  136. on MCM (french music channel) there are some days ago to talk about
  137. their work in general and to Pocket...

  139. Between some clips (To The Sea, Jingle Bells, Rubberbandman and How
  140. How), Dieter confessed that his idea to work with Carl COX came
  141. because he likes what he was doing in his work. They are old friends
  142. and it was sure that they had to work together a day !

  194. I've made my own *Pocket Voyager* (Gismo) - the little creature on
  195. the booklet of POCKET UNIVERSE ! For those who want, here are my
  196. recommendations to make it in the best conditions - and they are
  197. F R E E  !=B0)
  198.  
  199. You'll see... By connectic, and authentic and... bEaU<tI<fUl, you
  200. will success !!!
  201.  
  202. You need (a lot of patience and...) about 15$ :
  203.  
  204. - 1 black electronic socket (*1)
  205. - 2 blue electronic sockets (*1)
  206. - 2 yellow electronic sockets (*1)
  207. - white plasticine (*2)
  208. - 2 resistors (take your booklet and ask if they have those on it in
  209.   your electronic store - it means that brown is old!)
  210. - 1 set of POKER dices
  211. - 1 metal tube (diam. 2mm) about 45cm
  212. - 1 round wood tube (diam. 15mm)
  213.  
  214. (*1) it's called like this in France !!!
  215.  
  216. (*2) I think that the author of this work doesn't used a dryable
  217.      dough ! But I recommande you to buy one if you want to keep
  218.      it ! After tons of plasticines tried, I can tell you that a
  219.      good air-hardening clay (like OMYA COLOR - Plastiroc) is the
  220.      best way to make a perfect work.

  223. PREPARATION:
  224. -----------
  225.  
  226. 1> Cut a piece of wood tube about 20cm. Make a point of 2,5cm with
  227.    a cutter to an extremity and paint in blue. Let dry.
  228.  
  229. 2> Make 18 pieces (about 2,5cm) of metal tube with a saw.
  230.  
  231. 3> Cut (very badly) the 12 angles of 2 dices with a knife.
  232.  
  233. 4> Unscrew (a bit) nuts of each sockets to place them like on the
  234.    picture and then block them with a point of *super glue* that you
  235.    put under each nuts.
  236.  
  237. 5> Bend brooches of elements to make a *L* like indicate following:
  238.

  242.         -   ATTENTION !!! ELEMENTS HAVEN'T THE SAME SIZE  -

  244. =2E..if you can : solder the points of elements to make it more robust !

  256.    place eyes.

  258. 2> Place dices without to forget to put a right clubs (at left) and
  259.    another turned (at right) >>> BOOKLET

  261. 3> Place the two elements in the middle (brown at left and green at
  262.    right) and hide metal brooches with some clay and water.
  263.  
  264. 4> Place the 5 sockets like following :
  265.  
  266.          - BLACK in the middle, BLUES near and YELLOWS next -
  267.                  ...well, like on the picture what!?
  268.  
  269. 5> For metal hairs... BE CARE-FUL !!!
  270.  
  271.    There are only TWO ways to drive them in (oblicle) and... THAT'S
  272.    ALL !!! If you want to do it like on the model (like me), Do It -
  273.    if not, drive them in like you want (you're free) ! Begin to drive
  274.    tubes by the middle, in front.
  275.  
  276. 6> Drive the blue tube piece in the head and let dry now.
  277.  
  278. > Keep 2 dices leaving, you can make him a girl-friend with 2 leds <

  281. I haven't done the original box, but it looks like a floppy disk box
  282. painted with a special ink that you will found in a toy store - the
  283. small candle on left (and maybe right!) side could be a transfert !

  715. ago and like the version of "On the Run" on there better than the one on
  716. Baby.  It sounds more organized or something, and "cleaner" if you know
  717. what I mean!  My humble opinion, of course...

  1107. because of a hacker's work: he installed
  1108. a so called "eggdrops" program (12 Mb!!)
  1109. and my Internet provider (Algonet) told me
  1110. to take it away. I did so, and also updated all
  1111. of my discographies in case he did something
  1112. to them too. Then a problem occured: after I had
  1113. deleted my discogs, I was not able to transfer
  1114. any new!!! It said "disc quota exceeded", probably
  1115. an automatic message that Algonet will not be
  1116. able to fix until Monday, earliest! (Yes, they all
  1117. went on holiday for the rest of the week!!)

