think from what I saw on a zorn page, it has something to do with cobra?
Also, is the naked city box set just a repackaging of all the naked city
stuff, or does it have new material, and how much of the set is previously

It's a Cobra recording, done in Tokyo with all Japanese musicians. It's
actually my favorite recorded Cobra, a piece which can be lots of fun to
see performed but I feel does not translate well to recording. Tokyo Ops
features a mix of traditional Japanese musicians and noise-types, and just
the juxtapostion of the totally sublime and delicate music with raging
guitar noise is pretty fantastic.

Scott Rosenberg will be hosting a mini-festival of music...with between
30-35 of the Bay Area's most unique and creative musicians in an entirely
open context. The only determined element will be the combinations of
players.
The concert features a vast array and diversity of instrumentalists. The

Plonsey (reeds), John Bischoff (electronics), Chery E. Leonard (viola),
Tim White (sitar), Bob Boster (electronics), Tim Perkis (electronics),
Graham Connah (keys), Morgan Guberman (voice), Brian S. Pearson
(percussion), Krys Bobrowski (french horn), Brian kane (reeds,
banjo), John Shiurba (guitar), Damon Smith (bass), John Ingle (reeds),
Peter Valsamis (percussion), Ron Heglin (trombone), Tom Dambly (trumpet),
Beth Lissick (spoken word), Erin Esplanade ('cello), Ashley Adams (bass),

This concert will function as a final SF date for Scott Rosenberg who is
moving out of the area in June. Rosenberg has been an active participant
and organizer in the improvised and new music world for the past three

hi,
since I have to write and perform music for a theatre play about the
childhood of a jewish boy in Poland around 1940, I'd like to get into
traditional jewish music, especially of Russian, Polish or other east
European origin. Apart from the popular Giora Feidmann-Klezmer and the
assimilated stuff of the NY radical jewish culture movement I am absolutely
virgin when it comes to jewish music. Could anyone recommend her/his
favourites or tell me about the canon? Recommendations about contemporary
artists, traditional style or modern, are welcome too.

Soybelman is part of a group called Ne Zhdali from Estonia. An interesting
group, less hardcore leaning than Kletka Red, utilizing brass instruments

Czech President Vaclav Havel and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright
Visit the Knitting Factory
NEW YORK - The Knitting Factory in New York City is always ready for
anything when John Zorn plays. But Zorn's Chamber Masada found some most
unusual guests in the audience for the second set on Thursday night, May
15. Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson played host to Czech Republic president
Vaclav Havel and his new wife and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright
and their entourage.
Havel, in town for talks that may bring the Eastern Block into NATO,
contacted Lou Reed prior to his visit to arrange a bit of sightseeing and
clubhopping during his New York sojourn. Reed, who has been seen numerous
times recently at the Knitting Factory as both performer and spectator,
contacted Knitting Factory founder Michael Dorf to arrange a special
reception for Havel. Dorf let John Zorn know what would be happening in
advance, and plans were made. The Knitting Factory was crawling with
secret service before long, and the best was yet to come...
Little did anyone know that Havel and his wife, escorted by Reed and Laurie
Anderson, would also invite Secretary of State Madeline Albright, holder of
the third highest office in the country. Ms. Albright and Havel
immediately engaged in animated conversation, whereupon Zorn, from the
stage, peered up to the balcony and said, "You up there, shut the f**k up,
listen to the music!" whereupon conversation did in fact cease.
Needless to say an international incident did not occur. Everyone reported
having a terrific time and enjoyed the music greatly. Even Zorn knew it
had been an historic occasion, and gave Dorf a wink on his way out the
door.

