Subject: (yello) 3 questions
Hi all,
I had 3 questions to you
1. You found Yello videos weak. But what did you expect from them? What kind
of videos did you suppose to see instead?
2. If Yello release very poor, weak album (let's imagine it as a theory),
will you stop to consider yourself as their fan?
3. What music (groups, genres) do you listen to except Yello?
Privet!

Today's Russian joke (without any intention):
Husband (H) is coming back from the business trip. Of course he is
suspecting his wife to be with her lover. He is opening his flat's door,
running to the room and seeing his wife (W) lying on the bed and trembling.
H(angry): Why are you on the bed?!
W: I'm ill!
H(very angry): Why are you trembling?!
W: It's a shiver.
Husband is becoming to search for wife's lover and (of course) finding the
naked man(M)*
H: Who is it?!
W: It's a doctor!
H: Why is he naked?
M: Because we doctors haven't been getting our earms for a year!**
*It was his wife's lover

Personnaly, I don't find Yello's videos to be bad - it's the kind of
videos I would expect from them. Their music is playful and you never
know what to expect and the same holds for the videos. If you look
at the videos you can at least say that they must have had quite fun
recording them.
>2. If Yello release very poor, weak album (let's imagine it as a theory),

Even on a week album there is one or two songs that are worth the
listen and that is enough for me. And with time you always seem to
find some new song that you havn't noticed before that is good, and
then a new one and so on.
I will never stop consider myself as their fan, even if they made
real lousy albums - then I'd just be a fan of thier earlier music.

I had my first contact with the song Bostich.
It must have been 1985 or so, when I was on a excursion to a
textile-factory with my school.
I filmed all the machines with the videocamera of our school, and I had to
look for a good "soundtrack"for the material.
A friend of mine had a huge collection of vinyls, and he also got the
Bostich 12".
That was the beginning of my Yello-mainia.
The song fitted so perfect to my video. It seemed to be made only for my
pictures.
Every scene, cut and the movement of the machines was connected with the
rhytm and the voice.
Years later I saw the original Bostich video, and I was very dissappointed.
The funny thing about Yello's music is, that it fits to nearly any movie
you are making.
At my time in school I made lots of "videoclips" using Yellomusic. And on
my final examination I also wrote an essay about Yello and their idea in
finding new ways in producing sounds and making compositions.
Later on I decided to collect all the songs Boris ever made.
It was a very expensive and time-filling hobby. But now I can say that I
own all of his works,
but I have to admit that Bostich is still my alltime favorite...
Yours,
G E O R G
PS: The only negative effect in Yello-music is, that you should not listen
to it while driving your car.
I am always getting faster and faster - it=B4s a desaster !

I made some searches about the French videos of ORANGINA and LEVI'S where
was played respectively BLUE NABOU and BOSTICH and I found a very
interesting site of a French group who organize some commercials nights ("LA
NUIT DES PUBLIVORES") in France (a very 6 hours funny event). You can found
the totality of the films on their site for of a fee of 20 US$ (120 FF) for

1. I do like the Yello videos but I have often wondered about the little girl that
appears in a a few of them -- my wife always says that the girl makes her
"uneasy" and indeed I am not quite sure I get the point.
2. After listening to Yello for over 10 years, I don't think a "bad" album will make
me stop being a fan.
3. -- Yello, electronic music in general (Jarre, Vangelis, Eno, Klaus Schu
lze, FSOL, Orb, Orbital, Kraftwerk, Art of Noise)
-- industrial (NIN, Front 242, KMFDM, Rammstein)
-- what they call new age/world music/ethnic these days (Delerium,
Enigma, Bel Canto, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Deep Forest)
-- goth (Cure, Siuxie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy)
-- trip (Portishead, Massive Attack, EBTG, Mono, Morcheeba)
-- techno (Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Leftfield)
-- old rock bands (Queen, Deep Purple, Rainbow, AC/DC, Emerson
Lake & Palmer, Led Zeppelin)
-- Of course, the list won't be complete without Pink Floyd, King
Crimson, Genesis, Marillion, Rush...
I also like classical music (Beethoven, Orff, Bach) and jazz. For jazz the list will
be too long, but I'll list Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck,
Herbie Hancock, Sade...
I have been on the mailing list for over a year now and I was wondering
if readers of the list are interested in what other music Yello fans listen to. I
have found most of the other bands mentioned on the list either ones that I
regularly listen to (e.g. Kraftwerk, Art of Noise) or ones that I hadn't heard of
before but which I end up liking (e.g. Propellerheads, Coldcut, Grid).
Since one can hardly know all the different bands out there, hearing about
non-Yello music that Yello fans like works as a pretty good filter... Some of the
online music stores are trying to implement the "if you liked this album you may
want to check out that one" but most don't work quite as well as the Yello list for
me.
I would like to add a few names and albums which I find interesting:
Brian Eno -- Nerve Net
Delerium -- Karma
Future Sound of London -- Lifeforms
Juno Reactor -- Bible of Dreams
Cheers!

Juno Reactor are well worth a listen. Does anyone know of any albums since
Bible of Dreams?
If there are any fans of Art of Noise, I would perhaps recommend the Future
Sound of London,
as along simliar lines. I've only got the Dead Cities album, but it reminds
me of what was on many of the
AON's albums - perhaps with greater layering, and more structuring -
(basically a more complex sound.)

