Date: 02 Apr 1997 15:30:11 +1000
I was listening to "One Second" recently, and noticed that the 'Bassoon' at
the end of "Call it Love" is playing the same melody that appears in
"L'Hotel". I was wondering if anyone else has noticed other re-uses of
material in Yello. (The different versions of "The Race", "Tied Up", "How
How" and "Tremendous Pain" don't count!) I've already noticed that the
'popping' sounds of "Moon Dog" were used at the beginning of "Suite 909",
and other people have commented on how "Resistor" seems to be a remix of
practically every Yello song in existence!
Incidentally, another re-use of a song appeared on Carlos Peron's
"TranceTrueMental". The song "Tendresse Bleue" uses the same bassline as
"Blue Green" (which Carlos also co-wrote). Chico Hablas plays a different
guitar solo, and some whispered French vocals have been added.

Date: 04 Apr 1997 01:00:29 -0500 (EST)
Hello
Today I went to my local record store to pick up the to the sea 12" that
they called me about. Well figuring that it was the regular German vinyl. It
ended up being this Italian import that it totally different from the German
CDs. It has starting from the side a , the bzed mix which is longer than the
original, and second track is a Italian house nrg remix, but then on the
other side it has a Aquatic mix and its by Boris. Guys this mix is so
incredible there are no words to describe it, It is of the same quality as
the Rhythm-essential mix very soft and flowing kind of jazzy in a way and now
just to top it off besides the incredible music that I was hearing there
comes Dieters vocals this just blew me away this is a must to have!! and the
second mix on that side is the exact album vers. accept no sea or seagulls
sounds in the beginning.
I'm hoping this is the mixes that are going to be on the UK versions. I
want this mix on CD!
stunned by the beauty of the music.....Julian

I was able to get a 2nd copy of the disc. I don't mean to be a greedy,
free market bastard about this... However, since the value is more-or-less
unknown, I've decided an auction would be best. If you would like to make
an offer, please email. I'll contact those interested every 2-3 days or
so.
Again, this is a promotional run of 500 copies, signed by Dieter and
Boris, and hand-numbered. It contains a different mix of "Do It" (not on
any singles that I know of...DJ pack??) plus brief excerpts of other
tracks from Zebra -- same versions far as I can tell, just excerpts.
I will consider trades for other Yello oddities, such as On Track, the
very 1st single, etc.

Not very essential; just a little supplement to the discussion about that

Date: 09 Apr 1997 21:15:01 +0600
PU reached to Siberia both in legal (approx. $20) and pirate (approx.$5)
copies per CD about a month ago. Some people do enjoy, some do
complain about Boris leaving his most original, great sounds and
trending to the worse tradition of the Neuer Deutsch rave (maybe a
consequence "Hands on Yello"?). The other thing to be probably
regretted is a great similarity to either J.-M.Jarre's and
Enigma's style. Yet the YELLO music is recogniseable and _beautiful_, especially the 1st part of the album (Solar Driftwood to Monolith).
"To The Sea" seems to be a rather random add-on to the whole album.
Still the album is complete and uniform, in which we can compare only with "One Second".

Hi !
Until May 97 Yello will release the On Track single.
It will contain also a new mix made by Doug Laurent.
He is a German Techno DJ and remixer. Laurent made
the planet trax "yello dubmarine" and the
aqualtite mix on the German (and Italian) 12" of
"To The Sea" and also Doug Laurent's
first and second journey on the "On Track" promo box.
The Aqualite and the Journeys are my personal favorite
remixes.
But this mix for the upcoming On Track should be complete new
version....
I am not sure if they are making only a CD single or
also a 12" vinyl.
So we have to wait again for the answers

Thanks for the info George, about the forthcoming
single. It seems that nowdays, DJ techno remixers
have taken over the single scene more and more.
Do you remember back in the 80s when the artists
themselves made the remixes? (Well, most of the
remixes). It still sounded like the original artist!
The official Yello site should have info about any
forthcoming releases, but since you didn't mention
that site, I guess the info isn't there (I'm too lazy to
check that site very often, I fear that regular updates
will be forgotten. I hope I'm wrong.)

Wow, do I ever! That was the "golden age" of remixes for me, because for
every one of my favorite songs, an extended version with new bells and
whistles could be found. But eventually everything started to sound the
same to me...the "remixes" sounded a little bit like the originals, but
they all had the same "disco"-type beat. And lately, just about any remix
I buy has virtually NO resemblance to the original! (I made the mistake of
buying "Trancewerk Express" once, and now I'm just using it as a drink
coaster.)
Remixes of Yello songs vary for me...some are really faithful to the
original, like Rubberbandman, but those Tremendous Pain ones were really a
turn-off for me. (As a side note, I noticed that the "stuttering robot"
sound from the Suite 904 Alternative Vocal mix shows up in Resistor. Then
again, what *doesn't* show up in Resistor??) The Jungle Bill mixes were a
nice surprise, though...love hearing the funky brass alongside that
severely electronic beat!

