  12. how did everyone like the Voyager set?

  14. 1. Damaged cards---oodles...yuck
  15. 2. Orange variation glow edge..whatever, but what a shame a so- so card will end up being the most sought after.
  16. 3. Lenticulars-nice, though their isn't much MOTION, good 3-D
  17. 4. Oversized lenticulars-even awesome 3-d effects (being a dealer is coooooool, all sorts of neat stuff shows up in my box...:giggle:)

  50. 1. Decipher's Rules of Acquisiotn is out, so look for it!
  51. 2. Twilight Zone....for those who collect Trek related cards, this set has
  52. several Shatner cards. i make mention of it cause one card, the S-1, makes
  53. mention of Shatner as Cptn Kirk. I'll be scanning it for the web site
  54. soonly.
  55. 3. Decipher's ST Anthology II is due out *soon*
  56. 4. Voyager CLoser to Home has three 'promos' oversizedlenticulars of
  57. Chakotay, Janeway and 7 of 9. Back says Promo 1 2 or 3 of 3. THese were
  58. given to dealers as a 'thanks'/reward for ordering their product.

  174. Hello All.
  175.      Months ago, when I wrote my parody "Voyager Closer to Pointless," I
  176. had no idea how close to the mark I would hit.  While it's a tad away
  177. from the usual Trek Trade fare, I thought I'd throw my 5 cents on this
  178. new set out there.
  179.      First off, this little commentary is all SkyBox is getting from me
  180. on Voyager Closer to Home.  I'm currently boycotting their new products
  181. until they start letting out their Voided Game cards as they did ever so
  182. briefly (which was wonderful for dealers who knew about it, but horrible
  183. to collectors who found out about it too late), which supports the
  184. business practice of dealers selling the cards for hundreds of dollars
  185. (an act they say they are against).  So, this critique is the only thing
  186. of mine SkyBox gets for this set, not a penny more!
  187.      I took a look at the set.
  188.      Point 1 - Am I the only one who noticed how poorly this set was
  189. assembled?  It begins with card #178, which corresponds to . . .
  190. nothing.  It's a random starting point.  Before you jump down my throat
  191. with "It's supposed to follow up on Voyager Season 2," lets look at that
  192. series.  The common cards end with number 190 or 202 after all of the
  193. chase cards.  No matter what universe you're in, 178 does not rationally
  194. follow either 190 or 202.  For those of you who say "177 is the last
  195. episode card," I conceed that, however even with the TNG episode
  196. collection, all of the cards go in order, including checklists and
  197. murals.  SKYBOX screwed up.
  198.      Point 2 - Outside of the numbering, the common card set is messed
  199. up.  Did you notice how many common cards

  213.      That's the point.  Many of the common cards are cut off.  They don't
  214. finish their last sentences.  This happens on AT LEAST six cards.  There
  215. was more written, it didn't make it onto the card and no one bothered to
  216. double check the cards.
  217.      Point 3 - Redemption cards.  I've said it before and I'll say it
  218. again.  Any SkyBox set that requires redemption cards for the autographs
  219. was released too soon.  Better to delay the set and have it all there
  220. than put it out prematurely and incomplete.  It pains me that the Deep
  221. Space Nine Memories From the Future set had so very many redemption
  222. cards.
  223.      Point 4 - Promotional Lenticular set.  Dealers were given oversized
  224. lenticular cards.  If you're into completeing the whole set, there's
  225. another $450+ if you want to try to complete the whole set.  What,
  226. dealers couldn't believe in lenticular?  They couldn't remember what
  227. they were from earlier sets?
  228.      Point 5 - No Guarantees.  Did you look over the box?  Sure, it says
  229. that there's a Command Card or and Autographed card in each box
  230. (remember hearing that in other series' and get a box without?), but
  231. there's no guarantee.  There's no guarantee that you'll get a complete
  232. common set even.  The point is, SkyBox is going down on customer
  233. service.
  234.  
  235.      There are so many things about this set (poor research, poor
  236. execution, rushed date, lack of guarantees) that reinforce the idea that
  237. SkyBox doesn't give a damn about the collector, instead being out to
  238. make a buck.  The only thing this set seems to do right (in my opinion)
  239. is having autographs only from central characters (even if two of them
  240. are redemption cards).
  241.      So far, the best set SkyBox has made since starting the whole
  242. autograph cards is Star Trek The Next Generation Season 7 - the only set
  243. that pretty much guarantees that if you bought a case, you got
  244. everything or the ability to get everything.  One promo, one super chase
  245. card (the Captain's card), attainable holograms, attainable chase, well
  246. assembled set, actual autographs and a guarantee they gave even though
  247. they didn't mean to.
  248.      Just my opinion.  If you're paying out lots of money trying to get
  249. the whole Orange vs. Green alien set, maybe it should be yours as well.

