Subject: John Zorn Dates???
Hi Folks:
I'm new to this listerv, and wanted to say hello, and look to you good
people for some guidance. I just recently discovered the music of Zorn and
his usual band mates, and I have to admit I've been blown away by every note.
I'm especially impressed with his Naked City, Masada and other projects. It's
led me to appreciate Joey Baron, Bill Frisell, MMW, Dave Douglas, and most
recently Uri Caine, Marc Feldman, Drew Gress...and a bunch more.
I had the pleasure of seeing Uri Caine's Mahler works performed in Philly
with a real slammin' group which included several of the names mentioned
above. I can't even describe the feelings that we're invoked by these
musicians, especially during the "freer" portions of the show. Thus...here is
the question...
Where can I find dates and gigs with these musicians. I'm DYING to see Zorn
live, and while I'm in Philly, and the scene isn't like New York, I'd be
willing to make the jaunt up from the city of brotherly shove.
Many thanks in advance...and to those who haven't heard, Uri Caine, John
Medeski and an 18 Piece Big Band from Boston will be playing some wack and
exciting music at the Knitting Factory on January 18th. :)
Take Care
Ryan

Subject: Bang & Braxton
In a frenzy of Boxing Day shopping I picked up a variety of new CDs
including Billy Bang's "Outline No. 12". Recorded in 1982 and originally
on Celluloid, it's a improvised/jazz/new music piece featuring Bang.
Jason Hwang and Joseph Hailes on violins, Frank Lowe on soprano sax;
Charles Tyler, Henri Warner and David Murray on clarinets, Khan Jamal on
vibes and Sunny Murray and John Fuller on percussion.
It features three excellent pieces with find work from all concerned.
However, to my ears, it sounds very similar to Anthony Braxton's
Composition No. 193, which I have on a Braxton House CD "Tentet (New
York) 1996". I attended that memorable performance when it was
recorded at the Knitting Factory that night with a band made up of
Braxton, J.D. Parran, Brandon Evans and Andre Vida on reeds, Roland
Dahinden (trombones), Gwen Laster and Jacquie Carrasco (violins); Ted
Reichman (accordion); Joe Fonda (bass) and Kevin Norton (percussion, vibes
etc).
I've gone into great detail about personnel and instrumentation because I'm
wondering if any one else -- perhaps someone with more of a "classical"
background than mine -- has noted the similarities?
I'm not accusing Braxton of "appropriation of sound", but wonder if he
ever heard Bang's compositions before creating his own? Or am I all wet
and am just seeing a congruence in sound because of the similarities in
instrumentation?
Any thoughts on this?

Well (not having heard that particular Braxton piece nor heard the Band in
about 10 years) another significant aspect of both (guessing that the
Braxton is a Ghost Trance piece) is that they both use a steady pulse,
more rhythmically like classic minimalism, perhaps, than like most
chamber/post/free/whatever jazz. Whether the Bang directly influenced
Braxton, I don't know, but the ideas that they both use have been "in the
air" for a while.
(... and now I wish I could finish using my CD-ROM drive for real work so
I could slap in the Splatter Trio/Debris Braxton disc that i got (along
with waaaaaay too many other CDs) in Texas last week...)

"funny games" is an amazing film - an extended allegory/diatribe on
violence in the media. it was one of my 2 or 3 favorite films from 1997.
however, zorn didn't score the film. haneke just makes use of some naked
city songs from "torture garden."

Subject: Recent goodies
Xmas week splurge:
(Various) Ghana Drums of Death Avant
Some one here (Jason?) raved about this a while back; deservedly so. A
great recording of incendiary funeral drumming from Ghana, hypnotic in
its intensity. Possibly the finest recording of West African
percussion that I've come across (though, I hasten to add, I'm no
expert in the field)
James Tenney Selected Works 1961-69 Artifact
Thanks to the listers who recommended this one. An overview of
Tenney's work from that period including that harbinger of
plunderphonia, 'Collage #1 (Blue Suede)'. It's an impressive enough
piece today; I can only wonder what would've been the reaction to it
in 1961--I can't imagine it would've been _heard_ the same way.
'Fabric for Che' is a strong, Xenakisian roar and, FWIW, 'For Ann
(Rising)' which is an acoustical illusion giving one the queasy
impression of a perpetually rising note, actually made my wife
nauseous! Boy, Zorn never accomplished that!
David Shea Classical Works Tzadik
Two pieces: 'Chamber Symphony # 1' performed by the Ictus ensemble,
including a sampler player, though his contributions are
(intenitonally, one assumes) difficult to pick out. It's a moody and
generally quiet work, with some Feldman influence. 'The Voice Suite',
performed by Friedlander and Pugliese with Shea sampling a couple of
Ictus members as well as playing piano, is much more effective, Shea
allowing his Hermann aspect to come to the fore. Nice stuff, though
not up to 'Mort aux Vaches' and 'Hsi-Yu Chi' caliber, imho.
Aaly Trio Stumble Wobbly Rail
With guest Vandermark, a live performance from January, 1998 and a
largely fantastic one. Two KV originals, both exquisitely slow and
brooding and a cover of 'Song for Che' are the highlights. All the
playing is fine (I may become a Gustafsson fan yet!) but bassist
Jansen stands out.
Lois V Vierk Simoom XI
Been meaning to pick this up for about 7 years. Three pieces for
massed like instruments: 'Go Guitars' for 5 electric guitars, 'Cirrus'
for 6 trumpets and 'Simoom' for 8 celli. The latter's the prize, Ted
Mook's overdubbed celli creating a wonderful whirlpool, perhaps
somewhat reminiscent of Adams' 'Shaker Loops'.
Massacre Funny Valentine Tzadik
Improv power trio (Frith, Laswell, Hayward) that occasionally hits
stride, but sometimes sounds like it's treading water. Decent enough;
had it been issued 10 years ago, one might sit up and take notice. Now
it sounds a bit like just one more in the genre. Other opinions may
differ.

Although, someone posted before does anyone have any details about the

I didn't see this show, but perhaps it was Catherine Jauniaux? She's
performed with some of these performers before on a fairly regular basis
(esp. Mori). If it was her, she has performed on several CDs and has been
active for years. I'm not an especially big fan of improvised vocalists,
but I can strongly recommend an early album which featured her prominently,
Aksak Maboul's second album Un peu de l'ame des bandits from 1980. This
album was one of Fred Frith and Chris Cutler's first excursions after Henry
Cow, and has free improv along with cut-up compositions. Jauniaux scats
along with a Bo Diddley beat on the opening track, a wonderful performance.

The Necks - 17th and 31st of January
Bobby Previte - 2nd and 3rd of February
The little booklet I'm looking at says Previte is performing Miles Davis'

This is his "The Horse" project. He has been playing it on a regular basis
at the KF since (at least) 1996.
According to Steve Smith, Bobby intends to put out a record of this project
on his label.

The response to this was mixed. Younger people seemed to be impressed by