"Trancewerk Express" once, and now I'm just using it as a drink

This is a great album to me its very inventive and its not suppose to sound
like kraftwerk(plus its got the great mix of Richard Kirk on it). Its a
tribute so its sounds like the artists them self's, and I also highly
recommend the "Trance Mode Express" which is the same thing except its a
tribute to Depeche M. But then you might not like it if you dont like the
other one. I also like the tribute to Krafwerk "Kraftweldt" this album is
long and very inventive with having that Kraft. flavor but much like LFO very
raw and lots of bass. Speaking of LFO I also strongly recommend the latest
LFO album too it hasn't been in the states much but is extremely good.
but enough about that lets talk about YELLO! JULIAN

In the beginning of the song "Suite 904-single version, 3:54 there is a man
saying "Zero minus one hour and 15 min. and holding". Does anybody know
where this sample comes from ?
I dont think it┤s a Yello sample because I've got a record from 93 with a

Greatfull for any help.

my transcription of this is "zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes and
holding"
this was in the lyrics posted some while back (december 1994), however i'm not
sure of the legal implication of me reposting the lyrics or otherwise making

Yes, Yes, Yesterday I saw the new "On Track" video on MTV Europe.
Yello took many scenes from the P.U. Show in Munich.
You see the P.U. head, some kitchentools and (you got it) Boris and
Dieters heads in a typical race-bostich-pinball-cha-cha type of video.
The song itself is the new "On Track" remix by Doug Laurent.
It sonds like any other german-commerce-techno remix
Sorry, but I do not like this version.
Doug did better on the first and the second journey remix of "On Track".
So I guess the song will not make it to the German Top 100.
Bad news also for Pocket Universe it is on place 61 in the German album
charts. And "To The Sea" is "lost again" from the single charts ...

I feel sorry for Yello. "To The Sea" third-party-remix was most
probably included to PU because it is on the video and they expected
it will be a hit song. But it is not. Now they did loose money by

I listened to what has to be the same sample in the beginning of "Night
Train" (track 3) from Zebra, and I think it's definetly
"Zero minus one hour and fifteen minutes - and holding."
Like a countdown that is holding on the mentioned time. Doesn't sound like
any Yello sample, though, more like a sample from a real, maybe a famous,
countdown?
Dunno really. Just came across the sample a few minutes after reading this
mail thread. Can someone confirm this is the same sample as the one in
"Suite 904 - single version"?

This sounds very familiar to what would be known as a NASA countdown. If
that's the case it would use "Counting" where CALLING is.
. It seems to be a matter of utilizing a catch phrase that implies space
travel-or an attempt at it. Much like use of words like "contact", "Roger",
or "Houston-we have a problem" would.

Hi, my names is James Overton and I came across Yello on the web a few years
ago and there wasn't much around, until I recently researched for Yello. I
know Yello is popular (in Europe that is), but Australia kind of ignores
them, except for a few hits like Oh Yeah and Vicious Games (is that it?). I
think New Zealand actually had The Race go to number 1. Is that right? Zebra
had NO airplay that I know of and it's been a long wait for the new album.
Though I still haven't got hold of a copy. I was lucky enough to start
collecting Yello when I came across a neat Sydney shop that had heaps of the
'12s from Flag. I didn't realise until I joined the list that Yello still do
several versions of their songs. Favourite albums: Flag and One Second. Fav
songs: 3rd of June and The Race. Other bands I like are Art of Noise,
Associates, ABC & Severed Heads (if anyone's interested).
Any Australians know of shops that still stock Essential Yello Video?

I wish I knew what city you are in.
I got my copies of Essential Yello video and The Yello Video Show from Red
Eye Records in Sydney. I ordered Essential about two years ago (I think),
and it cost forty-something Australian dollars :( (but it was worth it :)
). I tried ordering the video show, but they couldn't get it... and then a
few months later it turned up on their shelves. (Red Eye is also the place

Of course if you live in Perth (either of them), this information will be

YELLO-VIDEO SHOW
Hi Yello fan, I am excepting bids on one(1) origanal VHS (PAL-formated
European) copy of YELLO-LIVE AT THE ROXY NY Dec.83 (aka THE YELLO VIDEO
SHOW) The video includes 13 tracks aprx 42 minutes of Yello live &
Yello's old and new videos (New up till 1991 that is). It contains RARE
footage from Yello's only ever live performance. It is a NEW in the box
origanal video tape. NOT A COPY. I did try to play it ONE time but it is
not compatible with the USA video system.(That's why I'm selling it.) It
is from the UK.They use the PAL TV system (50Mhz 220volt). If you play
the tape on a US machine it playes the audio too fast & poor video.
There are video copy services that can convert the tape to the USA
standard NTSC system. The recording label is PolyGram Video #083 336-3
Hi-Fi Stereo. It was copywrited in 1991.
The cutoff date is May 1st 1997 for all bids. The highest cash bid gets
the tape. The starting bid is $25.00 plus shipping. Send your bids care

One is from the Night Train of Zebra and second is from the Suite 904
CD single (beginning of the single version).
They are direct copies off the CD. The .cda format is headerless
44100 Hz, stereo (left, right, left,...), and 16 bit (in standard

with any civilized playing or converter program (MPEG audio program
I have, is able to read .cda directly).