  496. such a fit about Voy Season two that they weren't a weeeee bit more careful
  497. about it. Heck, even Collect wrote an article voicing their (and our)
  498. opinions on how it should be addressed and I don't think this was on

  524. Hey pay the actors good money and get a contract. They need to crack down on
  525. them better. Look at Berman..they should sued him for breach of contract,
  526. and NEVER inserted him into packs.

  535. Actually, (not that it matters) these cards are wrongly labeled promos since
  536. they were sent to dealers AFTER the release. They were incentives to order
  537. more product. Obviously, since I got them, I am not going to tender an
  538. opinion on whether or not they should be given out since I have a biased
  539. view. There is something to be said for offering dealers cool stuff..happy
  540. dealers stock their product. OTOH, I think in fairness to collectors why not
  541. send them EXTRA stuff found in packs rather then an exclusive NEW stuff. For
  542. most of the TNG episode series, dealers got holos. This messes up the odds a
  543. bit since they are more common then 1:90. But at least collectors had other
  544. options for finding the cards then relying on the dealers to sell 'em.
  545. Levels the playing field a wee bit.

  555. Yup, I think it's a mistake not to offer a guarantee. Sky Box didn't
  556. guarantee for TNG 7, but did it anyway, which was a smart move on their
  557. part, I have not yet tested them on this product. They also have not
  558. responded to my concerns over the number of damaged cards.

  560.      Just my opinion.  If you're paying out lots of money trying to get

  564. I hate the orange subset as well (as a collector) I don't' like them enough
  565. to wanna chase after them.

  568. All in all I find it very unlikely we will ever find the perfect set.
  569. Various opinions on how difficult or expensive a set is to collect will
  570. always arise. We are currently in a position where we are unlikely to have
  571. complete collections. Not many can afford it and though I am not exactly
  572. *proud* of it, so to speak, it seems with out some access, whether through
  573. dealer status or whatever, some stuff is almost hopeless. I still think we
  574. can continue to collect, finding limits and accepting holes. Something I
  575. know is hard, we non--sport collectors are nothing if not anal about
  576. completionism. And it is not something we can necessarily blame SkyBox for
  577. for making it tough to put sets together, they are a business to make money.
  578. Making us dole out the buck and buy lots more product then before is the
  579. bottom line for them What is NOT acceptable is shoddy work, poor research
  580. and or editing, damaged cards or collation issues. I am more then willing to
  581. spend money on a product, even expensive, if it is well thought out,
  582. creative, fun and nice to look at.  If I think they are thinking of me the
  583. collector then I am supportive of it. Lately, I think tossing out a product
  584. is the only goal, I am dissatisfied with where their heart is at and it
  585. won't much hurt my feelings if it's the last one.
  586. I HAVE been very pleased, for the most part, with the people at Customer
  587. Support at SkyBox. I haven't yet heard from them on the damaged cards
  588. issues, but up to this point, I have never walked away dissatisfied with
  589. whatever issues I have brought to them and on occasion they're going a step
  590. beyond. I have not been satisfied with their willingness, in the creative
  591. team, to open communication with collectors and keep us current and tell us
  592. the tidbits we like to hear. That continues to be a complaint of mine.

  629. Well, my Closer to Home boxes say of every side of the box "Autographed or
  630. lenticular card in every box." They do not use the word "Guaranty," but that
  631. sounds like a guaranty to me. At least that is advertising that says what is in
  632. the box. What was different about TNG 7 was that it just said 1:36, rather than
  633. 1 in every box. Looking back at earlier boxes, they used the same 1 in every box
  634. language, with saying it was guarantied.

  721. As I've said many times before, I stopped getting new sets after the 30th
  722. Anniversary set came out, so I won't speak to the details surrounding
  723. W.L.'s dissatisfaction.  But I would like to offer something to think
  724. about.  Perhaps many of you have heard that Playmates decided NOT to
  725. produce any more Trek figures after this year?  I believe Galoob also
  726. dropped the line (that may be incorrect - P'Mount might have pulled their
  727. license) quite a while ago.  Yes, Hallmark made the "Trek stamp" for this
  728. year, but I think that's more of a "Post Office" item than a Trek item
  729. (from their point of view).  My point is that, especially since DS9 stopped
  730. production, a lot of Trek licensees have decided to drop out of the Trek
  731. rat race.  Personally, I think a lot of licensees were disappointed in the
  732. sales volume of most of their items compared to the licensing costs, but I
  733. may just be making that up.  And I'm not saying that it's all P'Mount's
  734. fault.  Everybody and his brother/sister wanted to have trek on their
  735. products.  The collector market has been over-saturated for years.
  736. "Limited Edition" means even less than "Exclusive" nowadays BECAUSE of Trek
  737. products.  The point is that, IF Skybox is getting out of the Trek
  738. busainess (and I think that's very likely), then they can cut their losses
  739. by doing some of the things you're all talking about in this thread.

