The sentiment may well be there, but the typography will probably be better,

also a favourite movie from my childhood but let's not forget the original
version with vincent price which was a better film for it's time than omega
man. the only problem now is I can't remember what it was called, I had long
thought it called "the last man on earth" but my copy of Halliwells doesn't
list it, nor was it called "I am legend".
I'm pretty sure that it was based on that novel though. Price played the
role of a doctor in the midst of an horrific pandemic plague and eventually
he is the last man left until these creatures start to attack him. I can't
even remember how it ended.

Yes, it was called "The Last Man on Earth" and it's available from Amazon on
VHS... but it's not worth watching, IMHO. (And BTW: "Omega Man" will be out
on DVD in January, 2001.)

Subject: [MV] Diamonds are NOT forever - 1971
** Minor spoilers **
Alright ... The other day I watched "Diamonds are forever", I was supposed
to see "In her Majesty's secret service" before this one but it turned out
differently
so I'll see that one later ...
"Diamonds" was so bad I have to place it in my "Top 3 least favorite James
Bond films" actually ... 1.5/5 is my score, mostly because when it wasn't
BORING, it was SILLY and when it wasn't SILLY, it was BORING ... well,
except for the first 20-25 minutes that were OK but then the movie
degenerates into a complete mess.
In fact I just read a few reviews and most people were saying how it was
such a disappointment.
James Berardinelli says "... after a promising start, the story devolves
into idiocy ..." and he goes on and on and on about everything that is WRONG
with this film and **still** gives the movie a 2.5/4 ... The way he was
talking about the film I would have imagined a 1 or 1.5 out of 4 would have
been his score ... but NO !
Now if **that** is not being "forgiving" with a film, I don't know what is !
80% of his review is negative, why not give what the film really deserves
then ?? Bizarre ! gimme a break, James ! (Maybe he was named after Mr. Bond
himself !)
The story is mostly uninteresting and even absurd in part as we follow
Bond's quest to try and find out who has been stealing Diamonds and why ...
this leads him to Las Vegas where a good part of the movie takes place ..
Bond is dealing with a millionaire who owns a company that is involved in
space exploration and building a laser that can be used from outer space (or
something !) Jimmy Dean plays "Whillard Whyte" as a complete
buffoon ...
"Ernst Blofeld" from previous Bond films is the villain here. He is holding
the world hostage as he threatens to use the deadly "space laser" to destroy
large cities if he is not given a huge amount of money (The usual !)
He is played in a boring way by Charles Gray ... many actors have played
Blofeld before as he is the leader of SPECTRE, this evil organization that
is often mixed up
in Bond stories but he has to be the least interesting one for sure ...
A couple of thugs who are out to kill basically anyone in contact with the
diamonds are also quite uninteresting and annoying in fact ... they are sort
of a "Penn & Teller" duo but a lot less funny than the real ones ! They are
good when it comes to killing lil' old ladies but can't even manage to get
rid of Bond even when he is unconscious ... awful !
This movie also has two of the worst Bond girls ever ... first Ms. "Plenty
O'toole" makes a brief appearance in Las Legas (I was almost glad when she
gets thrown out the window of that hotel and lands in the pool way below !)
Lana Wood who plays this character was simply horrible and her only
qualities were her ample breasts actually ... (Geesh, I'm harsh today ...
but it's true !)
As if that was not enough, Jill St-John as "Tiffany Case" was just as bad
... the problem with her is that we see her all the time in this film
contrarely to Ms. O'Toole that makes a rather quick exit ... we indeed have
to be annoyed watching Ms. Case's SILLY behavior for half the movie ...
Worst moment is when she falls off a platform after shooting a machine gun
... I was rolling my eyes back so fast I almost tipped over ... getting
dizzy !
The problem with this film is that only Connery is good ... everything else
is bad .. the story (switching the tape in Blofeld's control room right in
front of him, oh pleaaaase ! I'm surprised they even **attempted** to do it
like that ... ludicrous !) , the acting by the supporting characters ...
etc. etc. So it is overall
a big disappointment.
Only a couple of action scenes that are rather interesting. One long car
chase in Las Vegas as Bond
is being pursued by coppers and later on helicopters attack Blofeld's
installations but it was too little too late by that time ...
I couldn't wait for the movie to end actually ... even if I knew I would
have to hear the so-so title song once again ... ;o)
Someone was just telling me this was one of his favorite Bond films because
he had good memories of seeing it when he was 8 years old just as it was
being released in movie theaters ... and I have to agree, if I had been 8 in
1971 watching this film I probably would have found it amusing ... but not
NOW for sure, guess I'm too old and cynical now !
1.5/5
Marc ;o)