  1186. weeks ago.  This was through EAR/Rational (ear@xmission.com), and I assume
  1187. he obtained it through a European distributor.  I'd expect he could get
  1188. more, given enough time (he says he does not deal with this source often).
  1189. But the CD ought to be much easier to find as a UK import, once it is
  1190. released.  Still it rather odd how the single was so easy to find and the
  1191. album is not.

  1231. Thanks to a tip from Jonas Warstad (and I thank you indeed) I was able to 
  1232. get my hands on a copy of Billy MacKenzies Outernational (you know, the one 
  1233. on which Boris Blank produced four tracks and co wrote one) and Carlos 
  1234. Perons album Gold For Iron. They were not bad at all.
  1235. The album with Carlos Peron was quite different from the only album I have 
  1236. with him, Impersonator II, and compared to that Gold For Iron sounded a bit 
  1237. more Yello. Here are my favs.
  1238. Motorman: It's hard not to think of The Race.
  1239. Afro Infernal: A sort of the end of You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess.
  1240. We-U-Wee-Ah! (D.W.E.i.i.G): Green Blue goes lambada.
  1241. Espace Ouvert. I'm a succer for those movielike mood "songs"
  1242. Another thing that really pleased me was that Chico Hablas played the 
  1243. guitarr on the CD, very much in the style that he plays on the Yello albums.
  1244. Outernational was not bad at all. It was interesting to hear Billy solo 
  1245. since I've never heard him or his band before. And of course the four tracks 
  1246. that Boris was a part of. Favs are, so far:
  1247. Baby: Co written and produced by Boris.
  1248. What Made Me Turn On The Lights: Produced by Boris
  1249. Feels Like The Richtergroove.
  1250. In my opinion Billy sings in a little bit different way than on the Yello 
  1251. albums.

  1253. Well, thats just my opinion about the two albums and if anyone has another 
  1254. one or whant to add a new dimension to my humble opinions, please do.

  1400. Actually no. What he is playing is a Tambura (also known as a Tanpoora, 
  1401. Tanpura). For those who are interested the Tambura is a small (compared to 
  1402. the sitar) long-necked lute that has 4 to 6 strings. The timbre reminds you 
  1403. of a sitar, but the instrument is only used to give reference to the melodic 
  1404. course of the raga by a constant bordun (I hope that's the correct word for 
  1405. it) in the keynote, fifth (or fourth) and octave.
  1406. The Sitar is much bigger and has 6 to 7 melody strings and 8 to 11 resonance 
  1407. strings and has two resonance boxes. One in each end.
  1408. The Flamenco Guitar is played by Agostine de la Fuente.

  1410. By the way. Are there not really any russians on the list that could help us 
  1411. ignorant (non russian speaking that is) with a translation of monolith (or

  1453. Dieter Meier, 50-somthing and every inch the dapper Swiss bourgeois
  1454. gentilhomme dismisses his English huntng dog Katie from the
  1455. sumptuously appointed living-room of his magnificent villa set back
  1456. into the hills overlooking Zurich.

  1458. ln the adjoining room two of his daughters the eldest of whom is a
  1459. keen showjumper are playing. He pours me coffee from a silver set and
  1460. enlarges in his eloquent if not always orthodox English on his
  1461. enthusiasm for the current dance scene.  "If I had the time then I
  1462. would live in clubs" he declares his eyes bulging wistfully "In a club
  1463. everyone is a star for one night. People seem to escape in a very
  1464. iconic way from the normal rational behaviour that they usually have
  1465. to hide behind. Its a totally new quality of dance that has come with
  1466. this music in the Nineties. Before it was still pretty formalised even
  1467. in discos when people danced to pop songs. Now people are discovering
  1468. themselves by moving to these rhythms there is this real Shamanistic
  1469. quality to it "

  1471. My minds eye cant help but picture Dieter down the Ministry Of Sound
  1472. dressed in a cravat and Saville Row socks casting an approving eye
  1473. over the sea of scraggy sweaty punters dancing around him.
  1474.  
  1475. "There was a time about 10 years ago", continues Dieter "when a Iot of
  1476. journalists enjoyed our music for its seriousness and would ask us
  1477. Dont you think it is demeaning that your music is played in dance
  1478. nightclubs? Dance music was considered the cheapest of musical forms
  1479. and it was assumed that any serious musician would be ashamed to have
  1480. their music played at a disco They thought wed be angry at this but of
  1481. course we werent The first music on this planet wasdance musicand
  1482. thelast music on this planet will be dance music It was only when rock
  1483. music became the sixth category of bourgeois art that dance music was
  1484. dismissed as not serious enough."

