Subject: [MV] Jake's Top 10 Movies
***** Adding comments and ratings to your list, Jake ! (You were quite
"busy" today ... hehe ! Several e-mails ... I shall send comments about
some of your reviews later ... like Brokedown palace or Final destination)
In case anyone's interested, I've compiled a list of the top 10
movies I've enjoyed over my long life of 20 years ;-) Hopefully I
can remember them all! This is very hard to do let me tell you!
**** Not hard for me since I have a list of my 250 favorite films of all
times actually ... ;o) I'll list my own Top 10 at the end of this e-mail.
Jake's Top 10 ...
- ------------------
10 - Barton Fink (1991)
Having seen this one for the first time just this year means it's
pretty special being on my top 10 list! Check out the great
character development and storyline, people!
***** 3.5/5, liked this one a lot but I prefer other Coen brothers' films
... especially FARGO ...
9 - Evil Dead 2 (1987)
I fell really guilty putting this one on my top 10 list but I
find it hard to believe someone would not like it unless they
completely despise anything horror related.. period.
***** 2.5/5, I don't really care for it but I know a few people who also
love this one ... 2.5/5 for the original Evil dead as well ...
8 - Sword of Many Loves (1992)
You think the Matrix had advanced visuals? You haven't seen
action unless you've checked out what Hong Kong's guys have been
doing for years! The visuals in this movie are years ahead of
Hollywood because they don't overdo and wash them out with digitally
enhanced poopah effects and eyecandy.
***** Never seen this one !
7 - Four Rooms (1995)
Four rooms in a hotel directed by four different directors with
Tim Roth the bellboy bouncing to each. Genius!
***** Wow, I am surprised as I have read critics that were saying this movie
was indeed GODAWFUL, so this is why I never watched it myself even if it is
available here ...
6 - Reservoir Dogs (1992)
One of the most violent movies I've seen--- can't get enough of
it!
***** I am agreeing ... and grinning !! 5/5, also in my own Top 10 ... in
7th place.
5 - Fargo (1996)
Can't get enough of smalltown indie-ish movies starring Steve
Buscemi either :-)
****** Loving it !! 5/5, also in my top 10 ... but in 6th place.
4 - Gattaca (1997)
This movie shows exactly what I've always thought the future will
be like. People will be hired based on their genetics which of
course will be illegal but still practised. VERY good storyline!
****** Very good, 3.5/5 .. actually the first time I saw this one I didn't
think it was so good ... 2.5/5 ... but I kept thinking about it so I watched
it again a couple of years later and it is indeed great ... not sure why I
didn't care for it much the first time around ...
3 - The Neverending Story (1984)
The storyline haunted me as a child and it was one of my favorite
movies growing up. Part of it was filmed in my hometown of Vancouver
as well!
***** Never seen !
2 - The Shining (1980)
Other than the fact that this movie scared the bejeezees out of
me when I was seven, I still regard this movie as one of the best.
Even now I rent this one at least once every year or two.
***** Don't have to rent it myself cos' I own it of course ! 5/5, seen it
on numerous occasions ... it misses my Top 10 though ... ending up around
#12 or 13 ... still high quality material ...
1 - UHF (1989)
What more can I say about this movie than watch it already!?!
Please tell me what you think! Thanks,
- - Iceman
***** Never seen this ... hanging my head down in SHAME !! Oh, you're so
cool, iceman !
Well, here is my own Top 10 ...
1-Goodfellas - 1990
2-Leaving Las Vegas - 1995
3-Pulp fiction - 1994
4-Taxi driver - 1976
5-Casino - 1995
6-Fargo - 1996
7-Reservoir dogs - 1992
8-Silence of the lambs - 1990(1991 ?)
9-Titanic - 1997
10-Natural born killers - 1994

This movie is actually a homage to the great WW2 film, Stalag 17. (Which is
the lesser known movie similar to The Great Escape).
I love Nick Park's work. (He is famous for Wallace and Grommit and
Creature Comforts, and anytime he has a short film to submit to the
Academy, he seems to win the Oscar for that year)
Great choice, Mark. The first time I tried to watch it, I wasn't able to
get into it (too many interruptions), but I am eager to try again.

