Subject: (yello) Review of To the Sea
Date: 03 Feb 1997 14:39:50 +0100
Hi !
My name is Eric SchΣder (if you got a strange sign as the 4:th one in my
last name, I can tell you that it's supposed to be pronounced something
like Schaeder). I'm from Lund in Sweden and I have just (two weeks ago
acctually) joined the mailing list. As far as Yello goes, I'll go there.
Now, I've seen that there have been some dates going around about when To
The Sea and Pocket Universe are going to be released. As far as I know, the
single is released tomorrow (the 4:th that is) according to my lokal record
store (Folk & Rock). They have also pleased my curiosity with a date for
the album, and that is the 24:th of february. If those dates goes for the
rest of the world or just Europe, I don't know. The single To The Sea has
also been reviewed in my lokal Paper, Sydsvenska Dagbladet, and they like
it. This is what they wrote. Well, what I translated it into.
"NORDENSTAM AND YELLO, A HIT.
A lot is to be heard before your ears fall of but this one takes the price.
Yello together with Stina Nordenstam, a combination that on paper is
laughable, but turns out exelent, when the initial shock has settled. After
the latest Yello album, Zebra, it was easy to sort them out as technoclowns,
but this senslessly bold move to let the cool, almost cold voice of Stina
Nordenstam blend with Boris Blanks technoballad is - if not genial - very
very succsessful. For both of them, actually."
For those of you who eventually don't know, Stina Nordenstam is a Swedish
female singer who, as Jonas Warstad wrote, is highly in demand by the record
companies.
Regards
Eric

Subject: (yello) weekly Yello Dose?
Date: 03 Feb 1997 15:44:05 -0500 (EST)
Odd thing happened the past two weeks. Last Sunday night I was watching the
Discovery Channel and saw a part of a documentary about the Canary Islands.
There was a scenic, few minute segment that was taken from a helicopter as it
flew over the steaming volcanoes. "Hawaiian Chance" was playing in the
background.
I stayed with the program to see the credits at the end and as I thought
there was none given to Yello. There was however an unusual name credited for
Musical Consultant(or something similar). To the best of my recollection the
name credited was Feifer Meiofer.
Too close to be a coincidence?
Also, last night on The Learning Channel (TLC) there was a show titled "Side
Show" about the circus, etc. "The Race" was playing in the background during
part of the show that featured the "Wolfboys" of a Mexican circus.
Anyone else catch any of these or am I cracking up?
Best, FG

Hi,
I just returned from a trip to our local CD store here in Munich. I got the
new single "to the sea". The cover says:
YELLO

My first impression: poor. I would not have it recognized as a Yello song, if
I heard it the first time in the radio.

Hi. New CD single To The Sea does contain two third party remixes
and the original version. So, I'm hoping to save money by not buying
this CD single and getting the original version within the album.
But, Jonas earlier wrote that this song seems not to be on the album.
CD single says the song is re-touched from the album.
What you think, will the original version be on the album as it is
on this CD single?
This CD single has tracks:
to the sea (radio version/northern mix) 3:52 (third party remix)
to the sea (original version) 3:27
to the sea (southern mix) 3:48 (third party remix)
If you see CD singles with different contents, please let us know ASAP.
Any Boris remixes are must must.

Greetings all,
I wanted to ask if all of you Europeans who are already enjoying
the new Yello single (I live in the US), could try to find out when the
single and album are coming out in the US....no records stores here have
any information (or are willing to find out any information). I've been
waiting with baited breath for the new Yello, and now I'm becoming
dissapointed of the skewing of US release dates...or possibly even, the
fact it WON'T be released US. Any info anyone?
Thanks,

I guess it's only used by Dieter to record his vocals,
Boris dosn't like to leave his Zurich studio. It's easy
to make music today without having to be physically
together in the same studio - at least if you can afford
to by the necessary equipment...

I picked this up over the weekend. I'm in the US, so for the rest of you
this side of the ocean, keep an eye out. Not surprisingly the original
mix (Boris mix) is the most distinctive and I think the best. The
vocalist sounds like a cross between Bjork and Alison Shaw of Cranes. I'm
not surprised she is in demand -- quite a voice, and an usual voice as
well. Good song, but if this is an indication of what to expect from the
album, perhaps Yello's time as innovators has passed.