  1486. YELLO HAVE HAD A PRETTY QUIET TIME OF IT SO FAR THIS DECADE but in
  1487. 1997 they have come full circle since their inception way back in 1979
  1488. Their new album Pocket Universe flings song structures tothe wind and
  1489. embarks on linear adventures in space which are as state-of-the-art as
  1490. anything youll hear this year The younger readers among you may never
  1491. have come across them before. You might think the bushy-moustached
  1492. eccentric who swims about fully-clothed in the video oftheir new
  1493. single "To The Sea" is some sort of wacky Euro follow-on to Scatman
  1494. John but there's a great deal more to Yello than that.
  1495.  
  1496. Take Dieter Meier their vocal half He comes from a wealthy Swiss
  1497. family his father having built up his fortune from nothing While his
  1498. brother took care ofthe family business Dieter embarked on a career in
  1499. keeping with the traditions of Zurich his birthplace and home to the
  1500. outrageous avant-garde Dada art movement which flourished there during
  1501. the First World War Combining anarchy with Dandyism he was at one time
  1502. or other (and on occasion simultaneously) a professional gambler
  1503. golfer and performance artist He once paid passers-by in the street a
  1504. dollar each forthewords yes and "no" In spite of his monied relatives
  1505. and extravagant eccentricities Dieter struggled for a while and even
  1506. as he approached 30 was still performing to a handful of people at
  1507. arthouse/outhouse gigs and lugging his own equipment about Then he met
  1508. Boris Blank whose physical appearance ofa comical Latino pimpin an old
  1509. Pink Panther movie belies the actuality of his being a studio hermit
  1510. and techno freak
  1511.  
  1512. "He was a kid who was absolutely music-driven " recalls Dieter
  1513. "For Boris to create sounds was more than a hobby it was as
  1514. important to him as breathing He d drive a truck all day then run
  1515. home to his kitchen and create a masterpiece But I didn't want Boris
  1516. to join the typical syndrome of Swiss musicians who work all week
  1517. then go bananas atthe weekends in their cellars who rehearse and
  1518. rehearse but never perform
  1519.  
  1520. I had a sologig which I turned into the first Yello gig People were
  1521. surprised by it but they didnt throw cans at us ln fact it was a
  1522. success because it was something new something different It was like
  1523. giving birth After the gig we allgot very drunk including our driver
  1524. who was arrested the same night This was to be the flrst ofonly four
  1525. concerts in 18 years Boris BIank is chronically shy of live
  1526. performance The shows they did do however were memorable by accident
  1527. as well as design
  1528.  
  1529. We did a show in the Eighties at the Camden Palace " recalls Bons
  1530. lateras we purr about the streets of Zurich in his Bentley "Wewere
  1531. premiering a new album We went onstage and did a playback with
  1532. Dietersinging Then suddenly there was a fuck-up and thebacking music
  1533. switched to Let s Dance by David Bowie lnstead oflaughing everyone
  1534. thought this was a brilliant avant-garde masterstroke of early samplng
  1535. We got some great write-ups "
  1536.  
  1537. Yello s earliest electronic experiments were on "Solid Pleasure"
  1538. released by the American label Ralph Records AIso on the label were
  1539. the legendary Residents who never revealed their true identities but
  1540. appeared in press shots and onstage wearing huge eyeballs on their
  1541. heads Never ones to miss a wheeze they recorded an album Not Available
  1542. with the express stipulaton that it shouldnt be released until they
  1543. had forgotten theyd made it.
  1544.  
  1545. Yello slunk along in their slipstream but with their next album CIaro
  1546. Que Si they joined contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire Kraftwerk and
  1547. The Normal as the first crossovers between avant garde noise and disco
  1548. Pinball Cha Cha from the album was remixed for the dancefloor with a
  1549. manic percussion break which chimed in perfectly with the Latino vogue
  1550. of the times That said bands like Yello were very much out on a
  1551. musical limb at a time when Afrika Bambaata and Arthur Baker had yet
  1552. to give birth to electro funk
  1553.  
  1554. AII the technology for dance music was available but people only used
  1555. it to imitate rock music rather than exploring the possibilities it
  1556. could be put to explains Deiter Those people who chose to explore were
  1557. not considered proper musicians especially in Europe I remember some
  1558. of the first interviews we did with big local newspapers who said So
  1559. you guys you cant really play music can you? Do you think you deserve
