Subject: Robert Ashley premiere in Miami
Date: 02 May 1997 11:06:35 -0700
Here's an interesting blurb I just got:
Robert Ashley's new opera "Balseros" will have its World Premiere in Miami
Beach on May 16. The cast is nine singers, including Joan La Barbara, and
two actors; music by Ashley, libretto by playwright Maria Irene Fornes,
based on experiences of Cuban rafters seeking freedom by heading toward the
US.
Schedule is: seven performances between May 16-20 at the Colony Theater,
1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. For tix, etc., call Florida Grand Opera
305.854.7890 ("Balseros" opens the Subtropics 9 New Music Festival.)

Contemporary Guitar Salon:
_________________________
An ongoing forum for Solo Guitar Music, created by David Tronzo and
Wolfgang Muthspiel. Each happening consists of solo performances by the
two guitarists. The performances are an open space for the artists'
expression, including talks, playing recordings, inviting guest artists,
etc. A lot of the music Tronzo and Muthspiel play is not fit for the
networks that exist in Jazz Music today; neither the traditional jazz club
nor the traditional classical concert hall is able to contain their worlds.
Playing solo music on guitar is the most personal form of statement, in a
subtle way the most radical. The music of the two has emerged independent
from each other in a solo setting, a part of their music which feels most
authentic and independent from existing stylistical - or business - traps.
The Contemporary Guitar Salon is intended to be a continuum, a steady
dialogue between the two guitarists as well as with an audience that is
ready to listen, to take part. It is not jazz in a bar or nightclub; it
will happen in neutral environments, maybe even in homes. It is driven by
a need to communicate those areas of artistic production that are hard to
market, hard to sell, highly specific and open to constant change and new
influence.
The CGS is not tied to one place of performance. It will move around,
first in NYC later on tour in other cities.

Hello,
Just to let you know I've posted a list of about 30 CDs FS in
the postindustrial/experimental ambient/blabla genres on
rec.music.industrial and rec.music.marketplace.cd, including
a fair amount of out-of-print things/imports.
I will be happy to email people the list upon request, but it
may take me a while to respond as I do not have much time to
spend at the keyboard these days.
Thanks and apologies for the large crosspost.

Subject: Tape-beatles performances/live radio interview Tuesday
Date: 12 May 1997 13:11:36 -0700 (PDT)
SF Bay Area list folks!
The semi-legendary performers/composers known as The Tape-beatles (now
going under the guise of Public Works) are in town for a series of shows,
their first-ever in the Bay Area, culminating at Venue 9 on 9th St. in San
Francisco this Wednesday night at 8 pm. Tomorrow night (Tuesday) I will
have them as guests on the Space Platform radio program on Free Radio
Berkeley 104.1 FM at 9:00 PM for an in-depth, informal conversation with
several other participants and call-in questions will be encouraged.
For those unaware of their work, Lloyd Dunn and Ralph Johnson (along with
several other now-departed members) have been working together as the Tape-
Beatles since around 1984 composing often hilarious, completely
"plagiarized" music/tape cutups (their MUSIC WITH SOUND CD, recently
reissued and expanded by Staalplaat, is particularly amazing). Their
live performance revolves around a fantastic, three-16mm-projector diarama
known as PolyVision: meticulously edited found-footage that perfectly
compliment their tape cutups, flanked by film loops, all synchronized
with their musical compositions. Their appearance at Venue 9 will
showcase their brand-new piece as Public Works (their new moniker) entitled
MATTER (which features much more musical/rhythmic composition than before),
and their magnum-opus, THE GRAND DELUSION, and both are presented in
PolyVision.
In an age where appropriated culture art-i-facts are so much the
redundant norm, Tape-beatles/Public Works stand out head and shoulders
above the pack with their work. Don't miss them!