I must say that I only agree with you halfways.
I find Stina Nordenstrom a great singer as well but I don't think you're
being fair when you say that Yello's time as innovators has passed.
Dieter Meier didn't write the lyrics to To The Sea (correct me if I'm wrong
but Stina is credited for the lyrics) and I think the song fits well into
the overall work of Boris. Besides, I guess that it's not always the artist
themselves who desides which songs are considered single-material. The
record company may have a lot to say in that matter.
My point is that I don't think we should write Yello off just because a
less good song are released.
I still have faith that Pocket Universe will be yet another great album in
the Yello history.
But of course, that attitude may give me major dissapointments. :-(

Yeah! Also, because On Track is supposed to be a hybrid
of Do It and Jungle Bill! (According to George Plank)
And who would really believe that Boris would do soft
songs only? We all know that each album features a variety
of songs, from heavy metal (!) to crooning stuff like Capri Calling.
I hope that this album's Capri Calling is indeed To the Sea.
(And yes, Stina wrote the lyrics to To the Sea. Dieter certainly
said no to this song, because it didn't give him any stories to
write lyrics around. If you see what I mean.)

I believe it's a very nice song. My thoughts went in the directon of Capri
Calling. Some friends of mine usually has commented the song as not a
typical Yello song, but they agree that if it was Dieters voice they heard
instead of Stina's it would be more of a Yello song. Maybe it's that Stinas
singing is not in the tradition of what we've become used to know as a Yello
singer (with the exeption of the wonderfull Shirley Bassey of course). I
believe that Stina did a great job with the lyrics and I truly hope that we
will hear more of them working together. Maybe Jonas (or someone) knows if
there is more on Pocket Universe to expect.
Is there any release date on On Track on CD?

I don't know, but I don't think so. We'll know on Monday.
You think Stina did a great job with the lyrics? Yeah,
probably, but I have to admit that I can't hear half of the
words she's "singing". It certainly isn't Swedish dialect
she's using, it's her own personal "dialect", call it trademark
if you will. She's drawling her words, a bit like George Young
did in Flash & the Pan (remember them?). I always thought that
Dieter was a bit tricky to hear what he was "singing/talking",
but Stina is trickier.
> Is there any release date on On Track on CD?
He told me that the next single isn't decided yet, I suggested
On Track, and he told me "maybe". ("He" is not Boris though)
In any case, Boris' version from the 3x12" pack will also be on
the album, so there's no reason to worry. When I phoned them
this time last year (asking about my interview!!), I was told that
Boris is currently working on some 12" versions (after having
been in bed for two weeks - the flue reaches even him), so
he must have something up his sleeve.

That's the *only* version that Boris mixed himself, and it will be on the
album too. (Only version, in so far as has been released that is).
I forgot to tell you this in my previous mail: Yello will have a totally
new official site up coinciding with the release of the album. The
URL will be in the booklet. Maybe they even linked to some of our
sites too? Who knows? But I get the feeling they won't. Wanna bet?

Hi!
I phoned Zurich today and got some answers
regarding some recent topics (apart from asking
about my long overdue interview!)
The laser show in Munich does *not* feature
any different versions than on the CD. The
only difference is that not *all* of the album tracks
were used.
To the Sea *will* be included on the album.
Yello will do a lot of promotion for their album,
visiting Stockholm too shortly!
The 3x12" pack On Track only has *one*
version done by Boris himself, all the others
are remixed by various DJs. The reason it
is (and always will be!) a limited edition
(about 1,200) is simply that it was too
expensive to manufacture. (Or rather, that
they made too little money on it because
of this :-)
Finally, I have a CD for sale: A Canadian
CD-Maxi (12" Inch Classics on CD),
including Oh Yeah Extended Version 6.22,
(and another track by Munich Machine -
A Giorgio Moroder project from 1977.)
Cat no is: SP5-1637. Bids anyone?
I could also swap it, no problem.

