Subject: Toll? (Ramleh?)
Date: 19 Jun 1997 19:23:06 +0000
Greetings, all:
I've been trying to find something/anything out about
the band Toll.
I've found nothing about them on the WWWeb, and it just doesn't pay to
ask about 'em in record stores because I either get blank looks or
pointed to the cutout bins, where I can find multiple copies of a
cheesy looking CD by a recent (and different) band with the same
name.........
=========
I have two great compilation appearances by them:
The track "Brute Freeze" appears on the first "Dry Lungs" comp
[Placebo], crediting Toll "with contribution from Controlled
Bleeding."
The track "there must be more than this" appears on the
"Ohrenschrauben" disc of the "Ohrenschrauben/Ohrensausen" 2CD comp
[Dragnet].
They're both great, creepy, drony tracks, but there's positively no
information offered about the band whatsoever.
=========
Their "Christ Knows" album [Broken Flag] appears on Pierre "Pacific
231" Jolivet's home page, inamongst other records upon which P231
appeared. I e'd him and asked if he could tell me anything about the
band, and he offered the following cryptic reply:
> "Remember Ramleh (Broken Flag Label), same crowd..."
=========
Can anyone tell me (i) anything else about Toll, or possibly even (ii)
where I could find that pesky li'l "Christ Knows" alb? Very much
obliged.

They also have a cassette called "Christ Knows" on Christknows
what label. Can't recall, exactly. Don't have it on me, drat
the luck. It's quite laid back. Comparable to Contrastate, or
a subdued, structural, mid-80s NWW with hint of Pacific 231.
Squeaky, theremin-like analog, guitar dirge-drone, humour, and
really cool-sounding patheto-phlegmatic vocals mixed a few
notches below average. One of the first truly successful
bubblepop-industrial combos. Twisted sheet mon. Nice.
If I find it, I'll post a brief follow-up.

Speaking of Ramleh, their new LP "Boeing" is pretty good. 3 long
straightforward psych-rock songs (less 'experimental' than the material on
"Be Careful What You Wish For"). The first track reminded me a bit of
Skullflower's '3/5 of a Mile in 10 Secs.' track off of "Transformer".

Please excuse the somewhat limited appeal of this post. I'm always
complaining that nothing interesting ever happens in this town, blah blah
blah... Here are three intersting things. Tickets can be purchased at 33
degrees, and I think prices are $8, $5, and $8 for the three events, and
there is a discount price for students and also if you buy tickets to all
three events. Email me or call N D (contact info below) for more info. In
related news, N D #20 should be off to the printers sometime this week.

=46rancisco Lopez - July 28th Hyde Park Theatre 11:00pm
premier of a new acousmatic sound work:
'Addy en el pa=EDs de las frutas y los chunches'
[Addy in the land of fruits and thingummyjigs]
=46rancisco L=F3pez (Madrid, Spain) will premier his new work incorporating =
a
multitude of field recordings from the Costa Rican jungle. He has composed
this piece by transforming these environmental recordings into an immense
aural formation. Using six speaker projection, the audience will be
submersed into an organic mass of sound. The space will be kept in
complete darkness to achieve maximum concentration on the sound. The total
lack of visuals or additives of any other kind is an aesthetic decision
that confronts the audience with an concentrated aural experience. The
music flows slowly and continuously in a completely 'anti fast-food
conception'.
Over the last fifteen years, Francisco L=F3pez has been creating
electroacoustic soundscapes in an attempt to reach an ideal of absolute
concr=E8te music. Through what he calls 'the exploration of the universe of
broad-band noise from the real world', his music arises from an extreme
processing of environmental recordings. To date, his prolific catalog
comprises 60 works released by 30 labels from Spain, Germany, The
Netherlands, France, Poland, UK, Canada and USA, with commissions from
renown institutions/organizations such as the Dutch National Radio, the
Ralph Lemon Dance Company (New York), V2 Organisation (Rotterdam) and the
Goethe Institute. During the last four years Francisco L=F3pez has toured
extensively through Europe and America doing acousmatic performances in
Berlin, Amsterdam, Zurich, Bern, Vienna, Rotterdam, Gijon, Alicante, New
York, San Francisco, Austin, Albuquerque, Louisville and San Jose de Costa
Rica.

