I agree wholeheartedly. I only recently acquired my copy of the
Keiichi Suzuki single, and I only appreciate the song more now that I've
heard it in stereo. :) Honestly, I think that Satellite Seranade is the
Orb's best remix to date.

Asylum is very hit and miss! I personally really like it, especially disk
2 with the Andy Weatherall (God of remixes himself) mix and some other mix
by some lady with an Italian sounding name (don't have the disk with me!
:).
The problem is, my brother - who has similar tastes to myself, donated his
disk 1 to me because he thought it was awful!
So, have a listen before you buy it! :)

Subject: (orb) lxp in melbourne
hello orb list!
i'm back after a year or so - subscription subsided through sheer
despondency each cancelled australian orb tour. but. i went to both the
alex p melbourne shows last week. what a treat :)
the venue was upmarket alternative. list, you would be shocked at how many
people i met who only vaguely knew or cared who the special guest was!
(though a good cache of orbsters skinning up at the back)
i found the mid-week performance more stimulating than the friday one.
well, meeting the star at the bar after certainly helped. i wanted to say
something more profound than hey thanks for the music it was great, but
theres not really much else to say. oh. he laughs if you mention having
lived in hereford.
an interesting range of music. (curiously, a friend brought a compilation
cd on the weekend which includes quite a few of the tracks played.) no
discernable orb tunes. could have done without hearing the most dumb "funky
town (wont you take me to)". ghod. not even ironic.
the mixing on friday night was a little bit sloppier. the work all week
drink and dance crowd didnt mind. i sat down the back for a while
listening, wondering about the lifestyle of a touring dj, what it would do
to one's head.
anyway. it was all very interesting. if someone is in touch with orb
management, please forward our thanks. it's rumoured that a fuller orb
might visit in summer. (yes. again.) that would be excellent if they're
into it. but given the tedium of clubs and the vastness of this country,
how about just one outdoor gathering in the desert about 15 hours drive
from each major city.
mmm. imagine that.
warmly,
justina.

Can't remember much about disk 1, must check it out when I get it off my
bro'. Disk 2 though I quite like, Asylum itself ain't a great tune; the
andy Weatherall mix is dancey, but thats probably what I like most about
it, the nice groove; the third track isn't much of a remix though, more of
an extension!
Similarly, for Toxygene; most of the stuff is kool, apart from the original
Toxygene (in my opinion anyway). I am still fifty-fifty about that whole
album, don't know whether to love or hate it; it obviously lacks the audio
insanity of Thrash, but it still retains LX's groove. Some of the songs
are just super though, S.A.L.T., Molten Love and that last track (don't
have the CD with me), will go down in history as great Orb tracks; unlike
others. I think my main concern is that unlike everything form before
Orblivion, Orblivion is a collection of songs more than an Album!
I do hope the next little fruit-cake will be more connected. Actually,
what would work well, would be a limited edition Orb remix album; where he
takes Orblivion and melts the tracks together in that special Orbish way to
create a madcap collection.
:)

As to Alex being a musician, I'll point out that in the insert for the
Gary Numan "Random" 2-CD set, it says, "...Alex Paterson, Synthesizers...".
Anyway, I'd say Alex is a musician, if he can create a certain sense
from all the void samples he uses. I certainly could not take "x"
number of samples and turn all that into some whole piece of music, with
form. Hardly. I'd be the laughing stock... ;-)

Oh, come on folks, buy the darn release. It's in print, easy to find, cheap (two
CDs for practically the price of one), and it's an excellent comp.
Do we really need to do this for easy-to-find stuff?

Subject: (orb) What else?
OK, I'm sure this, too, has been mentioned time and time again,
but I don't recall seeing everything lumped together in one
spot. Basically, what Orb songs are floating around out there
that don't appear on the "official" albums.
Now, before I get answers, let me qualify this by saying that
I'm not talking about remixes of Orb tunes, NOR am I talking
about Orb remixes of OTHER groups' tunes. What I'm
referring to are things like Cocksville USA, Rose Tinted,
and others.
As far as I know, Cocksville USA and Rose Tinted are
"officially" Orb tunes that don't appear on any Orb albums.
Cocksville USA appears on Axiom Dub, and Rose Tinted
appears on one of the discs from the 2cd Toxygene box
set (UK).
What else is out there?
Oh, and off-topic a bit (but still ambient-related), I have two
questions:
Does anyone have the first Laraaji cd, which was produced by
Brian Eno back in 1980? I have Laraaji's SECOND release
(Essence/Universe), but alas, it's on LP, and I would kill for a
cd copy of that. But his first album is back in print. Is it worth
picking up?
Secondly, I have a cd entitled Excursions Into Ambient Groove,
Volume 2. Does anyone have volumes 1 or 3? Are they as
friggin' wonderful as volume 2 of this series? (I find myself
listening to that album more than any Orb release I have!)
Later!

I, personally dislike these tunes. I think that Delta MK II, Secrets, and
Passing of Time are, by far, the best songs on Orblivion. Toxygene is good
too, but it doesn't have that "Orb" feeling to it.

