  126. I can't explain it. Character defect perhaps (mine). Perhaps seeing him live
  127. was what really killed the recordings for me. I saw him in Santa Monica on
  128. the BEFORE WE WERE BORN tour and it remains tied for first with the
  129. absolutely GREATEST performances I have ever heard. I'm a HUGE Frisell fan.
  130. I just don't like his own recordings. It doesn't make any sense. I've traded
  131. in every Frisell CD I've ever purchased. I do love him with Berne
  132. ('Theoretically' and 'Fulton St. Maul') and Zorn and Bryars and Motian and
  133. that clarinetist whose name I'm blocking right now....................

  156. I haven't heard much Don Cab, but my impression from talking with Ian is
  157. that their pre-S&S material was very tightly composed.  S&S, as I
  158. understand it, use composed motivic cells, which the players are free to
  159. interpret at any tempo and repeat as often as they like.  Kevin Shea,
  160. their original drummer, had been playing aroung Pittsburgh with free music
  161. groups for some time before S&S formed.

  198. thread being that they are maverick artists all working within American

  256. The other sad problem is that we're not living in the era of "budget 
  257. labels". Go to any bargain basement outlet like those we all remember 
  258. from our youth and instead of 99 cent Zoot Sims records on Dawn or Duke 
  259. Ellington's A Drum Is A Woman on Columbia or Sun Ra At Montreux on Inner 
  260. City, we'll see major label best-ofs and those odd labels that seem to 
  261. specialize in strange "greatest hits" collections from artists who never 
  262. had hits.

  264. I think it's part of the globalization of international capitalism, since 
  265. many of these collections come from somewhere offshore.

  311. I agree, I think Frisell has made several excellent records as a leader,
  312. going all the way back to "Look Out For Hope."  In fact, I'm write now
  313. listening to "Gone, Like A Train."  In my head, I keep hearing it
  314. against the Power Tools trio from about 10 years ago, which highlights
  315. one of my great pleasures in listening; hearing an artist grow and
  316. change and mature and focus.  People are always going to like certain
  317. periods of an artist's growth [Elvis Costello especially comes to mind
  318. here] but the artist is still, hopefully, going to change through time.
  319.  
  320. And then there's Frisell's non-solo work.  Sure, he's got the rock edge
  321. to things on Naked City and other "downtown" records, but there's also
  322. his long tenure in the Paul Motian Trio, the Bass Desires records, etc. 
  323. He's been malleable, in a good way, for a long time now, so I'd be hard
  324. pressed to define a non-solo style that is monolithic enough to compare
  325. everything against.

  529. collection several years ago and while I have meant to buy some of his
  530. other recordings, all I have is a tape of that record. It's called "How Are
  531. Things In Your Town" 1960 Blue Thumb Records 2 LP set.

  533. The only other instances of him I have are on two Hal Wilner
  534. compilation/tribute projects: "Stay Awake" - the Disney Tribute; and
  535. "Closed on Account of Rabies" - the Edgar Allen Poe Tribute.

  578. Last week alone I picked up Anthony Davis's "X", a John Carter disc,
  579. a Cypher 7 disc, Orbital, Jon Hassell, Cecil Taylor, Rapoon, and 
  580. Artists United against Apartheid, all for under $8 apiece. Not a sorry
  581. stack of "bad 80s rock albums", hmm? And the bins here in DC are, for
  582. the most part, *pathetic* compared the amazing stuff that's to be found
  583. in the bins in Austin and Dallas...

  640. I live in Portland, ME and in the last few weeks I've bought on vinyl
  641. stuff by Henry Threadgill Sextett, Walt Dickerson, Tim Berne, Hank
  642. Roberts, Music Improvisation Company (w/Bailey, Parker, etc.), Butch
  643. Morris, Phillipine Gong Music, Steve Reich, "Blood" Ulmer, etc. All for
  644. very cheap (Ulmer's 'Odyssey' was $1) AND THIS IS MAINE!!!!