Bloody hell. I got one wrong. Badly wrong. Marty cleaned up in 1956,
the year Rebel Without A Cause got nominated for everything except
Best Picture and Best Actor, the two awards the film actually
deserved, just as Kane got snubbed fifteen years earlier.

I read this script last night, it is so godawful - absolutely
dire. You can tell that the guy who wrote it is such a Rock-Music fan
with heavy handed "tributes" - his main Characters are called "Rezonor"
as in Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and "Cabain" as in Kurt Cobain.
There's loads of other ham fisted references as well, one especially is
a group of black-magic worshippers chating "rotaderp susrev nayla" which
backwards reads - in bad grammar "Alien Versus Predator" which must be
another script that this guy wrote.
TERRIBLE

I watched every James Bond movie and "Diamonds Are Forever" is my favorite of
all of them. I was a lot older than 8 years old when I saw it and I find this
film is still well worth watching. The reviewer did not like the "Diamonds
Are Forever" theme song but I like that song a lot. Sean Connery turned in
another great performance as James Bond. The reviewer did not like the two
villians in the opening scene, but I enjoyed their witty remarks. The
reviewer did not even mention two of the best Bond women ever, the characters
named Bambi and Thumper. Their GirlFight with James Bond is a classic. I also
liked Jimmy Dean's acting a lot better than the reviewer. As "Ebert & Roeper
At The Movies" continues to prove, different people can easily have very
different reactions to the same film.

Hi !
Here are the Gary Sinise films I have seen ... I think he is pretty good
overall yet not everybody knows his name for some reason ! The last film I
saw him in was rather awful though, "It's the rage" ... 1.5/5 ... Not his
fault as an actor of course !
By order of preference (Sometimes as in Being John Malkovich he only has a
small part though).
- ----------------------------------------------------
1- Apollo 13 - 1995 - 4.5/5
2- Being John Malkovich - 1999 - 4.5/5
3- Ransom - 1996 - 4.5/5 (Lots of people are surprised by this high rating
but I thought it was a great thriller, I have issues with the ending though,
last 10-15 minutes of the film that SHOULD NOT have been so "Hollywood", a
"nasty" ending would have been more appropriate in my opinion.)
4- Forrest Gump - 1994 - 4/5
5- The quick and the dead - 1995 - 4/5 ... (Another one that I like a lot
more than most people, but again the ending is lacking !)
6- A midnight clear - 1991 - 3.5/5
7- The green mile - 1999 - 3.5/5
8- George Wallace - 1997 - 2.5/5
9- The Stand - 1994 - 2.5/5
10- Albino alligator - 1996 - 2.5/5
11- Snake eyes - 1998 - 2.5/5
12- All the rage - 1999 - 1.5/5
- ----------------------------------------------
Not sure if two of his last films are even worth seeing though ... awful
reviews and comments about :
- - Reindeer games - 2000 and
- - Mission to Mars - 2000
What do you think ??

Run, don't walk, away from REINDEER GAMES. It's just plain awful. I didn't
even bother with MISSION TO MARS after seeing the trailer ("That looks like

