Hey, Cips, thanks for the note! ;-)

PS. (Now that Cips has me thinking about it) Any Pino Minafra or Carlo
Actis Dato fans out there? I understand Minafra has a new release out
somewhere. His 'Sudori' on Victo has some marvelous work.

I haven't heard of anything new by Pino. I trust you already have his
discs with the Italian Istabile Orchestra (one of which is on ECM of all
places) and his trio session with Reijeser and Bennik on Leo. I'd welcome
others.
As for Carlo just heard a track of his on a community radio jazz show this
morning callewd "Baghdad Blues," but I'm not sure whether
it's new or old. Get his solo CD on Leo if you don't alreadyt have it.
And while I'm offering up recommendations that no one really asked for,
other Italians to be investigated include Mario Schiano, Gianni Gebbia
and his excellent group Terra Arsa.

My copy of the current WIRE has disappeared under mysterious
circumstances (I suspect an overly zealous wife on a cleaning binge) so
I may be misremembering, but I think there was something on a festival
Minafra ran in Sicily where there was mention of a new release, but
check me on it.

Haven't heard the Leo; how is it, what's it like etc?

"Baghdad Blues" is from the fine quartet record of the same name on
Splasc(h), a wonderful date that, as a capsule description, I think of
as an Italian variant on classic Breuker. Similarly with 'Ankara Twist'
on the same label. Have never gotten ahold of 'Urartu', the solo one on
Leo though; been meaning to.

I was off and on about the Schiano record on Victo--is this
representative? Also, please recommend some specific Gebbia releases;
another guy I've been trying to get around to hearing.

Can anyone recommend the solo Rick Bishop album? I'm a Sun City Girls
fan but I'm a little skeptical of this one for some reason...
Speaking of the Sun City Girls... Has anyone noticed how similar "Lies
Up The Niger" from '330,003 Crossdressers From Beyond The Rig Veda' is
to the second track of 'Wild Ducks & Golden Elephants' (Burmese music)
on Shanachie?
What is the most crucial Napalm Death on CD?
Interesting fact for the day: In the Tenbian district of the Tigre
Province of Ethiopia, the people are known for making music by cupping a
hand under their armpit and squeezing the air out, producing the same
farting sound that brings Western children so much joy.

Its all performed on sampler as you may know, and he uses the sounds to
build up virtual orchestras, only the sounds are a little off. Some just
intonation including one simulated piano piece that kind of starts off
normal then derails into just intonation and then back, a lot of horror
movie sounding stuff, and one or two which sort of had beats (it was
decently played at the radio station and I think some people must have
liked those). Don't know what to say as far as recommending it,
because I still get a little queasy with some just intoned stuff, but its
certainly worth hearing. Nice cover and liner notes too.
P.S. I read in an interview that Zorn had wanted to do a Harry Partch/hobo
tribute w/ Tom Waits, but I guess nothing ever came of this (?) This
interview was from the late 80s or early 90s I think.
P.P.S. I'm a little late catching on but I just got Browbeat #2, which is
great. Is there going to be a #3?

I've been looking for someone who might have this cheap, since its been
cut on Celluloid and sometimes places get these (like w/ _Yankees_). I
looked at Wayside and
some other places, but no luck. Just wondering if anyone had seen this,
if not I'll have to shell out full price.
Also if you haven't looked at this you owe it to yourself (I'm not
