>>>It may seem to be strange but all Russian Yello fans that I know
(including
me) love Yello videos a lot!
It's shame the 'To The Sea' and 'On Track' videos were not distributed
better. Maybe there will be another collection
in the future featuring these.
**BTW As @ 9.20a.m. 27/11/98 although I have recieved loads of queries
about the posters, *nobody* has made claim
to a reservation/conformation on any of these. Now is your chance!

I have a little thought, especially for all swedes here. I really like a
Swedish pop/rock artist. His name is
Anders Glenmark, for foreigners perhaps best known as the guitarplayer and
one of the producers on most of ABBA's
albums.
Anyway, I find that some of his work bears major 'inspired-of-yello' signs.
Has any of my Swedish Yello-soulbrothers/sisters here thought the same??
I'd be glad to upload some tracks somewhere to let You others listen aswell
(even if You cannot understand the lyrics - they suck most of the time
anyway...)

Subject: (yello) Artists and Videos
On the topic of music artists and music videos, and only focussing on
electronic-based artists (eg. Yello, Enigma, Deep Forest, Delerium,
Jarre, etc.), I must admit general disappointment. However there have
been some notable exceptions.
In terms of Yello, I only have their video compilation from the late
1980s (is it rare?) and was extremely disappointed. They looked cheap
and boring - it took a bit of my respect for their creativeness away.
For Enigma, "Return to Innocence" is a stand out, with a music video
that helps bind the content of the song together with visuals. For
those who haven't seen it, it contains lots of backward imaging (eg.
instead of seeing someone drop a ball from their hand onto the ground,
you see the ball going from the ground into their hand), and a
backward story line. The visuals are stunning. The general theme is
one of death going back to birth - the 'return to innocence'. If you
haven't seen this video, DO SO!!! Other Enigma videos are pretty good
too, but this one stands out.
For Deep Forest, their music videos are a bit of hit & miss. The
revised "Sweet Lullaby" music video was quite good with lots of things
happening, some nice visual seens. The rest of their videos are
straight forward.
For Delerium, their videos weren't too bad. I only saw ones from
"Semantic Spaces" though.
Unfortunately I have never seen ones for Jarre or Vangelis (if you're
in Australia and have some, contact me!). Anyway, thought I'd share my
thoughts.
Cheers,
Gavin Stok

I don't find their videos weak in the slightest (am I alone here?) I
used to hate those early eighties style videos like "Vienna" where
there's a "story" and the musicians pretend to be in a "film".. this
forces an interpretation onto a song so that when you hear it you think
about the stupid video where before you could use your imagination. A
prime case is Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" video, I loved that but now I
just think of Donald Sutherland and his weather machine.
Yello's vids are more like an extended record covers, a splash of
colour, some ideas, memorable images - a look. They're ok for what they
are intended to be - 3 minute adverts for a single. I enjoy the clowing
(usually) and like the way they look like they cost about 1000 dollars
each (and I like the little girl BTW).

Well, I thought Zebra was the worst but I stuck with it and was rewarded
with the wonderful PU.
> 3. What music (groups, genres) do you listen to except Yello?
The Residents, The Residents, Snakefinger, Coldcut, Scott Walker, Pulp,
Chrome, Renaldo and The Loaf, The Residents, Martin Denny, FSOL, Global
Communication, LTJ Bukem, Photek, John Barry, Throbbing Gristle, Primus,
Negativland, Brian Eno, Bowie up to '81, 9Lazy9, Luke Vibert, Fila
Brazillia, Steps, rubbish old Giorgio Moroder albums and, oh yes, The
Residents.

Quite like FSOL but I think the Art Of Noise are one of the most
overrated bands ever (though "Moments In Love" is ok)- when they were at
the bottom of the ladder farting around with silly samples of cars and
voices Yello were way up the top making sophisticated European techno
disco with the same equipment the AON were trying to master.

>1. You found Yello videos weak. But what did you expect from them? W=

While I think Yello are brilliant composers and musical talents, they
obviously have little imagination as film directors. I find all of t=
he
videos that I have seen to have similar imagery and repeat similar
styles. I would like to see videos that are more like an
artist-director responding to the music and drama of the individual
song; I've often thought about doing some myself for fun. I think th=
ey
just need a good director.
>2. If Yello release very poor, weak album (let's imagine it as a the=
ory),
>will you stop to consider yourself as their fan?
Nope. Not at all. I did refuse to buy Flag for several years because=
I
thought the singles I heard were impossibly weak. I finally broke do=
wn
and bought the vinyl used because I do consider myself a collector of
sorts. Zebra I hardly listen to either and Baby has some of the most
trite lyrics. But I held out as a fan and with Pocket Universe I was
very happy to see their compositional style of music making a return.
>3. What music (groups, genres) do you listen to except Yello?
There are other groups than Yello?
Um, from the same range of years (early 80s to present), my favs are =
The
Pogues, Dexys Midnight Runners, The Waterboys, Propaganda (of course)=
.=20
Outside of that range are B=FCdi Siebert, Jethro Tull, Doors, Janice
Joplin.

Subject: (yello) Olga's 3 Questions
Hello Yello Fellows
Olga posted:
1. You found Yello videos weak. But what did you expect from them? What kind
of videos did you suppose to see instead?
I hoped for a visual experience to match the audible experience. I had been
looking for a Yello video for a long time and was ultimately disappointed.
It appears from others, that all their videos are weak. But I'm still pleased
I have a visual record of the 'duo'.
2. If Yello release very poor, weak album (let's imagine it as a theory),
will you stop to consider yourself as their fan?
It's obvious from previous postings that many of you find one album or the
other to be weak (which must be the case with every artist) but we will
still buy them because we love the music in general and always remain fans.
I guess if they *really* changed direction (like being too pop orientated)
I may falter - but I doubt it.
3. What music (groups, genres) do you listen to except Yello?
Like others on this list my musical taste is very wide - from Vaughan
Williams to Prodigy. My other main music interest is with a US band from
the 70s called Little Feat. If you like country with a funky beat mixed
in with cajun and rhythym & blues then this band has the lot!
Others regularly in my CD player are: Led Zepplin (say no more!), Peter
Gabriel, Talking Heads, Art of Noise, Fluke (anyone heard of them?),
Deep Forest (although earlier CDs are much better IMHO), Frank Zappa,
Bonnie Raitt, Malcolm McLaren, Andreas Vollenweider.
Quite a varied mix don't you think?
James's postings as usual are wonderfully colourful, leaving lasting
images - your Will Smith's suggestion in particular made me LOL!
Olga - I did like your 'moth' joke but 'earms' left me totally
confused. Here's a couple for you. I hope you understand.
Two cannibals were eating a clown.
One says to the other "Does this taste funny to you?"
In the UK and the US people like to joke about lawyers quite a lot,
so please bear this in mind with.......
What do you have if there are 100 lawyers
buried up to their necks in sand?
Not enough sand!
Bye for now my friends,
Move...... Dance........ Be Born
Mike

Even if Yello have let us down on the music video front - perhaps we'll be
compensated
by the excellent movie that Dieter is still creating. As a fan, I'd be
really pleased if the film generated
interest in the band, even more pleased if the film became a classic! We
can only wait and see.
