Anybody have "Bars, Beats, and Loops" (I think that's the name) that they
could encode at a decently high bitrate and put up on the yello ftp server?
This is the disk that had all of the samples used for some songs on Zebra,
so you can mix your own...
Thanks!

<< BEFORE Oh Yeah >>
I used to do a college radio show (1982) playing now common stuff liem REM, U2
& Inxs. Whenever the DJ that followed wouldn't show on time, I'd put on a
record to intentionally annoy his hard rock listeners.
One time I grabbed "You Gotta Say Yes" & let it play on the side with the
title track. I'd never heard it before, nor any of the earlier releases. I was
hooked, the phones went crazy with people asking "Who is that?" A question
that has always been a pretty good barometer of listener interest.
What I'd give to have never heard Yello and stumble upon them.

FG

Whoaaaa-oaaaa-oooh there! This list is *not* serious enough? Are
Yello a po-faced shoe-gazing band? No! They like to have a good time,
and lots of their music is about having a good time. I don't want to
label my posts <joke included> and I don't want others to either!
Nuce to know you're a man of respectability and seriousness, James -
but this list is surely concerned with neither of those things! It's
working for Iceland that does it - all those big freezers have frozen
your emotional sensibilities!

Geez, seems like noone can agree on the qualities of Yello's albums...
Anyway, Here is a review of Zebra that Sweden's biggest Morning Paper,
'Dagens Nyheter' made of it
when it was released (I cut'em all out and put them inside the CD, if it is
a good review).
I translated it, just to be sure, if there happens to be someone without a
Swedish Dictionary...;)
"Yello is the synthduo whose sound differs from anything else, partly
because of their incredible wealth of ideas, partly because of their
surrealistic elegance. There is no stopping their breakneck ideas, they
have NO restraints whatsoever.
'Zebra(Mercury/Polygram)' is a digital trip around the globe through
techno, hornsections, djungledrums, indian meditationmusic, ambient techno,
reggae, bossa, moviesoundtracks, sampled mouthsounds, even more techno -and
then the strange recitations of Dieter Meier.
You cannot call him a singer, but he's a vocalist with unmistakeable
character. Always as faultlessly cool, no matter what the speed, and always
with a quiet smile in the corner of his mouth.
You Rarely get to listen to music as lustfully composed."
I also have one more review of Zebra from another Swedish mag -if anybody's
interested?
Pocket Universe did NOT get as good reviews...

Hi Yello fans,
Olga - your English is very good. I understood the joke first time!
And your comparison is correct. Don't worry about the 'guys' thing.
It's just another 'americanism' we europeans have picked up.
Perhaps we should be posting to 'guys and gals' (as Jimmy Saville used
to say - only UK fans may remember him!).
And judging by your later posting you took part in the discussion perfectly.
I'd like to contribute to your hobbie of jokes, but the only ones I have
at the moment are either too rude or in bad taste. Can anyone else help Olga?
James. You really are confusing me. Some of your recent postings, when challenged,
turn out to be jokes, and not to be taken seriously. If you're doing this to
stimulate discussion, it certainly seems to be working! I thought someone
was going to step in and referee between you and David at one point. I'm sure it's
all in the best possible taste. I look forward to your 'serious' and 'joke'
labels accompanying your posts in the future. Best wishes. Seriously!
And hey everyone. (notice Olga I didn't say guys!)

Interesting how so many different reviews come up with a wide range of
opinions. Some reviewers thought Zebra for
example was stifled and dated ; some thought it was brilliantly
adventurous. What was even more confusing was the
largely negative reviews of PU.
It seems that if the music is too conformist (ie. doesn't try anything new)
- - or if it is too disjointed it gets slated. For many
groups its a no win situation. Remember that reviewers themselves are an
entirely mixed bag - and maybe this is a healthy
thing - just as we all have our own opinions on Yello ; - it would be an
incredibly boring and tedious list if we all agreed.
Just like home, work or family life - *sometimes* conflict is good.

Hi people,

I read a lot of reviews of Zebra and PU in Russian press and noticed that
all these review thought Zebra was a brilliant album like all other Yello
albums. I haven't find any negative comments. Critics thought that Zebra is
a 'classical' Yello album.
What was even more confusing was the
>largely negative reviews of PU.
Yes, it's strange how tastes differ. Many reviews of PU in our press thought
that PU was a very good album although Yello did a lot of techno in PU (but
this techno was amazing). Some of them wrote that Yello haven't leave their
'usual' style in music (!) and ,on the other hand, they haven't repeated
themselves. Other reviews was negative. But most of all reviews I read
highly appreciated PU and thought that it was still brilliant Yello music.
>It seems that if the music is too conformist (ie. doesn't try anything new)

People always expect from Yello something new, something that noone used
before them. They didn't expect from them 'traditional music' which is
largely used by a lot of other musicians. This is a reason of these negative
reaction on PU and (in particular) Zebra. If any other groups play
traditional music, then noone would be disappointed in them!
>Just like home, work or family life - *sometimes* conflict is good.
If you're too bored of this life that for you sometimes conflict is good

>>Hey, I don't want to get political but I was referring to where conflict
can and does bring out a better situation. I don't
know how anybody could agree on any kind of conflict where the result made
things worse or had no reason. I was
thinking more about where conflict can make an overall situation better (or
in the case of this Yello list) more interesting.
Politcal and social situations on a country/nationwide basis is a different
issue in this sense, perhaps.
Also, I'm sure that political conflict can arise not from boredom, but
sometimes from neccessities brought on from the need
for basic resources - and certain places in Russia are perfect examples.
As for PU - I think Yello are on the right path. But I don't make the
mistake of thinking the music buying public will catch
onto Yello's style. I think it's too late now.

