I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but it was good! All the girls looked really good, Micheal and Max's hair on the other hand... (but they are still gorgeous) Not seeing Kyle was disappointing- I really wanted to see how he acted around the others now. Oh well, hopefully that will happen next week. Possible questions: What was your impression of Tess in this episode? The "mind warp" was too funny. I thought she was very earnest in her desire to be valuable to Max and not let him down. Nice to know her gift has limits though. Is it me, or was Isabel seriously getting into this whole winning the war thing? She went from being determined to ignore her alien side in the season one, to wearing 'battle leather' and running recon on the geologist. I'm seriously going to miss Nasedo. Nearly every truly funny line in this episode came from him. On a more serious note, I'm glad to see there are friendships building outside the conventional couples. Max and Maria obviously had a good time hanging out over the summer and have come to rely on each other. Michael has a father figure in Valenti, though that's not acknowledged yet. Writers haven't worked too hard to make me like her yet. She just seemed a little desperate to get Max's approval. It will be interesting to see if the writers invest more time in her character. Seeing an actual person who told them she was their mother made a big impact on Iz, I think. She can't confide in her earth mother, so I think she's holding this image on a pedastal of this alien mother who will truly be everything she wants. The day Max healed liz started everything. There's been a lot of speculation on the boards about the Tess/Max/Liz triangle, and lots of people have wondered if Max & Tess might become intimate as part of this whole Destiny thing. Several people have indicated they would stop watching the show if that happened and bemoaned the destruction of the Max/Liz relationship in that scenario. Obviously lots of people would be crushed over it, but many think that Max/Liz would still eventually get back together. But very few people, if any, seem to consider how this all might affect Tess. Look at it from her point of view. What if you finally got the man of your dreams (perhaps in her case literally), you slept together, and then he leaves for another woman? Hell, what about simply telling them the NAME of this home world? Yeah, the idea of Nasedo and the Congresswoman was a bit icky, simply because Nasedo was such a lech about it. The only reason for telling the Six and the viewers about it was to let us all know that sex between humans and aliens is quite possible. But Maria caught on pretty quick to the implications of that with her birth control comment--maybe Nasedo couldn't impregnate a woman because he was fully alien, but Max & Michael certainly could. I watched the season premiere last night, anticipating it like all you guys. I have to say though, even though I still love the show, I was kinda let down. First off, I must say that everyone looked great, with the exemption of Brendan and majandra's hair. I thought Shiri and Kate looked really pretty, per usual and the guys looked really hot too. Jason has done such wonderful things with his character...so subtle. Such a great change from the beginning of last season silent always looking at the floor whenever he walks in to the room...poor Michael hasn't gone anywhere...he is the same ol' rebellious Michael...seems to be out for his own good. I am not saying I don't like Michael because I do...he is a good antagonist for Max. Always challenging him. With Iz in the middle trying to even them out. In random order: 1) I hate both Maria's and Michael's hair - and what was up with her 70's chick makeup? Terrible. 2) Tess was far more tolerable - nigh on likable, though I was still gratified that Max isn't even considering being with her. And Nasedo was actually very amusing, and I hated him last year! I also have to agree with whoever said that the "Agent Pierce" body was hot when he was trying to seduce the congresswoman. :) 3) The scenes of Max/Nasedo and Michael/Valenti were interesting. There was a "father/son" dynamic with both sets (though somewhat distorted in the M/N set) that I wouldn't have expected, and the Mi/V scene was particularly touching - Valenti seemed very understanding of Michael's feelings, and Michael really opened up to him. 4) I don't know why people are so annoyed by Courtney - she was just acting like a normal person as far as I can tell, and while she did flirt with Michael, he didn't seem to respond at all (aside perhaps from simply noticing that she was flirting with him). Maria's jealousy was cute. 5) Grant is not all that cute, though he seemed nice enough. He didn't seem to be really interested in Isabel in that way, though she definitely was - the age difference, no doubt. 