Thanks for your recommendation. I┤ve already known Melford┤s group (one of
my fav pianists).I think Speed leads another group called Human Feels (or
something like that) but I don┤t know if it┤s actually ruling.

Berne and Formanek duo recent release "Ornery People" (Little Brother

Subject: painkiller cover
Last week someone posted a message about how the cover of "Execution Ground"
was taken from Lucio Fulci's "The Gates of Hell." Begging your pardon, but
unless the cover was taken from an outtake still, the scene (man hanging
from a tree with people underneath, everything shrouded in fog) does not
appear in the film at all.
Anyone know where it comes from, then? Or where the "for heavens sake catch
me" photo from "Buried Secrets" comes from?

As far as I know, we can only dream. But there aren't that many degrees of
separation, though. There's a Greg Cohen that plays bass on the last 4 or 5
Waits albums (except "Bone Machine") -- the same Greg Cohen from Masada?
Marc Ribot also plays on "Franks Wild Years."
Maybe someday if "Fishing with John" was hosted by Zorn instead... <chuckle>
Waits could cut bait, and Zorn could practice his duck calls in a more
appropriate setting...

I'd really like to know about online sources (preferably in English) for
info on Iancu Dumitrescu and Iannis Xenakis. My searches have led
nowhere, really: very little on Xenakis and nothing on Dumitrescu apart
from the refreshing breathlessness on the Web of Mimicry. Could anyone
help me out?
BTW, I appreciate you guys getting me into this stuff (i.e.
electroacoustic music). I got LA LEGENDE D'EER, KRAANERG, Dumitrescu's
OURANOS (a split CD w/ Amran [sp?]), and some other stuff. I always
apreciate suggestions!

You should get "Medium III", which is on the Edition Modern MN.1001 CD.
In my opinion, this is Dumitrescu's best piece. It's for solo bass, and
you'll be blown away by the sheer intensity of the sounds that Fernanod
Grillo is able to retrieve from his bass. There's another rendition of this
called "Medium II" which is on the original Edition RZ album. I haven't
heard this, but I was told it's even better than the CD version.
Doesn't Forced Exposure have at least some basic information about
Dumitrescu?
The latest edition of Bananafish magazine has a piece about him, although
I found it very difficult to grasp. Probably that's because I'm just
a stupid guy from Holland.

That's a famous photograph from the Heirens case, late 50s if I am not
mistaken. Heirens, whose first name escapes me, was a young serial killer
(only 18 years of age), who killed two women before getting caught. He
wrote that text on the wall, knowing full well that his urges would be
greater than the will to leave his life of killing behind him.

Yes, and it's a bit helpful, though it offers nothing in the way of
interview material, biography, criticism, context, or otherwise useful
substance. But of course FE's a great online shop and that would be
asking a bit much. And they don't carry Edition Modern 1001, though I'm
going to try to do something about that...

Nonsense. Thanks for the pointer.

Subject: Rivers/Hendrix? + Branca 2000
Recently, on another list, I saw mention of a new music 'zine
operating out of Chapel Hill, NC called, 'Tuba Frenzy', which I'd
never previously heard of, much less seen. Strangely enough, the next
day I ducked into a magazine store and there was issue #4 (Spring,
1998), nestled comfortably among the standard fare. It's a pretty
decent publication, perhaps a little heavy on the sub-alternative rock
scene for my tastes, but features lengthy, in-depth articles and
aggressive, occasionally antagonistic, criticism.
A couple of items caught my eye:
1) From a long interview with Sam Rivers, this exchange:
TF: And that [the Wildflowers series] was released at the time?
SR: Yes. Alan Douglas also co-produced it...he also has some tapes
of some stuff I did with Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix. He still has those.
TF: I'd love to hear that; where did you record those? In New York?
SR: Yeah, it was a jam session...
Um...yow!
2) There's also a lengthy article detailing everything you could ever
possibly want to know about the history of the 99 label (Branca, Bush
Tetras, Liquid Liquid, etc.). In a sidebar, mention is made of a
Branca project called 'Hallucination City', written for 2000 guitars,
to be performed in Paris in 2000. It also mentions his Symphony #11,
for traditional orchestra, performed in June in Holland. Anyone catch
that?

Well, Pachora have actually only made one recording (on which Chris lays
down his sax and tears things up on the clarinet) and it's actually on
Knitting Factory Works. The rest of the band is Brad Shepik (assorted
Eastern European guitar-type instruments), Skuli Sverisson (elec bass),
and Jim Black (drums). This record is totally wonderful, I would
definietly recommend checking it out. The music on here is traditional
tunes from the nebulous Balkan repitoire as well as originals inspired
by the same. This was the very last band I saw at the NYC Jazzfest this
year and they just blew me away. Total energy.
Speaking of Chris and Songlines, I would direct you to two of my favorite
Songlines releases on which Chris does appear. The 1st is 'Yeah,No' with
his quartet (Cuong Vu - trumpet, Skuli, and Jim). Lots of energy,
everyone shines on here in their own way. Both Cuong and Chris really
impress on here, I think this is some of the best playing I've heard from
them. The other is the most recent Human Feel record, 'Speak To It'.
This band got started when all of the members (Chris, Jim, Andrew
D'Angelo - reeds, Kurt Rosenwinkle - guitar) were in school in Boston way
back when. 'Speak To It' is very important to me...it ranks way up there
among albums that have just really opened my ears and totally changed how
I hear music. These guys smash themes and improv together in ways that
are just way too crazy to get into. Let it suffice to say that they are
_heavy_.
I hung with Chris a little when I was in NYC last month, he mentioned to
me that both Pachora and his Quartet were going to be going into the
studio this summer. This should be cool as both of these bands have taken
major leaps since they last did any recording.