That was about time. The old site hasn't been updated for ages. I'm curious
to see if they are gonna link to our sites but I won't bet on it.
I've read in an interview that Dieter has an email account but it doesn't

Anyway it's great news to hear about the new yello-site. Where from do you

In the german magazin "keys" 3/97 there's an interview with Boris
Blank, about the new album, composing and production works (and a
list of all the used samplers and synthesizers)... Nothing very new,
still working with images and sound-landscapes and so on.
Pocket universe is said to be even more techno-influenced than Zebra
- well, that's what we heard (and saw) in the Planetarium-show of
Deutsches Museum Muenchen.
I hope they didn't forget the Capri Calling style - I love it. So I
really like "To the sea" ;-)

(Last week I found an extract of a song by Dieter Meier "You gotta be
smart to show your heart...", maybe from a session in 1990 or 91.
Anybody knows something 'bout that?)

Any idea of a UK release date. I've been and asked around and the
record shops I've spoken to don't have it on their lists for
release in the next two weeks at least. Apparantly that is how much
notice they get of future releases to order them.

Hello all
The new Yello site is great I love the RealAudio. Listened to each song
about twenty times now. I'm going to love this new album it seems to be very
dark which I find to be great. So couldn't stand it and called in a pre order
for a overnight shipping gotta have it.
This is just my opinion. I feel after listening and studying the new On
Track LPs. That it is for sure all mixed by Boris. I went and listened to it
on a very nice stereo set up at a friends to get all the detail I could hear.
First of all all the songs sound like they came from the same place. Meaning
they were definetly recorded on the same mixing board. Then there is the
sounds them self that are used by the mixes. Most of the sounds are from a
synthesizer called Morpheus by the Emu co. Boris used it on Zebra a lot but
now that I listened to the On track and the new samples on the web it for
sure sounds like Morpheus is his primary lead bass and mid instrument.
Morpheus has a very distinct sound. (remember I could be wrong)
Then there is just the pure sound of talent and knowledge. I think that
Boris tried very hard(well not to hard) to sound like it would be mixed by
some other guy. The mixes are to detailed and the Morpheus sounds are all
over the other mixes.
Well thats my theory. If thats not it then the mixers were in Borises
studio. But they all for sure came from the same place.
cant wait for the album any longer its driving me crazy I'm sure same for
you ... Julian

I have great problem in viewing the new Yello pages correctly.
Major problem is that in Win, there is no realaudio and it cannot
be installed (because there are 100 other people working in the same
computer room). Second, I'm not sure does everything work as should
even we have Netscape Gold 3.0 (or such).
I would like to have those sound samples --- or are they just audio from
the album songs? In which case I will just buy the new album.
But if there are any sound samples, then I would like to get them.
If somebody could download them and upload to my site, then perfect!
I hate this Java system already: should I really wait for 2 hours
to see all those text which are constantly changing? I think I will
download all of the stuff and build a new web-page where all are
static. Then it takes only half a minute to read them all, view all
the images, and decide what to download.
And I once though that the Usenet newsgroups are a big waste of the
time... silly me!!

Remember the How How samples? They are preprocessed samples. It may be
that remixers just used the preprocessed samples.

I bought YELLO pocket universe at Hugendubel in Perlacher Einkaufspassagen
for DM 34,50. Please see http://members.aol.com/FranzGall/yello.htm for a b/w
scan of the leaflet.
First impression: terrific, gorgeous. Plenty of new sounds, no techno speed.
Some the songs remind me to intros of SF space operas. Also Jean-Michel
Jarre says hello. Choruses, strange rhythms, even songs with no rhythms.
I am very happy, this sounds much more better than the single release.

