The other month i heard a free-improv electric guitarist from Montreal
named Rene Lussier and thought he was really good, and damn funny. He's
of the use-everything-you-can-possibly-think-of school of guitar
playing...my favorite effect was the tremolo he produced with one of those
small electric pocket-fans. Brilliant idea, i must get one...
Speaking of solo guitar montreal stuff: Tim Brady is another name which
comes to mind. He does lots of stuff with backing tapes, so depending how
strictly you define 'solo' he may or may not count. He has a few CDs i
think, one of which is called 'scenarios'. I've heard bits of it and
quite liked it. Not all solo, though...some tracks feature a soprano, and
i think some other people. He's in that 'what am i' zone between, above
and beyond jazz and the european tradition, as well...actually, he's not
very jazzy (from what little i've heard, anyway), so by process of
elimination i guess that leaves him in the 'modern composed music'
catagory, or whatever one calls it these days.

One record of solo guitar which I don't believe has been mentioned yet is
Kevin Drumm's recent CD on Perdition Plastics. It's prepared guitar, recorded
live to tape, and I guarantee you'll hear sounds you've never heard come from
a guitar before. Also, the recent Womblife by John Fahey is a superb record,
masterfully produced by the ubiquitous Jim O'Rourke.

Knitting Factory would be opening a club in Denver sometime in the not
too distant future.
The rumor is true.

It would be a godsend if they opened one in New Orleans ! I'm starving down
here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe it or not, New Orleans is NOT the most
happening spot for jazz.....even in the 20's and 30's all the budding jazz
stars moved to Chicago, L.A and NYC to make a go of
it................Sadly, i think the same holds true for the present..

Subject: i'm buying bill laswell's old records(?)
so, i was at my local record store (in downtown santa barbara) the other
day, and was surprised by all the great new stuff they had...i went up to
pay for them and was talking to the proprietor, who told me that bill
laswell had come in recently and sold a load of his old records. from what
the guy told me, laswell is actually moving out here soon, and that there
are still boxes of records left that haven't gotten to the store yet.
what i picked up already-
skeleton crew;learn to talk- it's hard to believe there are only two
people (cora&frith) making all that noise. wonderful record
metalanguage music festival 1980; the social set- forty minutes of free
improv with henry kaiser on guitar, evan parker on alto, kondo toshinori
(sp?) on trumpet, the rova saxophone quartet and someone on piano whose
name escapes me.
derek bailey&christine jaffey;stories from six windows- acoustic guitar
and voice. bailey is great (as could be expected) and jaffey does things
with her voice i was not aware humans could do.
einstruzende neubauten;strategies against architecture-collection of old
stuff from the original masters of real industrial music, not that disco
industrial crap.
test dept.- another record of very good very percussive industrial music.
all the records are in mint condition.
needless to say, i'll be going back soon...which reminds me, i saw the
power tools lp, but didn't pick it up. could anyone tell me how it
compares (if it is possible to do so) with the stuff frisell's done
w/baron & driscoll? also, there was a duo album with frisell and vernon
reid. anyone heard this?
sorry for the incredibly long message. i was a bit excited (good records
are hard to find in santa barbara).

Here are some discs I have for exchange, mail me with any offers. The
usual parameters apply- Avant/Tzadik stuff always welcome together with
all related areas of improv, rock experimentalists, weird modern
composition etc etc
Faust Concerts vol2. Table of the Elements copy in lovely cardboard
sleeve, numbered I think. CD
Omodie Hatoba, Kinsei. Japanese mayhem feat some members of Boredoms but
a lot less chaotic. Some nice tunes a lot of dithering about in
different styles inc Krautrock, reggae and pop. CD
The Boredoms, Pop Tatari. A real racket. CD
MX80, I've Seen Enough. Fairly recent disc from seminal US guitar
abusers. CD
Introduction to American Clave. Double CD compilation of odd US label,
feat the likes of Astor Piazolla, Kip Hanrahan, DNA and others. Slipcase
and booklet inc.
More Encores, Christian Marclay. Fairly rare 10 inch disc of record
abuse. Pretty cool. Appropriate offers for this please.
Wayne Horvitz, This New Generation. Not really your thing but this is
sort of electronic jazz played mostly by Horvitz though he's joined by a
band on one track inc Bill Frisell. LP.
John Adams, Fearful Symmetries/The Wound Dresser. Nonsuch CD.

Hello All,
I am not sure how welcome the subject of Medeski Martin and Wood is
recived here, but I head a great album by them called Farmer's Reserve. It
is an impressive departure from the groove orientated stuff they have been
doing as of late.
For those who are not familiar, Medeski Martin and Wood flee to a
shack out in Hawaii to write and record music. Farmer's Reserve is a
recording of them playing outside of the "song" realm they usually play in.
Very textural, innovative use of instruments, and a free improv structure,
if you want to call it structure.
Any cello music recomendations?

Jason,
As a cellist myself, someone I recommend fully would be Joan
Jeanrenaud from the Kronos Quartet. She is unbelievable, as is the entire
Quartet... composed of Joan, two violinists and a violist. Some really
intense strings... beautiful and complicated... I would suggest
Ghost Opera [Tan Dun] with Wu Man on pipa or Pieces of Africa (a very
famous CD), as well as Short Stories which features Kronos play music
composed by Elliott Sharp, John Oswald, John Zorn, Henry Cow(ell), Sofia
Gubaidulina and many others... All The Rage (with Bob Ostertag) is cool
too. Good luck finding cello music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS. DEFINITELY check out Erik Friedlander's web site-- lots of great
stuff. He is super.

Ken Vandermark is at the forefront of Chicago's music scene. Core member of
The NRG Ensemble. Plays in many ensembles. Forte is free blowing a la Ayler,
Gayle, Brotzmann.

I highly recommend the Ken Buttler-CD on Tzadik.
Buttler plays hybrid-instruments made of axes, golf-clubs,
hammers, hockey-sticks,... with strings on it, and a small contact-microphone.
(pictures of the weird instruments used on each track are included
in the booklet).
I saw Butler (with Zorn as guest ) on the Tzadik-night at the
knitting-factory this summer, and was amazed. At the end of the gig
Butler held a big knife on his neck and played it with a bow like a violin,
at this moment it looked as if even Zorn was surprised.
I feared that this music wouldn't work on CD, loosing all this visual tricks
and jokes, that made the gig so amusing.
But the Cd is very consistent, and has a very dark, exotic,
eastern-europe atmosphere (largely due to Matt Darriau who plays
bulgarian bagpipes, flutes and clarinets and the dumbec/tapan -player ).
Most tracks have a slow, hypnotic groove , typical of Balcan-music and
both Dariau and Buttler are improvising (I guess) on top of it.
(there are also some more rock/noise oriented compositions.)
Butler plays his instruments like guitars, violins, cellos, ouds or sitars,
maybe it will be hard to believe he actually played on his weird instruments.

This should be interesting, because Mats Gustaffson's forte is small
sounds, close miking, like John Butcher. He's a member of the trio
Gush with prepared pianist Sten Sendall (sp?), who has a new album
with Phil Wachsmann called Gushwachs, which is electroacoustic
improvisations sounding most like Stockhausen's intuitive recordings
from the 60s.
