Hello,
Might anyone want _Mom's_ on cd? I'm looking to trade it. Interested in
getting _Fear No Love_ by Bob Ostertag in return. (Or open to other offers
if not.) Also have Naked City _Absinthe_ for trade.
Thanks.
JJTar
BTW--The God cds I have are all on Pathological, Virgin, or Big Cat...NOT
Earache. Good heavy grindcore, very dense. Zorn appears on _Possession_.
If anybody has "Consumed" for trade/sale, I'd be extremely interested in
acquiring it! I still lack that disc. Thanks.

well, I was one of those 20. I was up in the front row on the left with my

I actually felt that the compositions cohered more while the improv was a bit

since the improv was last and the air conditioning had been turned off before
the show started, since it interfered with their sparse, quiet pieces.

well, I'm pretty sure the only polwechsel release available is on random
acoustics. it's the three austrians with the addition of malfatti, and while I
haven't heard it yet, I'll be picking it up soon.
I know coleman is on the recent guillermo gregorio record on hatology and on
the recent set of anthony braxton compostions on hat(now). I don't know of any

On Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack to "Wild Palms" (a wonderful disc, by the way),
there are uncredited vocals (female) on tracks 3 ("Harry To Hospital") and 11
("Tully Hooked"). Does anybody know who these vocalists are?
Kind regards,

I've actually seen the album you're talking about and scratched my head
wondering if this was the same band as Frith & Cora's... the answer is
definitely not, it's some rock band (I believe) that happened to take the
same name. What you're looking for is either of the vinyl records _Learn
to Talk_ or _Country of Blinds_, or the single Recommended Record cd that
puts those two together, though missing a couple of tracks.
Awesome stuff, top of my list with No Safety and the early Naked City records.

Musique Concrete restricted its use of sound material to the ones produced
exclusively by natural ways (no synthetic sounds): foot steps, sqweaky door, etc.
Electric instruments were used to manipulate these sounds, but not to produce
them.
Electronic music started soon after in Cologne (1951), and was based on sounds
produced synthetically (with basic electronic wave generators).
Then musique concrete and electronic music fused (which you could easily expect)
and the name musique concrete belongs to begone time.

Well, this seems to be a slow day in the JZ Corral, so I thought I'd
indulge myself in some spleen-venting:
Picked up the Uri Caine 'Urlicht' CD the other day; from one listen,
it seems to be a very fine work--that's not the problem. I think there
was a Winter & Winter discussion here a while back, though I didn't
follow it much, so this might have already been brought up, but:
This is the UGLIEST graphics/packaging job I've seen in a long, long
time! I had always found the JMT releases to be bad enough, sterile,
awful colors, shallow, etc., but this canary yellow faux corduroy wins
the ugly award hands down. The bland booklet isn't too offensive (and,
I guess, you have to give them credit for offering six translations of
the notes, though the notes themselves are blather) but the CD docking
station is clunky at best, the disc settling in with a disturbing
'click'. Blecch. Worst design idea I've seen since the hat Art
Double-LP boxes fromt he early 80's--anyone else still get annoyed
while sliding in the record next to one of these and having it catch
on the hidden lip? At least hat Art has progressed to those neat,
sleek envelopes they're using now (also got the Taku Sugimoto disc on
hat Noir--what a contrast!). OK, I feel better now.
The Caine disc does sound fine though; a ripe avenue for exploration,
I think. Love to hear an orchestra of free improvisors tackle some
Scriabin or, heaven forfend, Rachmaninov's 'Isle of the Dead'!

RecRec just told me last week that the double reissue
of the 2 Skeleton Crew LPs on one CD RecDec 512 has
just become available again in a new pressing.
Somebody said that Skeleton Crew disbanded in 86
but I think I last saw them in July? 87.
If somebody's desperate for the integral content
of the 2 LPs (there's no real reason for that, the
one song from each LP which is missing is probably
the weakest to end-of-the-90s ears), I'm sure there's
lots of copies of the LPs still floating around.

Really? Then I assume that you are not buying records very often :-).
I personnally think that the design is gorgeous and I am affraid that, as with
most digipack, it won't age gracefully. Also annoyed that getting the record
out can lead to some scratches. But besides that, I find the design fantastic.
I would be curious to know what you consider a gorgeous design.