Hi!
I just thought I'd give some facts on the new
album, which was released today in Europe.
Title: Pocket Universe
Release date: 24 Feb 1997
Cat no: Mercury, 534 353-2
Tracks:
1. Solar Driftwood 1.51
2. Celsius 5.59
3. More 6.39
4. On Track 5.33
5. Monolith 6.21
6. To the Sea 5.46 [longer than single version]
7. Magnetic 5.53
8. Liquid Mountain 2.58
9. Pan Blue 5.31
10. Resistors 7.13
11. Beyond Mirrors 5.49
12. To the Sea 3.52 (radio version/northern mix) [remixed by Steve B-Zet]
Track 12 is not mentioned on the cover or in the booklet,
it was obviously a last-minute decision to include it.
There's a tiny sticker on the cover "incl. bonus track to the sea
remix by Steve B-Zet".
There are no guest players on this album (Chico Hablas,
Beat Ash etc), and no space between songs. One thing
I noticed was the absence of the usual amount of humour,
surprise and craziness that at least I expect. This is an
album that has a lot of seriousness about it, at least
compared to their earlier albums. No sudden "real" drum
solos, or "real" guitar solos. It's cooler and darker.
(My favourite is Celsius!!!!!) If you liked Zebra, you will
probably like this one too. If you expect another 'Baby'
or earlier - forget it. I guess those days are over...

"News" about "Lightmaker"
(Taken from the 3h-broadcast with Dieter and Boris on Swiss Radio DRS3;
Friday, 14th February)
There are existing two complete cut-versions of the movie; but Dieter isn't
satisfied with any. In the last years he often lost hope to bring the
project to an end; so he put pressure to himself: He's now on a
post-production-situation, which is so expensive that now, it's existential
to complete the movie...
Now he doesn't work alone anymore but with "Hollywood"; i.e. he want that
"Lightmaker" (is NOT the final title) should have commercial chances.
Dieters problem is, that he lost himself in 160km (!) of celluloid;
structure of the story is clear for a long time - it's about classic
Orpheus-subject.
Story: A musician from N.Y. is seduced by his love to the underworld where
she had been kidnapped. This world is placed in a mountain where a
forgotten kingdom is vegetating around. To have new life they need the
musician, because only he is capable to open the centre - a big crystal -
and to enlighten the empire of darkness. The musician has been deceived
with fair words that the only way to find again his love is to make music,
i.e. to illuminate the underworld. He starts playing but the evil powers
have their own interests; they need the music to survive... (Story will
have a happy-end!)
P.S.: pocket universe is great :-))))

I got a tape with the 3hour interview of Yello in the Swiss radio.
It was hard for me to "decode" the swiss dialect.
Shure it is a kind of german but even if you understand this dialect,
it is neraly impossible to follow Dieters and Borsi words.
So for all of you some facts that were interesting and new for me:
* Boris sound bibliothec has a capacity of 4GB
That gives over 3 hours of high-quality stereo samples.
* Boris did not record any new samples for Pocket Universe
* For the first time Dieter sampled his voice first and then Boris created
the sound
* Carl Cox coproduced the song "Magnetic" on the new album
* Billy Macenzie commited suicide....
* Boris produced half of the songs on Billy Macenzies last album
* Yello got the "gro=DFer Kulturpreis der Stadt Z=FCrich"(cultural honour of
the city of Zurich)
* They were the first pop group recieving this honour.
* Yello donated the 40000 sFr. from this prize to a fund to educate
children in music.
* Yello only made two live appearances =B483 at the Roxy N.Y.
and =B495 at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund for the "MAYDAY" clubbing
* They also appeared 95 at MTV
* Dieter wnts to make a Yello show in Las Vegas, but Boris does not like to
play live
* For the Planet Universe show in Munich, Dieter used kitchen tools and
filmed them in very close up for new effects
* Stina Nordenstam should appear on the Lightmaker soundtrack, but Yello
decided to make another song for the new album
*Dieter is planning a new film called "Directors Cut" and he also want to

Thank you for the facts. It looks like Boris is decreasing the quality
because there are lousy mixers coproducing songs on the album.
I have Carl Cox's album and it basically is lousy, both artistically
and technically -- it is mastered to contain much bass frequencies,
never heard such mastering before.
Nice samplelibrary, I bet. From earlier interviews there are
20000-30000 sounds.
I wonder how many samples there are here in the network. Quite much.
There are many synth sounds and I'm sure there are many samples of
the old analog synths. Unfortunately my network connection is a floppy
disk connection with respect to downloading.