Marc ;-)

****** Well, I don't really care for animated films usually and to tell you
the truth if Chicken run had been made in the "usual" animated way, with
drawings, not as a "stop-and-go" animated film I would have been much less
interested in seeing it in the first place ... the fact it was stop-and-go
animation made it more original and made it a lot more appealing ... I would
probably have seen it anyway had it been made in the more usual way though
... hard to say if I would have liked it as much ! The stop-and-go animation
gave it a very special "look" ...
I am just TURNED OFF big time by most films that are animated, especially
the
ones that are sponsored by McDonalds or Burger king, those are for KIDS ...
movies like Rugrats in Paris for example ... and it's ok, kids deserve to go
to the movies sometimes (if they are niiiiiice, of course !)
I didn't even like Toy story and Toy story 2 which most people loved ... and
I stay away from the usual Disney films like Tarzan, Beauty and the beast,
The little mermaid, The lion king ... never seen any of those and I am not
interested either, too many other movies out
there already so I skip the animated Disney films !
Those movies are more for kids, I understand they can be enjoyed by adults
too though, but I doubt I would like them much anyway ... great visuals but
the stories ??
The reasons I liked Chicken run so much :
- - Stop and go animation, awesome special effects.
- - Some dark moments, i.e. References to concentration camps, this film was
not really for very little children.
Good story.
- - Many good reviews stating this was not for children only.
- - Made by the creators of Wallace and Gromitt. (spelling ??)
- - Contains scenes with "Dancin' chicks" ... this is of course very appealing
!! ;-)
I will see Titan A.E. though as it looks cool and not really for children
either ... I want to see animated films that are more "serious" or adult
oriented
basically and those are few and far between ...
Titan A.E. was a disaster at the box office too ... cost a lot of money to
make and was in-and-out of the movie theaters...was it because it didn't
appeal to young kids ??? That should tell you something !
G'day to you !
Marc ;o)

To lump all animated films together makes as much sense as someone saying they
wouldn't like PULP FICTION because they hated ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES
and both are live action.
> ones that are sponsored by McDonalds or Burger king, those are for KIDS
CHICKEN RUN had a promotional deal with one of those companies (I don't
remember which one).

I suggest that you at least attempt to watch a few of these films. Some are
better than others, but to not give any of them a chance means you could be
denying yourself a great experience. For the record, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is
one of my favorite films of all time.
> I want to see animated films that are more "serious" or adult
> oriented basically and those are few and far between ...
There are more out there than you think, including the Disney movies mentioned
above. Here's a couple more recommendations
THE IRON GIANT -- perfect blend of stories: the main story appeals greatly to
kids, but the underlying current is a serious story for adults. It bombed at
the box office due to a disastrous marketing campaign by Warner, but was loved
by the few of us who saw it. Made a lot of "Best of" lists for 1999...pretty
impressive considering the quality of film last year. It should be noted that
this film is free of song-and-dance numbers and talking animal sidekicks.
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES -- an example of a very heavy, very dark animated film.
Unlike CHICKEN RUN and some of the other films mentioned, this is a purely
adult story (even though the main characters are children) and based on true
events in postwar Japan.
I know you like "darker" films, Marc, so I'll have to give honorable mention
to BABE: PIG IN THE CITY. Although it's not truly an animated film, it's
similar. Easily the darkest "kids" film I've ever seen, and very good.
Indeed, at the screening I went to, a little girl was literally screaming in
horror through the whole thing. Makes the first BABE (which had its own dark
moments) look very tame in comparison. It comes as no surprise that it comes
from George Miller (maker of the MAD MAX films).

of people would place them together, i.e. VIDEO STORE OWNERS for example !!
Had
to go in the "kiddie's animated movies' section" to find "Chicken run" ...

(know her a lil' bit and she knows I like NASTY STUFF often !) ... she

Well, this film is special because it would appeal not only to kids but to
older folks as well, so this is why I was interested in seeing it in the

***** Yeah, I knooooooow ... I might be too CYNICAL/SARCASTIC to enjoy those
types of films ... the oh-so Hollywood storylines, happy la-la endings,
predictable twists and turns ... etc. Maybe I would like them, I am
thinking "Oh, they are "kid's movies" now ... it's like a natural reflex,
when a movie is animated it has 2 strikes against it from the get go with
me, unless I read some comments that are saying it is a "must see" and not

Personally, I thought THE IRON GIANT was far and away the best animated
movie in the last couple of years, although I liked TOY STORY 2 as well.
CHICKEN RUN was interesting and fun, but not quite up to my expectations.
I find the stop-action "claymation" type of animation technique a bit
tiring after a while. Tim Burton's NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS uses it to
good effect, but then Burton's boundless imagination is the key. Because
the setting and the story are so surreal, the technique seemed appropriate.
The setting of CHICKEN RUN, in contrast, is supposed to be "realistic" --
even grim -- and the technique works against this.