Subject: [MV] High fidelity - 2000
** Minor spoilers **
This was a good comedy/drama but I think it goes on for too long so I have
mixed feelings about it ... still good for a 3/5 (I was thinking 3.5/5 for a
good portion of the film but then it was dragging quite a bit in the last
third so I have to penalize it slightly ...)
We all know someone who is obsessesd with either the world of music or film.
I mean the kind of boy (or girl !) who can tell you not only the name of a
song recorded in 1976 but what the flip side of that single was? Or a guy
that can list his record collection in chronological order that each one was
bought? Well this film does
know people like this because they exist in this small
record store in Chicago.
"High Fidelity" is an original film in the sense that
we don't see too many of those in any given year.
It combines the backdrop of music and the foreground
of dating and both worlds are examined in a rather
precise way.
John Cusack plays Rob and this is quite a performance too. Rob is a small
record store owner that specializes in hard to find records, or records that
the 2 clerks think are good enough for people to buy.
The other two guys that work there "part-time" are pathetic in their own
way. Dick and Barry are complete opposites but one thing that is clear is
their love for music.
Dick (Todd Louiso is very funny in a restrained way !)
is a shy and submissive man that has many opinions but doesn't give them out
as loudly as Barry (Jack Black in an over-the-top and funny performance !)
Barry on the other hand, thinks mainstream music is a plague and only music
he deams worthy is permitted to be played over the speakers in the store.
Any scent of an artist like Stevie Wonder is frowned upon, God only knows
how he would react if Britney Spears was mentioned.
(Uh oh ... lil' fists of rage ?? Sorry Britney !)
These two characters provide much of the comedy in very different ways. It
is refreshing to see a smart comedy like this one try something new every
once in a while.
I am not opposed to films like "Road Trip", "Loser" and other "Coyote Ugly"
(Just don't ask me to see them, PLEASE !) but once in a while it is good
when your brain is not .. repeat NOT .. in the neutral position for 90
minutes while watching a Hollywood comedy. Maybe this is why movies like
"High fidelity" are never big hits at the Box office ?? Too much effort
required !
The heart of the film is about Rob's inability to stay with one woman. He
can always find something wrong with them and this in turn causes him to
break up with them or they seem to find him boring and ordinary and they
leave him.
Rob is also obsessed about "Top five lists". These lists consist of "Top
five" things about everything. Top five records about.. top five songs
about... and top five breakups of course.
Laura (Iben Hjejle is great, excellent acting by everyone in this film in
fact !) is his latest break-up and he does not want to give her the pleasure
of admitting her to the top five so he goes on telling himself how worthless
she really was.
But as the film goes on he can't get her out of his head and wants her back
badly. It is here that Rob decides he will go back to each of his "Top five"
breakups and try to find out what he did wrong by talking to his ex
girlfriends ... He does this in order to change himself so that Laura would
accept to come back to him.
"High Fidelity" is honest, smart, original and funny in many ways, maybe
too many ways because as I said I was feeling the film would have been
better had it been "tightened" a bit ... There were some repetitive scenes
especially near the end. Shortening this movie by 15 or 20 minutes would
make me go up to 3.5/5 for sure. At nearly 2 hours it feels a bit like
"overkill" ...
It is the honesty that I enjoyed about the film the most, well, that and
Barry. After all, a film that can tell you why men are as mobile as they
are and then can end it with a man that apparently has no talent singing his
guts out and sounding like Barry White, well it is not the usual. Films like
this are smart and "Smart films" are not easy to do in Hollywood apparently.
There is also a hilarious cameo by Tim Robbins, Catherine Zeta-Jones appears
as one of Cusacks' ex-girlfriends and Lisa Bonet is a singer that could
become Rob's next
"ex-girlfriend" if only she wanted to ...
3/5

