Subject: [MV] ELVIS OVERLOAD!!!!!!
Well, in the last two days, I saw two very strange movies. Yesterday, with
all the Castaways gone, my wife taking the Miss Congeniality that I was
halfway thru so she could finish it in the comfort of home, and having
watched O Brother for the second time (no, that is not one of the strange
movies... tho it could be), I popped in Six String Samuari. Man, that was
out there.
The other option (but at 124 minutes, I didn't have the time to watch it
last night... .gawd, I am starting to sound like the customer that won't
take a 2-tape movie) was 3000 Miles to Graceland. I left that for tonight,
and I am still trying to decide what I actually thought of that.
But back to 6-String. What dialogue. And it was almost like they were going
for the look of a bad Japanese dub, but ironic because it is all in
English. Overly violent, strange camera tricks, and very far out there.
Now, with 3KMTG, I expected something similar, but not an almost twin.
Overly violent, strange camera tricks, and pretty far out, but striving for
the Hollywood ending.
Actually, I wonder if the producers of Reindeer Games mind that their
script was borrowed. I would be kinda po'ed if I were them, because this is
a much better movie. The acting is better (I hate to admit it, but Costner
can act, when he wants to..... just NO MORE BOSTON ACCENTS!!!!
PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE!!!!!), the action scenes are more fun, and the story,
tho even more cliched and convoluted, actually holds up better.
The movie was as independent and cutting-edge as I was led to believe, but
it is still a rather good, fun time. With all the ratings concerns,
definitely keep this one away from the kiddies, but for the hardcore
violence people who like their movies not-quite-colour-by-numbers, a
marginal recommendation.
Or as David Manning might say (and, hey, if Sony can tell him what to say,
why can't we??) "A cinematic tour-de-force, an instant classic. Kurt
Russell and Kevin Costner sizzle. And, oh boy, does Courtney Cox have a
nice........"
Ok, enough of that:-)

No. I still pertain my previous judgement. He's obviously trying hard to act as
an "actor", but he really lacks true talent. I think some "movement" or, rather
organization is pushing him "in front" and that's why he's in so many movies.
Very few actors (of Hollywood at least) have the ability to identify themselves
with the characters they are acting (upon). So, in this sense I do not in
particular flame Sam N. (for he might as well be the hidden talent) but many
roles does not neces. imply he's good in changing roles. In fact, he is not (you
may feel free to be insulted this time, though).
I liked though the movie where he's on a yacht with Kiwie lady (Top gunny's ex)
and the "butcher of the deep" is trying to ruin their vacation. Both he and the
carrot-cake missy did a good job. This movie surely shows that one can shoot a
movie with less characters than "usual".

By the way, since I have noticed your open arrogance towards other species on
this planet, I was wondering if there's another "movie discussion list" where
there are more participants and the topic is much, much wider?
I have nothing to do with the movies and since I am neither Anglo-Saxon nor a
Jew, I can't really memo. all the names of all the actors/directors/casting crew,
etc. However, I like watching movies and sometimes even find artistic "points" in
some of them. But, today, when the film industry has gone high-sky for profits
one can expect less and less "shooting the movie for the sake of a movie" (of
expressing artistic view of life), thus we are becoming robot-like rent-a-video
androids where movies present "junk food" for our subjugated minds deprived of
good taste.

