  48. because Zorn doesn't dig them. Ttherefore, I stayed away from
  49. groveling. Hope peoples panties aren't all in a bunch b/c I mentioned
  50. the Masada w/ Frisell bootleg.

  52. BTW, does anyone know what Mr. Bill's taping policy is? I taped him
  53. stealth the night before the KF/Masada gig, in Boston. I'm just
  54. wondering if he likes copies of his shows or what...

  153. Are people really having trouble finding "Five" by the Dave Douglas String
  154. Band? I ordered it through CDNow in April - it took them 3-4 weeks, but I
  155. had it by early May. It should be fairly accessible by now. For those who 
  156. dug "Parallel Worlds", it's probably an even better disc - the band has 
  157. had time to mature, and Douglas's writing continues to improve. He is a 
  158. long way from being "only" the trumpeter from Masada.

  202. I found the Golden Boat through university co-op. I'm in Virginia and
  203. most of the state schools do a co-op through university libraries.  I found
  204. this film at University of Virginia.  If you can, try going through a
  205. University library co-op because they are the only ones who purchase
  206. independant and experimental films because they have the budget (these
  207. films tend to be too costly for any store or whatever to purchase,
  208. esp. without much of an audience).  I've yet to recieve it so I can't
  209. give a review but I believe, if memory serves me correct, Jim Jarmusch
  210. is also in it (or some New York scenester of that type).  And actually
  211. I think there were one or two more zorn-scorred films at UVa but I'm
  212. not sure.

  227. purchase, an unauthorized  copy of a show on cd, vinyl, video or whatever.
  228.  At least thats the way I look at it.  That Masada show w/Frisell may have
  229. been passed around, but not sold  (I hope).

  260. It is kind of funny to read reviews about the KF Cobra record. You wonder
  261. sometimes if the reviewers are from the same world, or are really listening
  262. to the same record (or even opened it...). I am not talking about reviewers
  263. without interest for music on the edge, but on the contrary people who are
  264. always ready to take a chance with the most extreme music. Concerning COBRA
  265. on the KF label, reviews range from very bad to very good. Some think it is
  266. better than the Hat Hut one; some think that it is really bad, specially 
  267. after the Hat Hut.

  269. Everybody knows that music criticism is not an exact science, but when even
  270. respected (and supposedly) knowledgeable critics disagree to such extent,
  271. you start to wonder...

  273. Anyway, I personally have a hard time with the KF record and I am wondering
  274. if the fact that it took more than two years to be released is not related
  275. to Zorn's doubts about its value. I prefer the Hat Hut, but still think 
  276. that game pieces should be released on video (too dry on record).

  300. I was just listening to it today. It's a collection of 1 minute pieces by
  301. a mess of different people. One set is from 1996, one from 1992, and one
  302. from 86. There was (in 92?) a single CD version. I think the 2 CD version
  303. has everything from the old one. There's a bunch poets on it as well as
  304. new music. It's fun-it reminds me of a real cool out-there college radio
  305. show, where the DJ is doing a long set fading stuff in and out, playing
  306. bits of spoken word in between tunes...

  338. I think that is a good idea.  I was thinking about that when I saw Cobra on
  339. 8/2 at the Knit.  It sounded incredible, but honestly sometimes it's
  340. impossible to tell who is playing what.  I noticed this because I had an
  341. obstructed view, and couldnt see all the musicians.  The sound is all a big
  342. picture, but if I know Zeena Parkins is playing something, I'd like to *see*
  343. her play it, because I may not be able to distinguish it in the mix.  And
  344. thats another thing, it is really hard to get a good balance between the
  345. instruments in a live setting like that, sometimes it requires a good sound
  346. engineer.  12 musicians at once, that's a lot of sound.
  347. And also just to be able to see everyone watching Zorn for the next cue...
  348. and when he points at every musician consecutively and they play one fast
  349. note.. these things would be very interesting to watch on video.

  361. I'm not sure where the archives for the Zorn list are, but there will be
  362. some notes on this one among them.

  364. In short, Subsonic 1 is much more "difficult listening" than #2 or #3.  No
  365. beats or ambient elements in either the Ribot or Frith material.  For me it
  366. numbers among many discs that sound great if I'm just listening to the
  367. music and doing nothing else, but not very pleasant as a soundtrack to your
  368. life's activities.  There's the warning.
  369.  
  370. The Ribot tracks take off where the most noisy material on Shrek stops.
  371.  
  372. I haven't heard much by Frith, so I have to compare this to the old "live
  373. in Japan" box set from the early 80's.  It's in the same vein of noise
  374. making.  One of the tracks features these techniques on solo acoustic.

  494. I would tend to agree that the KF release is a little harder to handle,
  495. and the majority of that is because of sound quality (from my
  496. perspective).  There are some amazing moments on the KF CD, but the
  497. general sheen of "bootleg"-esque sound that exists is really hard to get
  498. behind.  The idea of releasing the stuff on video is exactly right, but
  499. Zorn's reticence to let his image into the world (as if he felt his sould
  500. was being captured) seems to make this unlikely.  
  501.  
  502. I really enjoyed the recent Knit show and felt that live (and with a
  503. primary "electric" line-up) the piece works much better than on CD.  The
  504. idea of a video release is great and would start to achieve that sort of
  505. audience experience, but that the recorded output just doesn't work (not
  506. even the hat hut release).

  508. Nice thing about the Knit show was seeing the Cobra vets (A. Coleman,
  509. David Shea, Chris Cochrane, Zeena) operating in a group with some talented
  510. newbies (Spooky, Wm. Parker, Susie Ibara) and following those dynamics.
  511. Nice to see Zorn conducting too.  Got a real sense of how the conductor's
  512. role was concieved.

  529. Yes, Zeena's sister.  Yes, amazing to hear some out improv techniques on
  530. accordion.  Playing with Briggan Krauss (Pigpen, Myth Science) and Kenny
  531. Wolleson (New Klezmer Trio, Junk Genius).  Sort of tending towards the
  532. Ornette end of things, but they go even farther out at a couple moments.
  533. She's still developing and will go a long way I'm sure.  Supposedly great
  534. live, but I missed her What Is Jazz? set.

  545. Andrea Parkins plays keyboards and sundry digital electronics as well as
  546. accordion, simultaneously. She leads a band that I haven't heard and don't
  547. recall who's in. She plays with Ellery Eskelin's band which is Ellery
  548. (tenor sax), Andrea and Jim Black (drums). I heard them live at In-House,
  549. David Lopato's place on Greenwich St. in NYC, and they were wonderful. And
  550. I have a Songlines CD they did called "jazz trash," which I like a lot.

  594. Uh, the term "bootleg" has nothing to do with whether money changes hands.
  595. It has to do with the legitimacy of the the product under consideration,
  596. being derived from a method of smuggling, ie, bringing something where it
  597. is not allowed.

  599. Think, for example, of bootleg liquor smuggled into the States during
  600. Prohibition. At this time it was not merely illegal to sell liquor, it was
  601. illegal to possess it, even for personal use.
  602.  
  603. The erroneous use of the term "bootleg" is quite common in situation such
  604. as the one below, in which someone wants to obscure the fact that the major
  605. moral problem with bootleg recordings is NOT economic, but respect for
  606. artistic control of how one's work is presented.
  607.  
  608. I KNOW that I'm not going to change any minds with this.  Still, all the
  609. usual talk about "I have ALL of the commercial recordings already" & "well,
  610. I just traded for it, I didn't pay for it, so it's okay" is a lot of
  611. quibbling designed to obscure some very real moral issues surrounding
  612. bootlegs.