Hi. I have an MTV interview made at the time of Zebra release.
Either Boris says 60-80000 or 16-18000 sounds; I hear he is saying
quite clearly "eighty", not "eighteen".

Is that an album that is released or to be ? Does anyone have the name and
number of that album.

Don_t forget that they_ve also appeard in the Brittish TV program "The Tube"
at the end of the 80_s with "Godrush" and a short interview with Dieter.
Are there any other releases from theire live appearances than "Yello live
at the Roxy" and "She_s got a gun" from concert at Roxy N.Y. _83.

"The Tube" appearence was not live --- I saw it because it was broadcasted
over the entire Europe. The program was some special one.
There is this live version of Santiago. What live that was at '86 or such?

Regarding the "new" single "To The Sea":
I finally received my copy from ESPIRIT UK (they sold out & had to reorder)
and found it tasty.By no means a complete meal. The 12" is also on backorder.
That means *someone* has been buying it.
I found Stina's vocals to be sultry & somewhat seductive reminiscent of
Sylvia's "Pillow Talk" or Bette Midler's "Do You Wanna Dance". Boris finally
got the opportunty to use that seagull sample that has been on the shelf
since "Call it Love"; it should make a decent segue for a mega mix.
I await my Pocket Universe copy as credit from the same mail order store that
failed to provide me with a copy of "On Track". I was able to procure a copy-
thanks to this circle of fans.
All the best,
Fred

Subject: (yello) Pocket Universe in USA/UK - sooner or later.....
Date: 27 Feb 1997 23:01:53 +0100
Hi!
Maybe some of you are unaware of why Pocket
Universe isn't released in the US/UK yet.
I'll tell you why: because the record companies
in question have other things to do right now.
They have other artists that need promotion
first - they don't want their own releases to
compete with each other. It's that simple.
In short: money. That's what's it all about.
Did someone mentioned the word "music"
here? Or "art"? No, no, no, then you have
a lot to learn about the music business.
Because that's what it is: bu$ine$$.....
Do I sound cynical? Well, maybe, but not
compared to most record companies...
No wonder some artists (*many* artists) get
fed up with it, and start to release their own
records via Internet. Like Prince. He will soon
release a 3-CD with "previously bootlegged
material" - ONLY via Internet. And that's how
it's gonna be in the future. You order your
music directly from the artist. Maybe with
Yello too. Probably you'll be able to buy rare
stuff in this way. The future will tell.

Jonas Warstad

Hi. I have the new album. It is interesting and some techno flavoured.
There are some reuses, including
-fast vocal beats from suite 904 (CD single containing bible mix)
-yelling vocal from Si Senor the Hairy Grill
-some vocals from some song I don't remember, very processed
Search more reuses yourself!
There are standard techno/rave sounds used but nicely.
Magnetic is quite the same than Musky on Carl Cox's album; I hate
already that. :-) There are additional vocals.

Hello
Found some other news about "Lightmaker":
According to an interview in the Swiss TV-magazine "TR7" (Nr.10/97),
Dieters movie (ex-Lightmaker, ex-Once Upon A Dream, ex-Snowball) will be
out in December 1997, most probably...

æSacrifice and Be SacrificedÆ, æBabyÆ [lyrics by MacKenzie/Blank], æWhat

on the LightsÆ, æIn Windows AllÆ. æBabyÆ contains real Yello samples!

No. She's Got a Gun is not from Dec 1983, it's from a fashion show
at the Palladium, N.Y., 4 Sep 1985.

(Y)hello,
The 15th of February, in the sunday afternoon, I have seen the rudgy
meeting France-Gall on F2, a French TV Channel...
The referee was very looks like to Dieter ! Did somebody seen him
too ?
Ironicly, I was just came back from my import store to get the new
MCD 'To The Sea' (that I really like - contrary to some people in
this list) !
The original mix is my favorite I think - Boris' style is the best !
First track is too commercial (sorry, Steve B-Zet !), third is quite
good.
Personal feelings !