The way a film looks is no indicator of content. Within animation, there are
several vastly-different looking films: CGI, stop-motion, cell, etc. Within
each of those styles are many different looks as well. For instance, A BUGS
LIFE and ANTZ were both CGI films about ants, but both films looked very
different.
Also, I wouldn't consider the owner of a video store to be the last word on a
movie's genre.
> Yeah, I knooooooow ... I might be too CYNICAL/SARCASTIC to enjoy those

I agree that many American animated films are guilty of these types of
storylines, but then again so is TITANIC and most other live-action American
film.
Again: the style in which a film is made is no indicator of content.

Hi marc; My take on animated filme is close to yours, I much prefer the
more adult ones, like AntZ I watched it again last night & I loved it,
Chicken Run seem something I may like also. I will wait tho till it gets
on cable
Most Disney films have never been my real cup of tea. for the most part
they are enjoyable, but rarely great (this is from an adult standpoint ONLY)
& manyof the older ones should have a PG rating as I remeber being
frightened by some when I was a youngster (creeping shadows & jumping
animals scared the daylights out of me)
.
Changing the subject I ordered some videos form a web site & because it
was over a certain amoint I am recieving free video The give yu a choice
of 4 & the only one that appealed to me was (you only live twice) the
james Bond one what is yr take on this one. the film books didnt care
for it *& i do not remeber it .
Can we plug film reference guides here. If so I just got the new TLA
film guide
& even this they give to many films 4 stars its a darn good reference
book
as always

Hey, I RESENT that remark:-) Most of us are truly knowledgable and care
about the art form. Then again, we do have to present a certain format to
the customers, such as grouping all the animated/childrens films together.
To the unwashed masses, these are one of the same. As they said in Clerks,
this job would be great if it wasn't for the customers:-) (Hey, I acutally
do love and respect them, but sometimes the conversations I have with them
cause as much of a brainrot as watching Battlefield Earth did)
And, besides, a lot of time it is the workers behind the counter that cause
the majority of problems. But don't even get me started on the dearth of
quality Yank employees:-)

