They carry DIW at a decent price. Masadas are under "M" not "Z" in their

Subject: Zorn and Bondage
I am wondering if any one else is confused or put off by Zorn's interest
in bondage. I'm confused by the bondage interest in his work ( such as
the cover for the Painkiller live in japan disc and the naming of
selections like Osaka Bondage). The Painkiller live album is called
Rituals so I believe the cover photo relates to this title, but what
confuses me is how bondage relates to Zorn's music which to me has meant
breaking though musical bondage's. Looking up Zorn's artist list from
the Grand Guignol disc, I found sites on the web about Dan Oniroku who
is as much as I've seen a bondage artist. The theme of bondage is the
only one that doesn't make sense to me in Zorn's work ( even the use of
a serial killers writing on a wall for Buried Secrets makes sense to
me). I would appreciate hearing others on the lists thoughts on this
subject. One other quick comment yesterday I picked up the new Music
Revelation Ensemble release that has Zorn playing on it (called Cross
Fire) it is interesting hearing Zorn play James Blood Ulmer"s
compositions. The only bad part of the Disc is that Zorn and Pharaoh
Sanders never play on a track together.

I just saw it as an extension of the whole torture thing. Most of the
titles are related to torture, insanity, sex or horror, so bondage just
seems like a natural inclusion.

Cheap Thrills is a great source; also check out
Verge music distribution in Peterborough at
http://www.ptbo.igs.net/~verge/
(which is cheaper probably depends on which province
you live in, since if you order out of province you don't
pay provincial sales tax)

Schleep is fantastic!! I too, was lukewarm to it at first, but it has
definitely grown on me. Much like Rockbottom did many years ago. I know
this would be heresy in some quarters, but I think Schleep may even
supplant RockBottom as the quintessential Wyatt album.

"For Morton Feldman"? The only piece of that name that I know of is by (I
think) Stephen Mosko.
Hmm... You might mean "For Christian Wolff"? I haven't heard it, not being
able to convince myself to shell out the US$60 or so for it. (Anyone wanna

anyone familiar with Peter Thomas' Sound Orchestra??
he did music for film in the late 60's/early 70's.....the music I heard
was for elec. guitar, drums, bass, brass, electronics, voice......had
elements of jazz, lounge/exotica, spacy elec. sounds, even early hints of
drum n bass!!
I heard some of his music from the film Chariots of the Gods on Spinning
on Air, a radio show in NYC, the other night.....its pretty wild stuff.
Im just curious if anyone knows about his work...and if hes still around.
Im sure Zorn must know of him!

(The Second Annual Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival)
New, avant-garde and experimental music - May 6 through 10, 1998
From May 6th through the 10th, 1998, Bliss Records in association with
The Russian-American Cultural Forum are pleased to announce
The Second Annual Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival (SKIF2),
celebrating the life and work of the innovative Russian
pianist/composer/actor Sergey Kuryokhin (1954 - 1996).
In January, 1997, cellist and composer Boris Rayskin organized the 11-day
Sergey Kuryokhin International Interdisciplinary Festival (SKIIFestival) in
New York City dedicated to the memory of Sergey Kuryokhin.
Tragically, Boris's life ended soon after the festival. SKIF2 is dedicated
in his memory.
SKIF2 will once again bring together many artists with whom Kuryokhin
collaborated, as well those close to his creative spirit, to perform in this
eclectic musical celebration. The festival will showcase the most cutting
edge avant-garde, jazz, and experimental rock musicians from Russia, the
United States and Europe including:
"Silver Apples", "Tequila Jazz", "Kolibri", Rashied Ali, Marilyn Crispell,
"Tri-O", Vladimir Tarasov, Sakari Luoma, Yudanov and Katz, David Soldier,
"White Out", Borah Bergman, Cyro Baptista, "Vershki da Koreshki", "The
Slackers", Volkov-Trio, Spectre and Sensational, Ned Rothenberg, Anatole
Gerasimov, Aleksey Khvostenko, William Hooker, DJ-Olive + WE, Peter Brotzman
and special guest artist Chico Freeman and many more.
Daniel Rayskin, Boris's Brother will perform a special piece dedicated to
his late brother.
"SKIF2", will be held at the best venues of New York City: THE COOLER, CAMI
HALL, MERKIN HALL, and the ELBOW ROOM. The festival will be an opportunity
for further collaboration between Russian, European and American performers
who will share their music with New York audiences.
SKIF2 is produced by Bliss Records in Association with The Russian-American
Cultural Forum. Artistic Direction for the festival is provided by Seva
Gakkel, chairman of the Board of The Sergey Kuryokhin Foundation, St.
Petersburg, Russia, and Anatole Gerasimov.

