Subject: Review John Zorn Chamber Ensemble
Hi,
I'm new on this list, and I usually don't come out of my lurking-mode
this quick, but i attended a zorn-gig last night, and i thought "let's
post a review".
"New Jewish Music: John Zorn Ensemble Presents Modern Chamber Music" was
the official title of the evening at Nightown in Rotterdam (Holland).
The full ensemble consisted of: John Zorn (composer/conductor), Marc
Feldman (violin), Joyce Hammann (violin), Lois Martin (altviolin), Erik
Friedlander (cello), Steve Drury (piano), Anthony Coleman (Keyboards),
Willie Winant (percussion), Jim Pugliese (Percussion).
The first piece was Music For Children (Piano, violin and percusion).
The second piece was Cat Of 9 Tales for stringquartet. A very dynamic,
fragmented piece. The guy sitting next to me thought it was a bit to
long, but i didn't agree with him.
Antan dun=E9 (?) was the only piece that Zorn actualy conducted (Violin,
cello, piano/hammond organ, 2 x percusion). The audience laught a lot
because of the funny 'soundeffects' (like one of the percusionists
gurgeling in a bowl of water). It looked as if a lot of things where
improvised, but i can't be too sure about that. The best piece so far.
After a short break they continued with Dark River, a very moody piece
for 4 basdrums. It was very beautifull and it was a shame that there was
so mutch 'background'-noise from the audience.
Carney, a piece for solo-piano was anounced as being written some jears
ago and "revised today". =
The second piece for stingquartet had a jewish name (something like
colnedrai???). Zorn said: if you're jewish you know what that means. And
if you're not jewish i don't give a shit what you think of it, what do
ya think of that!" It was a far more serious piece than Cat Of 9 Tales
and had some klezmer infuences.
They ended with a gamepiece called Rugby (from 1983?). It was
'conducted' by Drury and preformed by everybody exept the three violin
players but including Zorn himself on altosax. The preformance was as
enjoyable to watch as to listen to. (BTW, does anybody know the 'rules'
to this gamepiece?)
Not having heard any of the compositions before, i can't realy say if
the gig was realy very good (objectively speaking), but i enjoyed it a
lot, so it was an excelent gig as far as i'm concerned. Can't wait 'till
he comes back.

Hey,
This may be a bit late because I only get the digest version, but in
regards to Fantomas:
They played their first two gigs in June, in San Francisco. I happened
to be in town so I was able to catch those gigs. Patton wrote all the
music, and the band literally practised for only 5 days prior to the
first show! Some days they would practise 14 hours straight...
The music is very fast, very loud... very precise. Reminded me of
Torture Garden to be honest.... not to say that Patton is residing in
Zorn's shadow, but the music had several similarities.
They are in the midst of a 2 week tour of the west coast (primarily),
and have already recorded their first album which is to be released in
the spring of '99. Also, on the new Tzadik Marc Bolan tribute, Fantomas
has a song titled _Chariot Choogle_ which is rather good.
In Mr. Bungle related news, the new album is set to be recorded this
November and released next spring.
That is all I have to say at this point in time.

This is one of my favorite straight ahead jazz CDs I've heard this year.
Actually I've liked all the Greg Cohen/Joey Baron CDs I've heard on
Avant/Tzadik - well, actually I've just heard Anthony Coleman's Sephardic
Tinge and Misha Mengelberg's Who's Bridge (actually Brad Jones is on bass
on that one), so I guess I could say I like all 1 1/2 of them.
The new Sephardic Tinge has Mike Sarin and Ben Street instead of Cohen and
Baron, at first I was disappointed but they do a fine job. This is
definately the most interesting and skewed, in a subtle way, piano trio CD
I've heard this year. Not as catchy as the last Sephardic Tinge but its
growing on me.
Can anyone recommend the Nathanson/Coleman CD on Tzadik?
As for Avant, I usually look at forced exposure but I don't think they
have all of them listed...

