In the film you can see a rehearsal of a band lead by Zorn.
The sound is very ambient, it looks like a game-piece
and Zorn is taking notes while conducting.
The band is Marc Ribot, Jim Pugliese, Erik Friedlander
and some others I don't remember (possibly Anthony Coleman
and David Shea).
I think the piece was called something like "The Sand's Share"
(since this was listed in the end-titles).
Does someone know the exact name,
has this been performed or recorded yet ?

YVes

From the list, back about two or three months, there was a long
electroacoustic music thread. Iancu Dumitrescu was mentioned and
discussed. Does anyone know if there is Dumitrescu resources/info on
the web, or anywhere else? Preferably in English or French. Also, if
anyone wants to trade/sell their Dumitrescu, I'm interested.
Suggestions are also appreciated.
thanks in advance,

I'm moving from the once-fertile, now-barren music scene of Memphis/North
Mississippi to Redding, California in about a month. After I take a few
months to get settled in and establish where my income level will be, I'll
be all hopped up to check out the musical offerings in San Francisco.
I won't be able to just hop in the car for just every interesting musical
event; Redding is about four hours away from SF. But what are the
highlights, as far as venues, festivals, events planned well into the
future? Am I about to stumble onto Shangri-La?
How about record stores? I should probably cut up all my plastic before I
move, huh?

Hey, Zornlist--
Frank's APA is an Amateur Publishing Association for people who like to
read and write about music; who aren't quite willing yet to give up the
feel of paper; and who have ever gotten even the smallest kick out of
putting out their own fanzines.
The membership of Frank's APA (a clever name that beat out Frank's Inatra
by a hair) is mainly comprised of folks from Ireland and the UK, though
there are a few token Americans, like me. The APA is always on the lookout
for new members, and I thought it worthwhile to waste a few lines of
bandwidth to mention the apa to the Zornlist. I think that many of you
would like the APA, and I think that the APA would like many of you.
Thanks for your forbearance. If you're interested in any further details,
like how the APA format works, please e-mail me PRIVATELY. Mike R., sorry
for the plugtastic intrusion. This is the only time I'll try to sell the
APA on the list.

From this week's Billboard, International Newsline section, reported by
Robbert Tilli, all rights reserved, etc., etc.
LEGENDARY JAZZ LABEL ESP is to be resurrected by Dutch indie VIA Records
after 15 years in hibernation. VIA has acquired the right to use the
trademark of the Woodstock, NY-based label and the old ESP "hippie" logo
for 12 years, with the option to buy the company, owned by Bernard and
Flavia Stollman, after the first six years. All ESP titles, such as
albums by Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell, will be made
available again through VIA. "We were looking for ways to get inroads
for our own catalog into the international market, including the U.S.,"
explains VIA GM Ben Gieskes. VIA, which recently acquired the rights to
distribute BMG's jazz catalog in the Benelux, will transfer saxophonist
Yuri Honig and Dutch pianist Michiel Borstlap from its own roster to
ESP.

It's actually a two disc set, consisting of the "Decoder" and
"Security", each with an added piece. Hopefully they will do something
new in the near future, though.

There will be a remix CD of some of the music from the earlier discs, also

4+1 ensemble
INT 3224-2
Composer, pianist, and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has many sides. Over the past
ten years, he has been leading various ensembles including the New York
Composers Orchestra and was a member of John Zorn's Naked City. As a sideman,
he has worked with such diverse artists as Marty Ehrich, Bill Frisell, Bobby
Privite, and blues guitarist Bobby Radcliff, among others. He appears on over
fifty recordings. His commissions include compositions for The Kronos Quartet,
as well as for theatre, dance, video, TV, and other multimedia projects.
Horvitz performed extensively throughout North America, Japan, and Europe,
where he enjoys a solid reputation.
Intuition Records releases now Horvitz latest project with his 4+1 Ensemble, a
surprising yet logical extension of his musical story thus far. The
ingredients: Horvitz, playing mostly acoustic piano, trombonist Julian
Priester, violinist Eyvind Kang (member of the quartet led by Bill Frisell),
keyboardist Reggie Watts, and the phantom-like presence of Martine Tucker, who
offers understated electronic processing of the band in action. From these
elements comes a new kind of ensemble, sans drums or bass but not rhythmic
impetus, alluding to jazz and classical traditions, free improvisation and
other genres, identifiable and otherwise.
Call it jazz if necessary. This music has no name, in particular: it has a
strong spirit, and a sense of moving forward and inward at the same time.

Teodoro Anzellotti Erik Satie Winter & Winter

Additionally, the ad for Picadilly Records towards the back of the mag

I've been gnashing teeth over for many years. It doesn't mention a

That is precisely the label analogy I used in discussion on another mailing
list I'm on, only I namechecked Greg Abate, an alto player who never even
developed the level of recognition as Shank.

About Honig, nothing, but someone on that other list I mentioned reminded me
that Borstlap was the winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition in 1996, when
the contest was held among jazz composers (it's given to a different type of
musical artist each year, for those who don't know), and one of his tunes was
covered on the Hancock/Shorter CD last year. Regarding the second half of
your question... jury's out but it's not looking good...

well, here's the second-hand scoop on this set from Dean Blackwood at
Revenant.
CD 1- the original version of Trout Mask Replica. I guess the deal here is
Beefheart and Zappa got into some dispute and CB ended up rerecording the
record.
CD 2- the original Bat Chain Puller.
CD 3- songs from the early Safe As Milk/Lick My Decals Off period.
CD 4- a live show from I'm not sure when.
I think that a lot of this stuff has been bootlegged before but I'm certainly
about as psyched as I can be for a new release.
