PU and this album have really good sounds. For some reason Zebra
is most popular CD here. I know Zebra was blamed at the time but
it is not that bad. My wife said the new album is a bit slack
compared to Zebra when I played Zebra to get change from MP.

All Yello albums have had been good but I always get ideas on what
the next album should have differently!

I just love those sweeping vocal morph (whatever) sounds on MP.
Zebra has them at least in Move Dance Be Born, PU has them, and now
MP. Boris mentioned Supernova and Nord Lead synths in the recent chat
but I'm not sure if they do the thing. Anyone?

By the way, I downloaded immediately manuals for both of them. Check
www.novationusa.com and www.clavia.se. Even if you have some other
modular synth or softsynth such as Csound, you could pick up a few
thousand Nord Modular patches --- the file format seems to be plain
ascii and it is documented. But anyone know how those vocal morphs
actually works? Weblinks would be nice too.

I was reading a book called The Complete Cross-Referenced Guide to the Baby
Buster Generation's Collective Unconscious that claims they are "A
Dictionary of Cultural Literacy for Humans who grew up in the '80s" by Glenn
Gaslin and Rick Porter.  (A very long title for a book!)  I thought they had
something interesting to say about our favorite group, Yello.

Well... some people might have heard the track "The Race" as well, don't you
think? Sporting events, commercials, movies... :) Don't know who wrote this,
but I'm not quite sure his local copy of "Collective Unconscious" is totally
up to date

Tracks from "Motion Pictures" are already being used as background music on
a popular morning show on the biggest local radio here in Norway. And I just
stopped by a new documentary (or something) on the TV with tracks from
"Baby" as music throughout the program.

And... wow(!)... Yello's great album "Motion Picture" is this weeks fastest
climbing in the official charts for Norway. Up from 39 to 21 since last
week. Interesting to see more people are getting it. There's also a comment
regarding Yello, I'll post it later...

The fact that these same people refer to the character of Ferris Bueller as a
"hero" , speaks volumes to me of the likely validity of any of their opinions.

I once had the misfortune to see this film and found the central character to
be a nauseating little prick, not surprisingly I walked out after 15 minutes
annoyed that I had wasted my money and time on such unadulterated rubbish.

One day Yello's music will find it's way onto the soundtrack of a film that's
actually worthwhile.....

Well, I apologize if this topic bored some of you out there the first time
it was mentioned, but that's what you have delete buttons for.

Anyways, as I had talked about before, I had waged the war in my head about
converting to Mac over PC (especially in regards to music making).

Although I will keep my PC for now, it will definitely go in the closet once
I get my hands on my new Mac system soon.

But there's just one problem. :-0

I originally said that I would start saving up for a G4 tower, but now the
new iMac DV systems have really caught my attention.

The new iMac DV's have now inlcuded all of the features that I originally
wanted in the first editions :

350 or 400 G3 Processors
100 Mhz System Bus
64 or 128 MB RAM
2 Fire Wire Ports
6, 10, 0R 13GB Ultra ATA Drives
8 MB Video RAM
ATI Rage 128 Card (2x AGP)
4x DVD-ROM
Harmon Kardon speakers
iMovie video software

Plus, I've always wanted to get into video editing. I've been thinking of
building a site to house all of my rare Art Of Noise footage on, but I don't
have a video capture device.

So now the debate is, which one should I buy ?

To paraphrase a statement made by Apple, they said that you would only need
a G4 over an iMac if you needed a bigger monitor
(??? Monitors are sold separately from the G4 towers), needed PCI expansion,
or if you needed more than a maximum of 512 MB of RAM.

Surely that'a a faulty statement.

I like the iMac because it's truly plug-and-play, and everything is so
compact and easily accessible (ever have to change an audio cable from the
back of a large tower case ? It's quite a bitch when you have little room to
move around !!!!).

Plus, I love the flavors (hey, when will we see a Lemon model ?)

:-)

But I want the G4 for its brute-strength processing.

Either way, both models will be faster than the newest Pentiums (according
to Apple's tests LOL) .

So what do you Mac Addicts think ? : New iMac, or new G4 ?

BTW : I know that there are USB MIDI boxes available for the Mac, but are
there any full-fledged USB audio cards/boxes out there ? I know that Roland
and Edirol released their UA-100 Audio Canvas, but its interface software is
specifically for PC. I really want to start doing 24-bit recording.

To give you insight on whether you'll be better off with a PC vs. a G4 will
depend on how much you "work" system. I use both platforms and both operate
differently depending on what you use them for.

