Hello !
Now this film was trashed by many critics but I thought it was a fairly
interesting tale ... It is worth a look especially if you like "supernatural
thrillers" and
don't take it too seriously.
It was an intriguing film and it challenged the very foundations that the
church has stood on for 2000 years.
It asks many questions and it doesn't stop or
appologize for doing so, certainly has more credibility than a film like
"End of days" for example that I consider to be a comedy myself since it is
so over-the-top I was laughing often !
I think that if you watch this film with an open mind you may actually enjoy
it and learn something in the process. If you are a deeply religious person
though you may be offended by some of the ideas developed in the film,
portraying the Catholic Church in a way that might not be too flattering.
Many people will probably tell you what this movie is about in great lengths
so I won't describe the narrative part concerning the plot in elaborate
details. You all know that it is about a woman (Patricia Arquette) that
seems to be getting the same wounds that Jesus Christ did
while he was being crucified.
It is up to Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) to determine if her wounds
are real or not and why this sinful young woman is getting them suddenly.
It is an interesting story and it is well made technically too although the
film is often very loud ... (Was all that Hard rock music necessary ?)
The strength of this film is first of all the actors, but what has to be
mentioned first and foremost is the
director and the editors.
Robert Wainright is a relative newcomer to the business but he paces the
film to perfection. He keeps you guessing as to when the next sign of the
Stigmata is going to strike and when he wants you to be afraid, he
manipulates you with gripping authority making you uncomfortable.
The editting is what really makes this movie as good and as tense as it is.
Michael Millar and Michael Duthie are both veterans of the business and here
they do a very good job, especially when Frankie (Arquette) is receiving her
Stigmata wounds. When you see the disturbing images of nails and whips and
crowns of thorns, you actually cringe and slump in your chair, certainly
making you
feel uneasy in part.
Billions and billions of people swear by all sorts of religions. Whether it
is Jesus Christ, Allah, Buddha, Santa, people want and need to believe in a
higher power ... Religions are all based on faith and Stigmata dares to ask
questions that many don't ask. But if you see this film, take the time to
talk and think about it later.
It raises some valid points about the Church, the Vatican
and organized religions in general, and that is not me being anti-religious,
that is just the truth.
Not only is Stigmata well made but it is scary, and perhaps that is all that
some people want when they watch a "thriller". There are indeed some scary
moments and there is a great deal of atmosphere in here but it also goes
"deeper" than that and this makes it a good film to rent on a rainy Sunday
night.

Easily the worst movie of the year, even worse than The Cell, and that's
saying something. The Budweiser gag would have given it one star, but
all the other "jokes" ah-hem, stripped it of any kind of merit it may
have garnered. Absolutely unfunny, it ranks with Wild Wild West as one
of the worst wastes of 2 hours of my life, EVER.

I have a copy, but have not yet read it. The original novel, by Richard
Matheson, is a classic and "Omega Man" was a near-great movie (despite being
quite different from the book). What's the problem with the new version?
(I suppose I should just read it!)

Subject: [MV] Practical Magic, was it good or BAD ...
*** Adding comments to yours, Ms. Gemini ! *** Stars in front as ususal !
For a change of pace, and at my request, we rented Practical Magic, starring
Sandra Bullock, Nichole Kidnam, a delightful Stockard Channing and an
equally
delightful Dianne Wiest (The Birdcage, Edward Scissorhands) as the
delightfully magickal aunts,
***** I agree about the aunts stealing the show here, I would have wanted
more of them in fact ! Kidman and Bullock were only average though ...
in addition to Aiden Quinn and that hunky fella
from ER that took George Clooney's place...
***** Aidan Quinn seemed a bit bored in that film if I recall (wondering
what he was doing in this movie perhaps, that oh-so predictable "romance"
with Bullock). I don't know that other fellow you talk about, never watched
an episode of ER myself.
I don't remember his name, what
what a fun surprise to see him...and in such a *different* role! I really
loved this movie. OH yeah, it's a chick flick...for those guys who
don't like looking at beautiful women exploring their own power, and that's
okay.
***** I have to disagree as I think this movie is pretty bad actually ..
1.5/5 is my score, but I am not a "chick" so maybe this influences me ! The
story was silly in part, corps raising out of the ground issue, etc. etc.
(also a Bizarre "exorcist-like" ceremony near the end involving Kidman ??)
and rather predictable too ... I was rolling my eyes back often and thinking
how many much better small budget films they could have made with the same
amount of money ... 5 ?? 10 ??
The music was splendiforous and fun, and there was plenty of drama,
excitment and suspense to keep you hanging in there while admiring the
beauty and pageantry of the scenery.
***** Yes, I remember the good music even if I have only seen the film once
like 2 years ago at least ... it sure looked good on screen and not only due
to Nicole Kidman's lovely presence ... I obviously disagree on the drama,
excitement and suspense comments you made though, Gemini.
Ms. Bullock is really in a tailspin ... nothing but bad films ... Speed 2,
Hope Floats, Practical magic, 28 days ... etc.
The possibly existed that this would
be a poorly constructed flash in the pan cult film that could not hold its
own
weight, but I was pleasantly surprised.
***** I doubt this could be considered a cult-film but that's me ...
"flash-in-the-pan" sounds like a more appropriate term. As for myself I was
surprised it was so bad actually ... 1.5/5 ... with the stars, the budget
... I would have expected a good film ... but apparently they thought
telling a good story was optional here.
If you've liked anything else I've
liked, you just might like this one too. I'm considering purchasing it to
add to
my library.
...geminiwalker
****** Not a big surprise that we disagree, is it ?? We should do a TV show
together ... there would be "sparks" often ... hehe ! Have a fine day !
Marc ;o)