6) Isabel seems a lot more secure in herself, despite the alien's relative lack of knowledge about what needs to be done. 7) Where the heck did this "king" and "royal four" thing come from? It must have been established during the summer - perhaps Nasedo told them that. 8) Loved the Maria / Max friendship thing they had going on - despite the romantic problems, Maria and Alex obviously grew closer to Max and Isabel over the summer. Michael, on the other hand, seems to be growing farther apart. Tess has obviously not bonded with anyone except POSSIBLY Michael, though even they didn't seem close. She was almost pathetic, trying to get Max's approval with hiding him from the people at the lab. 9) Both the deputy and the congresswoman seemed rather cartoonish to me. 10) Where the heck was Kyle?!? 11) Plot holes. The Physics class thing bothered me, as did the quick switch from "maybe it's going to this lab" to "it's definitely going to be at this lab tomorrow" - when did they get confirmation? The congresswoman was a little too sure that aliens were involved, and the deputy always had the EXACT worst thing to say at any given moment. And the big one - I'm sorry, but carbon dating can only establish the age of items within a range of thousands of years - not even within decades, much less enough precision to say "42 years"! All in all, I give the episode mixed reviews. It certainly setup the upcoming year well, but at times the writing didn't seem up to its normal standard, and sometimes the show simply didn't feel like "Roswell". There were, however, a number of scenes that gave me hope, so I'm reserving judgement until next week. Band camp?? Who = knows. I missed him = too. I really hated the = fact that they didn't address it...I know it was 2-3 months later for them...but what = about us?? The Physics = class thing bothered me, as did the quick switch from "maybe it's going to this = lab" to "it's definitely going to be at this lab tomorrow" - when did they get = confirmation? Some of that has got to be hair extensions though- (hair don't grow that fast!) 2) I found it interesting that Max ruled over Nasedo... then when Micheal wanted to talk to Nasedo, Nasedo was mad because Max didn't okay it. 3) Why isn't it possible to orb Nasedo back again- they will probably have his body 4) I wonder what Courtney's purpose is- is she someone to use to show that they are hiding their secret from people?? is she going to find out about there secret and join the gang (I don't think so), or is she a "bad person" who is part of the skins? 5) What are the skins? Although, Michael's looks more like the 'bad hair' of the 60's where men just didn't know how to wear their hair long. But gosh, was it cool. :) Whether Majandra is wearing extensions or not, I liked the change a lot. Maybe it's some subconscious sexist notion of my own, but I think women tend to look better with longer hair. More importantly, perhaps it's not only a change in her appearance, but her character as well? Maybe Maria's eccentricity will be subdued this season, so that may account for the absence of the short, sometimes odd-ball colored hair. I guess we'll see... 2) Royal Four and Authority Figures Interesting situation here as well, and I think it helps to have our pod squad in some kind of important role. It helps give the plot and story arc for the season some kind of drive, especially seeing how what it had built up so carefully last season was cut and wrapped up in basically one episode. The only thing I would have changed, regarding this one point, was to introduce the congresswoman a little more slowly, possibly even prolonging the mission of dismissing any suspicions people may have had regarding those bones. I noticed some complaints about the congresswoman and the sci-fi aspects, questioning its plausibility. The only thing that really bothered me, was the congresswoman not being with familiar with carbon dating. Is there anyone here that doesn't know what carbon dating is? I'm sure it's something that is taught in 5th or 6th grade everywhere. At any rate, I know there have been advances in this field, but whether bones (or even wood, another common object for carbon dating) can be dated to the closest decade -- much less to the closest year -- is hardly believable, so I'd agree with the people who commented similar arguments to this effect. At best, they could have said the bones were within one century of the current date. Various bacteria and other factors go into this process, and can disrupt the results. Just do a search on any web site about the Shroud of Turin, and you'll see all kinds of controversy regarding the carbon dating of this material. Although I don't know for sure, I would also imagine that if an object was exposed to radio activity, carbon dating certainly could not be even close to exact. Considering that this congresswoman clearly has too much time on her hands, and the fact that the congresswoman was talking to Pierce much earlier on (which doesn't make sense if the S.U. was so secretive), leads me to believe that she's an alien hunter and will be the main antagonist in the story for at least the next couple of episodes, and probably for the rest of the season despite the introduction of the 'skins.' In other words, I don't think she's going to become a 'friendly,' as Sheriff Valenti turned out to be. 3) Relationships I think it's one of the main reasons we watch this show, so it's worth a mention. If the Special Unit disbandment was being aired on