I have seen this before, in many many interviews when a person is
being quoted, but the meaning eldues me. What does "sic" mean? Is it a
noise of disapproval? Thank you.

[sic] simply means that the previous word or phrase whas exactly how the
person said or wrote it, improper spellings and all. It's usually used to
show that the original speaker or writer made the spelling mistake or
whatever, not the editor or interviewer. I've also seen it in the context
of puns in writing or interviews.

Not at all. One puts (sic) next to a quote to indicate that it is being
quoted 'as is.' For example if you are posting a quote that uses "he" as a
generic pronoun for God, and you are a truly enlightened being who knows God
is trans-sexual, in the quote you would put a (sic) next to the word "he."
If you had asked what does "sick" mean, I would have quoted you by typing:
Jason asked, "What does "sick" (sic) mean?" Thus, I would be quoting you
directly while letting everyone know that I am wise and know that "sic" is
really spelled "sic" not "sick."

I got the credits off the Japanese CD, which I don't own but saw at the
studio two or three years ago. I don't know if there is anything with
listing by track, but if I spend a few minutes with the CD, I should be
able to figure it out.
Which I will try to do.

While floating around on the web, I found a site that said Laswell was
involved in some capacity on two movie soundtracks, Colors (1988) and
Clandestins (aka Stowaways - 1997). Does anyone know anything about
these? It also mention two yoga tapes. Am I correct in assuming that
these were probably the songs that resulted in Asana?

Eyvind also plays on Bill Frisell's recent "Quartet" album (inspired by
Gary Larson cartoons) and collaborated with Bill and Wayne Horvitz doing
music for Bill Burroughs three-CD reading of Naked Lunch.

I think the best starter for Elliott Sharp's music would be
'Interference' by Elliott Sharp/Carbon. Carbon is his rock-based project
and this disc is all instrumental and features a line-up of electric
harp, electric bass, sampler, drums and e# on doubleneck guitarbass,
saxophones, samplers, etc. After that, I'd recommend a string quartet
like 'XenocodeX' or something. This guy's awesome!!!

An addendum to the Gainsbourg thread (meant to post this a ways back,
but forgot); Einsturzende Neubauten had a Gainsbourg cover - Je t'aime -
on their first long-player, "Kollaps" (whenever the hell that was). A
kinda brut/dub version of the original, in the vein Neubauten had mined
previously but had just about abandoned at that point.

Along with comp. appearances and playing on other artist's albums
(Sun City Girls, We etc.) he's got two other releases under his
own name:

Hi
A couple of things on the "real" didj.
Aboriginal languages are tribal, so depending on which tribe you speak to
there will be a different name for the instrument.
Secondly, there was no written aboriginal language at the time European
"settlement" so any written version of an aboriginal word is, at best, a
very approximate transliteration.
FWIW Laswell has production credits on aboriginal band Yothu Yindi's 1993
disc "Freedom".

hey now,
just picked up a new (?) Eskelin disc
this weekend. released by HatHut with
Andrea Parker (accordion, sampler) and
Jim Black (perc). am listening to it
for the first time, but so far, very
nice.
seven tracks in all, most of them
eight minutes and longer. the music
ranges from be-bopish to interludes of
group improvisation/solo saxophone
noodling and some kind of crazy
mixture of Dave Douglas' "old europa"
Tiny Bell Trio sound with elements
of klezmer. those who have listened
to the Rodd Keith disc Tzadik released
might hear some moments of family
resemblance with respect to the more
uptempo parts, esp punctuated with
the use of accordian.
i admit i still haven't yet tracked
down a copy of his previous disc on
Songlines, so i don't know how these
compare.

Actually, the one I had in mind was the newer release, Message From
Home, which has (among others) Foday Musa Suso, Hamid Drake, Aiyb
Dieng, Bernie Worrell, Jeff Bova, Charnett Moffett, etc, but no gnawa
musicians. I was going from memory on the percussionists, who provide
an overall atmosphere rather than any specific African content.