I had asked for some Tom Waits requests a while back. I picked up Rain
Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Closing Time, Foreign Affairs, Nighthawks at the
Diner. My question is....
What is his newer stuff like? Does it hold up to the material I have been
chruning around in my disc player?
Is there anyone else like Tom Waits? I know this is a dumb thing to ask,
but are there any other players that come from that old school jazz bad ass
beat hipster singer / poet direction?
Thanks!

Subject: Nik Bullen
>I'm looking for as much information on Nicholas James (Nik) Bullen as
possible.
>Can anybody help?
Based upon stuff I've read and heard from others...NJ Bullen (bass/vocals)
along with Justin Broadrick(guitar) founded Napalm Death around 81/82 playing
in a Crass/Amebix British hardcore style. Initial recording include
appearances on the Crass related "Bullshit Detector 3" compilation in 82 and
according to the godflesh website (www.albany.edu/~te0011/godflesh.html) a
comp called "Ya Mothas So Fat She Fits Under A Car" with a song called "We
Got the Beatles but not the Band" in 1983. The "Hatred Surge" demo was
released in 85 and the band by that time included Mick Harris on Drums. Jim
Whitley was added on bass to allow Nik to concentrate on vocals and go
"apeshit on stage". This lineup recorded in August 86 what became side 1 of
the Napalm Death release "Scum" and were now playing in grindcore style. This
probably occured earlier though, possibly when Harris joined.
After this recording (not released until 87 after side 2 was completed with
new guitarist and singer) Nik appears to have disappeared musically until
hooking up with Mick Harris (again) in 91 to create Scorn. Justin Broadrick
played on the first album "Vae Solis" but was a guest, not a member. The
Harris/Bullen version of Scorn lasted through 4 albums (1 is a remix) 3 ep's,
1 12" & 1 7" until 95 when Bullen was involved in a "violent nightclub
incident". According to posts on the dubterrorist chat page Nik allegedly
felt like inflicting violence that night and stabbed a stranger with a broken
bottle. Some jail time was the result and since his release (not sure when)
I'm not aware of any activity.
The only other musical activity I'm aware of is some bass playing on the Germ
cd "Parrot", 2 excellent tracks on the SubRosa split with Laswell release
called "Bass Terror", a solo track under the name Umbilical Limbo on the
compilation "Stereo Test Record" and an appearnce on Justin Broadricks first
Final cd which included some recordings with Bullen between 83 - 87 that were
processed into ambient recordings. Hope this helps. Jeff

Subject: HELP!!!!!
Hey all you Zorn-list folk,
Can any of you help me out?? My name is Michelle and I recently had 18
CD's stolen (GRRRRRR!!!) from a huge music collection. I am very, very
upset about this, as music is very important to me. Since I am Canadian
(prices here are very unreasonable), it will be well over $400 to
replace all of these discs. The thought of doing that makes me ill.
Some were gifts from musicians and some are even irreplaceable.
If there is any chance of someone out there who knows where I could get
the discs used or for a _very good deal_, let me know... I would be
*forever grateful*. The most important ones I need to replace are:
JOHN ZORN
- -Elegy (i don't care wether it's on eva or tzadik, obvioulsy)
- -Duras-Duchamp
- -Angelus Novus
- -Filmworks 4 (Cynical Hysterie...)
- -Naked City RADIO
- -The Classic Guides To Strategy
ROVA
- -The Bay
- -Pipe Dreams
ARTO LINDSAY
- -Aggregates 1-26
- -The Subtle Body
CHRISTIAN MARCLAY
- -Records 1981-1989
MARC RIBOT
- -A Requiem For What's His Name
If anyone could offer some help, that would be super. Sorry to post
this whiny plea but I really miss my CD's and I need to get them back.
I've looked in used record stores and pawn shops with no luck. It's
last resort time.

From Xenakis, I highly recommend the Arditti Quartet's recordings of his
complete chamber works for piano and strings (forgot the name of the
pianist... sorry...) It's on the same label as Legende d'Er- the disc is
simply titled "Iannis Xenakis 1"
If IX is floating your boat, you'd probably groove to Gyorgy Ligeti as well.
They come from different schools, but there's a certain emotional quality
I've often found similar between the two composers. The Gyorgy Ligeti
Edition on Sony is the place to go- It's up to volume 7 now (or maybe 8,
even)- chronicling his entire output, under his supervision. In particular I
like the vocal works alot- but that's just my opinion. He didn't really
experiment much with electronics like IX, but you may dig
Another composer I came across recently of interest is Luigi Nono. There's a
piece called "Hommage a Gyorgy Kurtag" that really grabbed me, and his
"Promoteo" (if you can find the complete 2CD version- I think it's out of
print) is well worth seeking out.
Similar in feel to X's "Legende d'Er" is Jim O'Rourke's "Terminal Pharmacy"
on Tzadik, as well. Worth checking out, too.