C-Span, it would seem to me that Liz knew about the congresswoman, at least some kind of limited role with Pierce, and knew what it would mean to work with the congresswoman. That didn't seem to fall into place correctly; Liz made it sound like it was simply an excellent opportunity for her, and helping the Pod Squad was an after thought. Yes, the Maria/Michael was the same old song, but I wonder about the 'good in bed' comment. Was it implied that they slept together at some point last season? I just found it odd. So why does she keep trying, when Michael keeps pushing her away? I think the new girl's name is Courtney (Sara Downing?), and if I'm not mistaken, was in a motion picture recently. This could account for her suddenly being thrust in the forefront of our tight-knit group. In any case, looks like her and Michael may have some kind of future together. Is this the same girl that was in the back of the truck with Kyle last season? Another introduction was made with this geologist guy and Isabel. Clearly Isabel has taken a liking to him, and who wouldn't take a liking to Isabel? What the scoop is on him, I don't know. But in both cases, it should offer more possible relationship-related storylines other than what could have gotten stale from last season. Another pet peeve: why did the geologist walk all the way into the Crashdown Cafe, towards the back where Isabel and Alex were seated? You'd think there would have been plenty of other people outside or along the way that he could have asked. Just a production error, or did the geologist specifically seek her out with this information? As far as everyone's relationship with Nasedo; it is curious that our gang didn't apparently learn more about their past, their planet, and who they really are. At least, nothing more than their royal past. You'd think this would have been some of their first and most important questions. I guess we're to assume that because he wasn't 'Ward Cleaver,' he wasn't around enough to divulge much information about their past. I was glad to see Michael and Valenti together, freely expressing themselves; as some others mentioned, I also think it's good for Michael, and he probably does see Valenti as a father figure that he's so desperately needed throughout his childhood. 4) Destiny and the Future Interesting that Max was not able to bring Nasedo back to life (assuming he is indeed dead, and I think he is.) It would seem that the 'skins' have a force stronger than our gang, or perhaps that Max's powers simply doesn't work on alien life. Whatever the case, I'm also curious why the 'Skin' that observed Michael overseeing the crime scene didn't kill him as they did Nasedo? I would assume it's because they don't know who Michael is (just yet), if Nasedo did a good job at keeping the Pod Squad hidden. That's all the time I have for now, but overall, I'd give the show 3.5 stars out of 5. I found it pretty entertaining, despite some of the errors and holes in the story. Naturally it didn't hold its weight against last year's premier, but it's probably unfair since 'Roswell High' (pilot) was the series premier. But Kyle may be trying to 'accept what you cannot change' and if he does develop a relationship with Tess, then maybe he and his father won't ever reach a real crisis. Here's my wondering: How long is it going to take before we get a climax to the Max/Michael situation? It's annoying to watch these two battling for supremacy and demanding that Isabel choose sides. And hey, you know, maybe they shouldn't be leaving Tess out of the decision-making. Of the four of them, she seems to have the best grasp of her powers and their history. In common with several other firms, they don't declare exact shipping costs for overseas customers ordering from their site, but you're allowed to chose shipping method to get some sort of control over the cost. The trading cards, which weigh 12 grammes, were sent in a huge cardboard box weighing 385 grammes, and the postage charged, instead of being a sensible amount for a tiny packet or envelope, was more than $15. The Customs declaration was completed with a value of $50 even though I paid $19.95 for the cards - the company later explained that these cards were a 'special deal' and that their real value was $50, so it would have been wrong to declare the actual cost on the label - an absolute lie on their part, to cover their mistake. As a result of the inflated value on the declaration, I incurred a =A37 ($12= ) Customs Duty charge. When I challenged the company to explain what they had done, they absolutely completely totally LIED about EVERYTHING. The stupid packing of my cards, and the consequent absurd postage charge, was never explained but they tried to cover their mistake by claiming that the postage I had been charged also covered another order (for more Farscape rubbish) still outstanding - they claimed it was all part of one order, and that as a matter of policy they charged the whole amount of postage on outstanding orders with the first one despatched. It was too much for them to just say, 'Sorry, we made a mistake, we'll give you a credit against the postage charge on your outstanding order'. When I