Subject: [MV] Pampered movie stars ...
Hi !
There was a fine article in the newspaper here recently about one of the
greatest actors of all times ... Robert De Niro ... who has just finished
shooting a movie in Montreal.
I can't believe how pampered these movie stars are, think about it the next
time you pay your hard earned money to buy a movie ticket !
Here's the article, It was in french so I translated it, how conveninent !
;o)
- --------------------------------------------------------
"La Presse" newspaper, september 29th, 2000.
By Yves Boisvert
"How is Mr. De Niro ?"
"When Robert De Niro left de "Omni Mount-Royal" hotel on wednesday, he
wasn't asked what credit card he would use to pay the 400,000$ bill - not
counting room service."
"We told him "good bye", gave him a little souvenir and sent the bill to the
producers of the movie "The score" on which he had been working for four
months right here in Montreal along with Marlon Brando."
"For Mr. De Niro's 4 month stay, a suite, even the Presidential one, wasn't
enough obviously. The entire 30th floor was required. 8 large suites so
the family of this great actor could accompany him instead of remaining in
New York city while he was working. 3 young children, their teacher, a
personal trainer, and a few others. A lot of people to take care of."
(...)
"One week before Mr. De Niro's arrival, this Spring, a truck arrived from
the United States with 40,000$ worth of "high-tech" Cybex training
equipment. Then an entire suite on the 30th floor was emptied in order to
turn it into a nice private gym, even the carpet was removed. The hotel has
a gym downstairs of course and it can accomodate hundreds of people at once
but not everybody likes to work out in public as did Ms. Bette Midler when
she was there earlier this year."
"Some stars prefer to rent a luxurious house or apartment rather than live
in a hotel for a few months but they don't have all the services and the
required security so they prefer to stay here and spend a lot of money that
isn't even theirs anyway. The producers pick up the bill, says a hotel
representative. Eddie Murphy is an exception to the rule as he accepted to
be reasonable and rent a house, 20,000$ for a one month shoot in that case."
"At the hotel, the services were available 24 hours a day of course. Mr. De
Niro would begin shooting around noon and then come back to the hotel around
midnight. If he wanted to eat at 2 or 3 am, the restaurant personel had to
be ready because he would of course want a gourmet dinner at that time ..."
"Everytime a celebrity like him stays here, a personal assistant faxes in
advance a list of specific demands made by the star. Specific menus,
mineral water brand, favorite beer, softest soap, etc. Mr. De Niro then
arrived using his own personal jet and was brought from the airport to the
hotel by a limousine."
"When he arrived there was a slight problem as he wanted a huge marble table
moved from one of the suites to the other. It was impossible because it
weighed about 1,000 pounds and could not be transported easily. In fact a
wall would most likely have had to be taken down to do that. So the hotel
bought another similar table instead the very next day and had it installed
to please the VIP."
"Talking about walls, it wasn't a good idea to ask for them to be repainted
as they were already covered by italian wallpaper ... same with the carpet
that was from New Zealand. The antique furniture would also have to remain
in the suites."
"The Omni hotel is used to these demands as they are specialized in taken
care of celebrities, rock stars, movie stars, Race car drivers ... etc. We
have someone whose job is to make sure the VIP guests are 100% satisfied at
all times because they are very good customers ... and three times a year
the hotel owners make a trip to New York and Hollywood in order to meet with
people from the movie and music industries. They bring them to the best
restaurants and talk about the hotel and how they can accomodate the stars
while they are in Montreal."
"Recent guests include Marlon Brando (Limousine service available at all
times), Madonna (4 security guards at 5:30am every morning when she goes out
to do a little jogging), Britney Spears (8 security guards at all times) and
Mick Jagger (He was annoyed by the elevator that was making a "beeping"
sound when the doors opened ... we took care of that ... )"

Nope, you got it right. Best bet is to check IMDb, they'll have the
correct information, and more than you ever wanted to know about any movie:-)

What I have been telling everyone:
Reindeer Games is very cliched and very Hollywood. Not to spoil it, but
the ending has been done to death, and how many times are they going to do
this?? I liked it, have seen much worse movies, but it was also not a
great movie. I would not watch it again, and I have a difficult time
recommending it, especially to people who have some taste in movies.
Mission to Mars reminded me of a cross between The Mummy and 2001. As I
seem to be one of the few that didn't much like The Mummy, I was not overly
impressed with the movie. Also, the orbital mechanics of the Mars landing
were so fictionalised and wrong, it was terrible. Now I have seen other
movies where the impossible has happened (just about any Bond movie), and
had no trouble suspending my disbelief, but I just couldn't do that here.
I would recommend it before Reindeer Games, but I would ask you first if
you enjoyed Science Fiction.

