Lull/Napalm Death) is excellent -- if
  549. you can afford it, go ahead and get the 4xCD "Complete Studio
  550. Recordings" box set on Tzadik, if not, "Guts of a Virgin/Buried
  551. Secrets" on Earache is probably best to start with: lots of bashing
  552. from Harris/Laswell, lots of shrieking (both voice and sax) from Zorn,
  553. countered with a few more atmospheric kinds of things.

  556. check out The Boredoms, if you haven't already.

  579. Like someone already said, the Naked City albums are essential, specially
  580. "Radio" and "Grand Guignol". The others will either disappoint you or
  581. absolutely transform you.
  582. "Radio" is alot like the self-titled, but, IMO, much more cohese and
  583. conceptual. "Grand Guignol" is really brutal.
  584.  
  585. Also reccomend Zorn's "Spillane", which features many many guests and is
  586. considered a masterpiece. After you get Spillane, get "The Bribe" which is
  587. considered the follow-up to Spillane. It features Frisell and Horvitz from
  588. Naked City.
  589.  
  590. Another great one is "The Big Gundown", with 40-50 guests. It's music by
  591. Ennio Morricone arranged and transformed by Zorn.
  592.  
  593. In a more pure jazzier vein, I fully reccomend the Masada quartet. This is a
  594. must. If you have never heard of them, it's a quartet consisting of Zorn on
  595. alto, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass and Joey Baron on drums. I
  596. think someone on this list once referred to it as what Ornette Coleman would
  597. have done if he were jew. Free jazz upon klezmer melodies. They have ten
  598. albums - pick any one.

  617. Like Felix, I recommend you any of the 10 Masada albums but my prefer 
  618. goes to the Bar Kokhba album - Masada Chamber Ensembles. One of the 
  619. beautifullest melodies ever wrote by Zorn. Kristallnacht is also a great 
  620. album inspired by Jewish music.

  622. My favorite Naked City album is Absinthe, it's so...noir. But You can 
  623. pick any of their albums, they're all so good.

  625. For more 'traditionnal' jazz, you MUST buy News for Lulu, with Zorn, 
  626. Frisel and George Lewis. It's simply perfect.