wrote and complained about all this, I received the most STUNNINGLY patronising messages back, just unbelievably rude and arrogant, lying rubbish. Another example: each mail claimed that they had tried to phone me, but my 'caller listing' service records every incoming call whether I answer it or not, and there weren't *any* incoming International or unidentified calls that could possibly have been them trying to call. I'm usually a sweet, kind, temperate person (most of the time, honestly) but on this occasion their bad practice made me thoroughly angry, so I'm writing this to WARN everyone: you deal with this dreadful company at your peril. Sorry to be a misery, but I wouldn't want you to have the same rotten experience I did with these horrible people. Colin. Isabel was initially her friend, yes, until she found out just who Tess was, and then she put up the distance. Max has always been uncomfortable around Tess because of the whole Liz scenario. If I had to pick, I'd say that Michael would be the alien Tess has seemed the closest to. She was helping him with his powers in "Skin and Bones", and last year it was to Michael that Tess was appealing to the most in order to get to Max and Isabel because Michael was the one more concerned with the whole alien side of him. It seems those two sort of have the 'outsider' status going on. I think Isabel was the one who picked up the flashes about what was going on with Tess, because while Max and Michael have more of a physical power, the girls seem to have the more mental powers with Isabel's dreamwalking and Tess's ability to sort of 'blur reality' and make people see things that aren't there. There might be some sort of psychic connection between the girls. But I don't think Isabel has completely warmed up to Tess . . it's more simply the fact that she's one of them and she knows they've gotta stick together. But I have a thing for uniforms... so I won't go there! Everyone else looked great too. I thought it was kind of strange to use the characters to pretend to be people from 1947, but I liked it. About the 4 missing pods, they will probably eventually find them, it they weren't killed. I guess we know now what the aliens from their planet look like now, not in human form! It was also sweet of Micheal to bring Maria to see the grenalith (but ignoring a million of her calls was not). It seems like they are giving each of the character an episode based more on them (last week- Katherine, this week- Brendan, and next week Max going into the future). I also enjoyed when Micheal told the retired army guy that he actually helped and saved him, and showed him some powers. Micheal is getting much better in the power compartment, especially since last year. Turning root beer (or whatever it was) into beer, and lighting a match on his finger. Thats not just just throwing people around. Tess probably helped him over the summer. We didn't see much of the normal characters, but a lot of Micheal so I loved it! The only thing that felt a little off, was the hug between Michael and the 'old guy.' Both personalities just didn't feel right for it. Still, I think we were all a little worried last week about this gimmick episode, but I think it was probably the only story of the season that was well structured. I also recognized many of the character names and events that are supposed to have really happened in 1947. If there wasn't a disclaimer, there probably should have been one. Some of you may know that I live in Fort Worth, Texas, and that's where the reporter from the Star Telegram came into play; the 'bodies' of the whatever the crash victims were, supposedly came to Carswell Air Force Base, not far from where I live. Although this area is built up today, I suspect that could make sense, as this area was probably fairly secluded, not to mention only day's driving distance from Roswell, New Mexico. The 'bodies' were later to have been transported somewhere else, but I don't know if anyone knows, or if any similar events took place. I think the dead autopsy scientists is part of a lesser accepted story, such that it is. The show has definitely pumped up it's sci-fi, i.e., with the glowing aliens and the granolith thingy. I'm a huge scifi fan, so I'm happy with this developing mythology, but I miss the relationships a little. But I comfort myself with the idea that if and when the couples reunite, their relationships will have been hard fought and well won. I don't like anything handed to me on a platter, and it seems normal right now for all the couples to be scattered and struggling with everything. Thanks to Mike's kindness, I have been able to watch the first episode of Series 2, so what follows is my impression, partly a response to some of the things you've been saying on the list. The plot's predictably 'this is what we did last season', but they've changed the 'look' of the place a lot, giving it a modern shopping centre. Although I can understand them wanting to revise the 'look and feel' a bit, I wonder if the grim style isn't throwing at least one of the baby's limbs out with the bath water. In the first season, I felt as though these people were empathatic personalities, people