  745. produced years ago, even though it's now known that it was an incomplete
  746. set?  As an example, wouldn't you like to have a Mego 8 inch "Gorn" in your
  747. figure collection, even knowing the chances of getting the "Mugato" and
  748. "Romulan" are slimmer than "none"?  Of course you would.  The difference
  749. with trading cards is that we know while they're still being sold in boxes
  750. that the sets are next-to-impossible to complete and it just ticks us=

  764. I think we can blame them a little!  Just like we can blame any seller of
  765. any item where they take advantage of a situation by claiming to satisfy a
  766. need (our desire to complete sets) but then don't bother to fulfill it.

  857. Yeah, but realistically speaking, that's true of every avenue of collection,
  858. there will always be some version of something in our collecting, whether
  859. cards or toys that we can't get our hands on or don't even know is out
  860. there, but we MIGHT and it's the MIGHT that keeps me collecting. I take the
  861. opposite opinion, if I KNOW I can have it all, in advance, what fun is there

  888. This astounds and maybe even saddens me (I am in too much of a chocolate
  889. craving mood to be in total touch with my feelings right now)
  890. I a few months ago, I commented on the loss of Beckett Non Sports
  891. Magazine....Collect.....all but NSU(and the wrapper) Today while shopping, I
  892. discovered that Beckett has a magazine out....a POKEMON magazine...imagine!
  893. First of all, my family is a Pokefamily. We all (children and adults) enjoy
  894. Pokemon at various levels from obsession (Kristen) to fond tolerance. We saw
  895. the movie (and all of us cried), we know our various POkemon and such, and
  896. have misc. collectibles in our home. But, I find it sad that we can not
  897. maintain a few magazines based on the whole line of nonsports.
  898. One ad was for one of the grading companies, grade your Pokemon cards.
  899. Oddly, I had been contemplating that we in non sports don't' seem to go for
  900. the card grading professionals. I myself don't know of anyone who has graded
  901. a non sports card from PSA and SCGC or whoever. Seems as though they figured
  902. they'd missed us, so they'd get a new crowd......
  903. Still, it seems a shame that we have been tossed aside. These kids that are
  904. so into pOkemon could be a generation to encourage to grow up with a love of
  905. collecting in general, but if we separate out those collectors from the rest
  906. of the crowd, how will we ever introduce ourselves...;)

  1202. OK, having sat down to sort sets for Rules of Acquisition, I have to say I'm
  1203. a tad disappointed...collation bites.....
  1204. I opened 6 boxes, made ONE set, 3/3rd of a second, maybe half of a third.
  1205. What I have dupes of most everyone else does as well, making trades harder.
  1206. Sorta like TOS Card Game Starfleet Maneuvers. got to be we all needed the
  1207. same 3 or 4 cards. Rares, not even VRs.....
  1208. In this case, what's more amazing is the uncommon...it took me 4 boxes to
  1209. finally finish out three sets of commons and uncommons. I wouldn't think it
  1210. should be that hard......

  1488. of my trading buddies for granted. We tend to do business with the same
  1489. people over and over and it gets to a point where there aren't any issues or
  1490. worries of getting ripped off. I extended a trade offer to someone off the
  1491. Decipher boards, one card for one card, either worth more then $2 max. He
  1492. requested references so I sent a few (6 or 7 I think) he wrote back saying
  1493. since I didn't have 10 references I would have to send first. I replied that
  1494. I had easily 10, that I had only SENT 7 since I didn't know there was a
  1495. requirement in how many I sent. I resent more, but was terribly annoyed
  1496. about the whole thing.
  1497. Are there established 'etiquettes' for trade. I mean, if 10 was what he
  1498. wanted, he might have mentioned it. How paranoid is one supposed to be about
  1499. a $2 card?
  1500. I also have a problem with sending a stranger emails addresses, should we
  1501. establish in advance people who are willing to vouch for us or is it ok with
  1502. most people to have strangers email them asking for references without
  1503. advance notice? The thing is when the conversation gets to that point, I
  1504. think about GAB which I have chosen not to be involved in it, I get tons of
  1505. requests from GAB for references requests and it can take a good chunk of
  1506. time to respond to them all. Maybe I need to set up a page on my web site,
  1507. sort like a review of a book..."She's a true trader" that I can add to my
  1508. sig file for people to 'check me out'? Sheesh...ebay feedback ,trade
  1509. references...... Maybe I wont trade with strangers and avoid the whole mess.

