Hi,
I just picked up Masada #10 and it is of course brilliant. My question is,
does anyone know just how many of these there are going to be?
I have the 'Archery' 2XLP Box for auction if anyone is interested. It is in
good shape and has all of the inserts. It is ltd. to 1000 but 500 were
destroyed in a fire if I understand correctly. Let's make the starting bid
$70. If you are interested in bidding, please e-mail me privately. Thanks for
reading.

In case anyone's interested, I just noticed that CDNow is selling
Masada's 1 through 9 for $12.94. (And you can probably get another $5
off if you play their no-jazz-content trivia game.) The sale end 10/30.
The Masada stuff is at the bottom of this page:

Supposedly its going to be Sonny's Black Woman Lp with Linda, Sirone,
Milford
Graves and Dave Burrell. I wish them better luck than I had in 86,
trying to track down the masters. No one in the front offices had ever
heard of Vortex, or knew that it was an Atlantic affiliated label. I
even had someone who worked at WEA look into it, according to them, the
masters were not listed in the tape archives.

Hope it isn't too late to weigh in on this topic...
I highly recommend all Mikami Kan related disks. I have all of his PSF
releases and all are fabulous. I especially recommend USE (PSFD-30) and
Arashi Ame Arashi (PSFD-97). In terms of vague description, Mikami Kan
is kind of a bluesy, folky, yet utterly foreign singer/acoustic
guitarist. All of his music seems intensely emotional, even though I
have no idea what, specifically, he is singing about since it is all in
japanese. In fact, I prefer that these discs are all in japanese as
that allows me to decide what he is singing about, as opposed to his
vision being totally imposed upon me.
Also, if you can still find them, buy the two volumes of Music in the
First Year of Heisei -- live trio recordings featuring Mikami Kan, Keiji
Haino, and Moto Yoshizawa (PSFD-5/6).
With respect to heavy rock recordings, I highly recommend all of the
High Rise releases on PSF -- heavy, psych, power trio, instrumental,
freak out extra-vaganzas. The Tokyo Flashback volumes are also good
samplers if you like heavy/psych type music. Also, in this vein, Out
(PSFD-11), by White Heaven, is also excellent.
Also, all of the Fushitsusha/Haino/Haino + others releases on PSF are
excellent.
Finally, if anyone knows of any non-PSF recordings by Mikami Kan, please
do tell.

good pharmacist, when you get down to it, is worth more." -- P.K. Dick

I'm fairly sure that most of this trio's material isn't available on CD, w=
ith
the exception of the double disc _Live In Berlin '71_, which is the trio p=
lus
stunning guest Albert Mangelsdorff. While I'm at it, I'd like to highly
recommend Mangelsdorff's 2 CD set on MPS/Verve, _Three Originals_. This
includes the three records, _The Wide Point_, _Trilogue_, and _Live In
Montreaux_. Each of the records is a trio record and has a different bassi=
st
and drummer along with Mangelsdorff. The first has Palle Danielsson and El=
vin
Jones, the second Jaco Pastorius and Alphonse Mouzon, and the third has Je=
an
Francois Jenny-Clark and Ronald Shannon Jackson. The dates are 1975, 1976,=
and

The Brotzmann record is pretty good, but the Mangelsdorff is amazing.

Subject: Music for Children, again
Just wanted to say that I lasted all the way through "Cycles du Nord", the
wind machine/feedback thingie on this CD. Pretty brutal (I'd estimate
wind speeds of maybe 150 mph or so...) but better than I had first
thought. There are some little melody parts at the end played by
the feedback that are actually sort of pretty. But if you thought Leng
T'che or even Torture Garden are punishing, listen to this one.
Still, I bet he's going to catch a lot of hell for putting this out, and
its too bad its on the same disc with the other stuff that I'd listen to
over and over.
Has anyone else heard the Cassiber/Ground Zero CD pn ReR? I'm not sure
about the first disc, but the second disc, the remix, is awesome. Not as
frantic as the other Otomo stuff I've heard. Does anyone know where to
get Ground Zero Plays Standards (I know this has been mentioned but I
tried a few places including DMG w/ no luck).

inclined to think that it's as simple as that.

anyone else see Bob Ostertag tonight? I'm not much of a fan, but he put
together a pretty solid half hour set of improvised sampling, building
climaxes nicely and staying pretty constantly fluid, with only the occasional
moment of wankiness.
quick review of Simon Fell's _Compilation III (Bruce's Fingers):
after two listens, a leading candidate for my top 10 of 1998 list. Parts sound
like Mingus-inspired small combos with a bunch of killer sax soloists (Alan
Wilkinson, John Butcher, Charles Wharf, and Mick Beck), while other parts are
more rock-derived with three electric guitarists (Stefan Jaworzyn, Colin
Medlock, and Damien Bowskill) taking the occasional long solo. parts are
composed, parts are improv. most of it is broken down into smaller group
settings, including Fell's superb OST trio with himself on bass, Mark Wastell
on cello, and Rhodri Davies on harp, among numerous others.) there are more
than forty musicians on the record, but for all of this, it's stunningly
coherent and enjoyable.
today I picked up the brand new Incus release by Fell's trio with Alan
Wilkinson and drummer Paul Hession. on this one, they're joined by Joe Morris.
anyone heard this yet?

Subject: Teiji Ito
Thought I'd post some thoughts on the Teiji Ito King Ubu album since I
haven't seen it mentioned much.
David Toop reviews the disc in the new issue of the Wire, comparing it to
Brian Wilson's Smile outtakes he says it is 'small' music in the best sense.
Small music it is, low key and charming with direct and open melodies-much
like Mr Wilson. Don't let those descriptions fool you, however, this is
clearly complex stuff created by someone with giant musical talents. My
first impression was of a kind of bedroom Harry Partch-all drums and thumb
pianos playing quirkily insistent percussion music.
Of course there's the whole kitchen sink-load of instrumentation, from
guitars alto sax and clarinet to zither, ukelele, organ and a bunch of stuff
you'll never have heard of.
I think Guy Klusevcek sums it up well in his liner notes when he describes
his favourite moments:
"Beer Barrel Polka, with an inspired combination of orkon and a wacked-out
xylophone part that sounds like it could have been written by Frank Zappa;
Where oh where has my little dog gone, in spiraling, dizzy arrangements for
thumb pianos and glass bottles; and a Tea for Two with alto sax and ukelele,
dripping with sleaze... Above all, there is the overwhelming sense of a
brilliant creative spirit... Teiji loved all styles of music, including
classical, ethnic, jazz and pop, and could get deeply enough into each genre
to capture the essence and spirit of the music, yet be able to internalise
it so that it sounds uniquely his own"
I can't add much to that. It's a wonderful disc: witty, gentle, crazy and
deeply cherishable. To the list of influences you might also add Raymond
Scott and Carl Stalling, perhaps Thelonious Monk and also Moondog.
Yet another amazing Tzadik release!