I would like to have been friends with at that age - and the 'story' one I would have enjoyed being a participant in. Now the dry presentation makes them much more distant, more like people 'over there' and less attractive (despite what I'll say below about bodies); the 'identification' has been diminished, and for me, that's a loss. Contrary to the impression I'd got from some list comments, you have to wait right to the end to see JB take his shirt off, but once he does . . . I can't imagine why JB's effort (he must work *so* hard at that) was wasted last season! Brendan's hair has grown and he's obviously been working out, so now he looks like a chubby dweeb instead of a scrawny one. Isn't it lucky we've all got different taste? Mahjendra's (Maria's) hair has miraculously extended, and that contributes to an ageing process that makes her look like Marilyn Monroe pretending to be a school girl - absolutely sexy adult, no hint of childish innocence at all. Even Shiri, the first time we see her, looks very grown up with her hair not tied back, though she reverted to 'little school girl' more completely than anyone else - making her look (I thought) out of place, especially when she talks to Max about their relationship's sexual content. The characters seem to be schizoid about their age, both young *and* old - not convincing, for me. All the characters talk about having sex with each other (wanting to) in a pragmatic, adult way, not the yearning babyish way of Series 1 that was quite appealing - there's one particular encounter in the Crashdown cafe between Maria and Michael, where he's pulling slices off a pizza, and she's asking him if they can have sex please. He dismisses her fairly brutally - more character building stuff to differentiate him from 'Max' - but it jars when you hear that they're all going to pretend to go back to school in the next episode, and this is their 'end of holiday' party! There's an unresolved conflict, I think, between the original pitch of the programme as an 'isn't it weird and difficult to be a teenager' programme about emotions with a bit of sci-fi thrown in to make a good metaphorical structure for the arguments, and what's beginning here (if I'm reading the signals right): a harder-edged sci-fi programme (more like First Wave's second series - they made a similar shift with that, I think) that's got a team of characters who have back-stories that don't fit the new roles they're going to play. These characters need to be out of school, young adults, not kids - though my feeling about that is partly just a reaction to the way all the actors look now, all much more grown up than last year (except Brendan and Colin). There was one strand that unsettled me badly, and which - if it turns out to be one of the themes they want to explore - might scupper the series as one that can be sold into the British market. Nasedo (the shape-shifter) is written out in this first episode (he dies at the end) and his removal as a potential 'older, wiser' consultant figure is handled in a very strange way. There's a cross [angry] 'telephone call' he has with Michael, who is told that he mustn't be phoned about things with Max being consulted first; then there's a scene in which Max is repeatedly described as 'leader' of 'the royal family' of four aliens; Max is criticised for not leading adequately, all just in words, without there being any real substance to the thread at this stage because we haven't seen anything to substantiate it yet. I think British audiences will *hate* the idea of Max being 'King' of a group of teenagers who (we're reminded) are meant to be living out 'ordinary' problems for us to identify with, even if they're all embodied in *ex*traordinary metaphors. It felt as though the people who set up (and succeeded so well) with last year's programmes have been bullied into accepting new ideas, new threads, and a new style (the change in look, darker, moodier, far more urban) have fought a rearguard action to preserve bits of last year's good stuff. The conflicts felt thoroughly unresolved to me. I can't wait to watch more episodes, but I'm unhappy with the prospect of the series getting into a big study of the power structure within the group of four, instead of focusing on how they relate as equals and unequals to their 'ordinary' human contemporaries. It seems to me that where the latter is a 'universal', interesting to everyone because we all have that difficulty (relating our sense of who we are to the nightmare of what we dread other people think about us), worrying about power relationships is a very thin issue, something that'll only be interesting to a few who happen to have a problem with it. I loved the physical artefacts signalling 'skins', but wondered about the way they were introduced - this was *not* narrative clarity, or narrative mystery - it was just a bit clumsy, and a neat way of introducing a new sci-fi idea while killing off Nasedo. Both scenes with skins left me feeling as though a chunk of explanatory script that I needed to hear had been left on the cutting room floor. I'll be very interested to hear what you have to say about these responses - I hope that the fact