Subject: Merzbow documentary film (gross content)
(Non-Zorn content, or maybe you should read this in relation to recent
discussion about the Leng Tch'e artwork)
On Wednesday, I went to see South-African film maker Ian Kerkhof's new
documentary film on Merzbow. Apparently, it was made for Dutch TV, since the
VPRO was credited at the end. If this ever makes it to TV, I am sure I live
in the most tolerant country in the world (The Netherlands).
The documentary was split into several parts, each detailing a particular
interest and influence of Merzbow. I came in late, during what must have been
the second or third part. It dealt with Merzbow's fascination for eroticism,
pornography, and SM. Merzbow was shown at his house, and walking the streets
of Tokyo, while talking and philosophizing about these subjects. The filming
was decidedly avant-garde, as was the overlaying of his monologues with
Merzbow's music. Merzbow talked at length about the importance of George
Bataille. The documentary then went on to show various depictions of SM and
bondage stills, each accompanied by 1-second blasts of noise. Extremely
graphic, and some of the images were quite shocking, to say the least. However,
the most shocking part - which made some people leave - came when they showed
excerpts of a video Merzbow had directed of a young girl commiting harakiri.
They showed quite a bit - too much for most, I reckon. The young girl was
shown taking off her blouse very quietly. She proceeded to take up a short
sword, winding a piece of cloth over the blade. She then proceeded to slice
open her stomach, from left to right, all the while screaming silently. Blood
was gushing over the floor, and after a while her entrails started coming out,
spilling over the blood-covered floor. Finally, the girl bent over in agony
and died screaming. This scene was so graphic, that there was some discussion
afterwards whether this was real or fake - some people insisted that this
must have been a snuff video. Anyway, it was by far the most repelling thing
I've ever seen.
The third part was called "Merzbow on Marcel Duchamp", but apart from drawing
on Duchamp's idea of spiralling figures it didn't feature one word on the man.
The director was present, and there was room for questions and comments after
the film. Strangely, he refused to comment on the authenticity of the harakiri
scene. Having known Masami Akita for many years, he considered him one of the
great philosophers of culture of our time, and an excellent critic of Japanese
culture.
All in all, an overwhelming experience to say the least. As a documentary,
I don't think Kerkhof could have done a better job. There was a lot of insight
into the psyche and motivations of Merzbow, and the form of the film, which
was demanding for the viewer, was well-chosen and well-executed.
So, if you ever get a chance to see this, don't hesitate. It will give you
some feeling for the dichotomy at the heart of Japanese culture.
Frankco.

I'm pretty sure that it's not actually out yet. the last I heard, it had been
bumped back until next year because of packaging delays.

Subject: Zorn's Top 10 Lists
Hello, I was wondering if anyone remembered any of the suggestions that
Zorn included in his now defunct Top 10 lists that used to be on the
Tzadik web-page. I am interested in any titles that you can remember. I
bought a few of the titles that were on the list (100% Cotton, Kagel's
Exotica, and Marcelino Guerra's Rapindey) and was very happy with all of
them. Always happy to hear a suggestion and I know that Zorn has very
eclectic tastes and is probably a good person to take a reccommendation
from. E-mail me privately, or if others would be interested we could open
this up as a discussion topic for the list.
Thanks alot in advance

Good, a serious response, thank you very much.
These covers always bring to mind that THeads line, "this ain't no
disco..." but sung with the gnashing of teeth. The images are always
treated respectfully, proffered beautifully, as if they were a kind of
gift -- a very serious gift.

This is a photo from the Burns Collection (they've got a site, but I
must've dumped the link last time I swept my bookmarks). It's called,
surprise!, "Head on Platter." My own "depth of story" meanderings had me
imagining it as the end-result of a torture session, probably Japan,
probably WWII. Perhaps because of the many other Oriental images
included with these discs... but anyway it's more "innocent" than that.
A carving done by a Med-student in an anatomy lab. Almost makes me want
to go back to school. It's the look on that man's face that floors me,
as if he's about to say something.
> (If so, another layer of meaning is added).
The more the merrier. Anyone ever been to the Mutter Museum in
Philadelphia? It's a museum of Medical Pathology, an incredible
silencing place that drops people to their knees and makes them look
agape at one another wordlessly and in awe. This head in particular puts
me there. There's a long tradition of using body parts in "tableaux"
from the early days of museums. There are a number of books (pictorial)
on the subject, and in the last half of "Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of
Wonder," author L. Weschler speaks extensively of these tableaux.

I'm going to jump onto the tail end of this thread. I seem to be a David
Shea completist and have what I believe to be everything of his, including
that 12" of Land of Pure Illusions and the Mort Aux Vaches limited cd. I
think he's brilliant, not just in his ability as a musician but in the way
he manages to make seemingly unrelated genres fit together. He could put
milk and lemon juice together and it wouldn't curdle. For instance, on his
latest cd, Poem De Nuestra Signora, he beat boxes over a traditional
European traditional music, and it sounds RIGHT. Anyway, for all those who
hesitate to buy another Shea ablum, here is my suggestion: Shock Corridor,
Prisoner, Classical Works, and I are all great, but the essential albums
are Hsi-Yu Chi, Tower of Mirrors, Satyricon, The Poem De Nuestra Signora,
and his collaboration with DJ Grazhoppa, Down River Up Stream. Those
limited edition live "sub rosa session" discs that he shares with the likes
of Scanner, Main, Charles Hayward, etc are all good, but the Shea tracks
are the only ones worth keeping the cd's for. If you manage to find the
Mort Au Vaches cd, POUNCE ON IT. It is two pieces for solo sampler, one
from Hsi-Yu Chi and the other from Satyricon. Excellent.

Well, I saw Jon live as part of the Tzadik showcase at the knit last
year, and I can tell you she's a Japanese girl (aged 15-20 ?, hard to
tell). She came on stage dressed up as Bambi and played the harmonium
while singing, accompagned by a Japanes guy dressed as a horse
playing toys and small percussion. (When the horse-guy came on stage,
he couldn't see anything because of his mask, so he fell an dropped all
his toys. Nobody dared to laugh since Zorn was in the frontrow,
looking very serious and malicious).
The performance was as dada as the CD, so I still don't know
whether it's a another joke by Zorn or actually she means what
she's doing.
Last thing I heard of her (on the late Tzadik gossip-page) was that
she married last year. (more gossip on this list !!!!)
Another CD to convince your friends you are wasting your money !

A representative single-disc of Conrad is his "Slapping Pythagoras", which
I think is on Table of the Elements.
To my ears, his sound is rather, um, consistent, so if you can handle
RealZudio, the samples at http://www.tonyconrad.com/ should give you a
good idea what he sounds like.

Any of the Crispell/Dresser/Hemingway quartet CD's would be an excellent
place to start, as I consider them the finest stuff Braxton's done, perhaps
some of the finest "jazz" ever. The "Willisau" CD's on Hat Art are
particularly great.