Unnh, had the happy good fortune to last week pick up a copy of a record
by Gershon Kingsley, "Mozart After Dark". Kingsley is known perhaps to
some of you as half of the paragon of maniacal excellence that recorded
"The In Sound From Way Out", inna 'Sixties. Anyways, "Mozart..." is a
great and strange thing: wierd, mock-jazz derangements of
Mozart tunes; with scat-style arias, winds by escapees of the Vienna State
Opera Symphony, the Jazz Rhythm Gruppe (was this Franz Kogelmann's
combo?...anyone?), and Kingsley himself arranging, conducting and bashing at a harpsichord. Some track titles: "Figaro Flip", "Samba Papageno",
a harpsichord. Some track titles: "Figaro Flip", "Samba Papageno", "Swing
A La Turca", "Hold My Hand, Giovanni"... I dunno; maybe some kinda
precusor to Mars' "John Gavanti" (well: in a like spirit, at least).
And then there's Nat Hentoff's liner notes, which say the reason Kingsley
was in Vienna, was to record a disc of Yiddish Theatre Music for the
Vanguard label. Given Kingsley's singular, warped genius for arranging, I
imagine this would be a helluva thing. Does anyone out there on the list
have a copy, or know anything else about this Kingsley character?

So what does everyone think of the Derek Bailey/Pat Metheny
collaboration? I couldn't resist picking it up the other day and, while I
haven't fully digested all 3 discs yet, I must confess that much of it
leaves me cold. It strikes that portions of the music are recorded rather
poorly (with Wertico's double-bass work, terrificly overdone anyway,
being way too up front, and Bailey himself often lost in the mix). The
shorter excerpts are generally more successful than the hour-long
improvisation, at least to my ears. But for much of the time, Metheny and
Wertico seem enthusiastic (perhaps overly so) but unable to harmonize
with Bailey's conception (and all its subtleties).
If anyone has opposing interpretations, I'd love to hear them. And I
certainly think much of the music is solid despite my reservations (hats
off to Metheny for even attempting this, I suppose; it shows that "Song
X" wasn't a total fluke). And hey Steve Smith, any insights into the
process of selection here?

i listened to the whole thing today, and my first impressions ran a bit
contrary to these (but not entirely). i felt like metheny really pushes
bailey over the top, and i found the hour long live disc (cd 1) to be
mesmerizing. metheny has a particularly nasty tone throughout, which i
found delightful. and i usually HATE metheny-- can't find anything
redeemable about that shit he's been pumping out for the past 20 years,
with (of course) the exception of the record with ornette and the solo gtr
disc (which i usually find listenable). on the quieter acoustic(-ish)
numbers metheny seems particularly lost, which surprised me-- i
thought that this would be his angle into bailey's world, but he's much
more convincing on the over the top stuff. i haven't paid enough attention to
the drumming to comment-- beyond saying there's nothing outrageous
going on, good or bad.
overall, i'd say if you like bailey's noisier stuff then check it out. if you're
more interested in bailey's introspective side, steer clear. if you're
interested in pat metheny.... buy it, say how you can't believe he could
make such garbage and then try and return it.

redeemable about that shit he's been pumping out for the past 20 years,
with (of course) the exception of the record with ornette and the solo gtr
disc (which i usually find listenable). on the quieter acoustic(-ish)
numbers metheny seems particularly lost, which surprised me-- i
thought that this would be his angle into bailey's world, but he's much
more convincing on the over the top stuff. i haven't paid enough attention to
the drumming to comment-- beyond saying there's nothing outrageous
going on, good or bad.
overall, i'd say if you like bailey's noisier stuff then check it out. if you're
more interested in bailey's introspective side, steer clear. if you're
interested in pat metheny.... buy it, say how you can't believe he could
make such garbage and then try and return it.

Subject: strange Marc Ribot sighting/Pat & Derek
I came across a copy of the soundtrack to the musical "Doonesbury" and was
suprised to see that a "Mark Ribot" plays guitar and banjo on it. I had
little desire to spin this platter (12" LP vinyl on MCA), but thought this
would be an amusing tidbit for completists and discographers.
Myself, I'm half-way through the Bailey/Metheny monster and must agree to
being dissapointed with how energy oriented it is (the first CD in
particular). I guess I just haven't been keeping up with Derek's head-I
dig him solo, with Kaiser, and with Braxton-the Arcana and Ruins CDs
haven't really tickled my brain.
Tangentially, the new Guitar Player mag has a nice Japanese noise guitar
article and mentions an upcoming Keiji Haino/Derek Bailey duo. Not my
thang, but those of you who dig the Japanese skronk should check out the
mag even if you don't strum.