MNORTHAM/JGRZINICH July 5th Candy Factory 8 to midnight
and the Orogenetics Collective
a four hour installation exploring a physical topography of sound
'The Stomach of the Sky'
MNORTHAM (Michael Northam) and JGRZINICH (John Grzinich), two local sound
artists, will premier in Austin their new work the stomach of the sky, a
CD released on the Amsterdam record label Staalplaat. For this premier,
they are
collaborating with other local sound artists and projection artist Luke
Savisky to
create a unique sound environment and visual experience at the Candy Factory=
.
This work is inspired by the exploration of threads between nature and
audio/visual composition.
The evening will be an enveloping environment allowing the audience to
explore their own journey through the stomach of the sky. The event will
include a dual live mix of the CD and other sound sources amplified through
four speakers and into installed sound devices, creating a complex
vibrating organism. There will be film projections by Luke Savisky and
interactions between various natural materials throughout the space will
create a special experience for all who attend.
The Orogenetics Collective is an ephemeral and ever changing dialogue
between sound artists and trans-media artists (the participants for this
project are: John Grzinizh, Seth Nehil, Michael Northam, Carmen Resendez,
and Josh Ronsen).
MNORTHAM (Michael Northam) has worked with sound for performance and
installation since 1989, and has presented work for site-specific
locations, galleries, festivals and art spaces in North America and Europe.
Recently in Austin he has worked with Linda Montano and Ellen Fullman for
Montano's Chakraphonics meditation and with Bryan Green for his dance
performance piece "Sukka (shelter)."
JGRZINICH (John Grzinich) has designed and constructed wire-based devices
used to create sound elements for performance and studio work since 1993.
His interest in sound stems from studies of architecture and design and
their relationship to spatial perception and the human environment. He is
the co-founder of the Austin based group Alial Straa.

Ellen Fullman & Anna Homler July 12 The Candy Factory 8:00pm
Ellen Fullman (Austin) and Anna Homler (Los Angeles) will perform a series
of new collaborative work and solo performances.
"New Music Karaoke"
Since 1981, Ellen Fullman has collaborated with engineers and instrument
builders, experimenting with wire, resonator boxes and tuning systems to
produce an installation, the Long String Instrument, which fills her
warehouse studio in Austin, the Candy Factory. Last year, Fullman was
awarded a New Forms Regional Initiative Artist's Projects Grant,
administered by DiverseWorks and Mexicarte, for Solo Voice with Tape, to be
premiered as part of the SonicWorks Series, DiverseWorks, Houston, on July
11, 1997. Lyrics, written and performed by Fullman, are rooted in her
identity as a person who grew up in the Deep South, listening to and
emulating delta blues music as a teenager. The work will be informed by
=46ullman's recent study over the past four years of North Indian classical
vocal music with Anita Slawek. This is the last time Fullman will perform
in Austin before relocateing to Seattle.
Anna Homler is an intermedia artist whose work encompasses music, language,
and installation. Since 1982 she has collaborated in America with
composer/musicians Steve Moshier, David Moss, and Ethan James and in Europe
with Viola Kramer, the Voices of Kwahn, Axel Otto and Frank Schultz, Geert
Waegeman and Pavel Fajt. She has performed extensively throughout the US
and Europe and her work has been released on several CDs and compilations.
She makes words musical and music like words.

I bought a used Daniel Langois disc (for the beauty of winona) at Ozone
in Portland this weekend, but when I opened it, on the disc itself was
written "Neglige - Electronic Underwear - Pranatal Inferno - Archegon"
with german text written around the edge. The copyright is from 1991.
The disc wasn't too bad, sort of bleep-bloopy at first, but it moved on
to something quite noisy and nice. Is anyone familiar with this disc?
I have idea no who the band is (which of those 4 names it was).

Date: 24 Jun 1997 01:26:55 +0000
Just received the latest e-missive from Manifold -- sounds like a cool
release, and it's even relevant to this list :-)
------- Forwarded Message Follows -------
OK, after a long wait, it is available immediately, come and get it:
AUBE 'Aqua Syndrome' cd in water package
an initially manufactured edition of 300 is only available direct from
manifold via mailorder for $14 postage and shipping included.
Subsequent runs will not be in stores or at other mailorder
companies...maybe ever, but at least until 1998. 'Aqua Syndrome' comes
in a clear, heavy vinyl pouch with sealed bladders of tinted water.
The disc is suspended behind that with intricate silkscreening on both
sides of the pouch, the entire package save the disc is transparent,
in keeping with the sound source, water. Package is extremely sturdy
and has been engineered so that we can guarantee your packaging will
stay intact indefinitely with reasonable care. The sound of the disc
is maybe Nakajimas most ambitious to date, at times so quiet as to
disappear beneath the level of human audibility, then over time
revealing the powerful, throbbing strength that threatens to burst
free like a tidal wave. Intricate mixtures of sound and background
crafting demonstrate that Nakajima has mastered using the clarity
offered by digital recordings as opposed to
analog/cassette...metaphorizing the endless, black unknown depths of
deepest oceans, teeming with bizzare life and movement. All in all, a
release of intense mystery and atmosphere more than worthy of its
elaborate packaging. $14 ppd.