  1560. your success? You re not even proper musicians !
  1561.  
  1562. But Yellos real strength lay in their sense of imaginary cinema
  1563. Trackssuch as l Love You on 1983 s You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess
  1564. or 1988s The Race were highly danceable as well as being brilliantly
  1565. scored mini soundtracks for imaginary films with Meier providing the
  1566. storyline via his mischevous verbal synopses a sort of Iatter day
  1567. Salvador Dali outlining his home movies Smallwonder they were in
  1568. constant demand for incidental music on Hollywood soundtracks
  1569.  
  1570. It just so happens with Boris music that you can play it alongside
  1571. most film scenes and it will sound appropriate asserts Dieter lt got
  1572. to the point where Michael Eisner head ofDisney heard us on a moviein
  1573. production andsaid Not those guys again! So now they replace our music
  1574. with someone who does something along our lines The movie industry
  1575. hates working with recording artists because of the legalities They
  1576. prefer to buy a soundtrack outright and we dont sell our music
  1577. outright
  1578.  
  1579. Yello may not have made the money theyshould have from movie
  1580. soundtracks buttheir music has always had a palpable if maginary
  1581. opulence No hammering away at their synths like factory workmen for
  1582. them Yellos sound was sheer electro mahogany assleek luxurious and
  1583. mobile as a Mercedes curving along mountain roads en route for Monte
  1584. Carlo its sumptuousness enhanced by the rich tones of guest vocalists
  1585. such as the late Billy Mackenzie and even near neighbour in
  1586. Switzerland Shirley Bassey on The Rhythm Divine
  1587.  
  1588. This was techno existentialism music where if only for a few luxurious
  1589. dramatic minutes you could dream of becoming whatever you cared to
  1590. become a star in the movie of your imaginary Iife And Boris BIank was
  1591. always on hand with a rich amplified belch or Dieter Meier upfront
  1592. with a subversive twinkle in his eye and a puncturing comic twist as
  1593. if to remind you that ths was meant to be fun inclusive to all who
  1594. cared to listen
  1595.  
  1596. lT S INTRIGUNG THAT YELLO SHOULD HAVE RUN INTO TECHNOPHOBIA AMONG
  1597. European journalists given that all the main pioneers in modern dance
  1598. music from Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk to Can and Front242 DAF and
  1599. Liaisons Dangereuses (who the Detroit crowd cited as major influences)
  1600. have all been European Not American not English even but European The
  1601. same goes for Yello who are filched lock stock and barrel on Jamie
  1602. Principles proto house classic BabyWantsTo Ride"
  1603.  
  1604. Thats an interesting thingyou say agrees Deter because lve always felt
  1605. techno is the first music to have a clear European identity Before we
  1606. were always importing musical syndromes that grew somewhere else lt
  1607. never came from our own soil l truly believe that what we call techno
  1608. comes from European soil People like Kraftwerk and ourselves were
  1609. among the first bands not to be influenced by the Anglo American rock
  1610. syndrome We had to invent our own roots
  1611.  
  1612. Doing promotional tours it was strange to hear 12 or 15 year old Yello
  1613. tracks played But t was only then that we understood just why we had
  1614. been called the Godfathers Of Techno though we had never imagined we
  1615. were any such thing Our music has always been the most organic thing
  1616.  
  1617. By the Nineties increasingly mired in film projects which never saw
  1618. the light ofday Yellos career seemed to have ceased to evolve 1994 s
  1619. Zebra was fine for die hards but seemed caught in the olde worlde
  1620. techno ofthe early Eighties the band s heyday
  1621.  
  1622. AII ofwhich makes Pocket Universe the more gratifying as it sees the
  1623. band Ieap back to the head of the techno charge into the millennium
  1624. Dieter explains the album s concept inherent in the title
  1625.  
  1626. Its Boris idea lt was inspired by the notion that inside every human
  1627. body there are billions of tiny creatures which contribute to your
  1628. system Without those creatures you couldnt survive So who knows maybe
  1629. what we consider to be the big universe could be some tiny speck in
  1630. the ear of a giant Maybe there is something much much bgger than what
  1631. we considerto be the universe
  1632.  
  1633. The new Yellosound is all about micro rather than macro detail which
  1634. is summed up in Dieters the biggest things are the smallest things
  1635. paradox He coins the notion that Boris is a sound surgeon in the
  1636. tradition of the anatomists ofthe 16th Century He opens up the bodies
  1637. of sounds"

