Mr. Adamson was an original member of the seminal Magazine led by Howard
Devoto in the late 70's and later as a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
He's also a wonderful human being with a pervy obsession for hard boild
literature, and soundtracks. Check out "Odeipus Schmedipus" on Mute. His best.

Subject: Re: Barry Adamson
Oddly enough, his biggest fan in terms of soundtrack work seems to be Trent
Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame), who not only commissioned a couple of
tracks for David Lynch's _Lost Highway_ (which actually fit in with the
Badalamenti material, unlike the obvious fanboy flogging of Bowie's "I'm
Deranged" at other points in the film), but also worked some of his older
material into a weird little composite piece that accompanied one of Tom
Sizemore's better scenes in _Natural Born Killers_. Now if only Trent would
release a new album, go on tour, and take Barry on tour with him... (which
is a quick way of saying that he doesn't seem to play many shows in Europe
or abroad.)
He's also done a couple of really unusual remixes for an equally unusual
batch of musicians (Einsturzende Neubauten and Nitzer Ebb being the two
that come to mind immediately), etc. etc. There's a reasonably decent
Adamson site on the Web at http://www2.southwind.net/~markw/barry, though
don't be surprised if the reviews at said site are just a tad bit
overwhelmingly positive... Mark's like that.

Hey, remember y'all,
You don't have to nominate someone for every field if you can't think of anyone.
More importantly, you *can* nominate *multiple* entries.
If you thought there were twelve really supreme albums this year, nominate them all!
This way, we get lots of overlap and good numbers.
If you want another copy of the submission list, send *me* a message at risser@goodnews.net.
Anyway,
we've got some good responses so far, but, obviously, the more we get, the better the results will be.
Also, nobody came up with a better idea for a name than, "The Zornies" yet!

Friends of Zony Mash!
Well everyone if you were there than you already know that Zony Mash ended
the year with a big bang in the Northwest! Without a doubt the three most
exciting of the year came and went last week. Fortunately all was caught on
tape as the band debuted a handful of amazing new tunes including a warped
cover of Devo's classic WHIP IT! (Look for a tape tree/offer to come in
January).
Wednesday's show at the Rainbow in Seattle reached a peak when Briggan
Krauss, who had just come home for the holiday from NYC, joined the band for
extended versions of Bad Traffic and Daylight. Thursday's show at the
Roseland Grill in Portland was highlighted by many smooth transitions, a few
more new tunes and an all-time great version of Stompin At The Cranium.
Friday was the icing on the cake for sure. Eugene is clearly a special place
for Wayne & Co. Rockin Teenage Combo (have you heard them yet?) opened up
the night with an excellent set of groovy compositions and even had Tim
Young join them on stage for a few songs. As fine a performance as that was,
this was clearly Zony Mash's night! The band played two long sets performing
at their peak of power, and the crowd loved every minute of it. The night
which ended with a great encore of Cadillac Ranch and Withdrawal Symptoms,
left everyone feeling that 1999 is bound to be an amazing year to watch Zony
Mash in action....
Which brings us to our holiday gift of an announcement to the local fans of
Zony Mash. The band is playing in Seattle twice a week in the month of
January! Every Monday at the newest and hippest joint in town the 700 Club
the band will stretch out all night in an intimate setting, expect long
shows with lots of new material and exciting surprises. I've heard some good
rumors already. Every Wednesday (except the first) the band will perform
acoustically at the very classy Baltic Room on Capital Hill in Seattle.
We've avoided the label Zony Mash Unplugged but that's exactly what you'll
get! The band is planning on taking this time to develop new material and is
looking ahead to recording and touring in the spring.
Thanks again to everyone who came out and supported the band this year. I'm
happy to say that we can all look forward to great things in the coming
year. See you on the other side. Have a happy holiday!
Smiles,
The mgmt

Would that be the Mark Stewart who was in ThePopGroup? If so, what else is
he up to nowadays?
I also noticed there's a book out called Plunderphonics. It's mentioned
John Zorn's name is in there (as well as Residents, Zappa,...). Can anyone
tell me more about it?

