To me, this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The special effects
were horrible (in one scene it looks like someone is flapping a lion's skin
in the foreground to simulate a real lion), all the choices the characters
make in the film are choices only a person on a daily diet of stupid pills
would actually make (a serious plot-driven, not a character-driven film), the
script telegraphs who's going to be the next victim, Val Kilmer and Michael
Douglas are supposedly out in the jungle for ages and their hair never grows
a centimeter--I could go on and on. Really a stinker.

Not quite straight-to-video. It had a major premiere on one of the movie
networks a couple of months ago--I think it was Showtime. So it's literally a
made-for-TV flick.

Good point...I forgot about that. Actually, I think it was made for
theatrical release (the aspect ration is 1.85:1). I know it sat on the shelf
for quite a while before finally making its way to Showtime and video.

Paul :I must answer yu comment on Braveheart, In the scene when the king
threw his sons lover out the window, This was also an historical insult, If
ythe lover was Piers Gaveston He dies a more horrible death years
later.(check yr encyclopedia)
Now to my MAIN problem with this, Historically The lady Wallace she
marr marries was born in 1294 making her 3 yrs old when she married. &
not the grown up Sophie Marceau. Yeas she did go as an emissary to settle a
dispute but in was many years after aour story.
When ever there is a movie about an historical figure I always research it
before I see it.
Thanks

I know what you mean it has always been a personal favourite of mine as it
really did scare me at the time and still manage to puzzle me. it was
certainly a clever piece of psychological terror for C. Thomas Howell and
I'll never forget the scene where the girl is torn apart.

Subject: [MV] (Slicing-and-dicing) Pups - 1999
Wow, I seem to be the only person who REALLY hated this movie ... I have
read some reviews and they were all positive, praising the film, etc.
I thought it was simply AWFUL, in fact I will NEVER understand how Roger
Ebert could give 3/4 to this one ... my 1.5/5 seems much more appropriate !!
I was actually looking forward to this film knowing Ebert had loved it ...
I can't believe I agree with Richard Roeper who trashed the film on the TV
show !
There are scenes pulled right out of "Dog day afternoon" with Pacino .. only
that other film is like 17 times better !! (4/5 !)
Story is simple, a couple of clueless pre-teens go in a bank to rob it (on
the way to school, as ifffff !) ...
of course everything goes wrong and they are stuck in the bank while coppers
show up outsde ...
What is especially scary is that not only the kids are stoopid in this film
... several stoopid customers and bank employees are there as well ... then
stoopid cops show up (including Burt Reynolds in an embarassing role !)
What is Burt Reynold doing there ?? He's sitting in a damn police 4x4 for
2/3's of the movie ... Plus he is supposed to be the hostage negotiator and
he stinks at it ... keeps antagonizing the lil' bratts inside and making
them even more angry for no good reason, totally unbelievable ... Booze is
even brought inside the bank
at the kids' request, this is highly believable of course (ROLLING MY EYES
BACK !)
Everyone is stoopid in this film, I can't believe it ... The awful Mad city
(1997 ?) with Travolta and Hoffman is actually good compared to this one ...
I suppose the pre-teens are ok for inexperienced actors (The boy is played
by an actor named Daniel Braden .. and he was mighty annoying but I suppose
he was told by the director to act like that ...) The director is "Ash" ..
that's right ... "Ash" ... no last name ! Hehe ! ;-)
Awful and silly dialogues (Bank robbers asking for pizzas, "rubbers",
cheeseburgers and a helicopter to go ! ... etc.), totally incredible story
(I mean a grown man could wrestle the gun away from this lil' 12 year old
bratt in 2.6 seconds basically, but then the movie
would be over after 15 minutes !!) There are 4 grown men in that bank and
they are all MORONS anyway !
I counted at least 10 times when someone could have done that ... tackling
that boy and taking the gun away from him ... and easily too ... the lil'
bugger is a tiny one and would deserve a spanking, not a silly interview on
television ...
MTV shows up at the kid's request and they ask the boy questions like "Is
she your girlfriend ?" "Have you been intimate ?" ... of course the boy
replies with "funny" stuff like "Of course, we do it all the time ... doggie
style ..." ... oh pleeeeeeeeease !! (he also threatens to kill everyone if a
basketball game is not presented on the TV set inside the bank instead of a
special newsprogram about the bank robbery in progress ... geeeeesh ... who
wrote this ??)
1.5/5

I want to like Maltin's book, but the actors' crossreference is woefully
lacking. I really really really hate to say this, but the Blockbuster
Movie Guide seems better. I also hear Videohound (??) is one of the best.