  1639. Hence at times Pocket Universe comes across like an exploration of
  1640. innerspace mental as well as physcal Such as on the current single To
  1641. The Sea where the wonderful Swedish songwriter Stina Nordenstam
  1642. performs guest vocals her chilling tones cowering childlike in the
  1643. darkest recesses of her mind Yello then have leap frogged back into
  1644. the future just as dance music is about to explode big time right
  1645. across the globe
  1646.  
  1647. You think American rock is finished? Good its about time The death of
  1648. the dinosaur snorts Dieter Lets get rid ofthe monopolising rock n roll
  1649. cliches and song structures Dance music is great because it is not
  1650. intellectualised lt crosses language barriers it is expressed through
  1651. the body lts a great eseape
  1652.  
  1653. AIso adds Boris if people are happy when they get into this
  1654. Shamanistic mood of enchantment then the mood is very magnetic ln
  1655. Africa there are cults where people dance for hours and hours until
  1656. eventually they become entranced And this makes them happy And in this
  1657. process of going out of their bodies if they become frightened there
  1658. is a circle of women on hand to comfort them and bring them back This
  1659. is very basic to life but it has been forgotten in the West Until now
  1660. maybe It has nothing to do with drugs You truly dont need to do drugs
  1661. Dance is the drug "

  1671. "Pocket Universe" is probably Yello's finest album in 10 years. With
  1672. tracks remixed by Carl Cox and the occasional influence of Fluke, it
  1673. is evidence that Yello have been listening hard to the latest
  1674. developments in the dance scene.

  1676.  The album kicks off with a portentions parody of a sci-fi lecture, as
  1677. Deiter Meier informs us that we are like "solar driftwood", and
  1678. floating on an "insignificant planet" in the vastness of the
  1679. universe. Thus duly reduced to our peoper perspective in the great
  1680. scheme of things, we drift off into a series of mid-paced,
  1681. sequencer-driven excursions, flanked with all manner of cosmic
  1682. detritus and sound pictures folding and unfolding themselves
  1683. kaleidoscopically.
  1684.  
  1685.  The murmur of pan pipes drifts in and out, and sometimes the effect
  1686. is of drifting over ruined civilisations of dead planets in a
  1687. glass-bottomed spacecraft, before the album picks up the pace and
  1688. works itself up into an accelerated, banging frenzy with "Resistor",
  1689. kicking itself up to higher, maniacal levels with every "Go!". A
  1690. scary, yet thoroughly exhilarating roller-coaster ride into inner space.

  1739. your hand is in the air, then you haven't been listening to the
  1740. blindingly good Yello have you? Time to hail switzerland as the true
  1741. home of electronica.

  1744. Dieter Meier, 50-somthing and every inch the dapper Swiss bourgeois
  1745. gentilhomme dismisses his English huntng dog Katie from the
  1746. sumptuously appointed living-room of his magnificent villa set back
  1747. into the hills overlooking Zurich.
  1748.  
  1749. ln the adjoining room two of his daughters the eldest of whom is a
  1750. keen showjumper are playing. He pours me coffee from a silver set and
  1751. enlarges in his eloquent if not always orthodox English on his
  1752. enthusiasm for the current dance scene.  "If I had the time then I
  1753. would live in clubs" he declares his eyes bulging wistfully "In a club
  1754. everyone is a star for one night. People seem to escape in a very
  1755. iconic way from the normal rational behaviour that they usually have
  1756. to hide behind. Its a totally new quality of dance that has come with
  1757. this music in the Nineties. Before it was still pretty formalised even
  1758. in discos when people danced to pop songs. Now people are discovering
  1759. themselves by moving to these rhythms there is this real Shamanistic
  1760. quality to it "

  1762. My minds eye cant help but picture Dieter down the Ministry Of Sound
  1763. dressed in a cravat and Saville Row socks casting an approving eye
  1764. over the sea of scraggy sweaty punters dancing around him.
  1765.  
  1766. "There was a time about 10 years ago", continues Dieter "when a Iot of
  1767. journalists enjoyed our music for its seriousness and would ask us
  1768. Dont you think it is demeaning that your music is played in dance
  1769. nightclubs? Dance music was considered the cheapest of musical forms
  1770. and it was assumed that any serious musician would be ashamed to have
  1771. their music played at a disco They thought wed be angry at this but of
  1772. course we werent The first music on this planet wasdance musicand
  1773. thelast music on this planet will be dance music It was only when rock
  1774. music became the sixth category of bourgeois art that dance music was
  1775. dismissed as not serious enough."