Subject: [MV] The iron giant - 1998 (?)
**** That's right, I actually watched an animated film
tonight ...
A friend recommended it to me (Hi Elaine !)
I can't say I was too impressed by this iron giant's antics
... It wasn't awful but I wouldn't watch it again either
... 2.5/5
Good visuals, sound, etc. but as is often the case with
those animated films, the story is the issue, it's so
"sappy-la-la" ... At some points it was supposed to be
touching, the iron giant being mistreated by the
government, under heavy fire and I was actually laughing !
It was amusing to me in part ! I was thinking
Schwarzenegger would have been perfect as the "voice of the
giant" too !
Simple story of a huge iron giant from outer space, he
lands on Earth and is "adopted" by a tiny boy ... His
presence has to remain a secret, then of course he is
discovered, wrongly accused of being naughty, I could see
the twists and turns coming from far away ...
Some parts are too unbelievable too, how did the giant knew
how to "pose" in front of that sign to conceal his presence
?? How did he learn how to jump in that lake in a very
"familiar" way ?? How could he learn everything in such a
short period of time basically ?? He couldn't have known
about those things, impossible ... I would have needed more
"suspension of disbelief" to like this ...
Timothy McVeigh would probably have liked this film on the
other hand since it's so "anti-government" ... The entire
film describes the government and the army as EVIL PEOPLE
basically, out to get the poor giant and make him suffer
... it's almost like McVeigh's propaganda in part, material
not suitable for some children in my opinion.
On the other hand the N.R.A. and Charlton Heston would have
been annoyed cos' they keep hammering it that "Guns are bad
and kill people" over and over ... The poor lil' deer was
killed, snif ! snif ! ;-) Oh come on, Timmy, what do you
think is in your hamburger from B**ger K**g ?? It's silly
in those films, "Bambi lovers yet they all want to go to BK
to get their lil' toys !" ... It's like it happens in "The
world of OZ" or sumthin' ... singin' and dancin' ...
I guess I am too "Down to Earth" to really like this stuff.
Good visuals at least !
Cheers, weeping giant !
Marc ;-)

Nope, pre-dates him. Like I said, he covered that in Children of the
Revolution, but I doubt very much that he even leans to the left. (Tho,
that is his business. Not running any McCarthy trials here)

Yep, that is Nic (Ms Kidman to you:-) ). Best thing she ever did was get
rid of the luser andrygonyse (yep, I know that is nowhere near spelled
right) Scientoligist husband of hers.

Open arrogance?? Mate, you have no idea:-) Besides, see, Email 101, if
someone types ":-)", that means you take it seriously at your own
risk. (IE, it is a joke, son.... A JOKE)
But, as for other mailing lists, well you are free to look.

Hey, you asked the questions. If you can't handle the truth ("You can't
handle the truth" - speaking of Mr Cruise), 'tis not my fault:-)

Subject: [MV] Pay it forward - 2000
** Minor spoiler **
Hi !
I watched this one recently ... Good film overall despite a
weak ending, 3/5.
Set in Las Vegas, It's the story of a young boy (Haley Joel
Osment) who designs this system for a school project. He
has to find 3 people he will help and in return those 3
people will each find 3 more to help, etc. The plan is
to change the world surely but surely by having total
strangers be kind to each other, etc. His father left 3
years ago so that it can be used from time to time to make
us feel sorry for him ...
Helen Hunt plays the boy's mother, she has a drinking
problem so it can be used from time to time during the
movie to make us feel sorry for her ... She is also a
waitress in a casino AND some kind of "strip club" only
there was no nudity in there, what's this ?? I wonder what
the drunken guys in the bar were so excited about ?? All
this cheering and laughing over a lil' cleavage ?? Come on
! They must not go out very often !!
Actually, Hunt looks like a cross between "Erin Brockovich"
and a raccoon .. look at those eyes, that make up ...
ewwwwwwk ! ;-) Well, I never noticed how curveous she was
either, I guess like Julia Roberts in "Erin Brockovich" she
benefited from "movie magic" here ...
Kevin Spacey is the teacher who asked the students to come
up with ideas so they could change the world. He wasn't
expecting it to go *that* far of course. Oh, he also has
some burns on his face so that this can be used from time
to time during the movie to make us feel sorry for him,
etc.
Jay Mohr is a journalist who is trying to find out more
about this "Pay it forward" system and Jon Bon Jovi has a
small role has Hunt's ex-husband and Osment's ex-dad ...
The acting is great of course, 2 Oscar winners in there and
the boy from "The sixth sense" proves that his Oscar
nomination wasn't a fluke. Spacey and Hunt are both good
although some twists here and there are hard to swallow ...
(How could Spacey act like that with Hunt near the end, I
mean she treated him like DIRT, as if he was a no good BUM
and suddenly, the very next day he's all hoochie-coochie
... Mmmmmm ... I guess he wasn't too fussy ...)
Osment helps a homeless man, Spacey's character and also a
lil' friend of his who is always pushed around by bullies
... Things don't go as planned and it is difficult to make
the system works ... but don't worry, this is "Hollywood"
after all ... Yes, it is very predictable in part, besides
an unusual twist near the end of course ...
I was enjoying the film up until the last 15 minutes or so
when it turned overly sentimental and "sooo obvious" all of
a sudden ... which is a shame ... I have to penalize it
slightly (Minus 0.5/5 !) for this !
I was reminded of "Forrest gump" and "As good as it gets"
while watching it ...
For your information :
Roger Ebert : 2.5/4
James Berardinelli : 3/4

