I know The Wire has raved about this record on several occasions of
late -- and about Harriot in general. I'm wondering if anybody's
willing to second them, b/c www.blackstar.co.uk is doing free shipping
to anywhere right now, so it's like $15.

I picked this disc up, along with the other two recent Harriott reissues
(Abstract and Free Form) on my recent trip to London. I've only listened to
each of them once or twice, but they didn't make a huge impact on me. The
Wire's writers have compared them favorably to the roughly contemporaneous
Atlantic Ornette sides or the Giuffre/Bley/Swallow material, which I don't
hear. all three are nice records, but none have blown me away like This Is Our
Music, Change Of The Century, Fusion/Thesis, or Free Fall did when I first
heard them. I'd be interested to hear opinions from people who have lived with
these discs longer than I have, however. I have a feeling they still could
grow on me somewhat.

There are probably some real audio clips of the Los Cubanos cd available at
some online cd retailers, this should give you an indication of what the music
is like. Also, there is a nice long Los Cubanos MP3 clip at the following
site:
FTP directory /Music at
rubagalo.caltech.edu
(ftp://rubagalo.caltech.edu/Music)
It's about 10 megs. Just follow the link to Ribot. Also, this is an
incredible archive of other live MP3's, including Zony Mash, Scofield, Charlie
Hunter, lots of Medeski Martin and Wood, and a few others probably of little
interest to readers of this list.

I second the good remarks about Big Satan. Ducret and Rainey thouroughly
impress, especially on "Scrap Metal."
I have to say that Ducret's solo disc "Un Certain Malaise" on Screwgun is
excellent. The W&W "D=E9tail" is acoustic, as Paco said, and I have to say
that It doesn't hit as hard as UCM (that may be obvious). "D=E9tail" is goo=
d
though.
"Lust Corner" is a album of duets of No=EBl with Eugene Chadbourne and Marc
Ribot Always two guitars (except a small bit of banjo). This disc is ver
good as well. There is one EC tune at the end of the disc that I really
ended up liking where EC sings and No=EBl and EC play guitars. The tunes on
here are quite diffrent in some cases and turn out to be interesting and
reward repeated listenings.
Sorry, I haven't heard the Gary Thomas.
My 2 cents.

He cannot play the drum kit. He has problems with coordination. I saw him
back in December with Melvin Gibbs and Umezu, and last Saturday doing improv
sets with a few other musicians, including Mark Stewart. He was playing a
drum machine/ sampler, and also guitar. I never talked to him before his
illness, but I think his speech may have slowed down a bit. He seemed to be
in good spirits, all things considered. Luckily his mind is still there. He
will be at Tonic again on the 15th, this time playing new compositions.

Subject: The Zornies
Hey, it's award time again, and time for all the corporate big-wigs to pat
themselves on the backs for a job well done.
Well, I'm tired of watching Mase and Puff Daddy take all the friggin'
awards, so I'm gonna start an award system for the Zorn-List.
Tentatively called the Zornies (unless someone can come up with a better
name (Please!)), here's how they work.
The first step is the nominations. I've set up a bunch of categories and
everyone is free to nominate as many items in each category as they like.
So if you had ten albums that you think should be nominated for best album
of the year, go ahead!
I'll tally the nominations and the top four or five nominees will be
presented for a formal vote. Then the votes will be tallied and the
winners will be announced.
If you're up for that, mail me (risser@goodnews.net) (***NOT THE LIST!***
Go respond and change it RIGHT NOW!) with your nominees for the following
categories, and remember this is for 1998:
- -------------------------------------
Best solo performer:
Best group of performers (two or more, who consistently play together as a
group):
Best meeting of performers (two or more, playing together, but not as a
consistent group):
Best New Artist (someone who recently came into critical acclaim in '98
though they could have been working in the industry previously):
Best Album of 1998:
Best Song of 1998:
Best Reissued Album:
Best Reissued Box Set (multiple albums):
Best Retrospective (Single Artist Compilation):
Best Various Artist Compilation:
Best Packaging:
Best Liner Notes:
(The following categories include both new albums and reissues for 1998)
Best DnB/Techno/Dance:
Best Improvisational:
Best Free Jazz:
Best Standard Jazz:
Best Soundtrack:
Best Classical:
Best Electro-Acoustic or Computer (non-dance):
Best Pop, Rock, or Rock-Based:
Best Spoken Word:
Best Noise:
Best Ambient:
Best Remix (album or song):
(The following are for Live Performances in 1998. Please attempt to
include approximate date and venue.)
Best Improvisational performance:
Best Free Jazz performance:
Best Standard Jazz performance:
Best DnB/Techno/Dance performance:
Best Classical performance:
Best Rock/Rock-Based performance:
Best Spoken Word performance:
(The following are meant to honor artists that had releases, re-releases or
tours in 1998, preferably artists that performed consistently well
throughout the year.)
Best Sax Player:
Best Brass Player:
Best Drummer:
Best Guitarist:
Best Piano/Keyboard:
Best Bass Player:
Best Sampler/Turnables:
Best Vocals:
Best Remixer:
====
Last but not least,
if there's some other category that you think is missing, feel free to
invent it and nominate. If enough others concur, it'll be included this
year, otherwise, it may show up next year. Assuming this works.
Nominations will close at the end of next week, basically once I finish
tallying.
Remember, respond to ***ME*** (risser@goodnews.net), NOT the list!!
Thanks,
Peter