The PC will generally work fine, and has the most video/capture/edit software
titles available, and may be the way to go if you have little money to
invest. However, Windows is notoriously famous for freezing up on you, and
you'll need to run NT on the PC if you expect to work non-stop without
interruptions. The G4 is designed to be a clydesdale/quarterhorse
combo-speed, and a bulletproof operating system. Apple is great (although not
yet as cheap as PCs) for video, and IMHO, the quality is superior, and the
processors are more efficient.

It'll be a big decision for you especially if you intend to dump a lot of $$$
into your set up. My advice would be to talk to a few video pros in the
industry who use each system to help you decide what's best for you. They'll
know what works, and what doesn't.

Nice that Yello get played in a club at all! They are completely dancable to
my mind (and I've been quite a keen clubber in my time) and yet they don't
get played. I believe this is because they have "too much" personality in
their music, which leads DJs too consider them a commercial/pop act. If only
their music was completely instrumental and nondescript eh? (Ha!)

Where I go it just isn't done, and they wouldn't have any anyway. The last
time I got to dance to Yello was early on one night and it was a mix of
Jungle Bill. It didn't exactly fill the floor though.

Very nicely put! If Yello were 30 years younger with one fifth of their
brains, one hundreth of their talent and one thousandth of their taste they

songs that your grandmother would like bit. It makes me so mad - mad enough
to KILL!

Well, not exactly, but here is what the biggest Norwegian newspaper comments
to Yello being this weeks fastest climbing album on the national charts -
directly translated from Norwegian:

"Old men must not be underestimated! Dieter Meyer and Boris Blank in swiss
Yello still attracts people/buyers with their ("cinematic"? "movielike"?)
kind of music. Not at all unfair, when knowing Yello was far ahead of their

Hmm... This newspaper definitely thinks Yello is not ahead anymore. That
they are getting old is harder to argue with :)  But who cares really, when
they still make music like "Point Blank" and "Prisoner of his mind"?

A review is a review, good or bad.

I still cannot understand why they choose not to sell in UK.

I've ordered it, I await.... I tried to download the RAM files with
lynx, but my PC claims they are corrupt... :(

Well, I've heard the album... initial impression: what are they smoking?
They need to stop.

I really do not like the new album very much.

I own a lot of Yello, I was one of the very few that liked Pocket Universe
and Zebra tremendously. I think these two albums are their strongest works
followed closely by Baby.

Now, let me sum up the good points about Motion Picture:

The following tracks are okay (in my order, best to weakest): Point Blank,
Get On, Squeeze Please, Houdini

As for the rest... they are perhaps the weakest Yello tunes I've ever heard.
I am not happy with this new album at all. In past experience, I was happy
with every new album that came along immediately. Now, as a fairly die hard
fan, I will continue to listen to this new album and hope I will "see the
light" eventually, since I feel as if I *must* like it basically because
it's Yello.

I have not received my fix. :P

I'm also interested in Kraftwerk but I think we should respect the charter

compare Yello and Kraftwerk or such (see the recent article series
on what else music Yello fans listens to). But that Kraftwerk announce
had nothing to do with Yello, period.

I'm sure there are more glueless people like you who don't mind
crossposting and charters, but you all can grow up to respect other readers!
If my tone is rather unrespective, it is only because you're just looking
at a mirror and see how unrespective mails were posted.

I'm interested in Kraftwerk and I'm interested in audio software/hardware,
but we should take them elsewhere.

Well, yes -- I would say that I do like techno sound. But I love "Baby" all
the same. Baby is incredible! Full, clean acoustic sound. That's why it
ranks in my top three Yello albums.

I would say that of the three I mentioned, they are my favourite in this
order: Zebra, Pocket Universe, and Baby. But don't misunderstand, all three
of these are nearly equal in my book and all get nearly equal playing time
(with Zebra edging out slightly). Zebra has to be the best album ever, in my
opinion. Night Train is simple fabulous!

I really enjoyed Pocket Universe's experiemental/conceptual feel. It was
really original, cutting edge stuff. It still is very, very unique even two
and a half years later.

But Motion Picture isn't really all that ground breaking. When I listen to
Yello albums, each one progresses. Motion Picture is the first album that
doesn't seem to really go anywhere. It's more of a rehash or "fresh look" at
older concepts and older sounds. This is what disappointed me. I was
expecting something "all new". While the songs themselves are new, the sound
they provide isn't necessarily.

Just my nine cents of commentary in this one dime world.
