What, me exaggerate?? Never:-)
But seriously, the studios are looking towards Australia for the same
reason they look to Vancouver and Toronto, to save money. Plus, unless you
are shooting a Christmas movie, the weather usually co-operates.
I mean, Uncle Rupert built a huge soundstage, etc for his Fox Studios, as
he plans on making more and more films there. And most of the other
studios are at least considering following suit.

... you forget I am not a native English speaker. But, I am kind-a
puzzled. What's wrong with "had her"? Too possessive? Or "experienced
her"? Too liberal? Nowadays women are progressively being involved in
"emancipation of women", thus, these colloquials may be appropriate for
those women that chose the highest possible privacy: mating with the
invisible man. Wow! In such cases they do not need to worry if they are
going to be seen "with someone" and they still get a "sustainable
quantity" of satisfaction. However, in this case it proves to be fatal
... which could lead to yet another assumption: there has to be
"emancipation of men" too. If such emancipation existed, the scenario
of the "Invisible man" could'ave been totally different?
(movie that deals with "emancipation of women": "Tootsie" and beautiful
role of Dustn Hoffman)

Here in Yugoslavia most of the movies nowadays are ... american! Some are from
the other countries (french or italian movies), but predominantly we see
Hollywood products. That's why perhaps very little is known of the "down under"
film production and something should be done to improve the relationship
between Australia and Yugoslavia as far as the film industry is concerned?
There are many "fresh" (new) yugoslav movies that (I can bet) have not been
seen in Australia yet.
As to "Road warrior", well ... it was one of the "most liberal" movie that was
shot at that time! And one could see that it was an "omen" that could be
applied to the current ecological situation in the world: not enough fuel, but
not because there isn't any, it is because the ozone layer is seriously
depleted! (one could do a remake of the "Road warrior" and make Mel Gibson put
some heavy factor protection on his skin or wear a totally masked uniform
againts the UV sun-rays?; I am not saying that he would accept such offer ...
but getting a sun-tan today's almost like getting a sun-burn!)

But since english is not your first language, I'll let it

I am sure there are. Heck, The Dish isn't even widely available in this
bastion of internationalism where I find myself exiled:-) But the Yanks
are shooting more and more movies overseas, in part to get the more exotic
locals, but also to cut labour costs.
Even Croc Dundee 3 had an Eastern European plot point to it.

Mission: Impossible 2

Not especially, but I think more and more are being shot there because
there are such exotic locals. Parts of the Outback could easily pass for
an alien planet.

Well, it is in New Zealand. Like the Canadians, they have very little
culture of their own :-) (ducks and covers), and think of themselves as
pseudo-Aussies.

Long story about the name:-) It is memorable, tho. In the shop, we rent
videos, like any other video store, but we also sell Australian Rules
Football merchandise on the net. (And **I** named the store... why do you
ask???:-)

**** Oh please ... (Rolling my eyes back !) .. This might
be true for english canadians ... but as a french canadian
I can say this is ludicrous ! You can tell in 2 seconds
that we're not like the Yanks .. Heck, we speak french
*here* buddy ... only a "detail" ... The culture here is

aussies are very patriotic (AUSSIE OI !!) but that doesn't
mean they are better than everyone else, including the

Oh, you would be surprised. Just like the Brits in The Patriot, crys of
"unfair" are rather unfounded, and if anything, there were things that
happened in the military that make what happened in this movie tame by
comparison.
Notice how most of the people that really gave Cuba a hard time had a
southern accent?? At the time, especially in the "Good Ol Boy" networks in
the military and other institutions, racism was not only prevelant, but
even expected.
No, it wasn't that bad everywhere, and it wasn't every white person, but
treatment like this was almost expected by anyone that broke the colour
barrier. Just look at Jackie Robinson, who did it in baseball (heaps of
movies about that), or worse yet, the second black baseball player (who
didn't have the support system and backing that Robinson did). The
Hispanics had it even worse, cause no one wanted them to play. (One of the
first, and best, Hispanics to ever play that game, Roberto Clemente, still
doens't get the respect he deserves).

