  47. The package isn't innovative at all, but a thing of beauty.

  87. As long as we're on the topic of packaging, one of my favorites is Man Or
  88. Astroman?'s ep 1000X  from about a year and a half ago.  The little foldout
  89. booklet is made of some wierd synthetic semi-transparent material on which
  90. all the images bleed through to create one layered image.  In keeping with
  91. Man Or Astroman?'s spirit, the images are very kitchy fifties scientific
  92. textbook-like.

  94. The music's pretty cool too (what a bonus), sort of surf/indie rock
  95. instrumentals with all sorts of homemade theremins, 50's-ish sound effect
  96. generators and random samples.

  119. Dorgon is a new name to me (not a professional wrestler, right?), but as far as 
  120. most unusual CD packaging, I'd go with the Willem Breuker Kollektief's 'Heibel' 
  121. with the disc enclosed in a CD-sized cheese box made of thin laths of wood 
  122. stapled together. David Shea's 'Mort aux Vaches' from earlier this year featured
  123. a two-pronged metal pin inserted through the sleeve to impale the disc; neat 
  124. idea, except, inevitably, the pin broke...

  151. I think that the best cd that I have heard come out of Tzadik is 
  152. "Patterns of Plants" by Mamoru Fujieda.  Fujieda has constructed a 
  153. device that records the naturally-occuring electrical impulses that
  154. travel across the surface of plant leaves.  He then arranged the
  155. patterns of these electric impulses for small string ensembles.  Not
  156. only is the concept pleasing, the musical manifestation of the
  157. concept is a complete success.  The music is mellow and 100%
  158. planty.  Don't think of a group like aube who produces recordings
  159. using nothing but the sound of water, or heartbeats, or metal.
  160. Aube is intentionally dissonant.  Fujieda's arrangements have a distinct
  161. and curious melody, somehow resonant with the idea that the compositions
  162. originated in the plant world.  I listen to "Pattern of Plants" far more 
  163. frequently than any other Tzadik cd.  (By the way, Fujieda's other disc 
  164. on Tzadik, "The Night Chant", doesn't do a damn thing for me.)

  250. I think Bailey's acoustic playing is most accessible solo.  80's
  251. recordings tend to be more accessible than 70's recordings.  I'd start
  252. with _Aida_ or _Drop Me Off at 96th_.  The electric playing you've already
  253. heard.  Arcana's _The Last Wave_ and the Bailey/Tony Oxley duet _Soho
  254. Suites_ are both fine (relatively) recent recordings.  Bailey hasn't made
  255. many bad records.  Avoid _Moments Precieux_ (with Braxton) at all costs.

  294. on Matchless, whose title escapes me for the moment.  Haven't heard it but
  295. can't recommend his playing enough.

  338. Has anyone suggested the Gerry Hemingway Collected Works CDs?  He has two
  339. out there, I've sent them out on loan, so I can give the vital details.
  340. However I can tell you that it's entirely a studio product with all sorts
  341. of layering, effects, and vaguely recognizible precussion.  Apperently
  342. they're a composite of tunes that span over 10 years of some fun fooling.
  343. Anyhow, good stuff, not AT ALL what I expected, hence good stuff.

  532. For anyone of you who likes "post" henry cow groups (like x-legged sally,
  533. cro-magnon,pigpen,debris etc.) i strongly recommend chicago`s Broken wire from eight day music label.Really interesting mixture of rock
  534. ,jazz, contemporary ,etc.Not tzadik but worth to try.There is also a very interesting solo cello work by Fredrick lonberg-Holm(also playing
  535. in Broken wire) same label.

  559. Talkng about percussion...
  560. In my opinion some of the most exciting  rhytmically albums are not for drums solo. 
  561. The most prominent example would be Miles davis "filles de kilimanjaro". Tony Williams plays incredible stuff there, but it's the whole band that makes it a rythmical masterpiece (although i would love to buy the rythm section tracks from these album, without horns... well i love shorter and davis, but...).
  562. Btw were there any jz or related cover versions of the stuff (petit machins:-)from "kilimanjaro"? It's an absolutly incredible album.
  563. Another great miles davis rythm album is "dark magus". From the same period as agharta or panagea but MUCH BETTER. Intersting for those who are looking for percussive music ( there are 3 guitars, a bass,  2 saxes, a trumpet, a drummer and a percussionist)
  564. Yet another exxelent example of gruop rhytmical playing can be found on '80s crimson records, especially discipline. How a whole band can become a schizoid rythm section...
  565. Also fripp&league of crafty guitarists would be interesting. It's extremly rythmical music, despite there is no drums- acoustic guitars only.
