Looking forward to hearing the new Lizards disc, Queen of all Ears, as
well as the soundtrack for Fishing with John series and the (hopefully)
soon to be released African Swimming / Manny & Lo soundtrack.
Meanwhile I'll continue to enjoy Evan Lurie's recent Tzadik release...
The new Ribot disc jams indeed. No shrieking guitars and some very
touching tunes, its excellent and no suprise for this long time fan.
New Tom Waits compilation is out -- no new tunes, just a compilation of
Island years tracks. But hey, this is "The Man" (the Fishing w/ John
soundtrack however, is rumored to have guest vocals by Mr. Waits....)
Dave Douglas - is there really a new Winter and Winter release? What
was the name of it again? I saw a Wayne Shorter tribute album filed
under Douglas the other day... anyone familiar with this disc..?

I stopped by Tonic to make sure JZ curated series is for real. I wonder if
this fiasco with the knit inspired Zorn to take his projects, and
associated muscians, to another venue?
Tonic has a few draw backs as far as a music club goes, however, the space
is smaller and more open than the knitting factory.

Acording to Artur Nowak the new Winter and Winter disk is entitled _Charm
of Night Sky_
- - "CHARM OF THE NIGHT SKY"
CD 'C56:07-13' WINTER & WINTER (910 015-2[G]) 1998.
Dave DOUGLAS: trumpet./ Greg COHEN: acoustic bass./ Mark FELDMAN:
violin./ Guy KLUCEVSEK: accordion.
Where did you find this, Artur?
_Stargazer_ is the only Wayne Shorter tribute disk that Dave has done, as
far as I know.
While Searching for _Charm of the Night Sky_, I came across _Moving
Portrait_. It was released on 16 Jun, 1998 and is DIW 3976934 2. Does
anyone know anything about this disk? Any idea of who the musicians are on
it?

It's the same sextet as the Booker Little "tribute" (IN OUR LIFETIME).
Relatively straight-ahead, with enormously complex yet non-academic
arrangements, and some gorgeous hall-of-fame percussion stylings by Joey
Baron. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this album. Only three
(obscure) Shorter tunes, the rest by Dave. I just love. A great great
great jazz record. My opinion, although I suspect it's a fact.
Does anyone know offhand if Dave is performing regularly w/ the Mahfouz
group? Have they or will they record? It sounds bad-ass.

My copy of "Het" also has a zayin on the disc. I bought it at Jazz
Record Mart in Chicago and I opened it while riding on the train from
downtown to Oak Park, on my way toward seeing ROVA at Unity Temple.
Luckily, I had also just purchased "Zayin," so I was able to compare
the two discs and see that it was just a printing error and not the
wrong disc entirely.

Yes, it's brand new Winter & Winter release, and Partice already pointed
out my mistake in the title of this record. It's called "CHARMS OF THE
NIGHT SKY".
> Where did you find this, Artur?
Saturn, Alex Platz, Berlin, Germany, Europe (the other side of the world
you live in). Wow, am I the first peson on this mailinglist who get this
album? I already thought I live at the end of the world! ;-) Thank
god Berlin is 6 hours away from the place I live in Poland!
W&W already released few other interresting CDs: Eugene Chadbourne in
duets with Marc Ribot and Noel Akchote, Marc Ducret solo album (if my
memory serves), Paul Motian Trio (with Lovano and Frisell), Uri Caine
"Urlicht", compilation from the first few releases... sorry, I just
don't remember the details.

Not the end of the world when it comes to Winter & Winter. The
label's North American distribution is, to put it kindly, spotty.
It took me about eight months to get my hands on Uri Caine's
Mahler project and I got one of the few copies in Toronto.
It's a great disc, by the way.

Subject: Laswell channels Miles
This Just In:
According to the latest (July 1998) issue of downbeat, it seems
that Bill Laswell is not only a bassist, a producer and a remixer of
tapes, but that he has a special relationship to the dead.
In an article on his Panthalassa project, when asked what he
thinks about critics, fans and (probably) the original producer, Teo Macero
complaining about his remixs of Miles' 1969 to 1974 work he replies:
"I knew Miles and I absolutely know he would have liked
this. Nothing else matters. Not on review. Not one comment."
Do you think that since Bill seems to be tuned into Miles'
wavelength on the "other side" he could find out some more info from him?
I'm mostly interested to know how he's getting along with Eric Dolphy
in the next world, not to mention his relations with Monk and Mingus.
And people talked about Ra's weirdness

Thanks for the information on African/Eastearn musicians, I also was

The decision last week end by Secretary of Culture of Buenos Aires to
cancel founding suport for avant-garde music event "Experimenta '98"
sent an abrupt final for this "suposed to be" second edition.
The Secretary was going to provide $140.000 for this purpose, but they
finally alleged budget problems that meant the cancellation of the event
(musicians originally announced included A. Lucier, M. Dresser, E.
Chadbourne and J. Zorn Masada amoung others).

This had Bill Carrothers on piano, James Genus on bass and Billy Hart on
Drums. Recorded 12/29 and 30/97 in NYC. 9 tracks. All Douglas originals
except Roses Blue, My Old Man and The Same Situation by Joni Mitchell. Ive
listened to it a couple of times so far and been very impressed.

It is scheduled for U.S. release through Allegro in August. It should be easy
to find when it comes out. I was in Tower two days ago and they had lots of
copies of the Uri Caine Mahler project and the latest Motian Trio disc, which
leads me to believe distribution for the label is finally underway and it's
going to be reasonably solid. If your local indie store seems to be clueless
tell them to contact Allegro. If you see new Black Saint, Soul Note and
Songlines discs where you shop, you'll eventually see Winter & Winter there
too.

Are there any opinions about "The Circle Maker"? I bought it a week

Take one part original recording of a Chinese opera, mix in samples of
same by Heiner Goebbels. Put aside to cool for 10 or so years. Fold in
treatments by Otomo Yoshihide and crew. Microwave and serve. Very tasty.
Season to taste.
A fine disc; get it.

Before you go out with the villagers to burn Laswell at the stake, you
should know that Laswell has said in a few different places (I'll try to
dig them up for you if I can find them) that he did meet with Miles more
than a couple of times. After Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" broke, Davis
talked to him about producing and album, but in the end Laswell passed
since he would have only done a few tracks, and he wanted to produce a
whole album.
