Sorry to clog any mailboxes out there, but I was wondering if any Zorn
shirts are still floating around out there, specifically Naked City or
Painkiller (yes, I know, I'm sure I'll outgrow my noise rock penchant one
day). If not, does anybody have a large or X-large they could sell?
OK, as per the next request, I've decided on nutting up and putting on an
avant/noise festival. Even though I'm pretty frickin' broke, I can probably
get one of these "hep artistic" cats to put up a little money a la Warhol
to offer John, but as per contacting him what would my best bet be? Writing
Tzadik? Flying out to one of his gigs (THAT can happen, and monkeys might
fly outtta my butt)? Hiring a sky-writer? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ev.

I've always wondered who this Shin Terai is, because he appeared in many
"thank you" sections. But why is he featured this prominently on Chaos Face?
He's only credited for some vocals on two tracks. Or is he Chaos Face?
Kind regards,

Not having heard Dowd, but it would seem that he's interested in "real"
country, i.e. before the Nashville sweeteners took over. To hear that get
Merle Haggard's "Okie From Muskogee" or "A Working Man Can't Get Anywhere
Today" (both Capitol);" Johnny Cash at Folson Prison" (Columbia) or
"Greatest Hits" (Sun). There are also good discs by Web Pierce, Buck
Owens, Hank Snow, Hank Thompson Ernest Tubb et. al.
Tubb's "Waltz Across Texas" has been "covered" by Eugene Chadbourne on a
couple of CDs and in live performance, which, of course, gets us back to
John Zorn and creative improvised music.
As much as I respect Merle Haggard, in particular, I still think an
immersion in Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor is more germane for the
"search for truth and beauty" than even the finest C&W session.

Hi,
I'm not so sure about the 4/4 hardcore but apart from lots of stuff with
Zorn he's a regular with Bill Frisell. Frisell/Driscoll/Baron "Live " is
very nice.
All Music Guide lists heaps of things he's appeared on from Zorn to straight
jazz and everything in-between.
Cheers
Chris.

I think Bill was in Japan right around the time Chaos Face was made (I
can't remember exactly, this was when I first got involved) but I don't
think the idea was that Shin was Chaos Face, it was just a name.

Might I be the only one in the greater Boston area to not come across the
new Winter & Winter Dave Douglas release? For the luck ones that have
been listening to it, what might one expect? The one W&W release I
have, Motain w/ Lovano & Frisell, is very good (any fan of either 3 of
these fine dudes should pick it up...)
Anyone else out there playing hell out of the new slew of Lurie/Lounge
Lizard releases - they are all kicking! Does anyone have the scoop on
when the soundtrack "African Swimming/Manny & Low" will be ready
for listening.
So many questions I know. Thanks ahead of time gang. And happy
listening...

You can count me in! The record is not very different from VOICE OF CHUNK.
This is not a criticism: I think that VOICE OF CHUNK is a killer record.
It does not hurt to see John Lurie pursuing this vein.

The best place to look would be http://www.allmusic.com/ and search for
Joey Baron (his page is http://www.allmusic.com/cg/x.exe?p=amg&sql=B36829).
This page will list all (4) of his own albums plus every album he's played
on (That AMG knows about). I find this to be a great resource for finding
out more about musicians.

Subject: Arcana/Arc of the Testimony
Apologies if this was discussed before. Feel free to reply to personal
email if this is the case.
I've just been listening to Arcana's Arc of the Testimony, billed as
Tony Williams' last session. In the liner notes, Laswell says Williams'
died before the project was completed (despite a full CD of music). I'm
trying to figure out what this means and what the recording process
was. There are a couple of layers of music happening on each track, and
they don't interlock very obviously so I'm wondering if Williams and
Laswell taped some tracks together, then Laswell brought in the others
who played while listening to the tape. Also, the sound of Williams'
drums is a bit muddy to my ears, not what you would expect from a
Laswell project. Maybe these tapes weren't originally planned for
release?
Anybody know how the final product came about? Mostly over dubbing
after Tony died? I'm also interested in opinions on how well the album
works. To my ears, Pharoah and Buckethead have their moments, but
overall its pretty static.
Thanks.

There was a track with Ornette that never happened. Also, Williams never
heard the final mixes.

Exactly what happened. Bass and drums were recorded first.

This project was in the works for quite a while. I don't find the drums
muddy. There is some very deep bass on the CD that could cause some
speakers to sound more muddy though.

If I remember correctly, all the recording took place before Tony died.
By the way, it was originally going to be an ambient recording, but I guess
Tony and Bill got carried away.

And thanks again for answering so many questions. (Altho' as I continue

Which shows did you see? I found their late night sets at Studio 16
fascinating, the Sunday afternoon one a bit less so. To me there was lots
of that dark underside even if they weren't turning bop lines inside out
this time but rather country blues and Doc Boggs tunes (although slowed
down and atonalized to the point where you'd hardly recognize them). Also I
think this is a band you get into partly because the sound/timbral/textural
combinations are beautiful and almost mesmerizing in themselves - but
that's not as apparent half-way back as from the front row, or through a
bad sound system...and let's face it, just about any sound system takes the
life out of this kind of music. I didn't think Schott or Goldberg were
bored (and of course I wasn't), athough Schott did tell me he was unhappy
with the amp he was using, that he couldn't get the sustain he wanted.
Maybe the sound is also part of the reason I don't like the Junk Genius
record very much.
As far as something misssing in Ben's music in general, do people feel the
same about his contributions to Light at the Crossroads? IMHO he's right up
there with Marty.

I don't expect to see John Zorn playing live in my country, and not
because I don't want it, but is there live video versions of anyone

And, last but not least, if anyone knows the existence of some work