Subject: [MV] The idiots / Dogma film
** Minor spoilers **
Alright, I saw 2 Dogma films the other week ... "Mifune" (1999) and "The
idiots" (1998) ... They were both made under the "Dogma rules" which means,
hand held cameras, no music, no camera tricks, no special effects, no
nothing, just actors, dialogues, story set in "real time" !! and so on and
so on ... Both were in danish with english subtitles.
I wouldn't rave about either one of those two but they are certainly very
watchable and original if you like the Dogma films especially (I liked all
the Dogma films I have seen myself so I was looking forward to those 2
films) "The celebration" made under those "Dogma rules" was one of the best
films of 1998 in my opinion.
"The idiots" is a very special film ... I think if it was presented to an
average audience, in an average city somewhere ... at least 1/3 of the
audience would walk out probably.
It tells the story of a young woman who is in distress (not saying why as it
would be a SPOILER !) ... we see her in a restaurant where she is eating
alone. Suddenly some retarded people are creating trouble, they were
sitting at other tables quietly, but then they get up, they are walking
around, bothering other diners with their antics, stealing bread from
people's plates ... etc. etc.
Then, after a couple of minutes, disrupting the peace, they simply walk out
and the waiters don't even notice they haven't paid for their meals, they
are just happy to see them go away finally and leave the other customers
alone ...
Strangely when they get in the parking lot they "act normal" suddenly ... at
least some of them ... This is perplexing until you understand they were
just FAKING IT ... See, this is only a game, they pretend to be retarded
and they love to fool people, this way they can discover their "inner idiot"
as they say and do whatever pleases them ... I like this idea actually, and
it is well made as we get to meet each of the people in the group ...
The young woman in distress joins them as they get along and they all live
together in a house that is for sale (one of the "pretend-idiots" is related
to the owner) but of course whenever someone wants to buy it, they act like
"idiots" and the buyers run away like mice thinking there is no way they
will buy a house like that especially when they learn those people will be
hanging out nearby (One asks the "permission" to go in the garden behind the
house whenever they feel like it as they are "used" to doing that ...)
We get to follow them in all sorts of daily activities ... going grocery
shopping, going to the pool, going door-to-door in the neighborhood to bug
people selling them crappy candles they made, just hanging out and talking
... sometimes they act like retarded people, other times like normal people
... not always the same characters either ... quite intriguing actually ...
Plenty of nudity as well ... I mean ... WOW ! ... It was a shame really
that censors forced Lars Von Trier, the director, to block some parts of the
screens with "black squares", hiding the genitals of the actors ...
especially the male ones ...
I mean .. what's this ?? There are numerous shots of females walking around
naked, and even more (!) ... but forget about seeing males naked ... kind of
a double standard !!
Apparently censors feel ok about seeing a woman naked but no man can be seen
naked or else they go crazy ... Bizarre !! I would have preferred a
completely uncensored version of course, it's not a movie for young people
anyway, even in the version with the "Black squares" ...
In a completely wild scene ... a few of the "retarded" people are having a
Birthday party in the house and then one aks the Birthday boy ... what
should we do now ??
Of course he is aroused as he sees this gorgeous woman standing nearby in a
lil' T-shirt (Wow, the women in this film were lovely as well, quite
distracting, especially since they were naked so often !!) so he says (in
this idiotic voice of course as he is "in character") "Gang bang ..." and
then he repeats it several times ...
They all laugh and act silly, undressing, chasing each others in the garden
half naked, screaming endlessly, tackling each other, this was hilarious !!
...
(The black squares were numerous let me tell you !)
As you can see this film is not for everyone ... but I did like it myself
... 3/5 ... I was close to 3.5/5 in part too ... The film kind of starts off
a bit slowly but then it gets better and better as you understand those
people more ... and the ending is amazing I must say ...
I like those films that end with a "BANG" (gang bang ??) ! Might be better
on a 2nd viewing actually ... probably would go up to a 3.5/5 considering it
is quite NASTY and original.
Here's a link ! The reviewer didn't even like the film (2/5) but it's not a
big surprise as this is certainly a controversial film ... at least you get
to see a lil' picture on the site ... (Yep, naked people running around, no
worries, it's not offensive unless you're
a PRUDE !!)