13 Ghosts is a duet featuring the amazing young British reeds player Alex
Ward (previously heard on the Incus release "Ya Boo, Reel & Rumble") and an
electronics guy whose name unfortunately escapes me. Half the new disc
features Derek Bailey and half features Thurston Moore; the two guitarists
don't play together. I've heard the Bailey half and found it quite good,
and I've heard from folks I trust that the Moore half is very good as well.

Yep, they're out here too (Patrice, you can finally get your copy of East
Asian Bar Bands! :-)). Got both, but have only listened to bits of the
Bacharach tribute - very good, just wish I was familiar with the original
songs a bit more. And the Bacharach is in a single-size jewel box, as an
added bonus (hey, when you've got *tons* of CDs, any little extra space
counts!).

I haven't heard it on CD, but I've heard many of the pieces. The music was
written for choreographers, mostly, if not entirely, in the Seattle area.
Most of it's good, more like the solo things from the first couple of
Dossier discs, rather than any of his ensemble projects. It's not like
techno-dance or anything like that.
Patrice, who's closer to the label (at least geographically), probably has
more to say on the subject.

I just got it the other night (thanks Patrice!). It's almost all Horvitz,
Ed Pias plays percussion on 2 pieces, but the rest is Wayne on keys,
samples and harmonica. It reminds me the most of the his Dinner at Eight
record on Dossier, some cuts of which appeared on This New Generation. It's
a very pleasant and enjoyable record, with some great melodies, nothing
that expands the definition of modern music, but very listenable without
being trite. I think it's Wayne's best record since Miracle Mile.

No, it's a guy I haven't heard of before named Switch (real name Benjamin
Herve). Also, I would recommend their first record on Scatter (Giganti
Reptilicus Destructo Beam) over the Bailey/Moore record which is a little
disappointing given the personnel.
Anyone else go to the recently concluded Victoriaville festival? The
highlight for me was seeing Fushitsusha in a small room and then interviewing
them in their hotel room around 3 AM. The whole thing seemed like a fever
dream. Other highlights were Francois Houle, Gianni Gebbia, Phil Minton's
quartet, etc. I highly recommend going to this festival at least once; not
everything is amazing but it's all at least interesting and it's quite the
experience to be somewhere where a way to strike up casual conversations is
to discuss Evan Parker's discography.
The new Ground Zero record is amazing , by the way. It's called Consume Red
and is basically a jam around a groove provided by sampling Korean hojok
player Kim Suk Chul. Pretty great stuff.

Neither, I think. It's someone who goes by the name of "Switch" -- I just
did my homework like a good little camper and checked it out on the
European Free Improvisation homepage, which is the Net's best resource for
information on Bailey, Evan Parker, Tony Oxley and the like. Peter Stubley
is deeply wired into this scene and has information about loads of current
and even upcoming Bailey releases, with video and soundbites where
applicable (everyone should check out his Phil Minton videoclip sometime).

News of a late-breaking show. Amazing Brazilian percussionist Cyro
Baptista brings his dazzling drum troupe Beat the Donkey (formerly Teste da
Farinha) to the Knitting Factory for one show, Sunday, June 1 at 9 p.m.
Cyro previously brought this group to the Knit on a double bill with John
Zorn and Susie Ibarra, and the crowd loved it.
Baptista will have a new disc out on Avant this summer, "Villa Lobos / Vira
Loucos." He plays regularly with Chamber Masada and has been involved in
numerous other Zorn projects, as well as recordings with Laurie Anderson,