  1615. the same way people do it for Job references.  I've talked to a few people
  1616. and asked them for general permission to use them as a ref, then I just let

  1619. person first and ask their permission, then give their info to the=
  1620.  requestor.

  2074. that's about how much I paid for mine. To me $60-$80 is what the card is
  2075. worth. I hope the guy that paid $250 for the same card never sees the
  2076. one that went for $32. Id be a bit upset. On the other hand I did pick
  2077. up an Insurrection A1 on eBay not to long ago for $10. So I guess it's
  2078. all relative. How do you do a price guide when you really don't know how
  2079. much people are actually paying for certain cards. You would have to ask
  2080. everybody you know how much they paid for it and average it out. I can
  2081. see you setting up a web site where you can input how much you paid for
  2082. a certain card and it would update automatically. That would be cool.
  2083. But everybody on gods green earth would have to input there price they
  2084. paid for it to be accurate. Which is impossible. So the question is how
  2085. do you figure out this unseen variable. What kind of equation would you
  2086. use.

  2217. but realise they are limited.  I've been thinking about it and my solution

  2396. Well, then it isn't a "price guide" but a rarity guide.  I'm not defending
  2397. this, but the US is a capitalistic system.  Any reference to the fact that
  2398. some people can pay more than others for the same item is "outside" the
  2399. system<G>.  A Capitalist only wants to know "what the market will bear".
  2400.  
  2401. Also, I wanted to comment on the first statement below.  It's correct that
  2402. you cannot create an accurate price guide without knowing what people are
  2403. actually paying for an item.  That is what a price guide implies that it
  2404. is.  And that's what I was saying (VERY long ago in this discussion) is
  2405. simply NOT gonna happen.  You just can't get an accurate report on what
  2406. "everyone" is paying for an item.  You can't identify all the buyers to ask
  2407. them, so you have to ask the sellers.  The sellers have a personal agenda
  2408. to raise the "perceived value" of the item, so they lie about what it is
  2409. selling for.  No price guide can ever hope to be accurate using this
  2410. technique, but it's the only technique that can provide any results at all.

  3102. Ann and I saw Galaxy Quest last night.  I won't say anything about the plot
  3103. because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that I was
  3104. extremely surprised in a good way.  I went to see this film more out of a
  3105. sense of duty to my hobby, sci-fi.  I was hoping it wouldn't suck too much.
  3106.  Well, it doesn't suck at all.  In fact, it's a really good film.  For me,
  3107. it was an out-and-out parody of Trek - not just the series, but the whole
  3108. Trek phenomenon, including the personalities of the actors (when I say
  3109. Trek, I'm speaking mostly of TOS, here, although there are touches of later
  3110. incarnations, as well).
  3111.  
  3112. It's a Dreamworks production with effects being handled by ILM and
  3113. Skywalker Sound, but they MUST have subcontracted Sigourney Weaver's
  3114. bustline to "Foundation Imaging"<G>.  Yes, I remember her shape from
  3115. "Alien", but she has never had a bustline like this... never!!!
  3116.  
  3117. Tim Allen was exceptional.  Eric Colantonio was terrific as the leader of
  3118. the naive Aliens and the costuming/makeup/effects that wotked together to
  3119. produce the head meany were outstanding.  In fact, all the effects were
  3120. 'way more than I expected.  They went all out on this film, cutting no
  3121. corners anywhere.  There was one small scene where I think the editor took
  3122. some shortcuts or fell asleep at the switch, but the landing in the parking
  3123. lot more than makes up for it.  If I HAVE to find a gripe it's that Tony
  3124. Shaloub was underutilized.  Otherwise, this is a movie every SF fan (and
  3125. especially all Trekkies) should be sure to see...  at least once.

  3310. currently there is even a pair up for sale, opening bid of $3.99.

  3312. promo card geek.  And if you are a promo card geek, you gotta have both

  3317. one. and if course I HADDA have one, though I confess I didn't lose any
  3318. sleep until I found one but I feel that happy satisfied ahhhhhh feeling to

  3425. I vote for variant for the mentally obsessed. (Of course, that includes most
  3426. of us, or we wouldn't be spending so much money on these little pieces of
  3427. cardboard.)  As long as one contains everything the other does and more, I
  3428. would want the greater and would not consider the lesser to be something
  3429. different for the purpose of completing a collection.