  1777. YELLO HAVE HAD A PRETTY QUIET TIME OF IT SO FAR THIS DECADE but in
  1778. 1997 they have come full circle since their inception way back in 1979
  1779. Their new album Pocket Universe flings song structures tothe wind and
  1780. embarks on linear adventures in space which are as state-of-the-art as
  1781. anything youll hear this year The younger readers among you may never
  1782. have come across them before. You might think the bushy-moustached
  1783. eccentric who swims about fully-clothed in the video oftheir new
  1784. single "To The Sea" is some sort of wacky Euro follow-on to Scatman
  1785. John but there's a great deal more to Yello than that.
  1786.  
  1787. Take Dieter Meier their vocal half He comes from a wealthy Swiss
  1788. family his father having built up his fortune from nothing While his
  1789. brother took care ofthe family business Dieter embarked on a career in
  1790. keeping with the traditions of Zurich his birthplace and home to the
  1791. outrageous avant-garde Dada art movement which flourished there during
  1792. the First World War Combining anarchy with Dandyism he was at one time
  1793. or other (and on occasion simultaneously) a professional gambler
  1794. golfer and performance artist He once paid passers-by in the street a
  1795. dollar each forthewords yes and "no" In spite of his monied relatives
  1796. and extravagant eccentricities Dieter struggled for a while and even
  1797. as he approached 30 was still performing to a handful of people at
  1798. arthouse/outhouse gigs and lugging his own equipment about Then he met
  1799. Boris Blank whose physical appearance ofa comical Latino pimpin an old
  1800. Pink Panther movie belies the actuality of his being a studio hermit
  1801. and techno freak
  1802.  
  1803. "He was a kid who was absolutely music-driven " recalls Dieter
  1804. "For Boris to create sounds was more than a hobby it was as
  1805. important to him as breathing He d drive a truck all day then run
  1806. home to his kitchen and create a masterpiece But I didn't want Boris
  1807. to join the typical syndrome of Swiss musicians who work all week
  1808. then go bananas atthe weekends in their cellars who rehearse and
  1809. rehearse but never perform
  1810.  
  1811. I had a sologig which I turned into the first Yello gig People were
  1812. surprised by it but they didnt throw cans at us ln fact it was a
  1813. success because it was something new something different It was like
  1814. giving birth After the gig we allgot very drunk including our driver
  1815. who was arrested the same night This was to be the flrst ofonly four
  1816. concerts in 18 years Boris BIank is chronically shy of live
  1817. performance The shows they did do however were memorable by accident
  1818. as well as design
  1819.  
  1820. We did a show in the Eighties at the Camden Palace " recalls Bons
  1821. lateras we purr about the streets of Zurich in his Bentley "Wewere
  1822. premiering a new album We went onstage and did a playback with
  1823. Dietersinging Then suddenly there was a fuck-up and thebacking music
  1824. switched to Let s Dance by David Bowie lnstead oflaughing everyone
  1825. thought this was a brilliant avant-garde masterstroke of early samplng
  1826. We got some great write-ups "
  1827.  
  1828. Yello s earliest electronic experiments were on "Solid Pleasure"
  1829. released by the American label Ralph Records AIso on the label were
  1830. the legendary Residents who never revealed their true identities but
  1831. appeared in press shots and onstage wearing huge eyeballs on their
  1832. heads Never ones to miss a wheeze they recorded an album Not Available
  1833. with the express stipulaton that it shouldnt be released until they
  1834. had forgotten theyd made it.
  1835.  
  1836. Yello slunk along in their slipstream but with their next album CIaro
  1837. Que Si they joined contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire Kraftwerk and
  1838. The Normal as the first crossovers between avant garde noise and disco
  1839. Pinball Cha Cha from the album was remixed for the dancefloor with a
  1840. manic percussion break which chimed in perfectly with the Latino vogue
  1841. of the times That said bands like Yello were very much out on a
  1842. musical limb at a time when Afrika Bambaata and Arthur Baker had yet
  1843. to give birth to electro funk
  1844.  
  1845. AII the technology for dance music was available but people only used
  1846. it to imitate rock music rather than exploring the possibilities it
  1847. could be put to explains Deiter Those people who chose to explore were
  1848. not considered proper musicians especially in Europe I remember some
  1849. of the first interviews we did with big local newspapers who said So
  1850. you guys you cant really play music can you? Do you think you deserve