Subject: [MV] Movies Diane Watches Over and Over
***** Adding **bits** to yours, Diane !! With stars in front ! Marc ;-)
I have never really made a list here before, so I decided to go through my
video cabinets and pick out a list. This list I call "Movies to Watch Over
and Over". The title is self explanatory, but I would also like to add that
there are titles of movies I really liked but are not on the list because I
couldn't watch them "over and over" (i.e. "The Sixth Sense"). Diane
**** Why wouldn't you want to see it again ?? I think it's a fine film
myself so I purchased it of course in order to see it whenever I feel like
it ! (My sister thinks I'm crazy cos' I have seen "Schindler's list" 3
times already ... she recognizes it's a very good film but just couldn't
watch it more than once though, so she probably feels just like you !)
Anyway, check out the list, see what you think, make comments if you'd
like...especially you, Marc :o)
***** Oh my ! ;-)
These films are in no particular order, but if it's one I especially like a
lot, I will put a *** by it :o)
1) Ghost in the Darkness
**** 3/5, good film, much better than I expected actually. I had passed on
it for years thinking it was going to be awful after reading plenty of
negative comments but it's not **that** bad !
2) The Mummy (Frasier)
***** No no no non !! Brendan Frasier is a MAJOR repellant for me ... I just
can't stand him, makes me cringe big time, I have hated all the films I have
seen with him and I am not interested in seeing most of 'em anyway ... like
"Bedazzled" "Blast from the past" "The mummy" ... I think he would be in my
Top 5, most loathed actors !!
3) The Matrix
***** 3/5, good choice. Well made technically, visuals, etc. I don't
really care for the story that much but it looks so good I have to give it a
little break !
4) Con Air ***
**** 3/5, Good one as well although you have to put your brain in the
neutral position of course ! Most people hate that one too but I thought it
was entertaining ...
5) Face/Off
***** 3/5, Not a big John Woo fan myself ... all those violent scenes in
slo-motion ... This one is watchable of course but the ending is way over
the top, enough already, both of those boys should have been killed like 79
times with all that firepower ... I would prefer it if they should only have
been killed 19 times myself ...
6) Braveheart ***
**** 4.5/5, great one ! Seen it several times too, maybe 3 ... Love the
music as well and I own the soundtrack.
7) Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves ***
***** 3/5, A lot of people hate it too, you are brave putting that title in
your list .. ;-) I saw it again about a year ago and it's not awful but I
wouldn't watch it over-and-over ... maybe once every 10-15 years ... ;-)
8) Armageddon
***** Not seen due to awful reviews and comments ... plus saw the trailer,
bits ... looks pretty bad to me ... and it was picked by several critics as
one of the worst films that year.
9) LadyHawke ***
**** Not seen
10) Willow
**** Not seen
11) Independence Day
***** Ewwwwwwk ... this was bad ... 1.5/5, Good special effects but that's
about it. Will smith is also a repellant although not as bad as Brendan
Frasier.
12) Jurrasic Park ***
***** 4/5, welcome - - - to Jurassic park ! Yes, excellent film, good
story, special effects ...
13) The Lost World (JP2)
**** 2/5 ? Nah, that one made me cringe, some parts were so silly too,
wished Jeff Goldblum would have been eaten by the T-REX in the first one ...
Good effects but the difference between JP1 and JP2 is the story is a lot
less interesting ...
14) Contact
*** 2.5/5, not too bad - - or good ... Jodie Foster is a great actress
though. What's the deal with McConnaughey in that one ?? Was making me
cringe as the annoying priest ! Good supporting characters like James Woods
and Angela Bassett are wasted, not enough screen time !
15) Forrest Gump ***
**** 4/5, excellent !! Again you are courageous to place this one in your
list !! Where is Titanic ?? It's one that also annoys a lot of people !!
I liked Gump better the 2nd time around, the first time I thought 3.5/5 ...
Hank is great and Sinise as well ... Robin Wright-Penn, oh my ... I liked it
too because it was sometimes funny-sometimes touching ...
16) Monty Python & the Holy Grail ***
17) The Lion King ***
18) Mulan
19) The Neverending Story ***
***** Not seen any of those.
20) Star Wars Trilogy ***
**** Star Wars : 3.5/5 The empire strikes back : 3.5/5
Return of the Jedi : 3/5 Good films but I am not a huge fan either even if
I should be considering I was 7 when the first one was released ... ;-)
Still entertaining and I have seen all 3 maybe 5-7 times at least.
21) The Mask of Zorro (Banderas)
***** 2/5 ?? Banderas, ewwwwwk ! He's almost as bad as Brendan Frasier,
making me cringe ... I didn't care for this story at all, plenty of silly
bits, Hopkins as the "trainer" .. hehe ! That lil' Catherine Zeta-Jones was
lovely though, phew, I remember that sword fight scene ... sexy ! ;-)
22) Air Force One
**** 4/5, great action film, I like it more than most people probably ...
Harrison Ford is among my favorite actors too ... Oldman is great as the
villain. It's a wild ride.
23) G.I. Jane ***
**** 3/5, you liked that, Diane, huh ... A girl kicking butts !! ;-) I
thoguht it was ok but nothing so special myself ... especially that last
part "in combat" ... I was almost slipping down to 2.5 by the end ...
24) Dragonheart ***
**** Not seen
25) Men in Black
**** 2.5/5, Will Smith ... Good effects but it's a bit too silly for me ...
26) Pulp Fiction ***
**** 5/5, seen it 10 times at least ! Incredible cast (and crew !)
Tarantino is an amazing director, a few of his films in my Top 10
favorites. This is a perfect film.
27) The Princess Bride
28) Half-Baked
**** Not seen, not seen.
29) The Hitcher
**** 4/5, wow ! Someone else likes this one ... yay !! Roger Ebert picked
it as one of the worse films of 1986 but I loved it, always been one of my
favorites even though I wouldn't argue too much with someone who would say
it's awful ... perfect example of a GUILTY pleasure film ... seen it 10
times at least.
30) Die Hard Series
*** Die hard : 4.5/5 Great action flick, plenty of one liners ... it's a
good CHRISTMAS film too ... OOps . . maybe not !
*** Die hard 2: Die harder : 3.5/5
Very Good but not at the same level as the original.
*** Die hard 3 : with a vengance : 2.5/5
Never really clicked for that one ...
*** Die hard 4 : Die die die : 1.5/5 ;-)
4.5-3.5-2.5 ... 1.5 !
31) Highlander (#1)
** not seen
32) 12 Monkeys
*** 3/5, good but I wouldn't rave about it. I like Willis, Pitt and Stowe
... A lot of people love this one too.
33) Twister
***** 1.5/5, terrible !! Like ID4, good special effects but the story is
way silly ... should have been called
"7 tornadoes in 70 minutes" ... now that's a movie title !
34) Beaches
** not seen
35) The Crow
*** 3.5/5, very good film. It's dark and grim for sure.
36) Bram Stoker's Dracula (Oldman)
**** 2.5/5, don't really care for this one, "Vampire films" are not my cup
of tea.
37) The Breakfast Club *** (a HUGE fave of mine)
**** 4/5. Excellent and contrarely to "Ferri Bueller's day off" for example
I still like it as much today as I did back then in 1985 ... I am guessing
you are between 28 and 32 years old if you really like this film ... ;-)
Mmmmm ... since you like some nasty vampire, action films as well, I would
even say ... 28 to 30 years old ?? ;-)
38) The Long Kiss Goodnight ***
**** Again ... girl kicking butts !! ;-) You would love Charlie's angels !
2.5/5 for this film ... You're such an ACTION FREAK, Diane !
39) Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan
40) Star Trek VI : Undiscovered Country
41) Star Trek NG : First Contact
42) Star Trek NG : Insurrection
**** not seen any of the Star Trek films.
43) Seven
***** 5/5, also one of my favorites. Pitt, Freeman, Spacey, Fincher ... oh
my !! I like many serial killer movies too, where is Silence of the lambs
?? ;-) They don't make enough good movies like these ... Looking forward
to "Hannibal" thoguh !
44) When Harry Met Sally *** (another big fave)
**** 2.5/5, never really liked it but I am not the target audience probably
... ;-) Billy Crystal is annoying me more often than not ... example : City
Slickers.
45) Alien series
**** Alien : 4.5/5
Aliens : 5/5
Alien 3 : 3.5/5
Alien resurrection : 2/5
Discussed this just recently ! Ref. "Don't resurrect this alien !"
46) Teminator 1 & 2
**** Terminator : 4/5
Terminator 2 : 4/5 as well.
Both with the same rating but I like the original Terminator a lil' more ...
47) Hellraiser 1 & 2
**** Hellraiser 1 : 3/5, never seen the other ones ! Wow, you watch that
film over and over Diane ?? A bit nasty !!
48) Raiders of the Lost Ark series
Raider of the loast ark 4.5/5
The temple of doom : 4/5
The last crusade : 4/5
Discussed recently as well ... I loved all 3 films !
49) Legends of the Fall ***
**** I found that one very boring myself ... 1/5 or less.
50) The Seventh Sign
*** With Demi Moore ?? 2.5/5 !
51) Interview with the Vampire ***
**** Not a fan of vampire flicks .. 2.5/5
52) Blade *** (this movie we have watched dozens of times)
*** Not a fan of vampire flicks ... and WESLEY SNIPES as well ! It's like a
double-whammy ! ;-)
53) The Patriot
**** Not seen yet, coming up soon.
54) Gladiator
**** not seen yet, coming up soon.
55) X-Men
***** Not seen yet, coming up soon.
56) The Usual Suspects
**** 3.5/5, good film, great acting, liked it more the 2nd time around.
57) Backdraft ***
**** 2.5/5
58) Lake Placid ***
59) Deep Blue Sea
Diane
***** Wowo, what are those films doing in there ... you mean you like those
2 more than Jaws ?? phew !! Lake placid, 1.5/5, Deep blue sea, 2/5 ...
They both are rather awful in my opinion ... Plenty of silly bits, Wow, I
remember in Lake Placid, all those awful parts making me roll my eyes back
BIG TIME !
Well, overall it is a bit strange vecause I agree with a lot of your
choices but there are also a few that are indeed perplexing, wondering why
you would like to watch those over and over ... movies like Lake Placid and
Deep blue sea for example .. Independance day, Twister ...
Glad you like those more though !
I'll send a list with my own favorites ... later !
B'bye !
Marc ;o)