The pieces played were:
1. Music for Children (Feldman, Winant, Drury)
2. Cat O'Nine Tails (Feldman, Friedlander, Hammann, Martin)
3. Etant Donnes (Feldman, Friedlander, Winant, Pugliese, Coleman)

4. Dark River (Pugliese, Winant)
5. Carny (Drury)
6. Kol Nidre (Feldman, Friedlander, Hammann, Martin)
7. Rugby (Drury - prompter, Winant, Coleman, Friedlander, Pugliese, Zorn)
Quite a spectacular mix of pieces. I absolutely loved to see and hear the more
abstract pieces: Music for Children, Etant Donnes, and Rugby. Cat O'Nine Tails
sounds like a chamber version of Naked City to me. Seeing it live was much
better than hearing it on a Kronos album, though. Dark River was awesome - now
I heard what exactly my stereo is quite unable to reproduce. Carny was a feat
of virtuosity, but other than that didn't do it for me. Drury was great in his
execution of it, though. Kol Nidre is one of the best Jewish things Zorn has
done so far. An utterly brilliant minimalist chamber piece, beautiful. The
best piece of the evening, however, was Rugby. Nice to hear Zorn on sax (this
would otherwise have been the second show I've been to that he didn't play).
Winant and Pugliese were awesome throughout. On the game piece cards were
written words like "TRANSPOSITION" and "INTERCUT". It seemed that all the way
through musicians would form groups to counter or add to what was being played.
Groups would vary from solo to including everyone present. Drury was busy but
decisive in his prompting - a real joy for me to actually see a game piece
performed.
I had a little word with Winant afterwards. He told me he was going to record
a Zorn piece with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo. Furthermore, he didn't know
yet whether he was going to be on the new Mr. Bungle album. He said they were
very secretive about the whole thing.

After enjoying Graham Connah's Sour Note Six "My God Has Fleas", I decided
to pick up Sour Note Seven "Gurney To The Lincoln Center Of Your Mind". I
was a bit cautious about the fact that the seventh factor was a vocalist.
But now I've got it, I think the vocals are great. So my request is, can
anyone recommend anything like Graham Connah's stuff, or anything with this
style of singing in it (I hope someone else has this album)...
For those of you who don't know, the Six is Connah on piano, Ben Goldberg
on clarinet, Trevor Dunn on bass, Elliot Kavee on drums, Rob Sudduth on sax
and Marty Wehner on trombone, while the seven adds vocalist Jewlia
Eisenberg. According to some website, most of these musicians are also
playing on a recent or upcoming release by some guy who I don't know (but
some of you might) named Eric Crystal. Anyway...

Subject: Anzelotti/Satie
Steve Smith had inquired about this release a coupla weeks back, so:
This is a recording on Winter & Winter of Teodoro Anzelotti performing
a selection of Erik Satie piano pieces on accordion. I'm not sure how
many Satie fans dwell on this list; I'm very much of one, having cut
my teeth on the recordings by Aldo Ciccolini on Angel and I've, fairly
or otherwise, always held Ciccolini's approach, his tempi, touch, etc.
as the ideal. Occasionally, I'd pick up recordings by other pianists
and, more often than not, become annoyed at clipped tempi or
mechanical, soulless readings of tunes I felt should have been taken
leisurely or played with a wistful or melancholy air.
Well, Anzelotti acquits himself admirably. He plays with grace and
sensitivity, bending the pieces to his ends with subtlety e.g.,
slowing down some of the Gnossienes to an almost Feldman-like stasis.
Happily, the selections, aside from the six Gnossienes and the
ubiquitous 1st Gymnopedie, are drawn from less well known corners of
Satie's output. True, there are only a handful of pieces where
Anzelotti brings some "accordion-ness" to the proceedings, getting
effects unobtainable from a piano; otherwise he simply plays the work
as written, but does so quite beautifully. Highly recommended.
Also picked up 'Smash! Clap!', the new Tzadik release by Naftule's
Dream. At it's best a fun mix of klez and free jazz, at worst some
clunky, thudding rockish songs. Not bad, they sound like they'd be
enjoyable to hear live. The clarinetist (I forget his name) stands out
as a fine player.

Actually it reminded me of some of that good old prog rock. National
Health and Hatfield and the North both had that habit of doubling the
voice with another lead instrument, as well as using the voice as
just another lead instrument in the ensemble, rather than as the focus
of our attention.
I was a bit cautious too, for the same reason. I've only listened
once or twice, but I thought my caution was unwarranted.
Then again, I could have guessed that ahead of time. Connah's got
great taste and all of his cds are winners. He's definitely
deserving of much wider attention. (That is, all of you go out and
buy his discs!)

He's got an earlier album "Snaps erupt at pure spans," with Kenny
Wolleson instead of Kavee, and without Wehner.
Connah's work is clearly jazz. His compositions are dense, ensemble
oriented pieces, with a lot going on at once. They're more like the
compositions of Henry Threadgill (although perhaps not as dark) or
Tom Varner than more traditional jazz - no head, solo, solo, head
here. Lots of different motifs, lots of interplay, lots of complexity.
But all with a sense of humor.
The last two are on Rastacan. The first one is on his own label,
Sour Note 7, you can get it from Cadence for a mere $10.