Through "Locus Solus" and the first Golden Palominos album, I became interested
in Mark (M.E.) Miller. I know he's on the Material "Live From Soundscape" CD,
but I can't distinguish him from Moss and Noyes on this set.
What can you tell me about Miller? What recordings of his are available and
recommended? Is he still active?
The same question goes for Charles K. Noyes -- I love his appearance on
"Memory Serves" and I also have "Improvised Music New York 1981".
Kind regards,

well i guess most of you guys already know that..
Peter Thomas is a german filmcomposer...he had his most active period in
the 60s and 70s when he did the music for german crime films and sci-fi
stuff... he worked alot for tv also...
he is still active today and will soon release a new CD called "warped
back to earth" which will feature guys from Tortoise, Mouse on mars,
Pulp, Stock-hausen and Walkman etc.
some really important musicians such as Klaus Doldinger (passport) and
Jan Hammer started their carreers playing in his sound-orchester.
there is a peter thomas sample on the new PULP single and Mr. Bungle did
cover versions of some of his stuff on the Disco Volante tour...
some CDs out at the moment:
RAUMPATROUILLE - amazing, essential the BEST
FILMMUSIK - GREAT STUFF!!
100% COTTON - well ok but not essential
CHARIOTS OF THE GODS - i guess that one was not rereleased on CD
STEINER, THE IRON CROSS pt. 2 - pretty normal filmmusic...
THUNDER ON THE BORDERLINE - music for a german western movie, nice
EASY LOUNGIN` - nice compilation for the start
KRIMINALFILMMUSIK - dont have it yet but similar to FILMMUSIK
hope that helps

Subject: Re: Naked City
> Okay, who out there knows ALL the Naked City records, and what can you
> tell me about each one?
Naked City - a big mixture of jazzy stuff, bluesy stuff and a bit of thrash
here and there. Probably the best one to start on - it includes covers of
James Bond, Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman and the brilliant Contempt by
George Delerue, among others.
Grand Guignol - one long noisy track followed by a bunch of classical
covers (Debussy, Scriabin, Messaien, Ives and Di Lassus) and then a whole
lot of "thrash jazz" - short bursts of energy with heavy guitars, saxophone
squealing and Eye screaming his lungs out. These pieces have got titles
like Pigfucker, which is an added bonus.
Torture Garden - all material on this disc overlaps from the last two - it
includes the whole thrash jazz section from Grand Guignol and some of the
heavier tracks from Naked City.
Radio - probably the most fun album - included is a list of influences for
each track which is supposed to help you figure out where the band is
coming from in each piece (it rarely helps). There are a lot of fully
cohesive tracks here. But just in the first few tracks there are elements
of funk, freejazz, classical, metal, bebop, surf and rockabilly.
Absinthe - ambient soundscapes perhaps? I don't know how to describe this.
Apparently, they set out to make noises that you wouldn't easily recognise.
Heretic - noisy tracks with smaller groups from the band getting together
and feeding off each other. Lots of squealing, screaming and fucking about.
Leng Tche - a torturous slow heavy piece, over 30 minutes in length. It
depicts a chinese torture and so in the middle there is a lot of screaming.
There are (very) sustained chords, very few chord changes though. You
shouldn't listen to this while watching the counter on your cd player.
Well, that's all of them I guess. By the way, this is a really cool thing
to do to if you want to waste some time.

"Quartet". But a followup question: is this cd basically a soundtrack to
the animation, or is there other stuff on there too?

His CD Quartet w/ Eyvind Kang, Ron MIles and (wow, I can't remember the
fourth person) has several tracks from the Far Side (though I missed the
special, so I don't know if these are the actual recordings). I don't have
it yet, but Gone Like a Train also has some tracks that I know were on

Ah! I haven't heard the HatArt recording to which you referred, but I've
heard the other one (was it on Newport Classics?). It's not one of my
favorites, though it's a good example of his dense large-ensemble works,
in the same class as Neither and the "... and Orchestra" series. -
