My favorite disc by Berne is Fractured Fairytales. It's more controlled
than his recent stuff, but that is a good thing. I find his playing with
Bloodcount to be a little noodley sometimes. In general I've always
thought that Tim Berne was a much stronger composer than improviser, and
he's one of my favorite composers. The first Chaos Totale is great too. It
features some strong playing by Marc Ducret and Bobby Previte.
Bassist,Mark Dresser (one of my all-time faves) plays his buns off on this
one. By the way, I just got Invocation, Dresser's new solo CD. I like it,
but
I'm interested in some other opinions.

Upon serious consideration of this wise suggestion, as well as factoring
in the likely outcome of the latest round or GATT negotiations and the
trend in general towards global capitalism which likely will bring the
world down to the level of the US in before the 1930's (unbearably worse
of course), not to mention the results of generations of children being
trained into fanatic narcicism and being emotionally anesthetized by
commercial propaganda since infancy (resulting in lifelong infancy) now
on a global scale eroding (albeit oppressive and hierarchial) cultures
around the world and replacing them with NIke and Coca Cola worship; and
contrasting all this with the advent of independant creative artists such
as Ani DiFranco and Zorn who are tapping in to the need for human emotion
and spirit in the midst of the sterile wasteland of corporate capitlist
culture, who's art has the power to awaken dormant emotions and self
awareness (much as jazz did during and leading up to the civil rights
movement) and therefore the capability of destroying that sterile
culture, I have come to the conclusion that indeed that this just might
be exactly what you should do in order to spread Zorn's creative and
independant genes to successive generations
if we are to truly move towards socialism and a sane human society.
Good luck and godspeed (thanks to new Nike Jesus Air sneakers)

As far as I know such a film does not exist.
If I recall correctly, the CD says it is a
"soundtrack to Jeux de Dames Cruelles"
where "Jeux de Dames Cruelles" is the title
of a photo book of women spanking other
women.
Good Vibrations in San Francisco still
had it in stock last time I checked.
.....just checked their web site at

and yes, they still set it for ~$15.

Just to set the record straight, our charming
friend Deborah has been frustrated because
she can't unsubscribe from the zorn-list.
Even though I have sent her instructions on
how to extricate herself (several times), she
seems hellbent on pestering the entire zorn-list
membership rather than replying to my emails
and working with me on fixing her situation.
Luckily, she has been manually removed from
our glorious ranks with some deft file editting
by yours truly.
Apologies to everyone for having to endure
her pithy bits of intelligent expression.

Fellow Zorn enthusiasts:
I called the # listed On JoLaMaSoul's post: the #'s were either
jumbled up, or I copied the # down wrong. After some tracking down, I
found that the actual office number for the Institute of Contemporary arts
in Cambridge Mass (the site of Zorn's Masada on Nov. 13th 8:00 pm, thursday)
is (617) 927-6620. The lady I asked about tickets was quite not with it, so
I will persist in calling again soon.
A few questions: 1) I am still doing a three hour radio special on the
music of Mike Patton, and I need to obtain some of the more obscure albums
(bob Ostertag, Sepultra, etc..) Does Anyone have any availability info,
other essential albums (besides the obvious Elegy/Bungle/FNM/Tzadik solo/
stuff???
2)when I saw Dave Douglas's Tiny Bell Trio in June, he told me Masada #7 was
already recorded: Does Anyone Know a release date. 3)Sorry this is such a
repeated question, but what is a good mail-order company to get Avant/Tzadik
DIW/Japanese Import stuff? I am in desperate search of Joey Baron's
Crackshot. Sucks living in New Hampshire.
Please....I beg, even dare someone to respond.......I'd die in your gratitude

Hi there. I had two questions about john zorns work that I'm sure
someone on the list can answer.
I was listening to Spilaine earlier today and I was wondering, what might
be a good spilaine text to read to get a better understanding of the
title track of the cd?
Second, can someone give me a review of jewx de..whatever the rest of the
name of this disk is? What kind of sound does it have? Is it straight
jazz, pretty wacked out, or what?
Thanks for the information.

Henry Hill, a filmmaker, came through Pittsburgh a year or so
ago, showing films that included videos for "Batman" and "Igneous
Ejaculation" from the first Naked City album, and Zorn's version
of "Das Kleines Leutnant des Lieben Gottes" off the Hal Willner
Kurt Weill tribute, "Lost in the Stars." (I believe "Batman" was
the only one that was intended for use on MTV.) Anyway, the
advance publicity advertised "Heretic" starring Karen Finley,
but it wasn't shown; Hill said his copy was being recut.
So either it exists, or Hill is in on the joke--to tell the
truth, he seemed like a sort of serious guy who probably
wouldn't initiate the prank at least. Might help you track
this down. ("Little Lieutenant" was really cool, BTW.)

SUBSCRIBER LIST PROBLEM
The zorn-list and zorn-list-digest had a mini-crisis
last night/this morning. During some hardware upgrades
at our host xmission.com, the subscriber list got
blown away. The owner of xmission.com replaced the
subscription list from a tape backup made on
September 6, 1996.
Luckily, I had a list backup from October 16th on
my machine. I was able to hack in (and out) the
names of people that I know subscribed and unsubscribed
in between the 16th and today.
However, it is entirely possible that I missed
someone. So if someone you know used to be getting
zorn-list mail, but isn't anymore (or vice-versa)
please have them contact me (rizzi@netcom.com).
MISSING DIGEST
While getting caught up in reading the zorn-list-digest,
I noticed that I didn't receive a copy of digest #19
at either of my computer accounts. Did anyone get a
copy of #19? Fortunately, xmission.com has a copy in
the archive directory.
So, if you did not receive digest #19 please email
me and I'll send a copy right along.
Apologies for all the fubaroo,

Hi Scott,
Mark Dresser is too one of my favorites of all time. Invocation is
very Bert Turetzky influenced and I believe he gives him credit as a
pivotal influence in his musical career on the liner notes. (Mark
was also a student of his). Bert is my favorite and is the father of
contmporary bass music which gaps classical, improv and jazz into one.
As a bored classically trained, still somewhat frightened to death to
improvise bassist, music of such composers like turetzky, as well as
Joelle Leandre, Robert Black and this disc from Dresser is very
exciting and inspirational to me. Although I must admit, Invocation
falls somewhat short for me but the track, Threnody for Charles
Mingus, makes up for anything I feel this disc lacks.
Check out some Joelle Leandre if you like this album because she kicks
ass. (Highly recommend th album Urban Bass is you can find it) She
also has a jazz trio that is pretty wacked out.

Welcome to the list. To answer your question, Zorn's people have said
pretty defintively that Masada 4 will never be reissued by itself.
However, I've heard more than one person suggest that the entire Masada
series would be repackaged as a box set for Tzadik, and that 4 would be
included in that box. Again, I can't say that that's definitely the
case, and your best bet for getting a copy is to ask someone on the Zorn
List to tape it for you. It's only about 20 minutes long, BTW, so don't
pay anybody an extortionist's fee for it.
Good luck and enjoy,