I have to main artists that i lsiten two. Some 80 % of my D collection
consists if their albums. It is Yello of cource, and then it is Prince or

Well, for 'To The Sea' I was expecting a dance troupe of several dancers
(all wearing Gucci
designed beach wear), on the shores of Jamaica, performing under the
tropical sun. A video
based around happy, go lucky Americans playing volleyball. Dieter doesn't
really look the

plastic surgery so
that he fitted in to what we expect is a reasonable music video.
The music should be dubbed over half-way through with Will-Smith rapping

1. You found Yello videos weak.
I personally don't care much for videos like some others. Not that I feel they
are weak in particular or lower the creative levels of a band, just that I'm
not interested. I generally throw my head back and close my eyes when I listen
to my CDs, which makes watching a video redundant.
2. ~will you stop to consider yourself as their fan?
Absolutely not. Not every album of ANY band that I own I found to my liking,
or liked at first. I usually do find at least one song exciting. But then,
it's what I personally like to hear. We are not necessarily judging Yello, but
really giving personal views and insight as to what others might want to
listen to.
3. What music (groups, genres) do you listen to except Yello?
Too many to list. Also any obscure or unsigned bands whose names I'll never
remember. My favorites are Yello, Art of Noise, the Orb, Peter Gabriel,
Tchaikovsky, really old JGeils Band, et al. FYI, I'm also on the Orb's list
(very, very busy) and last week a poll was taken for everyones 10 favorite
groups and honorable mention was given to Yello.
Have a swell day,

Maybe if either Boris or Dieter were caught "behaving improperly" with

3. Non Yello worship?

I think an 8 minute video of one of their greatest tracks would be
'essential' and worth losing one of the others on the video to accommodate.
What was this BBC video version re-edited from?
and Simon said:

Well, that's your opinion. I have become a great fan of his in the last
few years and find his talents totally to the fore at present. I agree his
musical direction has changed so much over 20 years, but I admire him
for doing so. He is truly one of UKs most talented. A true chameleon.
Yuri commented on my comparison to Peter Gabriel videos:
>Yes, but can you compare the budgets of the 2 videos?
I really don't think the problem was budgeting. I'm not suggesting
elaborate clay modelling shots all over the place. But if you're going
to set up loads of projectors and lighting effects and continually
use these track after track it smacks of unoriginality. Better to
shoot simple objects/scenes and edit/remix and make it interesting,
which did work well in some cases.

I'll have to say that Eleonore seemed pretty pointless in 'The Race' -
she just appeared in two short scenes, smiled and frowned a couple of
times and that was it. She had a much better part in 'Jungle Bill'... but
then she was 5-7 years older then.

In general, this is a good idea. I've discovered lots of new music
this way. I know I wish I was on music related mailing lists 10
years ago (actually it's getting close to 10 years that I've been on
this list...wow), when it was tough to find out about anything
outside the mainstream.
However, the suggestions on these lists still only serve as a
starting point for exploration, as the suggested groups rarely are
categorized or described as you have done. Often people just throw
out lists of groups with the implication that they're similar to the
group the list is focused on, yet often they aren't. Fortunately, now
that we have online music stores, it's possible to sample many of
the albums before buying.
What I'd like to see used is some way of verbally describing the
music, noting the genre, whether it has vocals or not, whether it is
sample heavy, electronic or acoustic, etc. as well as the name of a
few groups that this music is closest to. I'm sure one could develop
a sizable list of attributes used to describe the music in an
objective way, unlike the vague, subjective, and often flowery
writing style typically found in music reviews.
But I don't really expect list members to follow such a scheme. It's
too much work. I have a dream of some day classifying my own music
collection in this way and publishing it on the web...but like I
said, it's a lot of work.

There ain't no 8 minute video, "only" one for the single version
and one slightly longer for BBC. For Essential the longer one
was chosen. The BBC is edited, obviously, using the shorter
(single) version as a base. Claro? JW

Subject: (yello) Yello digest mode
A while ago I changed to the digest mode, but it proved to be =
unpractical.
Some days/weeks, only a few messages are sent to the list, and it seemed
that these few messages were collected over a period of several days and
only then sent out. Wouldn't it be better if the digest mode sent out =
any and
all messages every 24 hours? Be it one message or 20. In that way =
there's
no waiting for several days during periods of very few messages, before
they are sent out. Lazlo, can you arrange that? JW

I've got no poblem, since I've almost never seen a video that I think
fitted the song, no matter what artist. I make my own image of it when
I listen to the song.

No.

A lot of Swedish ones, but also U2, Depeche Mode, Art of Noise, Daft
Punk, Miles Davis, Primal Scream, plus extremely many more.
B.t.w. Olga, I really like your jokes. I must say that Russian humour
suits me fine!

Patricia Fontana, who also appeared in I Love You and Rubberbandman, and
sang (very briefly) in On The Run. I have also seen her first name spelt
'Patrizia'. I recall someone saying she was Boris' wife. If that isn't
right, I'm sure someone will send me a flame. ;-)

Subject: (yello) videos
It may seem to be strange but all Russian Yello fans that I know (including
me) love Yello videos a lot!
If you'd like to see "interesting" videos, I would advice you to get Army of
Lovers' videos. I'm sure some of you will enjoy it!
Best,
Olga
Today's joke:
The husband came back home and saw his wife lying on the bed. He opened the
door of the wardrobe and found strange man there. He was naked and holded the
fur-coat in his hands
H: Who are you?!
M: I'm a moth!*
H: But where do you carry my fur- coat?!
M: I will eat it at home!
* For those who doesn't know: the moth is a small insect living at homes and
eating some sorts of clothes