None of them. I think that's a CD by Sigillum S, if I remember correctly.
Could be SShe Retina Stimulants or another related band too... I'll look

Gamelan Son of Lion's instruments were made by
composer-ethnomusicologist Barbara Benary and resemble
gamelans (metal-orchestras) found in Indonesian villages.
The set of instruments consist of about twenty gongs and
metallophones (played like xylophones, with mallets) and
are supplemented by an assortment of flutes, drums,
hubcaps and specially tuned clarinets. The ensemble was
founded in 1976 by Benary and composers Philip Corner
and Daniel Goode together with students of theirs.
Eventually professional musicians took the place of the
students and the repertoire of the ensemble has grown from
4 contemporary pieces in 1976 to more than 250 as of 1997.

-----------
show opens with an hour prelude of tape music pieces from 8-9pm featuring
work by various current Bay Area composers...
More details below:
momentum 2 is the latest offering from the combined efforts of 2779 (the
collective space formerly known as Komotion) and Cultural Labyrinth
(a booking and promotional non-entity founded by A.L. Dentel and Bob
Boster). The previous shows have focused on bringing together related
genres of music that have distinctive audiences in an effort to
cross-pollinate both artists and audiences. Always efforts are made to
keep the costs down at the door; to make this as much of a showcase as
possible, without sacrificing curatorial integrity.
The latest endeavor brings together an exciting range of talent:
Mike Berry builds extended instruments, combining wood and strings
with computers and software. His extended ramblings model a prototypical
music to be realized by the audience.
"Tonight He Performs on Autoharp" for autoharp and GrainWave.
---------------------------
Like the music of the most ancient people, Ted Henderson believes music
should have a function.
Long before it was demoted to selling sneakers and soda, music was
reserved for sharing information, celebrations, and worship. With that
intention, Ted uses the tools found in the electronic musician's studio to=
share informtion about his experience as an African-American, celebrate
his people's acheivement, and worship his god.
Patty Liu is currently a student of electronic music composition at Mills
College and a graduate of Cogswell College's Music Engineering Technology =
program. She's a violinist and composer of tape and computer music.
Matt Thompson is completing a degree in Music Engineering Technology at
Cogswell College in Sunnyvale. He composes tape and computer music and =
is
currently designing a computer-based instrument for interactive music.
Our piece is a dramatization of actual sound events, reenacted with live
tape, based on a true story of urban claustrophobia.
Vorticella is a recently created "sound generating entity of free
improvisation." While acoustic sounds remain the main focus, they fit
into the context of this show via an underrepresented aspect of
electronica - dramatic amplification of quiet sounds. And they fit
because we're excited to have them on the program.
Vorticella is an ensemble of Bay Area improvised and New Music veterans
Eva Baumgartner on traditional and found percussion, Krys Bobrowski on
kelp, French Horn, and bowls, Erin Espeland on "extended" cello, and
Brenda Hutchinson on "The Long Tube" (an acoustic vocal extension). This
performance marks one of their first appearances as an ensemble and =
should
not be missed.
Using samplers, analog keyboards, field recordings and guitars, Matmos
make atmospheric, idiosyncratic electronica. Need some reference points?
Imagine the neo-electro of Autechre, the attention to guitar textures and
production detail of Moebius & Plank's "RastaKrautPasta" LP, the =
clamorous
musique concrete of Tod Dockstader, and the dark cinematics of Coil- =
okay,
so now you're stuck in a web of derivative signifiers, but you're getting
warm.
Based in San Francisco, Matmos is Drew Daniel and m. c. Schmidt. The band
members biographies reflect their brainy, decentered approach to
electronica-- Daniel is currently getting his PhD; Schmidt helps manage
the conceptual art department of the San Francisco Art Institute. Daniel
is a veteran of the indie rock scene in Louisville, Kentucky, and has
collaborated on film soundtracks and, oddly enough, hip hop projects with
Jeff Mueller (of June of '44) and Jason Noble (Rachel's band, formerly of
Rodan). In addition to radio DJing, Drew has DJed in jungle and trip hop
clubs in England (while attending Oxford University) and San Francisco
(Klubstitute, Low Rider), and has been making experimental electronic
music since high school. m. c. Schmidt has been making experimental
electronic music for many years, as the leader of avant garde drone =
outfit
X/I and industrial occultists IAO Core, in which he did time with current
members of Amber Asylum and Tipsy.