they're coming a few weeks after you've seen the episodes won't make them feel irrelevant or out-of-date. I thought it was just my own ISP, but I'm still getting Roswell messages rolling in from earlier this month... Anyway, I think some minor criticism is understandable; a part of what made Roswell "Roswell" seems to have been sold out, to make way for more sci-fi. Realistically, I think the show is doing whatever it can to stay on the air, and that means pandering to the WB network. Plus, aside from Jonathon Frakes, I don't know if many people on that staff truly know how to write and/or direct for sci-fi? But I keep the faith that once the producers feel 'comfortable' that the show will remain on the air, we'll get some of the good from the first season -- along with the enhancements of the second season, and then it may actually be the 'break out hit' that they originally thought it was going to be. I *have* been enjoying the faster-paced episodes, for a change. Still, I haven't seen much criticism at all, and I was watching carefully to see the reactions to the new season. And if reports are right, 4 more episodes were picked up for this season. It's also interesting how different the background story is from the books. (Minor SPOILERS, if you haven't read the books: The crash simply contained alien-scientists that crashed. No cheesy royalty story (unless that comes later?). I find the book version a bit more appealing, in this regard.) But I understand why Nasedo had to die; in order to keep the mystery if the pod squad's background, he couldn't be allowed to reveal anymore to the viewers. So, having him 'off in Washington' helped to keep us in the dark. The only other 'cheesy' thing that bothered me was revealing Isabel's alien name. Not to be overly scientific, but any alien spoken language would most likely not even sound like a language to us. Plus, it doesn't really help the story. One thing that Roswell does so well, particularly in the first season, was to be very careful at not being the typical sci-fi type of show, where general societal problems and issues are dealt with in a cloaked manner. (i.e., think Star Trek). It's actually one of the main things that, at least for me, makes me not enjoy sci-fi in general. Few movies or shows did it well enough, such as "Planet of the Apes" or even "2001: A Space Odyssey," for me to enjoy. Of course, 2001 was more about computers becoming sentient than the other topics. 'Angel' is another good example; almost all the demons on the show are more closely related to America's ethnic problems. I'd also like for the show to have a broader story arc; at the moment, we just don't know what it is, other than to eventually go home and possibly winning some kind of war. In the meantime, I guess we'll have various 'bad guys' of the week to thwart. I noticed some others complaining that each episode is a 'character episode,' that is to say, and episode devoted mainly to a particular character. I don't mind that at all, and usually prefer it. For me, having a little bit of each character in each episode with a prolonged story for the whole season would be too soap-operatic. So I'm happy with an Isabel episode last week, and a Michael episode this week. Looks like we'll have a Liz episode next week. I wasn't very clear about one point I made in yesterday's post, and thought I ought to clarify it in case what I said got muddled with 'Princess Di' type 'royal' issues that I wasn't addressing. Some things flop dreadfully here. We're good at buying and enjoying American series that have 'personalities' and 'human relations', and they do well here. But series about 'big moral issues' that tub-thump, or programmes that spend more time on theoretical presentations than on relationships, don't do well. I don't think there's even a tiny element of offence likely about the use of the term 'royal' to describe the alien group - that's not the issue - it's that having a big deal about who's boss and who's following will bore the knickers off UK audiences. They'll just not watch another episode. I don't suppose Warners take all *that* much notice of the international market, but I know that L&C's survival *was* partly because international sales, especially its huge success here in the UK and in Australia. Frakes brought over Ron Moore who wrote for one of the Star Trek series, though I can't remember which one right now. I like the faster pace of this season--hey I'm the person who slowly went mad during Toy House--though I know it was a favorite of many other people. I think Colin's point about the 'young adult' vs 'teenagers' feel of the series is accurate. Last season was a slower, dreamier pace, highlight by Liz's voiceovers and journal entries. Sometimes I'm nostalgic for those, but in light of the horrors of White Room and then the life and death situations revealed in Destiny, the dream is over, and the teenagers have had to grow up fast. So in a lot of ways, it's jarring to have them set against a high school background now, but it's meant to be. As Liz put it once "we left normal." Sorry if this is not what you want to read, Jill - but I think it's doing credit to the show and its