Alright, I saw this film tonight ... T'was pretty bad !
I mean some parts are embarassing for the actors ! (I was thinking Jackson
should have left the set actually ... but then would he have been sued ??)
So-so story, Samuel L. Jackson accused of having killed 83 innocent
protestors in front of the US embassy in Yemen ... I liked the first 20-25
minutes and then it was on a downhill all the way to the terrible ending ...
Good battle scenes, a hail of bullets ... also the parts in Vietnam to open
the film ... Oh and they could have eased up on the patriotism too !
(coughing sounds !!)
Silly dialogues and situations sometimes, good acting by the leads but many
times I was rolling my eyes back ... Good work by Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L.
Jackson and Guy Pearce at least ... without them I would go down to 1.5/5
probably, 2/5 seems appropriate for now.
Example of silly dialogues ... Samuel L. Jackson on top of the Us Embassy in
Yemen ... seconds after the battle fight has ended after he ordered his men
to shoot at the crowd below, talking to the men in his platoon who are all
laying around, ducking behind walls ...
"STAY DOWN ... STAY DOWN ... THERE STILL MIGHT BE SOME SNIPERS !!" ...
I mean this is ridiculous ... he is shouting that as he is standing upright
himself, in plain sight ... I was laughing and this was supposed to be a
tense moment ...
Same thing when we see a tiny girl shooting a machine gun near the end, like
it would make a difference, justifying the massacre, oh yeah !!
Awful ending too ... I didn't even care anymore is Jackson would be declared
guilty or not ... Plenty of plot holes, things that don't make sense. It
looks like there are some scenes missing, especially near the end ...
2/5