Well, I am biased, because I thought this was a great film, and felt it was
rooked at the Oscars by not even getting a nomination. But I thought the
film was a masterpiece from the very first scene.
Also, I am biased because the film was shot around here, set around here,
and the writer went to University in the area. (I know people that know
him. Not well. But still it is a nice claim:-) Also, the writer, Mr
Chabon, won a Pulitizer for his follow-up book, The Adventures of Cavilier
and Klay. (Not sure of the spelling, and I am too lazy to go back on the
bookshelf and see what the name is)
Also, the DVD has some bonus features that give you some background into
the characters and the setting. It explains some of the less-obvious stuff
they were striving for. Every character here was on a journey, looking for
something. They all had bridges to cross. The movie was shot in a city
famous for it's bridges (only Venice, Italy has more), and bridges feature
promanently in the movie.
Also, the humour is there, but is not hit-over-the-head humour, like in
most modern comedies. It was subtle. It was dark, but not too dark, like
American Beauty or Fargo. As a matter of fact, to me this movie was the
lighter side of American Beauty.

But Downey is such a tremendous actor. He does everything he is in well,
straight or strung-out. Unfortunately, he does not do well outside of the
soundstage.
For two hours, tho, I was able to forget that this is one seriously
screwed-up individual.

And that all comes from the (novel) writing. Chabon is a literary genius.
(And is younger than me [actually, about the same age], and has already won
a Pulitizer. How much better will he get??) I would even go so far as
saying this is the best adaptation of a novel I have ever seen, and he is
directly responsible for the deep character development.
>. Michael Douglas has gained new

Douglas also had a great turn in Traffic, playing someone completely
opposite his character here. Matter of fact, I think Douglas could have
won an Oscar for either role. McDormand also had two strong performances
last year. And McGuire and Downey each could have laid claim to the
Supporting Actor nod.
I think this movie suffered not only from the release schedule (movies this
good do NOT come out in Feburary. This is a December movie), but also
because everyone here did such a great acting job, and in some cases, also
did a great job in another movie. Effectively, they split the vote for
themselves when it was time to nominate performances.
(snip discussion of the other performers, as I have already addressed them)

Marc, Marc, Marc.... you gotta let yourself go, get lost in the moment
here, buddy. The humour is subtle, it might not hit you until five minutes
later, or even the next day, why such and such was just so funny. And like
Fargo, the humour was quite regional, too. The movie was set here, and the
characters are based on people the author knew (and some that I know).
There were, quite deservedly, taken down a peg or two, and that is what
hekped make this movie enjoyable to me.

Sorry, Marc, but I am on the verge of giving this movie 5 out of 5. It is
one of those rare films that works for me. The only reason I have not put
this in my top-10 movies list, is that means taking something else out:-)
I'll get around to that eventually, tho, maybe after I have seen this movie
three or four dozen times more.

haven't been exposed to a lot of these issues ... World War
II, racism in the US Army, etc. Most people around here
are more tolerant anyway, or at least it is not as apparent
as in the movie where Cuba was going through a lot to

Subject: [MV] The X-Files - 1998
Ok, I watched the X-Files movie tonight ... and I was
fairly impressed, 3.5/5.
I thought it was a smart and entertaining science-fiction
film all the way through ... Good dialogues, acting,
special effects used appropriately, exciting action scenes.
Contrarely to "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"
I actually cared about the characters here and what would
happen to them. (Poor lil' Scully ... snif ! ;-( ... )
I have to admit that I had never seen an X-Files TV episode
before, so when I started watching the film I didn't even
know if David Duchovny's character was Mulder or if he was
Scully ... and vice versa with Gillian Anderson, Is she
Mulder or Scully ?? Scully or Mulder ?? ... Shame on me but
at least I found out while watching the movie ! hehe ! ;-)
The story was interesting ... It started with a bomb being
planted in a huge building to destroy some evidence related
to the presence of ALIENS on Earth of course. The blown
up building kind of looked like the Alfred P. Murrah
(spelling ?) building in Oklahoma City after McVeigh,
Nichols and company bombed it though ...
I felt it was a bit inappropriate to use this kind of twist
in a movie, they could have thought of something else after
all. Nothing *major* but I thought I would mention it since
it bothered me a little.
I was intrigued by the story and felt it was material
produced by "smart" people ... more intriguing than a lot
of other sci-fi films produced each year ...
I have complaints about the sound though, the film was
extremely loud in part and then when the characters were
talking it was hard to understand what they were saying
because of that ...
Marc ;-)