people to talk through what they're doing. For me, hearing different responses to mine, and discussing our responses, helps me to see more in the show, and to get more out of it. Having said that, though, I have to say that 'Ask Not' was a disappointment. There were lots of good parts - I thought 'Kyle' got a fairer crack of the whip than I've seen him have before, and thought the idea that he and Tess might 'get together' intriguing - but having him and his dad *know* about the alien group without joining the 'inner circle' of friends makes the dynamic very complicated: last season, there was lots of emphasis on how dangerous it would be if the Valenti's 'knew'. In this episode, no-one seemed worried about the 'secret' getting out at all, and despite the sub-plot that showed that power-surges could be 'monitored' by curious outsiders, there was plenty of casual use of powers (for example Max's pretty blue-ish screen around Michael and Isabel) as though discovery didn't really matter any more. Is it going to be ok, this season, for anyone to know that there are four nice looking aliens in Roswell? What happens next time Kyle has a temper - or has he turned into a nicer person this summer, and forgotten that he used to fancy Liz and be jealous of Max? I could see why Max started the episode off running away from Nasedo's remains, with his shirt still off (nice that someone keeps a stash of clean t-shirts that fit in the caf=E9 in case a naked runner arrives), but why, please, were the 'girls' shown jigging together, wearing dresses that were not of a kind that they would normally wear, and apparently only doing so to expose lots of cleavage? Has the production team just imposed a flesh quota that assumes that quantity x of exposure (presumably split into a separate timed quotas for men and women) will generate quantity y of viewer numbers? Even the Australian soaps we see a lot of here in the UK manage to 'justify' their straightforward fleshly titilation with a little more narrative viability than I could see here. Predictably, the strand in the episode which unsettled me most was the one I had been unhappy with in Skins and Bone - the articulation of Max's status as 'leader' of a special and separate group. I'm so old that I can remember the day Kennedy died, where I was when I heard, how I felt, that sort of thing. And I found the casual analogy between Max's challenges as 'leader' of a group of four teenage 'hybrid' human aliens (where did the hybrid assertion come from?) with Kennedy's challenges plain offensive. In the European middle ages, you could have your head chopped off for 'l=E8se majeste' - making an inappropriate and insulting analogy between your own situation and that of someone important. I'm not proposing capital punishment for the Roswell team because of course we can all 'learn' from history, but this extraordinary over-inflation of Max's situation was absurd. Why do Max and Michael need to fight over 'leadership' at all? Why is it a contest between them, without Isabel (with more practiced powers) or Tess (with all the knowledge she has from Nasedo) being treated as potential leaders? Aren't they just as well qualified as the men? I hope I'll get used to Roswell looking more like an 'ordinary' town than the 'special' place it was in the last series; but it seemed odd to have Max run up to a modern looking frontage of plain glass and then be seen inside last year's Crashdown caf=E9 set. That wasn't the only continuity problem: having spent much of the episode wondering when I was going to find out what a 'skin' was, and thinking I ought to wind back the tape because I must have missed something explaining them, right at the end of the epsiode one of the characters (was it Isabel? I haven't gone back to check) asks another what they are, asked the questions I'd been asking myself all the way through. I know it's sci-fi and it's meant to be mysterious, Jill, but sci-fi's meant to be intriguing, not confusing, isn't it? This felt, as last time, as though bits of explanatory script had been cut for the sake of the fast pace which, like Mike, I do admire - but perhaps the structure of the episode could have coped with having this 'who are they?' question being articulated much sooner? I wish, too, that someone had either taken a decision to have them all graduate this summer, or reminded the actors to pretend that they're just kids - most of the actors' apparent age seemed to fluctuate over about a ten year belt all the way through. Perhaps that'll settle as the episodes go on? Sorry if this sounds grumbly - but I'll be interested to hear what you think= ! Cheers, Colin. I really enjoy reading all the views and everything about the show. I just never have time to reply or make too many comments. I thought the same about the comparison to Kennedy, but I was even more shocked (scared) at the suggestion of Anikin Skywalker as an immaculate conception. But, alas it is only a story (a very good one at that). I thought I was the only one who wondered at quite a few of the "new" scenes, situations, powers, etc. - but being the die hard fan that I am of the show - I accepted for face value that this is just a show.