Hi!
About rumours of a Yello book:
After a suggestion from one of you (thanks!)
I tried to reverse some of the later parts of
the email address and email that guy again
and ask, but it was returned again.
Did any one living in Germany try to phone
Mercury an ask?
Anyway, I doubt the whole thing because:
* The email address of the person won't work
* The first part of the email address is very
complicated, why would anyone chose "sbs4ttl"
as a user name???
* Why would Mercury have to approve the book?
* My contact person in Zurich would have told me,
when I asked for an interview with Yello, that there
was already a book planned. This person (who works
with/for Boris) would have known - he knows everything!
* How would/could anyone write a biography about Yello
without *interviewing* them *extensively*? This has never
been done, otherwise I would have been told.
About On Track on CDM:
Has it been released yet???

Subject: (yello) mp3 Yello tracks
Date: 24 Apr 1997 13:13:01 +0100
Hi again,
I think I gave you too many bad news last time -
So there comes the good one:
I created some MP3 files containing rare Yello tracks.
You can find it on my Planet G homepage (URL below)
=46or all of you, who do not know who or what MP3 is:
MP3 is a new compression standard that allows high quality stereo sound
output (almost CD quality).
You do not need a MPEG board or any other hardware extention exept your
soundcard.
Depending on the quality of the card you can get close to 16bit stereo outpu=
t.
Another advantage is the small size of the MP3 files. (One minute high
quality stereo needs 1MB)
What you really need to play MP3 on your PC or Mac is a software
application that encodes the files.
I added some links for shareware MP3 players. I am sure that there exist
better stuff.
After you have installed an application you can start downloading the mp3 fi=
les:
Some browsers will load the selected file as a text file into the
browser-window.
Just adapt the general settings of your brower that he recognises the
suffix .mp3 correctly.
(f.e. Netscape: Helpers - application/mp3 - save to disk)
=46or questions or new ideas please contact me !!!
You will find two complete (!) Yello tracks:
1.DO IT (new work version) 3:27 min
2.THE RACE (rockamerica radio mix) 3:39 min
...and three excerpts:
3. DESIRE V2 (Oliver Lieb's Hands On Yello) 4:00 min
4. ON TRACK (Topkapis Mix) 2:20 min - 2.3MB
5. XS (first ever version) 3:30 min
Hope you will enjoy it.
(As a matter of coyright protection you should delete the files after
hearing them and buy the original (if you can get them))

i very much suspect it's because boris and dieter wish you to listen to the
tracks in that order!!! i have some albums by other artists that have a single
track on the cd, yet several titles for the parts of the music!
on this subject, the new mix in one go... if you have it on vinyl, if you
listen _very_ carefully at the end and beginning of each side of the LP, you
can hear the start or end of the next track in the mix.
therefore i feel that the same is true of the new mix in one go, that it is
meant to be heard in that order. they as artistes would have decided the
actual running order, who am i to argue?

I'm not able to play the track.mp3 which is only file I have downloaded
so far. I'm using mpg123 and maplay3 in Linux. Has somebody else Linux
user the same problem? Lynx downloaded the files as text/plain which
should not make any changes to files.
What mpeg encoder you are using Georg? Do you have a Mac? In which
machine you keep those web-files? Perhaps you have made some transfer
error and not me?
I looked to Fraunhofer/OPTICOM shareware encoder which is the second of
the two layer 3 encoders for Linux. The price is 400 DM (perhaps $300)!!!!!!
I use MPEG's examplecode instead. It is free and contains the source code;
compiled in Linux, SunOs, and Mac -- at least.

Well, I've been listening to _Pocket Universe_ pretty much constantly
for the last 4-1/2 weeks, and I think it is Yello's best work since
_Stella_.
Despite what some have said about the album, I think Yello have finally
gone back to their roots in composing music that evokes mood and
transforms the listener to another world; listening to _P.U._ is like
listening to the future of music, which is what got me into Yello in the
first place. I am glad they have finally moved away from the "dance"
music and returned to the composition that Boris is known for and the
collaboration that makes Yello such a frontier group.
I do think the one oddball track on the album is "Resistor." It doesn't
fit in with the rest of the album and really is "Boris remixes his
favorite Yello samples." It just feels like it belonged on Zebra, and
not on this collection. Contrary to what someone said about there being
no "real songs", I strongly disagree. There are very distinct songs,
just blended together into a concept album approach, much like Jetro
Tull's _Thick as a Brick_.
As to why I think this album is more Yello than the last three, with
simply four words, they can communicate more than any other
band/musician I know. "Magnetic, energetic, and beautiful." Add to
that all of the magic of Boris' compostition, and you really don't need
anything more. There is beauty in simplicity.
I'm happy to see that Yello has returned to their roots. I'm thankful
that the Yello I fell in love with is back!

Found this on a co-workers calendar that gives a wacky quote for each day:
"The only luxury is freedom, freedom of the mind. They can chop off my head
and take everything else as long as they leave me that."

rock group Yello

Thought that this may be interesting...
