I too have heard that Super Roots 3 & 5 were kinda... scary. However, Super
Roots 6 is a really good album; it has 18 tracks (if I remember correctly)
that have a number as name and are mostly instrumental. It has very little in
common with Super Roots 1, though: I would say it is more rock-oriented, many
tracks being psychedelic guitar riffs. However, there are some 'tribal'
tracks, even some fake world music (pygmy chants, etc.)

As always with the Boredoms, this is a bit challenging, but if you liked Wow2
you should definitely like it. The artwork is very good, too, and there's even
the sleeve for Super Roots 7!

BTW, I have the japanese release, is it any different from the american one?
And does anybody have any info about the Boredoms signing to Blast First in
Europe? Will there be european releases of their albums, new releases ?

A few random thoughts, responses and questions :
For those looking for more work by Mr. Ribot I would recommend Evan
Lurie's first album "Selling Water by the Shore" (I think thats the title) as
well as Sam Phillips wonderful "Omnipop."  The Tom Waits / Lounge
Lizards & even the Elvis Costello contributions are all excellent as well.
And a thumbs up for "Shoe String Symphonies."
The new Filmworks IV is great and the new Naked City boxed set
decently priced (almost a 2 for 1 at the local shops.)  I'm looking forward
to finding the new Fred Frith film series disc.  Has anyone a good (or
bad) word for it?
Have y'all heard the Bill Frisell / Elvis Costello live disc?  Its an import
recorded maybe a couple of years ago and they do maybe six tunes
(mostly Elvis C songs) with a quiet guitar and a whispering vocal.  Yet
another great album.
Where do people put all the CDS that seem to proliferate endlessly?
Suppose there could be worse problems to debate in life.

I picked it up Friday, and after about 6 close listenings over the
course of 3-4 days, the structure of each of the pieces became started
to become apparent to me. Not as thematically unified as 'Just the Facts
and Pass the  Bucket,' but each piece a masterpiece.

It's not jazz, it's not fusion, just... beautiful music.

This man is a genius.

Nevertheless, I would hardly call this CD accessible, by most people's
listening skills.

just to clear up a few things:

super roots 3 is only 30 minutes long, super roots 5 is the 64 minute
piece.  both are available from better mail order sevices, and even cd
now.  super roots 2, the 5 minute ep given away w/ the japanese chocolate
synthesizer is out of print, but i got a copy of it from forced exposure
just a couple of months ago.  jimmy said he had a few copies left, so if
you really want it, hurry up.  you'll have to buy the choc synth cd as
well (they're packed together).  its not listed on his web page, so e

The European release was kind of a surprise to everyone including Bill from
what I know.  The US release should happen in the next month, but depending
on who picks it up for distribution, it may take a while to get out there.

The next Ion release will be available long before Caroline starts shipping
it.  I will post here, and hopefully be able to give some sources for
buying it mail order.

Not to my knowledge.  DIW is licensing certain things to Koch for release
domestically but has not yet taken the final step of actually signing a
distribution agreement for imports.  And those two discs fell into some
kind of black hole during which DIW was NOT licensing anything to Koch, as
did David S. Ware's latest release.  (I know, this doesn't make much
sense.)

I just saw the June Koch book and it included two DIW-licensed things, one
of which was the new Shannon Jackson album, "Shannon's House."  This was
the disc released immediately prior to Greg and Dougie's albums.  The other
was half of a four CD tribute to Monk which came out a few years ago and
will be released in two parts.

I know there are now plans for both new and old albums to be licensed, but
I wouldn't count on Dougie or Greg to be aomng them, unfortunately.  I know
this sucks, but...

Ok, another question: I heard from Jamie Saft (who's got a delightful new
record on Avant that you should all check out) that Avant will soon be
getting a reasonably comprehensive U.S. distribution deal with Koch.  Is
this reasonably correct?

And something else that's been bugging me:  Is there any connection
between DIW and Avant?  I was under the impression that "Way Low" and
"Minor Swing" were on the former while they're actually on the latter, and
vice-versa for a couple other records.  Is my befuddlement founded on
anything or am I just hopelessly confused?

It started in April with four releases, then there were four more in May
and there are four more in June.  Mostly back catalog but also Derek
Bailey/DJ Ninj, Dim Sum Clip Job, Smarnamisa - Resia Valley Music, and Duck
Baker.  They'll continue to roll out four old ones per month and presumably
scatter some new ones as they become available.  I second the notion for
Saft/Vu.

"Way Low" and "Minor Swing" are both on DIW.  There is a connection between
DIW and Avant having to do with production and in many cases distribution
(although clearly not in the U.S. any more).  The difference between DIW
and Avant is that Zorn directs Avant, not DIW.  I guess there have been
cases where Zorn has done things that ended up on DIW (Masada obviously)
and there are some things that would seem to be Zorn projects but may not
have been (Arcana, which is actually a Laswell project I guess; Marc
Ribot's latest, etc).

I'm talking a lot but isn't it obvious by now that I really don't have a
clue how most of this works? :-)  No one knows but Zorn and his cabal of
coworkers, the Gnomes of Zurich, none of whom are whispering in my ear late
at night anymore (you know who you are)...  Now *Patrice* they're still
talking to, maybe.

The Dougie Bowne album 'One Way Elevator' is on Avant. It's a trio album
with Bowne on drums, John Medeski on piano and Fred Hopkins on bass.
It's quite jazzy and very cool. I have an cassette of it that I got a
while ago, long before it was released. It's sort of short but well
worth it... especially those who want to hear Medeski playing piano. If
you get this album and enjoy it then pick up Medeski, Martin & Woods's
first album on Accurate called 'Notes From The Underground'. You'll like
it. See ya!

I'm confused.  All three of these records (plus the Shannon Jackson record
mentioned later in Steve's post) showed up at my local store about a month
ago.  I thought they were being distributed by Koch.  Who is distributing
them, then, and why are they so much easier to find in Pittsburgh than
in NYC?

Yes he is coming to the Montreal Jazz fest, with Massada. But it's a
shame it's going to take place at the Gesu... This place doesn't even
hold 150 persons.

my friend Thurston Hunger is producing a
Mayhem special this sunday (5-11) on KFJC
89.7 FM exploring John Zorn's Tzadik label. i
will be sitting in as a guest, adding tidbits
and general banter when appropriate. we will
be playing tracks from nearly every release
in all of the different series (Composer,
Radical Jewish Culture, New Japan, Archival,
Lunatic Fringe, Film Music) with some
discussion about Zorn and Tzadik, as well as
Avant and DIW.

the show runs from 11pm to 2am PDT, a funky
timeslot i know, but... if you own a VCR,
hook it up to your receiver and using the
timer record the show while you sleep.

part two airs the following sunday (5-18),