Subject: [MV] The Greatest Movies of All (My) Time
Well, since everyone else is doing it, I thought it might be worthwhile to
once again publish my favourite films of all time. Especially since I was
discussing these with some friends the other day, before they picked out
some movies to watch at the week-end.
10. Back to the Future
Everytime you watch it, you will notice something new.
9 Animal House
Lived it, learned it, knew it:-) Classic (which really describes every
movie on here)
8 The Hunt for Red October
Would be higher, except the films above it are so much better.
7 La Femme Nikita
Watched the horrid Yank remake (Point of No Return) the day after seeing it
for the first time. No comparison.
6 The Year My Voice Broke
Wonderful, simply wonderful. Australian coming-of-age movie. For some
reason I cannot figure, most US critics rate the sequel (Flirting), where
Nic and Thandie (both Tom Cruise girls) got thier start. You could argue
that Strictly Ballroom or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert are better, but
this one simply appeals to me. After all, this is MY list:-)
5 The Usual Suspects
Another one that could very well be higher, if I didn't feel so strongly
about what is above.
4 Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
After the too-long, too-boring Star Trek: The Motion Picture, this was a
home run. I like this slightly better than First Contact, but it has
history on it's side.
3 Star Wars
Used to be my number one movie.... then I grew up:-) Yes, Empire is
better, yes, it has not aged all that well, yes, it puts me to sleep,
always has. But this is my generation's mythology. Gotta respect it for
that.
2 Casablanca
Arguably the Greatest Love Story of All Time. An "adult" movie (ie,
replaced Star Wars after I grew up), it shows the nobility of sacrifice,
and love conquering all. Like many of the "classics", it gets better with
time. Not very well received at first (neither were Citizen Kane or It's A
Wonderful Life, for two other examples)
and the best of the best:
The Big Chill
Always liked it, but having reached "that certain age" (ie, of the
characters in the movie), and having seen it so many times, it is the other
"adult" movie that I have grown into.