  1851. your success? You re not even proper musicians !
  1852.  
  1853. But Yellos real strength lay in their sense of imaginary cinema
  1854. Trackssuch as l Love You on 1983 s You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess
  1855. or 1988s The Race were highly danceable as well as being brilliantly
  1856. scored mini soundtracks for imaginary films with Meier providing the
  1857. storyline via his mischevous verbal synopses a sort of Iatter day
  1858. Salvador Dali outlining his home movies Smallwonder they were in
  1859. constant demand for incidental music on Hollywood soundtracks
  1860.  
  1861. It just so happens with Boris music that you can play it alongside
  1862. most film scenes and it will sound appropriate asserts Dieter lt got
  1863. to the point where Michael Eisner head ofDisney heard us on a moviein
  1864. production andsaid Not those guys again! So now they replace our music
  1865. with someone who does something along our lines The movie industry
  1866. hates working with recording artists because of the legalities They
  1867. prefer to buy a soundtrack outright and we dont sell our music
  1868. outright
  1869.  
  1870. Yello may not have made the money theyshould have from movie
  1871. soundtracks buttheir music has always had a palpable if maginary
  1872. opulence No hammering away at their synths like factory workmen for
  1873. them Yellos sound was sheer electro mahogany assleek luxurious and
  1874. mobile as a Mercedes curving along mountain roads en route for Monte
  1875. Carlo its sumptuousness enhanced by the rich tones of guest vocalists
  1876. such as the late Billy Mackenzie and even near neighbour in
  1877. Switzerland Shirley Bassey on The Rhythm Divine
  1878.  
  1879. This was techno existentialism music where if only for a few luxurious
  1880. dramatic minutes you could dream of becoming whatever you cared to
  1881. become a star in the movie of your imaginary Iife And Boris BIank was
  1882. always on hand with a rich amplified belch or Dieter Meier upfront
  1883. with a subversive twinkle in his eye and a puncturing comic twist as
  1884. if to remind you that ths was meant to be fun inclusive to all who
  1885. cared to listen
  1886.  
  1887. lT S INTRIGUNG THAT YELLO SHOULD HAVE RUN INTO TECHNOPHOBIA AMONG
  1888. European journalists given that all the main pioneers in modern dance
  1889. music from Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk to Can and Front242 DAF and
  1890. Liaisons Dangereuses (who the Detroit crowd cited as major influences)
  1891. have all been European Not American not English even but European The
  1892. same goes for Yello who are filched lock stock and barrel on Jamie
  1893. Principles proto house classic BabyWantsTo Ride"
  1894.  
  1895. Thats an interesting thingyou say agrees Deter because lve always felt
  1896. techno is the first music to have a clear European identity Before we
  1897. were always importing musical syndromes that grew somewhere else lt
  1898. never came from our own soil l truly believe that what we call techno
  1899. comes from European soil People like Kraftwerk and ourselves were
  1900. among the first bands not to be influenced by the Anglo American rock
  1901. syndrome We had to invent our own roots
  1902.  
  1903. Doing promotional tours it was strange to hear 12 or 15 year old Yello
  1904. tracks played But t was only then that we understood just why we had
  1905. been called the Godfathers Of Techno though we had never imagined we
  1906. were any such thing Our music has always been the most organic thing
  1907.  
  1908. By the Nineties increasingly mired in film projects which never saw
  1909. the light ofday Yellos career seemed to have ceased to evolve 1994 s
  1910. Zebra was fine for die hards but seemed caught in the olde worlde
  1911. techno ofthe early Eighties the band s heyday
  1912.  
  1913. AII ofwhich makes Pocket Universe the more gratifying as it sees the
  1914. band Ieap back to the head of the techno charge into the millennium
  1915. Dieter explains the album s concept inherent in the title
  1916.  
  1917. Its Boris idea lt was inspired by the notion that inside every human
  1918. body there are billions of tiny creatures which contribute to your
  1919. system Without those creatures you couldnt survive So who knows maybe
  1920. what we consider to be the big universe could be some tiny speck in
  1921. the ear of a giant Maybe there is something much much bgger than what
  1922. we considerto be the universe
  1923.  
  1924. The new Yellosound is all about micro rather than macro detail which
  1925. is summed up in Dieters the biggest things are the smallest things
  1926. paradox He coins the notion that Boris is a sound surgeon in the
  1927. tradition of the anatomists ofthe 16th Century He opens up the bodies
  1928. of sounds"

