...actually I kind of liked how it was set in the gulf war. (being a young
one...:) it was kind of fun watching a movie that took place in a war that I
actually lived through.

have spoken to tell me it was horrible. The way I see it, rating a movie,
any movie, is based entirely on one's personal preferences. I was told that
was told that it was all fighting, no real story. Personally, I think I
would enjoy that. For those of us who say that a certain movie "sucked", or
was "crap", or any other comment of this nature, maybe we should rephrase

Other personal favorites from this year include
South Park
The Mummy
Austin Powers, I and II
They weren't the best movies ever made, but they were fun to watch. I
saw all three at the View and Brew, a movie house here in Chicago.
With pizza, beer, and smokes, it was an enjoyable evening.

Anybody who says FIGHT CLUB is all fighting with no real story has not seen
FIGHT CLUB. The first fight doesn't even occur until about 1/3 of the way
into the film!

Of course, that's obvious.

I don't think so. "I prefer others" is a pretty mild term, and not suitable
for all movies that we dislike.
For example, when it comes to THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, I prefer other heist movies.
I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, on the other hand, was a load of cow
dung. There's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back. What a waste of
celluoid. I wouldn't wish this movie on my worst enemy. Even the title sucks!
Come to think of it, anybody could say "I prefer others" about all movies
they've seen, except for two.
> Finally hearing somebody say that they

Look hard enough, you'll find somebody that enjoyed any movie out there.

I almost hate to contribute to that top 5 list, as I have not yet been much
impressed by anything this year, at least certainly not like I was last
year. I will list my top 5, then a couple of others that almost make it.
1.Sixth Sense
2.Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels (I know it's a 98 technically, but it
didn't get to the US til March of this year)
3.Three Kings
4.October Sky
5.Payback
Some others that could interchange up here - The Matrix, Bringing Out the
dead, Austin Powers... I would actually top out this list with A Simple
Plan, as it didn't get in my town until January, but it is really a 98
release, so I'm not counting it here.
And I havent' seen fight club yet.. But I have seen American Beauty. Snore.

Why don't you go see the movie for yourself? Don't judge movies that you
see off of what other people say, It's a matter of personal opinion. I
really enjoyed the film, it had a great story and the acting was wonderful,
plus in my opinion Martin Scorsese is one of the best and hardly ever makes a
bad film. But that is my opinion.
And for those people who say that Fight Club had no real story, did you sleep
through the whole film? That movie was filled with so many messages, if you
couldn't find some of these messages you didn't pay a lot of attention to the
film.

FlickPicks (http://www.flickpicks.com) currently rates "Dead" at 2 stars
(out a possible 5) with highly mixed comments. This places it 35th out
of 41 current films listed.

I actually wasn't planning on seeing Fight Club. I too, just from seeing
the previews thought it was just going to be some boys beating each other
up. But a friend of mine saw it, and (since he knows I see a lot of movies
:) came to me to talk about it....but of course I hadn't seen it...which is
how i ended up going to it. (yadda yadda, right?!)
I thought it did have a story. Infact it actually gets a little "deep"
concerning society's materiality, and it has a great twist. It's a little
disturbing, but I came out with all my expectations exceeded. But maybe
that's the best way to go into a movie...not knowing that much about it, and
not expecting anything (much)!

