I was wondering if anyone has seen the film Titus? I am trying to decide if I want to buy it on DVD but I have not seen it. In my town this film did not play for a long time. I like Anthony Hopkins and most Shakespeare that is brought to the big screen. I have read the play and it would seem to make a good film. But right now I just wanted to get some opinions about the film.

Most Shakespeare that comes to the screen? That doesn't include DiCaprio's
Romeo + Juliet, does it? Ugh, I couldn't stand that movie. Anyone else
agree? Disagree?

Last I heard, Titus was given a scathing review by a critic. I think it was
Ebert. Maybe you could search the internet databases for reviews from various
sources before deciding on purchasing Titus on DVD

I'm a sucker for teeny type love stories. :-P And Baz Luhrman's take on Romeo and
Juliet is quite interesting. The movie I can't stand is West Side Story, with its
dancing and whatever. Apologies if I insult anyone here, but I'm speaking from
strickly a narrow (like/don't like) point of view. THe worse part was that I had
to sit through a showing of West Side Story in Junior High a few years ago, it was
insufferable.

Well I saw Titus yesterday and have to say it's a little surreal and
very good. It's kind of a mix of Greenaway, Luhrmann and Brannagh.
The director is a theatre legend, and so there's a heavier than
normal emphasis on performance and choreographed movement, but the
real thing that had me loving the film was Sir Anthony Hopkins
giving perhaps his finest performance ever. He's just on fire in
this film. I enjoyed the flick a lot, but it was more out of
appreciation for that performance and the original way it's put
together than anything else, and most filmgoers won't appreciate it,
I'm sure.
It's probably best summed up as Gladiator for the educated.

Ouch. I really resent the modernist notion of high-art and low-art. Instead of saying "Gladiator for the educated", its better to say "Gladiator for those who appreciate Shakespeare and theatre".
I generally just ignore reviewers and people who use education, intellect or whatever kind of intellectual barrier, as a way to degrade some movies while elevating others. A Movie packed full of allusions and intellectual insight doesn't guarantee truth and quality, and sometimes, the most basic stories are the ones that lasts.

No, I dispute that. Titus is a movie that relies on the viewer to
look into, rather than just at, the story. Gladiator is a film that
requires nothing more than looking at what has been computer created
on the screen. Don't get me wrong, I loved Glads, got right into it,
but I knew all along it was pap. And for the record, before watching
this film I had no knowledge of the original Shakespeare it was
adapted from, nor do I assume anything on the stage is art. I just
happen to think what's good about the stage was added here to what's
been good about previous Shakespearian filmmakers and the end result
was a thinker, not a stinker.

And then there's Big Momma's House. So...

But of course. You're implying that Gladiator's visuals had a lot to do with its
success. For the record, the computer generated scenes of Rome was luckluster at
best. There are shots that stank amateur. The real brilliance of the movie is how
the artists turned a scale model fragment of the Coliseum into the real thing
without attracting attention to it. Most people wouldn't even realize much of the
top tear of the Coliseum in the shot was totally CG.
In anycase, most of the film don't rely on computers to put on a visual feast. In
fact, Titus is the more visually stunning of the two. It is assumptions like this
that peeves me.

I'm fine with that. But that's not what I took issue with. We all know what you
meant when you said Titus was "Gladiator for the Educated". And that just doesn't
sit right with me. Intellectuals insult me.

That's a good movie actually, but it had nothing to do with the discussion.