Subject: [MV] A shock to the system - 1990
I watched this one last night, my 2nd time seeing it.
4/5 !
Excellent thriller about a man who works in the marketing
dept. of a company (Michael Caine, Hooray !) and is married
to an annoying and over spending wife (Swoozie Kurtz) ...
The problem is that even if he is a big kahuna at work, he
still is unfairly overlooked for a promotion and the new
boss treats him like dirt, making him feel inferior all the
time ... Elisabeth McGovern also has a part as Caine's
assistant.
This new younger and richer boss angers him of course so he
devises this plan to get rid of the two people who are
making his life harder ... his wife and his new boss ...
He realizes he can do this and get away with it because he
is so smart. Makes up a perfect alibi, covers his tracks.
etc. Will Patton is a cop who tries to catch him in a lie
but Caine is so slippery it is actually funny in part ...
Dark humor !
This is top notch material, if you like Michael Caine, you
HAVE to see it ... run to the nearest video store !!
Excellent script, dialogues ... Caine is so evil, yet you
can't help to feel sorry for him because of all those
people in his life who take advantage of his kindness.
Cheers !
Marc ;-)

Subject: [MV] Candyman 2 (1995)
I just saw part of this on TV ... wow ... it has to be one
of the worst sequels to a horror film ever, "The exorcist.
part 2" and "Psycho II" come to mind as well ...
I had to stop watching after the first 40 minutes because
I was incredibly bored ... it was ridiculous !!
Lousy story !! (Who are all these people ??) I saw the
first film 2-3 times and I couldn't identify anybody ...
Did they start over or what ?? Only Todd is there again as
the evil dude, well, he appears for a good 3 minutes in the
part I saw !! This guy was mumbling about his father being
killed ... Zzzzz !
The acting and the dialogues are sub par ... It was
embarassing .. plenty of scary moments that are just cheap
tricks ... Loud noise as we see someone appearing suddenly,
but you know it's just "BS" ...
They even try the ooooooooold "double fake scare" trick
(I said that like Maxwell Smart from CONTROL !) ... i.e.
When you have a "fake scare" and then 5 seconds later
another one that is supposed to be even scarier except this
idea is so used up it's highly inadequate nowadays ...
I predicted that one actually !!
0.5/5 (I gave 3.5/5 to the original 1992 film)
Cheers, Candyman !

Subject: [MV] One-two punch, Roberts vs Bullock !
Alright, I was asked recently to give all my ratings for
the Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock movies I saw ... so
here it goes ... chronological order !
Julia Roberts
- -------------
1990 Pretty woman - 2/5
1990 Flatliners - 3/5
1991 Sleeping with the enemy - 3.5/5
1992 The player - 3.5/5 (Cameo)
1993 The pelican brief - 2/5
1994 I love trouble - 2/5
1996 Everyone says I love you - 2/5
1997 My best friend's wedding - 2/5
1997 Conspiracy theory - 2.5/5
2000 Erin Brockovich - 3/5
Batting average (3/5 or more required !)
... 3/9 ... 33% !!
I don't count "The player" since it's just a cameo ...
Sandra Bullock
- --------------
1991 Love potion No. 9 2/5
1993 Demolition man 2/5
1993 The vanishing 3.5/5
1994 Speed 4/5
1995 While you were sleeping 3/5
1995 The net 3/5
1996 A time to kill 3.5/5
1996 In love and war 2/5
1997 Speed 2 : Cruise control 1.5/5
1998 Hope floats 1.5/5
1998 Practical magic 1.5/5
1999 Forces of nature 3/5 (ducking !)
Batting average ... 3/5 or more required ...
6/12 = 50%
They are both making movies that are not very appealing to
me these days though ... so if I would actually watch
"Runaway bride" "Nothing hill" "American sweethearts" or
"28 days" "Miss Congeniality" "Gun shy" ... they would no
doubt get very low ratings ... 2/5 or less expected.
Cheers !
Marc ;-)