Okay, I admit it, 'Oh Yeah' was the first Yello song I ever heard, when it
was in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.' There was never a soundtrack made for
'Ferris,' so I had to pick a whole Yello CD. The choice was between
'Stella' and 'One Second' (BTW, does anyone know why 'Oh Yeah' is on both
albums?) Anyways, I bought my very first Yello album, 'Stella' at the ripe
old age of 14, and I've been hooked ever since.
If marijuana is a 'gateway drug,' then consider 'Oh Yeah' to be the gateway
drug to the addiction known as 'Yello.'

Just remember that I consider Zebra to their weakest album by Yello
standards, not musical standards :-).
Actually I like HowHow. My favourite track from Zebra is Suite 909, but
Night Train and Poom Shanka are not bad either.
My big let down on Zebra was the drums in "Fat City" which sound like an
almost exact copy of the drums from........ geeez brain meltdown, can't
remember the name of the track, but it's from a track from either Solid
Pleasure or Claro Que Si. I think it's "Rock Stop" from Solid Pleasure I'm
thinking of.

That's how I remember it aswell. Zebra got quite good reviews. In Sydsvenska
Dagbladet (the biggest paper in southern Sweden) The single "To the sea" got
an exelent review by Herbert Hintz (I think that's his name), but PU didn't.

can still order to me. ( not many... :-( )
But then guy from record store said that there is mention about new
single from PU. Release day will be December 1999. He also said that in
Yello case record company put release day far away, maybe it will be
released much earlier. Does anybody know what is this track?
And other record. There is mention about two different cd-copies of
Hardfloor remixes. One cdmx and one (cds)?
I have those 6 track cdmx and 3 track vinyl mx.
Is there also cardboard packed cds??? It was low price, that's why I
think it is cardboard packed cds.
If anyone can't give answers, I will later, after I recieve those new
stuff... :-)

Sure, I have some, I think. But they are NOT very positive. I cannot
remember reading
any Swedish review of PU that was positive, really... DESPITE Swedish Stina
Nordenstam on the album!
I'll get'em...

Subject: (yello) Critics...
Hoi Everyone!
For as far as professional reviews and the critics are concearned I
make it a rule "never" to pay attention to what they say.
This because I think there's no critic who can write a review that's
objective. It is and always will be an opinion touched by facts.
And I think I'm better qualified to do that personally for myself.
Maybe if I ever find a critic that has the same taste in music as I
have, I'll read his/her reviews, but concearning Yello (the main thing
in music) for example, I find it much more interesting and fullfilling
to hear what people on this list experience then to find out what
someone thinks that gets paid to tell me what he/she thinks.
Doesn't mean I can't see it as just another opinion, but a forced
one then. It's a bit of a pitty that critics have an influence on a lot of
people.
You can read, but have to decide for yourself...
Groeven,
Olaf.
Because the difference between good and bad music is the listener.

I heard "Vicious games" on Swedish radio 1985 and got interested, but
didn't find any album. About a year later I heard "Goldrush" and also
bought "You gotta say yes to another excess" and was absolutely stunned.
I still love their pre-1990-albums the most, but I'm aware of that I've
got a lot of nostalgic memories with those albums...

Hi,
My name is Greg VIALLE, I'm French and I'm new in this mailing list and I=
'm
happy to know that I'm not the only foul fo Yello on this planet !
Yello and me is a long and wonderful story - I'll try to tell you it with=
my
small knowledge of English...
The first time I heard about Boris & Dieter, it was with the hit The Race=
...
A friend of my father lent him the tape of Flag because of the same song =
and
it was my favorite too with Of Course I'm Lying, Otto Di Catania and Tied
Up. I don't know why (maybe the na=EFvety of kids), I thought that it was=
the
only album they made !!! 2 years later, in a little German report, I hear=
d a
music which very sounds like Yello style (good melody with funny instrume=
nt)
and the next day I went to my music store and decided to buy the ESSENTIA=
L
to know if it was... I found the track (Jungle Bill) but a lot of I ever
heard too... I can remember me singing on Vicious Games (I was 10) and
remember the French commercials of Levis with Bostich... Some mounths lat=
er,
I bought the complete list of the albums and now Yello is my favourite
group. Baby was the last I bought, but certainly my favourite. My favouri=
te
tracks are first Desire and She's Got A Gun. I'm always looking for Blue
Nabou who was used in a French commercials of Orangina (drink) and I woul=
d
like so much to hear it again.
Now... It's sure that Zebra and Pocket Universe are a little bit detached=
of
the Baby style but I think Yello had to up one notch in music because of =
the
tendances and they have accepted the challenge with brilliance I think.
GREG.

With the exception of Tremendous Pain, I agree.