Sorry about that. I didn't mean to imply that video store owners were
ignorant or disparage you in any way. I was just making the point that if a
film is in the "CHILDREN'S" section at the video store, doesn't mean it's
necessarily a children's film.
For example, I think most people would agree that a film where naughty kids
are tortured for things like being greedy or for watching too much television
is not for children. Yet, WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is in the
"CHILDREN'S" section of every video store I've been in.

This was actually the first Bond film I saw in its entirety. I watched this
one again the other day. While it's not Connery's best Bond picture
(GOLDFINGER), it's not his worst either (DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER). It does
contain the most ridiculous moment in all of the "official" Bond films: Bond
gets disguised as a Japanese man. Needless to say, the results are
(unintentionally) hilarious. The score is fantastic as well.
The most notable thing about the film is that it is obviously the primary
inspiration for the Austin Powers films, especially Donald Sutherland's
portrayal of Blofeld.
> Can we plug film reference guides here.
Well, I used to buy two reference guides year after year: Maltin's, as general
guide to quickly look up films; and Ebert's, to read the well-written reviews.
However, I don't buy any film reference books any more. Maltin has been
replaced by the IMDB, and Ebert has a searchable website that contains all of
his reviews since 1985.

I agree with your sister. I think SCHINDLER'S LIST is a great film, but I
have no desire to see it over and over again. Ditto something like BOYS DON'T
CRY. Actually, there's not many films I do enjoying watching multiple times.
I'd rather watch something I haven't seen.
> 1) Ghost in the Darkness
Small correction on the title of the film. It's actually called "The Ghost
AND The Darkness". It seems like a minor quibble, but the title above makes
no sense in the context of the film. I don't really like movies about
hunting, but this one is pretty good. The film was falsely advertised as
"starring" Michael Douglas, when in reality he's only in the film for a few
minutes.