I actually thought Scary Movie was damn funny. I expected it to be
God awful, but was surprised throughout. If you looked at it as
merely a spoof, not a story, and have seen all the movies it took
liberties with, you could do far worse. In fact, I think all year
I've only laughed harder during Mission Impossible II.

That may be so, but seeing as I live in the U.K. "Whipped" and "Bless
this child" haven't opened here yet - so I can't comment. For my money,
Scary Movie was dire. I went in expecting to chuckle, as generally I
like spoof films (eg. Airplane, Naked Gun) but I really foud all of this
very unfunny, and the nods to other movies were forced and badly
written.

I agree, the Charlton Heston version was quite good, and certainly a
staple for me when it was on T.V. when I was growing up. The script for
I Am Legend however, disappoints in being weak, not a great plot, and
even the "action" scenes don't seem that "action" - I can't sum up
exactly what I didn't like about it, but I just didn't really like it.
Maybe it's because it's written by Mark Protosevich - this guy has got
to go a long way to make up for "The Cell"

Subject: [MV] THE EXORCIST - a comedy?
**** Adding lil' comments ! With stars in front ! **** Marc ;o)
Funny, though, because half the audience seemed to think "The Exorcist" was
a
comedy.
***** Hey, great post Mike ! It was intriguing ... and SURPRISING !! I am
surprised because you are saying many people were actually laughing while
watching this film ?? This is strange because I think this film is one of
the scariest of all times ... probably in my top 3 "Most scary films I have
ever seen" list !
This was one rowdy audience we saw the film with. It's a bad sign
when you walk into a fully packed theater and a fight breaks out near the
top
of the stadium seating. Yes, a fight. And there would be another one
before
the movie was over.
**** Hehe !! Rowdy audience indeed !! Were they fighting EVIL though ??
THAT is the question !!
Never witnessed a fight in a move house myself,
guess Canadian audiences are more MEEK and MILD !
;o)
Anyway, half the audience was laughing their asses off at the film. I guess
it's funny to them to see a little girl saying things like, "Fuck me" and
"Your mother sucks cocks in hell" in a strange voice.
***** I can't believe people were laughing !! This would have annoyed me
big time in fact ...
I can see a bit of
humor in that, but it's not laugh-out-loud hilarious, is it? And what about
one of the scenes where Linda Blair is being inspected at the hospital, when
they stick that thing in her and blood starts spurting through it? Funny?
This little girl's in pain! I've come to the conclusion that people are
just
sick.
***** Yes, I agree .. not once while watching this movie did I think it was
amusing in any way ... it was DISTURBING on the contrary ! I have seen the
film
3-4 times at least and I own it in fact.
Of course, the other half of the audience seemed to be terrified. There
were
people gasping in fear -- I think the new "crab walk" scene garnered the
most
frightened reaction.
***** Yes, I haven't seen the new version of The exorcist, not sure if it's
even out in theaters here yet ... but I have seen a TV show about it a year
ago I think where they were discussing the new release and showing some of
the scenes added ... that "crab walk" freaked me out !! It was quite scary
!!
Some people left early, especially those with crying
children and babies. Just a hint: DO NOT BRING KIDS UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE
TO
SEE "THE EXORCIST." There was a lot of crying children in the audience I
saw
the movie with.
****** Again I am surprised that anyone would bring children and babies to
see this film ... what were they thinking ?? This is ADULT material ... or
at least material for teens who are mature enough to "take it" ...
Even with all of the distractions (ringing cellphones, people screaming
obscenities at the characters on screen, etc.), I was completely mesmerized
by
watching "The Exorcist" on the big screen.
****** Hard to enjoy a movie in such difficult conditions .. even if it's an
excellent one like The exorcist ... all those distractions keeping you from
getting the "full effect" of the movie ... damn it ! (No pun intended !)
One word: Wow. "The Exorcist" is
not a movie, it's an experience. Next to Kubrick's "The Shining," it would
have to be the second scariest film I have ever seen. They really don't
make
'em like they used to. Mike S.
****** I agree with you about The shining ... magnificent horror film ...
5/5 ... I give 4/5 to The exorcist ... both are very scary and so much
better that the horror films produced today indeed !

