i picked this up from tim berne when he came through dc. i was always a
big fan of ducret's playing on berne's records and this solo album
does not disappoint. it starts out with some real angular,
expressionistic distorted playing which wouldn't sound out of place in
storm & stress. and then the rest of the album ducret largely plays it
clean, spanning from abstract to nods to more conventional jazz guitar.
i think i mentioned before that the robots-spanking-ass motif from the
packaging is beyond brilliant.
needless to say, i'm a fan.

Makes sense, although the catalog number of A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED is
different (KFR-216).

They may have pushed up the release to coincide with the KF Lincoln Center
Seder, since a lot of the material from the album was performed at that
event.

Caught the sextet incarnation of JZ's band Friday night at Tonic
(Feldman, Friedlander, Cohen, Robot, Baron and Baptista). A very
impressive, beautiful show. All of the pieces (I'm pretty sure) were
from the 'Circle Maker' disc, occasionally slowed down or sped up a
bit, but Zorn allowed more expansive improv on several of them. A few
things stood out: 1) Zorn's conducting, from a chair facing the band,
was enjoyable and intriguing to watch. A nice balancing act between
allowing his musicians to take off on odd tangents and reining them in
when he needed the composition to assert itself. 2) The joyful and
humorous interplay between several of the performers:
Feldman/Friedlander and Baron/Baptista especially. A pleasure to watch
artists who are having such an obviously good time and, by inference,
music that allows them this latitude and provides great fodder. 3)
Most of all, the intense and unabasedly emotional soloing by all
members, in particular Feldman and Ribot (the latter still possessing
the most gorgeous guitar tone on the planet). One of my favorite
attributes of this band (and Masada) is the near complete
defenestration (look it up) of any remnants of post-modernism, in
favor of deep thought, feeling and, simply, beautiful music. I can do
without ironic allusions and knowing smirks for a while.
A word to the wise: Tonic has begun a policy of selling advance
tickets for certain performances; these shows, for example. This
policy will be in effect for the Haino Keiji shows at the end of the
month. I was told they'd begin selling tickets for these events at the
end of this week.

Does anybody know the story behind the Roir reissue of this symphony?
I mean, Atavistic reissued it in 1992 (when the label was called Atavistic
video). Was it out of print? Could they have lost the rights to keep it in
print? Just curious.
Thanks,
Patrice (who forgot when Roir -- the cassette only label -- realized
that CDs were not evil).

the deal with roir was that they worked with artists on who were in the
midst of label commitments. those bands were able to release stuff with
roir as long as it was cassette-only and subsequently roir did really
well in the days before record companies realized the potential
popularity of cassettes.
the bad brains best record was released on roir.

Subject: Zorn Interview
I've got a book from my college library with a John Zorn interview. The
book is called Talking Music by Duckworth. Here's an excerpt:
DUCKWORTH:
Why did you decide to play saxophone instead of some other
instrument?
ZORN:
I wonder if I picked the Braxton record up first and then the sax,
or whether it was the other way around. I can't really remember the
chronology. But I do remember that the 1st jazz records I listened to
were the Jazz Composers' Orchestra, the two record set with Cecil Taylor
and Pharoah Sanders, Ascension, and Free Jazz. Those were the records
that a friend of mine, lke an elder, turned me on to in college and said
"check this out." And I was impressed with, say, Cecil Taylor's Unit
Structures. It had a real structure to it; it wasn't just a blowing
session. I enjoyed the blowing session quality of Ascension, but at the
same time, I realy got into Taylor's work with structure.
DUCKWORTH
Were you a natural saxophone playe? Did it come easily?
ZORN
Yes, I picked the thing up and it was there from the 1st minute I
started playing. Maybe that's why I stuck with it. I remember my
composition teacher saying, "You know, you're never going to be a great
saxophone player, you're starting so late." And I said, "Well, I don't
care if I practice ten hours a day for the rest of my life. I love
doing it and I'm going to do it. I don't care what you think." He was
trying to tell me, "Don't bother with the saxophone, study the piano."
And when I was a teenager and got into the organ, I wanted to study
organ but my parents said, "No, no. You can't play the organ; play the
piano."
DUCKWORTH
Let's talk about how SPILLANE was written.
ZORN
Okay. First I'd just write images and ideas: "I heard the scream
through the mist of the night." I took the first phrase from my
favorite books by him, because he's got great first lines. Or images:
"Girl #1: Velda," you know, a portrait of who Velda is. Or Kiss Me
Deadly; I have synopses of the six major books. "Knife fight": I just
picked different things that I thought related to Spillane. And then I
kind of orchestrated like this: "Harlem nightclub; blues guitar and
backup; Arto vocal; question mark; marration; shoot out." That's all it
would say. Later, I'd pick the musicians involved. So it would start
out with images, then I'd begin to get a little more specific in terms
of orchestration, then I'd order the thing.
DUCKWORTH
Did it turn to a point into notes on a page?
ZORN
Not always. I write everyday. I just write things down that I
like. Then I may go through my notes, just independent events, and try
to find something that sounds like it fits with something else. So I'd
go into the studio equipped with these file cards that have been
numbered, and we'd start recording the piece from the beginning. We
started with the scream. I have everybody there all the time, so ti's
kind of like an artist's palette. All eight musicians were there ten
hours a day, every day, in the studio. It took about seven or eight
days.
(Zorn mentions at one point that he didn't begin playing saxophone till
age 20!!!)
The interview goes on and on. the ISBN # for the book is 0-02-870823-7

To grasp Elliott's music, you have to try either a Carbon record or one with
his string compositions.
My favorite Carbon are DATACIDE and TOCSIN (both on Enemy). Because they
might not be easy to find, you can try INTERFERENCE (on Atavistic) which is
also very good.
For his string music, I love CRYPTID FRAGMENTS (on Extreme), and XENOCODEX
(on Tzadik).
Talking about E# and guitar, he has an upcoming record (called GTR OBLQ)
with... Vernon Reid and David Torn!!! Don't know the label (Intuition?).
Looks like an interesting combination.
Patrice.

Both these discs are great. The Bribe is especially good, it reminds me why
I got into Zorn in the first place. If you already like Spillane, The Bribe
is basically a jumbo version of same. The main difference is that the themes
are allowed to develop fully where they just flash past on Spillane. The
music is as varied as you could wish with some outstanding moments, my
favourite being track 4 'Meters' (possibly after the funk band?) which is a
smokin' funk workout with some scorching Bob Quine guiter. There are also
some extended Christian Marclay workouts. The whole thing is just a joy.
Aporias is a different beast. I've only listened to it a couple of
times so these thoughts are relatively unfocused. Quite low key and with
hints and references to a multitude of styles. It's a modern classical
chamber piece. I can hear bits of Ellington in the Piano playing and
European composers such as Stravinsky and Bartok in the strings but it
really is much more than that.
If you're going for in-yer-face cut'n'thrust Zorn then get The
Bribe, if you fancy something more sombre and less flashy then get Aporias.
Or you can do what I imagine most people on this list will do and get 'em
both.
Happy purchasing
Scott Russell