Well, since I gave the Canadians such a hard time before (and Marc, please
understand... it was a JOKE!!! Some of my best friends are Canadian. Of
course, one of them lives in WinterPeg, so he really doesn't have any
culture... :-), now I must defend them.
Most Canadians I talk to cannot fathom racism (at least against
blacks/African-Americans.... Native Americans/Canadians/Injuns are another
story entirely) because it simply has never existed north of the
border. Going all the way back to the US Civil War and earlier (the
Underground Railroad), many escaped slaves headed to Canada because it was
one of the few places they were accepted. (Even in the northern US states,
where slavery was illegal, the escaped slaves didn't have any rights, and
could even be treated as property, and returned to their "masters")
So, I fully understand why you couldn't believe the movie was anywhere near
what they protrayed. (and yes, there was a lot of artistic licence taken),
simply because this has NEVER been a part of Canadian culture.

Well, it was exaggerated, but not by much. Most likely, no superior
officer would take action against a racist, because there would be a good
ol southern boy above him that would take the side of the racist recruits.
Besides, in the movie, no one had any respect to begin with for DeNiro's
character. So, his pull with his own troops would be minimal, at
best. Also, never underestimate the herd mentality in people, especially
those in some sort of organisation, like the military.

Nope, I am an Australian living in "exile" in the States. Have not been

I wasn't going to bother responding here (nothing personal, just wanted to

today. Funny, that. Have not watched it in years, and suddenly we watch
it the same day.

Well, the producers/writers/directors/et al faced quite a challenge
here. How to make this movie interesting for the true fan, the ubergeek
that has every bit of dialogue memorised, yet include the person that had
never ever seen the movie, and had no idea who these people were, and why
you should care about what happens to them.

Now, don't quote me on the timeline here, but I believe this was at least
planned before Oklahoma City. I know one movie (might have been Arlington
Road) had its release date changed because it either was too soon after the
bombing, or was due around either an anniversary or a major development in
McVeigh's court case. I do know there was some serious concern about
including this, but it was so intergral to the plot, there was little way
around including it.
>I have complaints about the sound though, the film was

But it seems that EVERY movie is like that anymore. I saw this in the
theatre on opening night, and recall it being quite loud. Even today (I
was working whilst it was on), I didn't follow it that closely, but it did
seem to emphasise the action and noise.
I am wondering, did you watch this on video or DVD?? I would think the DVD
would be even worse, especially if you have it hooked up to surround sound.

culture here in Quebec is completely different from the
rest of Canada as you probably know ... heck, why do you
think we have all those issues here about "separating" from
the rest of Canada, we hardly have anything in common ...
french/english issues, etc. Whenever I go to Ontario

**** Oh, I'm sure there is some racism here but I am always
surprised how in The states it seems to be soooooooo
crucial, Black and white issues ... For example over there
when describing a trial procedure, they would say that a
jury is composed of 5 Blacks, 5 Whites, 2 hispanics ...
bla-bla ... as if that would determine in advance how they
would vote ... here those details would not be mentioned

Frankly, I was disappointed with it. Perhaps I was expecting too much.
Spending two hours watching someone pretend that everything was O.K. when it
was not was not my idea of an inspiring movie.

Yes it is!
You can lift a car using a 1.5 V battery. The electromagnet needs to be
designed in a very efficient (and large) manner. Many turns of thin wire
are required and the core is made of "permalloy" instead of iron.

Wouldn't that girl (in the regrigerator) get electric
