Hey Rick, Koch is about to put this back in your local store in the coming
month, so don't go doing something crazy like mailing a gob of money to

i'm not trying to resurrect the past, but i just picked up weird little boy. i
have to say that i rather enjoy it. i feel like i was looking for this type of
disc for a while. kinda noisy, kinda unpolished. i know some people had very
strong feelings about it, and i don't want to really get into this again (so
why am i posting this?) but there is at least one fan of this disc out here...

And then you probably won't get the nice packaging that it has in Japan.
Very good CD, by the way. Sort of develops from where Super Roots 6 left.
It has little in common with the chaotic Boredoms material of before. Long
tracks, trance-like quality. Distinct Krautrock influences. Very good.

saw fantomas (mike patton of mr bungle/faithnomore &c, trevor dunn of mr.
bungle, buzz osborne of the melvins, and dave lombardo from slayer) the
other night. i was really impressed! most of it was reminiscient of
boredoms and short thrashy naked city, patton's voice in particular was
very eye at times, but it never came off as just being a cheap imitation
or anything. it seemed mostly composed with some hand cues by patton. but
they never looked at a single chart or even a set list or anything through
the whole show, nor did patton tell anybody what song was going to be
played next (at least not with words). and they were sooo tight! i thought
it was great. there were a lot of metalheads there, ostensibly to see the
drummer (who did not at all look like what i would expect the drummer from
slayer to look like), and they were really funny. they would really get in
to the loudfast parts, then when there was a weird quiet part they would
boo and shout "pussies!" then there would be another loudfast part and
they'd be happy again. and apparently buzzo can play fast after all (been
holding back all these years!) does anyone know exactly how long they've
been playing? because they seemed to know the set by heart, and were just
_on_. i only remember hearing about them a few months ago. anyway, its
great stuff. i don't know how extensive this tour is gonna be, but i
highly recommend seeing them if they stop by your town.

All the hype the Melvins have had concerning their sludge sound is
hilarious to anyone even remotely into the band. Even a cursory listen to
their early works ("Six Songs", or the uncovered tracks "Scared", "Grinding
Process" and "She Waits" off the Deep Six compilation) show that the
Melvins did *not* set out to slow down the tempo of rock. If anything, they
were the fastest of the northwest scene (with the possible exception of the
Accused).

following is the current schedule, relayed from our good friend Bruce
Gallanter at Downtown Music Gallery. the trio with Feldman and Dresser sounds
especially intriguing.
Jon
<<Oct. 29 - rare solo performance by the enigmatic black-clad noise troubadour
30 - Haino Keiji Trio - with Joey Baron & Mark Dresser. A peculiar recent
fascination with the recordings (ca. 192Os- 4Os) of Argentinian swing guitar
legend Oscar Aleman has led to the unexpected recording of what might be
called
a Haino Keiji 'jazz' album (recorded with the Masada rhythm section of Joey
Baron & Greg Cohen) (coming in January on Avant - "An Unclear Trial: More Than
This"). Expect this to be a one time only event with jazz drum great Baron and
Braxton bassist Mark Dresser. Of course -don't expect this to sound just like
Oscar Aleman any more than Fushitsusha might 'sound' like Haino's heroes Blue
Cheer-- the album's more like Blood Ulmer multiplied to the nth degree.
31 - Haino Keiji with Min Xiao-Fen, Cyro Baptista, Andy Haas, Kramer & Josh
Roseman.>>

I have a few discs of Korean music on JVC which are easy to find/order.
This may be a Japanese branch of the same label???
There is a disc on Nonesuch called 'The Film Music of Toru Takemitsu'
which is really good. Maybe you should start there.

Subject: RE: London Help
=46or those of you heading for London - here are a couple of my favorite
record shops, but do remember that CDs over here cost about =A312 upwards -
they're probably cheaper than in the US, unless you're after some stuff
that you can't find back home. So - whilst in town, check out:
Rough Trade Records - one of the oldest indie record shops. They have 2
branches, one in Neal's Yard in Covent Garden. This one is in the basement
of the Slam City Skates shop & stocks electronica, hip hop, d'n'b, wierd
shit jazz, reggae / dub, post-rock (ecch - I hate that term). Ther are also
quite often gigs or DJ events down here, even though it's a tiny place.
There's a Zorn section. Full of good obscure CDs & vinyl. The other branch
is in Talbot Street, Ladbroke Grove towards the north end of the Portobello
Road. Nice people, good shopping, but not cheap.
Sister Ray records - in Berwick Street, Soho. Full of electronica, hip-hop,
d'n'b & most alternative rock. Usually the cheapest prices for new
releases. No Zorn-type stuff though.
Selectadisc - also in Berwick Street. Same stuff as Sister Ray, but a wider
selection. Good prices here too.
Sounds Of The Universe, Ingestre Place, Soho. Home of left-field dance,
jazz, electronica, hip hop, dub etc etc. Loads of vinyl - a bit trendy but
very good.
There are loads of other record shops in town. Soho has a huge number of
dance / DJ shops specialising in house, hip-hop, latin, & drum & bass - Mr
Bongo & Black Market records are probably the best, but if you're over 21 &
don't have an attitude, prepare to feel very old when you walk in...
The main CD shops are in the centre of town - HMV & Virgin in Oxford
Street, and Tower in Piccadilly Circus. You know what they're like -
mainstream, huge selection, a few good deals, but try the indie shops first
- - they're better.
As for used CD shops, try Reckless Records in Berwick Street - they have
everything, reasonable prices & lots of CD & vinyl. There are also branches
of Record & Tape Exchange in Berwick Street, Camden High Street & Notting
Hill Gate. They have a big selection & you quite often find some
interesting stuff here, but their prices are not fun.
As for live gigs, I don't have any listings with me at the moment, but buy
Time Out when you arrive for a full list. The Wire also has a gig list for
the more avant type of thing. There's loads of music on in London all the
time, you should find something you'll like. Enjoy - there's more to London
than Britpop & Beatle revivalists!

The Group is called "Butter08" (apparently as an hommage to Marlon
Brando's famous scene in Last Tango in Paris).
The album is called "Butter" and is on the Beasty Boys' Grand
Royal label (Mike Mills of the Label is also in Butter).
Great Album, a bit more Punk than the Cibo Matto-output.
Some tracks are on the recent Grand Royal Sampler,
but go for the complete album.

cdnow has it prominently displayed on their worldbeat home page, and on
sale. According to them, it had a release date of Oct 20, and is on
EMD/Virgin, and has an original release date of 1998.

As I recall, there were two live recording sessions for this band held
this spring in Seattle, at the OK Hotel. I was at one of the sessions.
Besides Horvitz and Previte, I think the lineup included Skerik, a mad
sax-player about town and Tucker Martine and his table 'o stuff. Vog is
short for Volcanic Fog, which described the sound of the band pretty
accurately as I recall. How does the tape sound? Is there actually a
CD in the works?