Amazon doesn't turn up anything with this title, but a few years ago there
was a book by a Montreal-based journalist, Andrew Jones entitled
Plunderphonics, 'Pataphysics + Pop Mechanics. If this is what you've seen,
it's a fairly entertaining but superficial look at 24 musicians/groups.
Other chapters include Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Henry Threadgill, Zeena
Parkins, etc. Many of the chapters originally appeared in Option magazine,
which perhaps gives you an idea of the level of the work. There's no
chapter on Zappa, however (although one of the sections is named after a
Mothers album). The biggest plus on the book is the lack of material on
many of these musicians elsewhere, but don't expect anything in depth.

Melt Banana are mostly spastic grindnoise I guess. The vocals are just
shrieking and everything is scattered nicely :) Their first album (the
name escapes me) is really good though I have not yet found a copy
around MI so I guess I will have to mail order. They also have another
album (Scratch and Stitch) and a few 7"s out. I had the pleasure of
playing a show with them in MI about a year or so ago. They were just
amazing live with tons of energy. They were really nice too (even if we
could not understand each other :)Since I just got a job I guess I can
go searching for more stuff from them now....

I think all are out of print except the Tzadik and Avant discs:
Dragon Blue: Hades Park (1998 Avant)
Tenko/Ikue Mori: Death Praxis: Mystery (1998 Tzadik)
Tenko: Dragon Blue (1993 Sound Factory - Hong Kong label now defunct)
[live versions of songs from the 4 albums immediately below w/
Otomo Yoshihide, Kato Hideki, Yoshida Tetsuya, Tsuneo Imahari]
Tenko/Ikue Mori: Death Praxis (1993 What Next? - out of print, but
10 of 17 tracks included as bonus on Mystery (above)
Tenko: At The Top Of Mt. Brocken (Rec Rec 1991)
[w/ same musicians as Dragon Blue + others including the late
Motoharu Yoshizawa]
Tenko: Slope (Rec Rec 1986 lp - perhaps CD also?)
[w/Frith, Cora, Parkins, Marclay, Arto, Rothenberg, Kamura,
Horvitz, Moss, Kramer, Licht, Moko]
Mizutama-Shobodan (aka Polka Dot Fire Brigade): Manten-Ni Akre-Hanabira
(Sky Full Of Red Petals - I've seen also translation: Red Petals Full In
The Sunset) (Kinniku-Bijo (Muscular Woman) Records 1985)
[5 piece 'rock' band "self-produced under the direction of Fred
Frith"]
The Honeymoons: Warau-Shinwa (Laughing Myth) (Kinniku-Bijo 1982)
[Tenko & Kimura]
Mizutama-Shobodan: Otome-No-Anori-Wa Da!Da!Da! (The Virgin's Prayers)
(Kinniko-Bijo 1981) [1st album]
There's at least one other I've never seen - "La Legende de la Pluie(?)"
and there are Tenko tracks -- Honeymoons, Mizutama Shobodan and Fake (with
Tenko, Haino Keiji, Frith, Chie Mukai, etc.) on the Welcome To
Dreamland compilation. Anyone else in Portland want to start a Tenko
discography?

Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Kang live for the first time the other
night, in duet with Ted Reichman at Tonic (also, FWIW, caught him, or
rather his hat, on SNL last night). They performed a short set of Greek
and Arabic inflected pieces opening for Guy Klucevsek (who was his
usual, incredible self). I was extrememly impressed with Kang's playing,
subtly nuanced, with great care taken regarding dynamics and with a
surprisingly strong romantic streak. In fact, as far as improvising
violinists go, I find he and Feldman to be the most soulful since the
great Leroy Jenkins.
So, aside from '7 NADEs', which I like a good deal and think shows
several signs of brilliance, could someone recommend/describe other Kang
releases? I understand his output varies pretty widely, but haven't
actually heard projects other than the above. Thanks.
While I'm here, a friend played a song for me by a Japanese pop vocalist
named Kahimi Karie ('Good Morning World') that was quirkily charming,
reminding me of what little I've heard by Kuriko Kubo or Picky Picnic.
Anyone else familiar with her?

If anyone can help me with getting these It would be much appreciated!

You should check out Otomo's web site at
http://www2.gol.com/users/miyuki/yotomo/yotomo.html, which includes a page
devoted to the consume project. The page is slightly incorrect on the
discography, as volume 1 is released on ReR and readily available
domestically.

Sharp's "Digital" also appears the CD "Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup" containing
Sharp's pieces for strings performed by the Soldier String Quartet, on the
SST label.
(I'm printing out the score now. Thanks for the pointer!)
