  44. The other month i heard a free-improv electric guitarist from Montreal
  45. named Rene Lussier and thought he was really good, and damn funny.  He's
  46. of the use-everything-you-can-possibly-think-of school of guitar
  47. playing...my favorite effect was the tremolo he produced with one of those
  48. small electric pocket-fans.  Brilliant idea, i must get one...
  49.  
  50. Speaking of solo guitar montreal stuff: Tim Brady is another name which
  51. comes to mind.  He does lots of stuff with backing tapes, so depending how
  52. strictly you define 'solo' he may or may not count.  He has a few CDs i
  53. think, one of which is called 'scenarios'.  I've heard bits of it and
  54. quite liked it.  Not all solo, though...some tracks feature a soprano, and
  55. i think some other people.  He's in that 'what am i' zone between, above
  56. and beyond jazz and the european tradition, as well...actually, he's not
  57. very jazzy (from what little i've heard, anyway), so by process of
  58. elimination i guess that leaves him in the 'modern composed music'
  59. catagory, or whatever one calls it these days.

  126. One record of solo guitar which I don't believe has been mentioned yet is
  127. Kevin Drumm's recent CD on Perdition Plastics. It's prepared guitar, recorded
  128. live to tape, and I guarantee you'll hear sounds you've never heard come from
  129. a guitar before. Also, the recent Womblife by John Fahey is a superb record,
  130. masterfully produced by the ubiquitous Jim O'Rourke.

  191. It would be a godsend if they opened one in New Orleans ! I'm starving down
  192. here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe it or not, New Orleans is NOT the most
  193. happening spot for jazz.....even in the 20's and 30's all the budding jazz
  194. stars moved to Chicago, L.A and NYC to make a go of
  195. it................Sadly, i think the same holds true for the present..

  232. so, i was at my local record store (in downtown santa barbara) the other
  233. day, and was surprised by all the great new stuff they had...i went up to
  234. pay for them and was talking to the proprietor, who told me that bill
  235. laswell had come in recently and sold a load of his old records. from what
  236. the guy told me, laswell is actually moving out here soon, and that there
  237. are  still boxes of records left that haven't gotten to the store yet.
  238. what i picked up already- 
  239. skeleton crew;learn to talk- it's hard to believe there are only two
  240. people (cora&frith) making all that noise. wonderful record
  241. metalanguage music festival 1980; the social set- forty minutes of free
  242. improv with henry kaiser on guitar, evan parker on alto, kondo toshinori
  243. (sp?) on trumpet, the rova saxophone quartet and someone on piano whose
  244. name escapes me.
  245. derek bailey&christine jaffey;stories from six windows- acoustic guitar
  246. and voice. bailey is great (as could be expected) and jaffey does things
  247. with her voice i was not aware humans could do.
  248. einstruzende neubauten;strategies against architecture-collection of old
  249. stuff from the original masters of real industrial music, not that disco
  250. industrial crap.
  251. test dept.- another record of very good very percussive industrial music.
  252. all the records are in mint condition.
  253. needless to say, i'll be going back soon...which reminds me, i saw the
  254. power tools lp, but didn't pick it up. could anyone tell me how it
  255. compares (if it is possible to do so) with the stuff frisell's  done
  256. w/baron & driscoll? also, there was a duo album with frisell and vernon
  257. reid. anyone heard this?

  259. are hard to find in santa barbara).

  303. a new studio outside of NYC, it seems pretty unlikely that he is going to

  452.     I am not sure how welcome the subject of Medeski Martin and Wood is
  453. recived here, but I head a great album by them called Farmer's Reserve. It
  454. is an impressive departure from the groove orientated stuff they have been
  455. doing as of late.
  456.     For those who are not familiar, Medeski Martin and Wood flee to a
  457. shack out in Hawaii to write and record music. Farmer's Reserve is a
  458. recording of them playing outside of the "song" realm they usually play in.
  459. Very textural, innovative use of instruments, and a free improv structure,
  460. if you want to call it structure.

  531.     As a cellist myself, someone I recommend fully would be Joan
  532. Jeanrenaud from the Kronos Quartet.  She is unbelievable, as is the entire
  533. Quartet... composed of Joan, two violinists and a violist.  Some really
  534. intense strings... beautiful and complicated... I would suggest
  535. Ghost Opera [Tan Dun] with Wu Man on pipa or Pieces of Africa (a very
  536. famous CD), as well as Short Stories which features Kronos play music
  537. composed by Elliott Sharp, John Oswald, John Zorn, Henry Cow(ell), Sofia
  538. Gubaidulina and many others... All The Rage (with Bob Ostertag) is cool
  539. too.  Good luck finding cello music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  631. I highly recommend the Ken Buttler-CD on Tzadik.
  632. Buttler plays hybrid-instruments made of axes, golf-clubs,
  633. hammers, hockey-sticks,... with strings on it, and a small contact-microphone.
  634. (pictures of the weird instruments used on each track are included 
  635. in the booklet).
  636. I saw Butler (with Zorn as guest ) on the Tzadik-night at the

  638. Butler held a big knife on his neck and played it with a bow like a violin,
  639. at this moment it looked as if even Zorn was surprised.
  640. I feared that this music wouldn't work on CD, loosing all this visual tricks 
  641. and jokes, that made the gig so amusing.
  642. But the Cd is very consistent, and has a very dark, exotic, 
  643. eastern-europe atmosphere (largely due to Matt Darriau who plays 
  644. bulgarian bagpipes, flutes and clarinets and the dumbec/tapan -player ).
  645. Most tracks have a slow, hypnotic groove , typical of Balcan-music and 
  646. both Dariau and Buttler are improvising (I guess) on top of it.
  647. (there are also some more rock/noise oriented compositions.)
  648. Butler plays his instruments like guitars,violins,cellos,ouds or sitars,
  649. maybe it will be hard to believe he actually played on his weird instruments.

  674. This should be interesting, because Mats Gustaffson's forte is small
  675. sounds, close miking, like John Butcher.  He's a member of the trio
  676. Gush with prepared pianist Sten Sendall (sp?), who has a new album
  677. with Phil Wachsmann called Gushwachs, which is electroacoustic
  678. improvisations sounding most like Stockhausen's intuitive recordings
  679. from the 60s.