  1930. Hence at times Pocket Universe comes across like an exploration of
  1931. innerspace mental as well as physcal Such as on the current single To
  1932. The Sea where the wonderful Swedish songwriter Stina Nordenstam
  1933. performs guest vocals her chilling tones cowering childlike in the
  1934. darkest recesses of her mind Yello then have leap frogged back into
  1935. the future just as dance music is about to explode big time right
  1936. across the globe
  1937.  
  1938. You think American rock is finished? Good its about time The death of
  1939. the dinosaur snorts Dieter Lets get rid ofthe monopolising rock n roll
  1940. cliches and song structures Dance music is great because it is not
  1941. intellectualised lt crosses language barriers it is expressed through
  1942. the body lts a great eseape

  1944. AIso adds Boris if people are happy when they get into this
  1945. Shamanistic mood of enchantment then the mood is very magnetic ln
  1946. Africa there are cults where people dance for hours and hours until
  1947. eventually they become entranced And this makes them happy And in this
  1948. process of going out of their bodies if they become frightened there
  1949. is a circle of women on hand to comfort them and bring them back This
  1950. is very basic to life but it has been forgotten in the West Until now
  1951. maybe It has nothing to do with drugs You truly dont need to do drugs
  1952. Dance is the drug "

  1962. "Pocket Universe" is probably Yello's finest album in 10 years. With
  1963. tracks remixed by Carl Cox and the occasional influence of Fluke, it
  1964. is evidence that Yello have been listening hard to the latest
  1965. developments in the dance scene.

  1967.  The album kicks off with a portentions parody of a sci-fi lecture, as
  1968. Deiter Meier informs us that we are like "solar driftwood", and
  1969. floating on an "insignificant planet" in the vastness of the
  1970. universe. Thus duly reduced to our peoper perspective in the great
  1971. scheme of things, we drift off into a series of mid-paced,
  1972. sequencer-driven excursions, flanked with all manner of cosmic
  1973. detritus and sound pictures folding and unfolding themselves
  1974. kaleidoscopically.

  1976.  The murmur of pan pipes drifts in and out, and sometimes the effect
  1977. is of drifting over ruined civilisations of dead planets in a
  1978. glass-bottomed spacecraft, before the album picks up the pace and
  1979. works itself up into an accelerated, banging frenzy with "Resistor",
  1980. kicking itself up to higher, maniacal levels with every "Go!". A
  1981. scary, yet thoroughly exhilarating roller-coaster ride into inner space.

  2327. First, I would like to correct a little thing that some people do
  2328. about me:=A0I'm not Bruno DURRENBERGER, my real name is Greg VIALLE.
  2329. Bruno is a friend of mine which permits me to send and to receive my
  2330. e-mails via his own add and that's why I can be on this list (I have
  2331. no PC or MAC at home) - a perfect example of dedicated friend,
  2332. isn't it ? !=B0)

  3166. yes. for non-UK residents, it was released on monday 26th, which is in fact a 
  3167. bank-holiday. it is not obligatory for shops to open, as the UK financial 
  3168. systems and most manufacturing etc. companies are closed!

  3170. but i found a record shop that was open, and sold it to me for GBP 15.49

  3172. i will comment more fully, however my first impressions are:

  3174. what a deeply spiritual and altogether brilliant album that not only shows 
  3175. Yello to be progressive, but to have maintained and built on their musical 
  3176. innovation. 'beyond mirrors' particularly has a very personal and deep meaning 
  3177. for me.

  3179. there are one or two things about the album which interest me. firstly they 
  3180. have used old samples, but used them in a way which emphasises the original 
  3181. context of the sample, as well as bringing new music. i must say originally i 
  3182. wondered about the use of the helicopter sample in 'beyond mirrors' for the 
  3183. dialogue it covered, until i remembered the former use of the same effect in 
  3184. 'blender'.
  3185.  
  3186. on the audio side, unless i'm very much mistaken (possibly even as far as 
  3187. getting my hearing and stereo system checked!) they have used compression on 
  3188. the album particularly during the very deep bass beats and sections.
  3189.  
  3190. if this is intentional, to mirror the compression used by FM and AM stations 
  3191. where i have a chunk of my daily diet of music, is brilliance at it's best, 
  3192. and extremely effective in making the sound louder than it actually is.
  3193.  
  3194. to celebrate this album, i have invested in a better / newer stereo for my 
  3195. car! (kenwood 757-c) (ok, and the tape transport on my old one was packing in 
  3196. :) )
  3197.  
  3198. i plan to correct and repost the lyrics when i have sat down with headphones 
  3199. and the track search buttons, but one comment, the album sounds very 'in my 
  3200. head' on headphones, yet again, a lovely touch to the whole album.

  3366. I think I saw it at PooBah's in Pasadena last Thursday.  I also picked
  3367. up the vinyl version of the UK "To The Sea" release from there (the only
  3368. copy of course).  Doug Laurent's version is the only passable version;
  3369. why do the insist on allowing these half-witted third parties to destroy
  3370. their music?