I think that the new Downtown Lullaby package and design is great. The
type, photos, material, and silkscreening on the cd all work very well
together. Does anyone know who the designer at DOF is?
At the anchorage I was talking to this crazy french guy named Marco. He and
a bunch of his runarounds are filming a documentary on the DT jazz scene.
Does anyone know if this has been done before? Marco said that he and his
crew were well recieved by everyone for various interviews and the like.

Right. I wish ;-). FWIW, I'm coming at this from a background as a
painter, so many of the album designs I find most teeth-gratingly bad
are those using paintings as covers. Off the top of my head, some that
stick out as particularly irksome: Vol 2 of the Creative Construction
Company (if anyone remembers that far back), Julius Hemphill's
'Georgia Blue', Michael Smith's 'Geo Music' (if anyone knows _that_
one, I'll be impressed), Sonny Sharrock's 'Dance with Me, Montana'
(phew! absolutely horrid!), gosh, so many more...Sun Ra's
'Astro-Black'...the entire list would be looong...

Well, in recent years, of course, virtually all of Ikue Mori's work,
much of Thi Linh-Le's. I've always been fond of the painting on the
front of Rahsaan's 'Natural Black Inventions: Root Strata' (also a
great, great record). And, for that matter, the cover of the _1st_
volume of CCC was pretty nice. The Table of the Elements series, the hat
Art classical series (the red and white covers), etc, etc...

NOT! The type is too small (I'm tired of Corel types...), photos are
amatour-like, material is too soft. BAD cover design.
Now we will talk about CD-packaging. If everything is already said about
the music, why not? :-)

I agree with Patrice! But I have to agree with Brian also: this way of
packaging CD's is not practical. And he's right about JMT as well: their
design was macabre, just take look at any of Tim Berne records or
"Tongue in Groove" YAK! This type of design sais: "if you think this is
bad art, you will love it after listening to the music!" I'm lucky to be
on this mailing list: I don't have to choose records after cover art,
but after recommendations from you people. In other case I would NEVER
know Tim Berne works.
I think JMT/W&W was/is in shadow of ECM, other world-wide fanous german
label which is well known for its constant (boring), ascetic (dull)
design. I always thought JMT wants to say "NO" to ECM, with the music
and with the design. Now W&W is already well established and recognized
label, so tey can finally afford better cover art, packaging, they would
like to say: "take a look at this acid-yellow package, it will look
absolutely better on your shelf than yet another black ECM cover! And
the music is better too!"
OK, .

Now that I think about it, the only reason I've never been able to get
into Tim Berne is the Artwork - which is that album with the fish ?...
I was quite impressed by the photos and general design of Downtown
Lullaby (now playing), but I wouldn't have minded more liner notes. My
policy with
those paper cases is always to keep the cd itself in another
(plastic) case. Those four-cd-cases-that-only-come-with-two-cds are
particularly handy for that (eg the Masada chamber ensemble cases)

Subject: new label
Recently recieved this little tidbit from the Superchunk news list.
Superchunk's leader, Mac, is starting a new label, and what follows is his
description of it. Thought it may interest you.
"Wobbly Rail is a very small label i've started to release the type of music i
probably listen to more than any other - improvised music. Free Jazz, creative
music, whatever you want to call it, it's a music that's hard to find in this
country (most cd's are imports) though labels like AUM Fidelity, No More,
Tzadik, and Knitting Factory Works are releasing more and more stuff that you
can find easily.
I'm basically just doing this out of my house, on a very small level, knowing
that the stuff is pretty esoteric to many people and won't sell a ton, but i
think it's important to get it out there. The first three releases are:
- - Wadada Leo Smith / Harumi Makino Smith - "Condor, Autumn Wind"
- - AALY Trio + Ken Vandermark - "Stumble"
- - Steve Lacy - "Solo, Live at Unity Temple"
I feel lucky to be able to release these albums by musicians i've been a fan
of for years, so it's pretty exciting.
There's a website: http:\\wobbly.home.mindspring.com\
that i'm slowly getting up; there's some stuff there now.
And the name comes from a Cecil Taylor song "Excursion on a Wobbly Rail" from
his Looking Ahead! lp."