Subject: [MV] An affair of love - 1999
*** <<<< Off list message from Scott >>>>
*** Hi Scott ! I just rented this movie and I thought it was very good
although I would't say it's incredibly good either ... my rating is 3.5/5
(7/10) ... Thanks for the recommendation ! I shall add comments inside
your review with stars in front ... ******* Marc ;-)
> AN AFFAIR OF LOVE (UNE LIAISON PORNOGRAPHIQUE)is available in french
with english subtitles.
> In the early scenes of AN AFFAIR OF LOVE, two characters appear in
> documentary-style interview vignettes. In separate one-on-one
interviews,
***** Yes, I liked this format, interviews and flashbacks, well made ...
> an off-camera voice prods an unnamed woman (Nathalie Baye) and man
(Sergi
> Lopez) for information about a relationship that is now clearly some
time
> in the past. As the interviews are cross-cut with scenes from their
actual
> meetings, the two voices turn into something akin to a spoken-word
version
> of "I Remember It Well." They met on-line, she says; they met through a
> personals ad in a magazine, he says.
**** Yep, loved it how they had different memories of what actually happened
.. like once she says the affair lasted 4 months and he says 6 months ...
;-)
They exchanged photos, he says; not
> so, says she. Their first sexual encounter was satisfying, she claims
with
> a smile; a bit disappointing, he recalls. Ah, yes they remember it
well.
***** Yeah, I thought they were pushing it a bit though, I mean can you have
such totally different opinions on so many subjects ??
>
> The hazy recollections and unreliable perceptions could have been
> played as little more than an amusing conceit, but in AN AFFAIR OF LOVE,
> they form the backbone for one of the most stunningly rendered
> sort-of-love stories in recent years. A few things do become
more-or-less
> clear as the story unfolds, despite the differing retrospective
accounts.
***** I wouldn't say it was so special ... I mean there were a few
repetitious scenes, "time-filler" .. going in that hotel, going out, etc.
> The man and woman initially come together to fulfill a mutual, somewhat
> unusual sexual fantasy, one that is never explicitly defined.
***** I think that was for the woman actually ... she tells him when they
first meet that she has already reserved a hotel room ... he seem quite
surprise, but tries not to show it, playing it "cool" ... good acting there
by both !
Though the
> encounter is initially meant to be a one-time, purely physical event,
they
> agree to meet again, and again, until they contemplate a more "normal"
> sexual encounter.
***** Mmmmmm ... I just saw it and it seems clear to me this was going to be
a "more-than-once" affair ... unless the man was completely inadequate in
bed (or out of bed !) that is !
The woman was clearly in control.
Eventually, each begins to feel that the relationship
> has more potential, even though they do not know each other's name, or
> occupation, or anything that, as the woman describes, makes up "what we
> normally call our lives."
***** I found that hard to believe myself ... I mean they go out for months
and they don't even know each other's FIRST name ... nothing ?? Seemed
unlikely ! I didn't believe this could happen, that you would meet a woman
once or twice per week for 4-5-6 months and not even know her first name at
least ...
>
> It doesn't take a Francophone to recognize that the French title
UNE
> LIAISON PORNOGRAPHIQUE doesn't exactly translate to AN AFFAIR OF LOVE.
***** Yeah, I speak french, I saw the french version ... it wasn't
pornographic although there were some naughty parts ... like that scene in
the bath, it was sexy even if nothing was seen on screen, just by the way
they were talking, describing what they were doing ... it should have been
NASTIER in fact as when they are making love for example you don't really
feel ... mmmmm ... well ... it's like the actors are aware there is a camera
right **there** ... I had this impression ... The woman was making sure she
was well COVERED by the sheets ... it was apparent.
> Indeed, Fine Line Films' American title proves not only to be an obvious
> bow to marketing concerns, but a patently absurd take on the development
> of the relationship. What begins as a pornographic liaison does mutate,
> but it does not mutate into a love affair.
**** Yes .. I am agreeing .. and grinning !! They can't possibly love each
other in the normal way ...
AN AFFAIR OF LOVE is a
> meditation on what happens to people when they find themselves in a
> relationship where they feel no pressure to do what they think they
should
> do, because the rules have been discarded from the outset. The man and
> woman's growing affection builds to a climax that has been telegraphed
by
> the framing structure -- we know they don't end up together -- yet packs
a
> wallop because it's not about whether they will end up together.
***** Yep, even if we know the outcome it is still satisfying to see how
they got there ...
In fact,
> the scene is brilliant because it works on two levels: as a tragedy of a
> relationship that didn't have to end, and as evidence that neither one
> knew the other in any substantial way.
**** Liked the ending, they think they know what the other one is thinking
but they are mistaken ... this ruins the whole relationship.
>
> By all rights, AN AFFAIR OF LOVE should never have worked as
anything
> more than an intellectual exercise, with a little sex thrown in for
spice.
> The characters are defined exclusively within the context of their
> arm's-length relationship, leaving huge chunks of their lives
unexplored.
> Yet they still emerge as fascinating and complex people,
**** Yes, they were complicated alright ... especially Nathalie Baye !!
thanks to a
> subtle script by Philippe Blasband and two remarkable performances. Baye
> and Lopez play off each other masterfully -- hinting at emotions beneath
> the surface, capturing awkward moments with a sensitivity that almost
> forces you to look away.
**** Yes, even though not a whole lot happens, really, you find yourself
fascinated because the acting and dialogues are so good ...
Fonteyne pulls it all together with an unfailing
> visual sense, and a rhythm that pulls this 77-minute film together
without
> an ounce of flab.
***** I still think there was some flab, even at 77 minutes ! A bit on the
slow side in part ...
>
> The only time AN AFFAIR OF LOVE feels remotely strained in its
> presentation involves an episode where the lovers have an encounter with
> an estranged elderly couple. It's an unnecessarily obvious counterpoint
to
> the fantasy world in which they live, one that spells out what any
viewer
> should understand: that the relationship being explored has nothing to
do
> with the reality of a life together.
**** Oh, that didn't bother me so much, thought it was ok ... making them
think about what they were doing ! That old man was certainly caught with
his pants down too ...
Fonteyne says more when he's saying
> less, as he does when he leaves his camera at a distance outside the
hotel
> room door when the lovers are engaged in their mysterious fantasy
> activity.
**** I liked how the "secret" was not revealed ... good idea, making you
wonder what the hell they were doing that was so special and/or shocking !
It is the one moment where the two characters come together in
> their story; they both respect the privacy and intimacy of the reason
they
> came together in the first place. The irony of Fine Line's title is that
> it plays to the distorted memories of the characters who, over time,
have
> turned their pornographic affair into an affair of love. Ah, yes they
> remember it well.
***** Good review, Scott ! I agree it was very good but your 9/10 seems
a tad high ... still a fine film that is worth watching but it is certainly
not for everybody ... art-house people are more likely to be interested in
such a mature drama !
Marc ;-)

Hi !
Here are some of my favorite websites ... what about yours ?? I'll list all
the addresses below.
I like a few movie critics but my #1 choice would be James Berardinelli
(From the Reel Views movie site) ...
Good reviews plus I can trust his judgment most of the times !
Roger Ebert is also a good source although he is sometimes perplexing ...
Examples : 3/4 for "Pups" and
2/4 only for "Gladiator" ?? 3.5/4 for "The perfect storm" also appears to
be high ! Gimme a break, Roger !
Then there is The flipside movie emporium where a few good people are
working together to create a very good and interesting movie site, plus it
has "visuals" that I like. Pictures from the movie are displayed while you
read the critic. Neat !
The ROTTENTOMATOES site is also great to check out the opinions of several
critics at once ... just like the Check-the-grid site that is a good source
of information.
Among the search engines I like The internet movie database (of course !)
and the Movie Review Query Engine (Good place to find multiple reviews with
direct links !)