A New York record shop you'll love: Downtown Music Gallery (on 5th St.
between 2nd and 3rd aves.)
In Boston: On Newbury Street there's always Tower Records. Right down the
street is Newbury Comics which often has some of the classics (e.g. Kind Of
Blue) new for $8.99. There are a couple more used shops on the same block
and one block east too. CD Spins (kinda sucks) and Mystery Train (pretty
good).
In Kenmore square (which is close to the Newbury Street area) are Nuggets,
a decent used shop and Planet, a better one (If it's still there, I heard
there was a fire in the building??).
In Cambridge: In Harvard square there is another Tower and another Newbury
Comics as well as an HMV. For used items, Massachusetts ave. is a good
place to start. There's another Mystery Train on Mass ave and farther out
of Harvard square there's one (the name slips my mind now) down below
street level in a sort of strip of shops. Even farther out near Central
Square is a place called Cheapo Records where I have twice made some good
scores (Gerry Hemingway Electro-Acoustic for $5.99, Ray Anderson Trio for
$4.99, and Previte Moscow Circus for $2.99 (I lost all of them on the
flight home!)).
I hope this helps some...
Dan
PS: I posted this to the list so maybe you can save it if you want for a
time you're going to Boston.

Figure there must be one or two Adamson fans around here. I've managed
to accrue a few records by him over the years (favorites being 'Moss

knowing much about the guy. He seems, at least to those of us on this

he perform live? Ever in the US? Has he done any actual soundtracks (as
opposed to his normal soundtracky output) other than 'Delusion'? Any
info appreciated.

Adamson has a number of tracks on the Lost Highway soundtrack. They are
quite similar to Angelo Badalamenti's tracks on the soundtrack ie groovy
ambient kind of stuff with the occasional brassy outburst. Just for your
information, it also features David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing
Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson and Jobim's "How Insensitive". A very strange
mixture indeed.

Seconded. Downtown Music Gallery has a superior selection of jazz, Downtown,
Canterbury and rock stuff, new and used at low prices, and carries a few
notable exclusives, and owner Bruce Gallanter is among this scene's true
heroes. By the way, for the rest of you around the world, the Downtown Music
Gallery website is now (mostly) up at http://www.DTMGallery.com
That said, you'd be foolish not to visit Other Music, which is where I do most
of my shopping for alternative rock, electronica, Euro-improv and experimental
stuff, and the staff is knowledgeable and fabulous. Other Music is perhaps my
ulitmate record store for the diversity of its coverage. It's on East 4th St.
between Broadway and Lafayette, on the north side of the same block as the
downtown Tower records. (If you're into such things, a few doors west of Other
Music is Anime Crash, the city's best Japanimation specialty store.) The Other
Music website, if you please? http://www.othermusic.com
If you're into drum'n'bass stuff at all and don't find what you're after in the
better than basic selection at Other Music, Breakbeat Science is one of the
best stores for that kind of thing anywhere, stocks the latest, hottest and
rarest imports, and is somewhere in the same neighborhood, at 335 E. 9th St.
(which is I *think* between 2nd and 1st Ave. or perhaps a little further
east). Again, a website for those who can't come to town...
http://www.breakbeatscience.com
Hip hop enthusiasts, especially vinyl fetishists, should not miss out on Fat
Beats on 6th Ave. just above 8th St. While you're on the west side, a bit
south of that store, on tiny little Carmine Street (it's just a stone's throw
west of the intersection of 6th Ave. and Bleecker St.), are two further
interesting stores, Sonic Groove (a slightly lesser Breakbeat Science) and
Rockit Scientist (interesting selection, especially if you're into prog or
psychedelia).
If you've hit several or even all of the above listed and still haven't found
what you're after, you would be well advised to check out Mondo Kim's on St.
Mark's Place (8th St. between Bowery and 2nd Ave. - in other words, three
blocks up from DMG). They have very fine selections from practically every
genre mentioned thus far, plus an extremely extensive selection of used CDs, a
second floor of new and used vinyl, and an incredible selection of both common
and extremely arcane video (the Kim's chain started in video rental and then
diversified, and the three owners of Other Music are Kim's alumni). One of the
coolest things they do is discount to (on average) $10.99 their Top Ten of the
week, where you're as likely to find Photek as Fahey, Squarepusher as Zorn, DJ
Pita as Belle and Sebastian, Sonic Youth as Lee Perry, as, as, as, you get it.
Lots of fun.
For shows in New York City while you're here, check in advance at New York
Today, the arts and entertainment website run by the New York Times. It's a
good bet, and the guy in charge of the music section is "one of us." You'll
find it at http://www.nytoday.com
Also, Tonic listings are online at http://www.tonic107.com (I got it right
this time, Jody!) and Das KnitFac is at http://www.knittingfactory.com
although when last I checked the listings for *January's* Alterknit Theater and
Old Office shows were still not posted (and this was in fact yesterday...).
As for Boston, on my last trip to the Boston area back in June the stores that
impressed me most were in Cambridge: Twisted Village (kinda like Forced
Exposure as a retail outlet, and perhaps the one the name of which Dan couldn't
recall... it is a fairly claustrophobic, low ceilinged basement) and Mars (a
really interesting and eclectic mix of stuff). But damned if I know the
addresses (Twisted was in Harvard Square, Mars midway between Harvard Square
and Central Square on Massachusetts Ave.?).
And as Dan mentioned, Cheapo in Central Square (or was it Mr. Cheapo? Uncle
Cheapo?) is probably worthwhile if you're a serious vinyl fetishist with a LOT
of time to spend digging, or if you're a very lucky CD fan (as Dan evidentally
was!). While in Central Square, stop over at the Middle East and have an
excellent fallafel while you're in the neighborhood.
As for gigs, I'd recommend checking out the Boston Phoenix before you arrive,
at http://www.bostonphoenix.com
Will a kindly Bostonian help our Gabriel with more details now?