> Top 5, most loathed actors !!
Brendan Frasier is a good actor, but he's been in a lot of stupid movies.
Don't believe me that he's good? Rent GODS AND MONSTERS.
> 6) Braveheart ***
> **** 4.5/5, great one !
The movie's well-made and interesting, but I could never recommend a film as
ridiculously homophobic as this one.
> 8) Armageddon
> Not seen due to awful reviews and comments
Not exactly a masterpiece, but not as bad as people would have you believe.
Especially when compared to DEEP IMPACT, which was pretty lousy. At least
ARMAGEDDON tries to have fun, instead of 2 hours of people weeping: "We're all
gonna die!"
> 10) Willow
> **** Not seen
The film is two hours of bad blue-screen work.
> Will smith is also a repellant although not as bad as Brendan
> Frasier.
Like Frasier, Smith is a good actor who tends to have poor choices in scripts.
For good Smith performances, check out THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE and
(especially) SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION.
> 12) Jurrasic Park ***
> ***** 4/5, welcome - - - to Jurassic park ! Yes, excellent film, good
> story, special effects ...
This was released on DVD recently, and I picked it up. Trivia: I watched the
first T-Rex attack scene to do a sound and picture check on the DVD. Not only
is the scene fantastically staged, but I noticed for the first time that the
entire sequence is done without any music! Even more interesting considering
that the score for this film is probably John Williams' third most
recognizable.
> 23) G.I. Jane ***
> **** 3/5, you liked that, Diane, huh ... A girl kicking butts !!
I liked the film more than I thought I would. I expected the film to be two
hours of "hazing," but there's none of that at all, which was a great choice.
I recently read an interesting argument that this movie is essentially a
remake of TOP GUN, and thinking about it, that was right on the money.
> 44) When Harry Met Sally *** (another big fave)
> **** 2.5/5, never really liked it
The film is pretty much a rip-off of Woody Allen's romantic comedies
(particularly ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN). Not nearly as funny, either.
> 46) Teminator 1 & 2
> **** Terminator : 4/5
> Terminator 2 : 4/5 as well.

Has anybody else seen the TERMINATOR 2: 3D show at Universal? I saw it for
the first time a few weeks ago, and it's amazing! Well worth checking out if
you're in the area.

like this film more than most people probably as I rated it at 3.5/5 and
it's around #6 in my favorite Bond films' list ...

year or the running time especially ... but it's a 1997 edition. No need to
buy a whole lot of those books if you have access to the internet.

Subject: [MV] Straight-to-Video
Well, no new theatrical releases interested me over the weekend, so I decided
to brave a couple of straight-to-video releases. As Kramer says, "My living
room's the premiere!"
PICKING UP THE PIECES -- Woody Allen plays a butcher named Tex who kills his
wife (Sharon Stone) and dismembers the body. Her hand gets lost in the
process, and starts performing miracles in a small New Mexico town. No, I'm
not kidding. Even more bizarre is that the film is directed by Alphonso Arau,
who brought us the wonderful LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE.
I guess the best thing I can say about this film is that it's better than
you'd think. Although the film as a whole doesn't hold together very well,
some of the individual jokes are good. With a little reworking and better
acting, the film actually could have been a clever religious satire. My
biggest problem with the film is that it's essentially a "parade of stars."
Well, more like a parade of television stars and has-beens. Somehow, Arau got
recognizable actors to fill nearly every role in the film. This works against
the film, since instead of getting into the story and characters, every couple
of minutes you are saying "Oh, it's so-and-so!"
Incidentally, although DOGMA got a lot of attention recently this film is far
more irreverent to Catholicism. So, if you even suspect you might be
offended, stay away. The film kept my interest however, and had some
entertainment value. Recommended, but with strong reservations.
FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 3: THE HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER -- I have no idea why I rented
this. FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 2: TEXAS BLOOD MONEY was completely awful.
Luckily, this one's a lot better. It's a prequel to the first film, and
take's place in the early 1900's.
All I really need to say about the plot is that it's essentially the same as
the first FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, just in an earlier time period. The first half
is a western, and the second half is a horror movie. The script isn't all of
that bad, and with a little work and a better director this film could have
been released as a feature. The acting is actually pretty good, notably
veteran character actor Michael Parks (who played a small role in the first
film) as writer Ambrose Bierce. Parks really holds the film together, and
without him I don't think I'd have enjoyed the film nearly as much. I was
also surprised to see Orlando Jones pop up in a small role.
My biggest complaint is that the film was unnecessarily gory. I'm not
squeamish, and none of the gore bothered me. Still, it was unnecessary and
did nothing to further the story. I'm guessing it was put in their to appeal
to the Fangoria crowd, but even they will be disappointed as the splatter
effects are pretty sub-par.
Recommended to fans of the first film. Mildly recommended to anybody who
knows who Ambrose Bierce was (the film could be part of a bizarro
double-feature with OLD GRINGO).