Hi List!
I'm not sure if this thread is about review-sites only, but I think you
missed at least two of the top movie sites worldwide:
www.darkhorizons.com
Dedicated to the fantastic, weird and darkthis site is the very best
resource for news, reviews, interviews and, above all, rumours!
www.aint-it-cool-news.com
If a movie hits the theatres, it's of no interest anymore for
aint-it-cool-news.com. But before that, you get informations about films
that aren't even ready yet. Rumours that someone picked up somewhere,
reviews from test screenings and previews, that kind of stuff. Has an
extensive database, as well!

Subject: [MV] Facts about American beauty
<<< SPOILERS >>>
Thanks K. It was intriguing to read this ! Especially since I loved
American beauty ! I indeed thought it was a bit strange that Lester would
back out, I mean his gola in life was to have sex with that lil' cheerleader
and once she agrees he backs out ?? Seemed a bit strange although NOT
impossible of course ...
Marc ;o)
<<< Off list, intriguing facts about American beauty ! >>>
What hasn't been broadcast in every media report is that first-time director
Sam Mendes cut the original opening sequence, which featured the ghost of
Lester Burnham returning to his old neighborhood - fluttering down from
heaven in his bathrobe, in fact - to give us a tour.
As scripted, the story starts with Lester dead. No different from the film,
right? The change from script to screen is that Ricky is shown in jail,
dramatically singing "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads. Meanwhile, the TV
tabloids have picked up the videotape of Jane appearing to hire Ricky to off
her sorry excuse for a dad. And Ricky's father, the colonel, is seen raving
about how the prosecution leaked the tape to make his son appear guilty. At
the script's end, Ricky is convicted and it's revealed that his dad actually
leaked the tape to seal the deal. Jane, too, is sent up for the crime.
Angela becomes a starlet on a popular TV show that resembles Melrose Place,
and Carolyn joins Buddy's business. Yes, they're the "King and Queen of Real
Estate." Of course, all that remains of all this is the scene from the tape
at the beginning; all of the extended context and consequence was cut by
director Sam Mendes, who felt that putting Ricky and Jane in the hot seat
was "too cynical." Writer Alan Ball says he was eventually convinced the
cuts were the right choice.
While director Sam Mendes was pretty faithful to the original script, two
sex scenes were cut prior to production. The first was a flashback scene of
Colonel Fitts having an affair with another soldier in Vietnam. The soldier
is killed, which provides cause and effect for Fitts' conflicted homosexual
yearnings; the subtext is that he feels punished for his sins. Writer Alan
Ball admits he often writes backstory scenes that aren't necessary because
they help him create characters that are flesh and blood, not cardboard. The
scene was among the first cut for two reasons: because it gave away too much
about Fitts too early, and because no other character in the film had any
flashbacks - so it threw too much emphasis on Fitts. The other sex scene cut
was between Lester and Angela. That's right, in the script the 42-year-old
father has sex with the 16-year-old virgin. Ball explains that in his angry
state writing the script, he didn't really think about the consequences for
his star character. A DreamWorks executive pitched the change, suggesting
Lester doesn't need to follow through on his desire because Angela is really
the catalyst for change, not the end goal. Plus, Lester comes off as a dirty
old man if he sleeps with her. To replace it, Ball added the scene with
Lester and Angela talking in the kitchen, which puts Lester back on the path
to being a strong father. Right before he dies
The original scripted opening had Lester flying above his neighborhood.
Mendes shot Kevin Spacey in front of a blue screen and created the flying
shot, but when he watched it he said it felt like it belonged in a different
film, perhaps a Coen Brothers picture, so he scrapped the flying and kept
the background plate shots. Incidentally, the movie's tagline "Look closer"
was also a happy accident: Set decorator Jan K. Bergstrom placed a cutout
with the words on Lester's cubicle wall at work. Dreamworks' marketing
department picked up on the metaphor and built an advertising campaign
around it.
K.
