There are three albums out by him:
_Fear of Gravity_ From 1993, his first work and you can kinda tell.
_Alterstill_, from 1995 which you have.
_Fractuur_ from 1997.  Same exquisite packaging, sound sources still
include Zorn (as well as a host of others, this time including live
musicians also).  A quieter, much more refined sound.  Very excellent.
I haven't found much information about any work beyond these three
releases, but they are most excellent.  I'd highly recommend finding
_Fractuur_ if you like _Alterstill_.  _FoG_ is supposedly hard to find, but
Manifold Records in the US recently recieved about a hundred copies or so
from the label and may still have a few for sale.  (www.manifoldrecords.com)

Leon (and interested parties...) -

John Lurie taped at least 4 or 5 episodes of an aborted Japanese TV
show (series called "Fishing w/ John") a while back.  His guests were T
Waits, Matt Dillon, Jim Jarmusch, Willem Dafoe & Dennis Hopper (those are
one I know about.)  I was fortunate enough to catch the episodes with
Waits and Dafoe (both hilarious) at the Harvard Film Archive last year,
where Mr Lurie himself was present for the screening.  I hope the whole
lot is eventually released on tape, as I also don't have (want) cable.

On related note, supposedly www.stangeandbeautiful.com is new J Lurie
web site were one potentially can find out about soundtrack to above as
well as the latest Lounge Lizards disc... So far its still under construction.

from what i know, there is a
Musica Transonic & Eye cassette
which Nanjo released, but no CD.
there has been talk of releasing
the cassette as a CD, but nothing
definite yet. as for locating a
copy of this, it may prove difficult.
Nanjo doesn't answer mail very
well or fill orders. but you can
always try!

There is one major club playing our music : les Instants Chavires in
Montreuil... there are some other places but just a few, it is true.
BUT : the live music is GREAT in Paris.

Just a few names for May :
The Ex, Marc Ducret, Tim Berne, Phil Minton, Roger Turner, Ferdinand
Richard, Otomo Yoshihide, Benoit Delbecq, Steve Arguelles....
So, I think you can't say that "Paris is currently one of the most
depressing town for live music ".

Some young musicians even told me that it is more appealing to play in Pa=
ris
because no one has locked the scene, yet. I mean everything is possible,
right now in Paris... a kind of artistic freedom with no "big names" for
reference. A bit like New York in the 80=B0s with Zorn, no ?

BUT (re-BUT in fact) : June and July will be the months of the World Cup =
of
Soccer (what a shame !) and no major musical event will be planned... For
example, les Instants Chavires will close the 5th of June (official date =
but
some more gigs after with a special mention to the Label Rectangle Night
with Noel Aktchote and many more on the 25th).

Forget about soccer (football for European) : it sucks... but live music =
in
Paris don't !

It came out several weeks ago. I'm listening to it now -- it's quite
wonderful, although the differences from the Macero mixes are subtler (and
more effective) than I'd imagined they would be.

I said that because everytime I encouter an artist touring in Europe, Paris
shines by its absence on his list. And yes, sometimes somebody really plays
there.

The list of artists that you give is the equivalent of 2-3 weeks at the
Knitting Factory. How is it in Paris? One year...

That's a really cute understatement :-).

I am happy to learn that Paris and Portland (OR) are at the same level:
everything is possible. But I guess that would also apply to every virgin

The ONLY month of MAY at "Les Instants Chavires" (4 to 26th to be more exact
!)...
(so, 22 days...more or less 3 weeks)

Ok, what I would like to mean is that the Paris scene is more opened to
young and fresh artists....

If the dowtown scene is so developped right now in the Big Apple, it is
because some years ago, artists had the opportunities to play in clubs...
such as the Knitting Factory... Remember Naked City...

Right now, this place is a "locked place" because it is a "must-to-go" sc=
ene
in order to be recognised. I think that in New York, big names such as Zo=
rn
or Dresser muffle a bit young talents... Look at the Knitting Factory
program : I almost know every one who play this month... No discovery, no
risk.... or just a few with "names".

In short, what I would like to mean is : maybe, Paris is more opened and =
we
can compare it to  the old New York scene of the 80=B0s !


BUT it is true that in France : there are a lot of efforts for "creative
music" (festival, clubs, associations and so on ) but what a pity when yo=
u
have more musicians on stage than in the club...  ;((

I wonder if cities go through cyclical stages of high creativity and
oversaturation in a particular medium? From an art standpoint, it seems
like Paris went through an extended art explosion in the beginning of the
19th century, then dying down in the early 20th century.  I wonder if this
could be characterized about nyc and jazz? Sometimes I wonder if nyc is
starting to decline as a haven for artists, musicians, writers, poets,
dancers, etc...

I think that we are just lucky when an individual decides, based on passion,
to do something that does not make any sense from a financial point of view:
running a venue/festival dedicated to non-mainstream music.

Thanks to people like Sylvain Donikian for the Dunois in Paris (in the '80s),
Levasseur for the Victoriaville festival, Dorf for the KF, Bachetta for Les
Instants Chavires in Paris, etc.

No... well, maybe.  I'm not sure.  I heard somewhere (probably here) that an
album of dub Marley was being done by Laswell and it would be called Devotional
Mix Translation, or something to that effect.  But I haven't heard of anything
like that.  Is it supposed to be ambient remixes?  I don't remember...

It's wunnerful, to boot.  Powerful and creaetive, less abstract than Marc's
two solo albums but less circumspect than his band albums.  Marc on lots of
guitars, Bobby on drums (acoustic, Hywel, though occasionally they trigger
samples) and piano.  But it't not out here in the States till July or
August...

Paris is NOT as depressing as you think. I go to Les Instants Chavires twice
a week. I have sometimes to choose between different gigs at different
places.
There IS live music in Paris and a very interesting emerging scene: Thierry
Madiot, Noel Akchote,
Benoit delbecq, Didier Petit, Marc Ducret, Helene Labarriere, Francois
Corneloup, Sylvain Kassap...
but a was saying Olivier, the problem is that
there are sometimes more people on stage than in the audience.
There is a problem of diffusion of this music. There are only two
interesting record shops in Paris: Wave (rue Keller) and bimbo Tower
(Impasse Josset). These two shops are near Bastille. You can find some
interesting records in the FNAC (our "cultural supermarkets") but they are
very expensive. The major problem is the price of the records and the
dictatorship of official institution and media who do not promote this
music.

As we say in French, "tu reves", you're dreaming. The scene (I hate "scen
es") isn't that bad, but there's nothing much worth cheering about eith
er. The Instants struggles on a shoestring budget to put on interesting
 music (go see the BIMhuis in Amsterdam if you want to see a really sup
erb well-funded concerthall), all credit to it. Comparisons to 80's New
 York seem to be misplaced for a number of reasons: number of musicians
, style of music, venues to play at, availability of recording possibil
ities etc. I love Paris with a passion (I've been here for ten years),
but things are far from perfect. That said, thank GOD the Knitting Fact
ory didn't open up in Paris..
One last thing: nobody seems to be able to spell his name correctly, but
let me lust correct you all: it's A-K-C-H-O-T-E, OK?