I agree. When I saw it years ago I thought it was very funny also. Could
not believe that anybody found it scary much less believed it. When her

Most "scary" movies do not age well. When I was a kid, I thought the
original KING KONG was hilarious, with its obviously fake giant ape. But
I'm sure it scared people when it first came out. (A movie that scared ME as
a kid was "Night of the Hunter." I dunno if it would scare kids today.)

Scary movies based on effects don't age well. But I find the exorcist to be
genuinely spooky, even when I had a chance to watch a re-run on TV. Why? I
attribute it to the fact that I was raised a Catholic and was exposed to all
sorts of superstititions associated with Catholicism. Much of the protestant
denomination in North America and elsewhere don't have these rituals nor do they
have as intricate belief system as Catholics do.
The exorcist of course deals specifically with a special act performed within
the catholic establishment, the exorcism. Others may find it a little bit weird
since its not part of their religion or upbringing.

Subject: [MV] Never Cry Wolf, Walking with Dinosaurs
It was a PG weekend. I recommend Never Cry Wolf.
A government scientist travels to the arctic to study whether wolves are
killing caribou. He sets up camp alongside a family of wolves and observes,
studying especially their eating habits. It's predictable that he will form
a bond with those wolves but as expected not everyone he encounters has the
same feeling. There's some good acting by some Inuit types and they
thankfully don't use the same actors as Dances with Wolves !! Brian Dennehey
does a great job as a bush pilot. The opening scenes when he flies the guy
up to the wilderness are fantastic. It's NOT a Dances with Wolves and quite
a bit shorter. Also worth mentioning is the music, how it bulilds up during
the movie.
Also worth mentioning is the series Walking with Dinosaurs. It was
originally a series on Discovery but the second part is the making of. Worth
every minute of the 3+ hours.

I'm not ignorant to Catholicism and I thought it was unrealistic and funny.

This same argument invariably pops up whenever Citizen Kane is
called the greatest flick of all time. Looking at it now, it's just
not. But at the time it came out it contained so many things that
hadn't been seen before, so many innovations, such an original tack,
that even though it got beat by the pedestrian "Marty" for the Best
Film Oscar of that year and made a fairly unspectacular box office
run, it's still looked back on in hindsight as something special.
Ditto 2001: A Space Oddysey, which was panned by the critics upon
release, but years later those same critics will point to that film
as an innovator of it's time.
The Exorcist doesn't have the legs to make people vomit in the
aisles now like it did on it's original release, because we're a
tougher audience. You have to remember that when The Exorcist came
out, it was up against Doris Day movies, perhaps the occasional
Hitchcock thriller, and so compared to those it was some scary ass
stuff.
I like the fact that it's been re-released, even though I probably
won't go see it. I suggested to a distributor a long time ago that
they should re-release one classic film every month so that
audiences that missed out the first time can get another chance.
Imagine Fast Times At Ridgemont High getting a big screen
re-release? Animal House! Jaws! Taxi Driver! Raging Bull! Easy
Rider! Dirty Harry! Blade Runner! say Anything! Surely at a time
when the only other option is Urbane Legends 2, being able to go
back in time is a good thing, and even if audiences don't get the
same big budget thrills and spills that they might be used to
getting on most weekends of the year, at least they get a little
cinema education, perhaps a few memories jogged.

A small correction: CITIZEN KANE was released in 1941, and MARTY was released
in 1955. HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY was the Best Picture of 1941.
As for THE EXORCIST I think today's audiences have become jaded by the trend
in the last five years to infuse horror and comedy. You don't see very many
straight horror films doing well at the box office. It's very hard for
audiences (especially young people who weren't even alive when the film was
initially released) to put a film in the context of the time it was made. The
result is that they see the film with same expectations they would have for a
modern feature. Since most of these teens have only seen contemporary horror
films that mix in a heavy dose of comedy, they expect it out of THE EXORCIST.
Of course, they also think themselves somehow "superior" to those quaint
people of the 1970's, and have a good laugh at things like hairstyles and
fashions.
If SCREAM is re-released in 2020, the teens today (the same ones mocking THE
EXORCIST) will be upset when their kids are mocking what they consider a
"classic." And the teens of 2020 will be complaining on the internet that
"SCREM sux, d00d. thers no hologrphic 3d effex lik in da horror movees i
lik." What goes around, comes around.