Plus, there's a great track by "The Geep" (who are in fact The Orb) on
one of the New Electronica compilations (don't know the title of that
particular volume, but it's one with a grey cover, an R.H. Kirk track,
and a couple Basic Channel tracks). All this is probably in Laz's

The JAMS a.k.a. the timelords - Burn the Beat 12 inch (only marginally

and the grand prize of my shopping trip...
a still sealed copy of the Eternity Project One Compilation on vinyl...
i'm very pleased... not sure if i should open it or save it for someone

Well, in the case of American releases, they quite often get sent to the UK
(and maybe the rest of Europe) for cheap sale. One can tell that this is
the case as usually the bar codes are punched out by some means to make
them unreadable to machines. This stops them being bought up cheap in
the UK and sold back into the States at profit.
This also sometimes happens to still-available product in the USA, however.
Some chains in the UK, notably HMV, import deletions from mainland Europe
as well and sell them as "offers" or "cut-price". Often they are chart
releases from little more than a year previously.

Well, if you like Laraaji it is. I actually don't own any
other Laraaji, but have heard most of his albums, and I
think that "Ambient #3, Day of Radiance" (the album of which
we speak) is some of his best stuff, very hypnotic and
trancey, but if you _hate_ hammered dulcimer, then you won't
like this since it ain't much else. I think his newer stuff
is a bit more new-agey, and I prefer the simplicity of the
first album.

This is true, on the KLF mailing list there has been a lot of discission

I hear the discs are melted down and formed into plowshares
and paperclips.
OK, no more preying on the na=EFve: A CD manufacturer
keeping something like this long-term in a warehouse makes
no economic sense. Anything like this that won't sell
anymore -- seemingly at any price -- will be dealt with
indeed. The preferred method of getting rid of said
merchandise is by auction. Vendors that specialise in
music will bid on an entire lot rather than by individual
unit quantities, or maybe by the number of boxes or bulk
weight.
Now if you are speaking of a CD retailer that just sits
on a bunch of merchandise, this is simply an inefficient
operation that is likely to go out of business and have
all its merchandise go on the auction block, ...and well,
you get the picture!

I own "Essence/Universe" on CD. It's been out of print for
several years. It was released on the Passport sublabel
Audion, which were all part of the JEM group, which have
been defunkt for a decade. (See the previous message
"Out-Of-Print CDs" for more enlightenment.) This has nothing
to do with The Orb!

Subject: (orb) out-of-print and hard to find cds
As a former employee of Trans World Entertainment Corporation (for those
of you in the states, Record Town, Tape World, Coconuts, Music Town,
etc...), I know for a fact that there are millions of cds sitting in
wharehouses witing to be sent out and sold. TWEC is so far behind on
there recall shippments its not even funny. See, every couple of months
or so each store has a recall, where anywhere from 50-500 cds are sent
back to the company. These are cds that sit on shelves unbought for a
while. The idea is to move them from a store that can't sell them to one
that can. However, being as efficient as they are, thousands of boxes
are unopened and sitting in a wharehouse until someone has the time to
deal with them. So there could quite possibly be some Aubrie mixes
sitting somewhere waiting for us. I know I've to pull some Orb discs off
the shelf in my time. None were hard to find, but I worked during the
Island days. I know how TWEC runs, so stuff from the Mercury days could
still be sitting around somewhere. All we can do is hope and wait...

I just bought Pomme Fritz the other day. And I must say this is now one of
my Favourites. I used to think that Orbus was the trippiest, but now.....
I also found Live 93 which I really like as well.....
Oh well, just had to share :).....

FWIW, to my ear, Rose Tinted is a version (probably an early one) of
Asylum, rather than a "new" or "different" track.

There is also Codpiece (Trouser Torpedo mix), by "ByTESIZE NUNS" (the
Orb and Kris Needs), available on Trance Europe Express 4.

Other non-album orb songs:
Davy Jones' Locker - Orb/System 7 (seeing as Hillage is an associated
member anyways..)
Any song off of the album "Rebirth" by Voices of Kwahn
Higher than the Sun - Primal Scream/Orb (It was a collabortaion, not a remix)
that's all I can think of off the top of my head...
cheers,

Last night I stopped by Tower Records, just to check it out, and I happened to
come across System 7 - 777 and KLF - Chill Out. The System 7 album has a
track produced and mixed by the Orb (which is quite good in my opinion) called
"A cool dry place." Songwriting credits go to : Patterson, Weston, Hillage,
and Giraudy.
Also, I was listening to KLF's Chill Out, and I recognized many samples (not
Orb). These aren't trippy samples, but just like old classic songs. Was
there ever a problem clearing these samples? I would imagine that there would
be a problem, and the album would be discontinued. Anybody know?

'Davy Jones' Locker' is not an Orb collaboration. LX was involved in the
writiing/producing/mixing, but not The Orb.

It's true that the compilation's liner notes offer no explanation of who
"The Geep" are...it'd be nice to have some real confirmation. But if you
listen to the track, I'll bet it'll sound a LOT like Orb. The story, as
I heard it, was that they did this during their dispute with Big Life,
hence it not being out under the "Orb" name....

I have "the geep" song, and it never occurred to me that it may be the
orb... I must go home and listen again tonight to make sure....

Has anyone else heard the CD SUNSPOTS by Paradise 3001?
I also have a feeling that it's either a Orb pseudonym or they were
heavily influenced by ABTU era Orb...Even down to the album being
credited to a "Dr. Nunu"...