Subject: Re: [MV] Bringing out the Dead
I think Bringing Out The Dead is actually pretty good. It's hard to call it
enjoyable or anything, as it is rather depressing and dark. BUT, it is an
amazingly crafted and acted film. Cage does a very good job as a burned out
edgy paramedic, as do all the supporting actors as his emt partners, John
Goodman as no nonsense and emotionally detached, Ving Rhames as
enthusiatically evangelical, and Tom Sizemore as joyously psychotic.
The plot is simple, basically Cage is an emt named Frank, and the movie
covers three days in his life, beginning with his hallucinations of a young
girl he failed to save a few months earlier, and transporting him across
those days in a complicated and interesting structure involving a young
woman whose father had a heart attack (Patricia Arquette), a dread-locked
schizophrenic (Marc Anthony), and a drug dealer (Cliff Curtis - He played
the Iraqi "rebel" in Three Kings). It's interesting that the movie
transverses across the days from dealing with these various characters
through Cage's diverging mental state along the lines of the kinds of
background for each differing emt partner's persona. The plot is not too
concrete, but the way it is presented and the way the movie ends sort of
compounds the feelings we are suposed to feel about Frank as a character I
think. Not going to reveal any specifics to you there.
There's humor, but it is often odd and dark and usually revolves around
Cage's various partners, such as Goodman's preoccupation with lunch, Rhames'
use of a drug OD as an excuse to preach to a group of teenage goths, and
Sizemore's impulses to intimidate those who call for the emts. Then of
course, there's the moanings and groanings of Cage, of which may be the
funniest part in the movie may be when he complains to his boss that he is
supposed to be fired for coming in late, and the boss tells him each day,
"I'll fire you tomorrow. I promise!" The humor is strange.. gallows humor
you could say.
And, when matched with the hyperkinetic frenzy of Scorcese's various shots,
it is hallucinatory in and of itself. There are some seriously strange and
bizarre shots and compositions in this movie, and it is quite appropriate or
accentuating to the concurring aspect of the plot. The movie itself seems
almost incongruous to Scorcese's style, but the overall mood and
cinematography is very characteristic of what we've seen from him. And, the
soundtrack - what an odd bird! Some great songs, but they seem so odd where
they are placed throught the movie, songs by REM, The Who, The Clash,
Sinatra, as well as the occasional bluesy instrumental background. I liked
the way the songs were scattered through the film.
If you want to see a Scorcese film, go see it. It's not action-comedy, or a
thriller; the commercials seem to try to paint it as a comedy of some sort,
but it's a serious drama with strange bits of humor and melodrama. It is not
a movie for everyone either. It's artistic and visually fascinating, and
there is an interesting structure to the premise and great acting, but it is
a rather depressing movie. If you want to see something entertaining, this
is not the movie. It's not a movie you will enjoy but one you will
appreciate. It is one to think about and mull over. Easily an 8 out of 10
from me. Maybe even better than that.

FlickPicks (http://www.flickpicks.com) currently rates "Dead" at 2 stars

How bizarre. Hollywood Bitchslap (http://hollywoodbitchslap.com) has
Bringing Out The Dead at 4.43 out of a possible 5 stars, making it
second behind The Best Man in this week's releases, and number six
among all films currently in release. HBS also has two reviews of
the film at the following URL:

I also didn't particularly enjoy that movie but, for those few who did,
calling it "cow dung", as you so elegantly put it, may make some people
offended. This is the main reason I use the terms "I prefer others".
However, I must agree with you that it is a mild term and if you need to
express more vividly the amount of dismay a movie has brought upon you,
these would hardly be the proper words. 15-LOVE

You know what, dude? Screw people who get offended. There's nothing
that irks me more than people running around saying "you offended
me". We can't show any teenage violence because someone who knows
someone who was at Columbine will be offended. We can't swear
because someone who can't control their kid will be offended. We
can't question religion because The Catholic League will boycott us.
Screw people who take offence. Learn to ignore what you don't like.
I Still Know What You Did Last summer *was* cow dung. And you know
what else? It was utter gobshite. And it was total crap. And anyone,
anywhere who paid seven bucks to see it and came out thinking they
got their money's worth needs to strap in to a jacket with no
sleeves and dose up on the 'phine..
Offended? I'm offended people think they can get away with making
such drek.
PS: Offense given freely to those who choose to accept it.

I admire your honesty. You should hook up with Dennis Leary. You two would
make a good duo, but would probably agree on everything. I sometimes wish I
thought like you do so I can express how I really feel, but I am one of
those that hold back. Why? You tell me.