**** Adding comments to yours, Connie !
Oh yeah, I know this is just awful, and we end up paying higher prices
etc.
****** Yes, true .. but I think the prices to go see a movie are still
fairly reasonable these days considering the huge budgets and everything ...
I still encourage people to go see small budget films anyway ... I often
find them better than the big budget ones myself ! Not afraid to take
"risks" because they don't have to please everybody to make money unlike
those huge Hollywood films ... they're not gonna take a whole lot of chances
to do something "different" if they have an investment of
100 M$ in a movie ..
But what I hate is when a rich actor who makes more in one month, then I may
in my whole lifetime asks us to give to charity and acts like 20 dollars
(example) a month is nothing, etc, When they probably give nothing to the
charity and probably are getting paid for the commercial.
***** Yes, reminds me of that commercial with all the retired sports
athletes like Oksana Baiul and all the ex football players like Barry
sanders talking about investment ... gimme a break .. they all have 5-10-50
million dollars in the bank ... how much more do they need ?? They
shouldn't do commercials like that ... so phony and ludicrous ... even our
own Jacques Villeneuve, the Formula one driver is making a phony car
commercial ... the guy is making like 30 M$ a year, yeah I bet he was
impressed when he drove that 20,000$ Volkswagen car.
But I still need my movies, they are wonderful and I perticularly love great
comedies that can make me laugh and smile and enjoy an evening.
***** Good point !! Don't forget the "classics" either ! I just watched "A
fish called Wanda" again a few days ago and was certainly entertained.
So what to do, I wish the stars where paid more reasonably, this whole star
thing got out of hand and esculated, and they should not be making this kind
of money, if you think about it is is truly ridiculous.
***** Yeah, a lot of areas are out of control so this means higher price for
the tickets and products ... commercials and ads everywhere .. on the field,
on the scoreboard ... phew ...
Thanks for translating this to the group Marc, it was interesting to read,
also whom is the actor that has to have m & m's and a certain color had to
be removed from each and every bag??? Connie
***** Hehe !! Yeah, I remember reading something about that ... but wasn't
it a rock band ?? The Rolling Stones perhaps ?? Have a fine day ! Marc
;o)

I can NOT believe that I am about to defend millionaire athletes. First of
all, I can't begrudge them their money, because the billionaire owners are
stupid enough to pay them. Second, their careers are short. But with this
commercial, the idea was the humour of young retirees (the skater knitting,
the basketball players playing shuffelboard), and trying to say to the
public that admires and adores them (hey, that't the public's fault) that
if said company can manage their money (and they do need help, look at all
the athletes and entertainers that end up broke because they can't manage
money. I don't care if you make a million a year, if you spend a million
and one dollars, you are going to find yourself in trouble), think what
they can do with your nestegg.

Got your beat. Got Cocoanuts at home, and I think Duck Soup on deck.:-)

IIRC, it was Aerosmith. Don't know if that was post-drug days, or back
when they were putting all their money up their noses. (Perfect example,
they almost went bankrupt in the early 80s)

Subject: [MV] Movie Times, Psycho and the good ol' days !
***** Did you know that in the good ol' days ... in the 50's and 60's ..
apparently (I wasn't there !) people were showing up at the movie theaters
without thinking about the times the movies started often. They were just
going to the movies whenever they felt like it, not worrying too much about
the "details" like when the movie was beginning ...
I saw some comments about Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960)and how Mr.
Hitchcock was telling in the ads that people should definately show up on
time for that one (I recall in a documentary about Hitch seeing an ad where
he was pointing to his watch and there was a message that basically said
that !) ... suggesting it would be good to arrive on time and not later when
the movie is nearly half over ... he was also to keep the ending a secret
of course, that was the first "SPOILER ALERT" hehe !
It was just expected to go in and sit there whenever you felt like it in
those days !! Also a lot of people were unhappy that Janet Leigh was killed
so they were walking out, thinking ... "Oh why sit through the rest of the
film, the "star" is gone" ... rather intriguing !
At least in those days there were no cell phones and people making fun of
the possessed girl in the Exorcist for example, laughing out loud, getting

But that would still encompass two showings. Another reason I object to
this
idea is that I'm a strong advocate of film as an art form. As such, I
believe
in seeing films as the director intended...and in most cases the director
didn't intend for the audience to watch the second half first. I'm still
baffled that anybody could enjoy a film after showing up at the midway
point.
I get irritated if I miss the opening credits.
