I agree that American Beauty was a much better movie from a technical
standpoint and Double Jeopardy was so full of holes in the story etc.
HOWEVER, my wife and I both enjoyed Double Jeopardy much more of the two.
It was just a more fun movie. They were both good but Jeopardy was better.
I was very pleasantly surprised with it.

I saw a sneak preview of a really good new movie. It's called "Girl Interupted"
which stars Winona Ryder as the
main character,a disturbed young woman who is checked into a mental
institution.It's a little like a female
version of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and co-stars Angela Jolie, and many
other familiar faces which I
can't remember.----Dave

I have to give it to that film, it was somewhat entertaining, but I =

When the previews for the Judd movie first came out, I knew that I
didn't want to see it because in less than 30 seconds I knew that
Ashley Judd had been framed for the murder of husband, goes to jail,
meets a lawyer in jail (good place for them), gets out of jail, and
successfully meets up with hr husband and happens to have Tommy Lee
Jones there with her. There was no thrill left because I knew Ashley
would be triumphant.
After reading Oz's rather intellectual break down of some of the
scenes, I know I don't want to see it unless it's on tape so I can
fast forward through to the more "meaty" parts. Why pay $8.00 for a
thriller where I know the ending? Just wait till it hits Blockbuster
and see for $1.99.
If you want to see a thriller, rent Diabolique (French version). It's
got women as the lead characters, an adulterous affair, murder, and a
twist ending. Or for a very strong female lead character, check out
Lena Olin in Romeo's Bleeding. She is fabulous!

Okay, I'll list the reasons this movie was a stinkbomb. Perhaps
they're reasons that matter to me and not to most folks, but
regardless, here's my list.
The cliches (potential spoilers, but not really):
1. The burnt out old cop with no heart, no ambition and a drinking
problem? Gee, do ya think he'll loosen up at some point? Jackie
Brown anyone?
2. The arrogant young boss cop who yells down the phone continually
"you get your ass back to Detroit!" Beverly Hills Cop anyone?
3. The scenes where Ashley Judd decides she's gonna be a tough momma
and starts working out. Geez, we saw this crap in Terminator, GI
Jane, Officer And A Gentleman. Having her cellmate watching her
jogging in the rain and yelling "you ain't runnin' on nothin' but
pure hatred, girl!" was the funniest part of the movie. Is this to
indicate she's a "strong woman"? I don't know. I'm a man, we can't
see these things.
4. The bumbling old crusty art delaer who doesn't have a clue what
all the fuss is about.
5. The evil businessman husband who pretends to be nice. To attempt
to portray him as nice we're introduced to him at a fundraiser for a
"children's school". As opposed to a senior citizens' school, I
guess. Lamo. Easy option.
6. Of the thousands of inmates at the prison, Ashley just happens to
befriend a lawyer. Oh please. It's more likely she'd befriend an
axe-wielding lesbian with one eye.
7. It seems that with one click on the internet you can get the
names, addresses and phone numbers of every teacher in America.
Someone should keep that information away from the kids.
8. ***SPOILER!*** When the bad guy captures Ashley, he doesn't kill
her, he just locks her away. Zzzz. How very James Bond.
9. ***SPOILER*** Being chased through a crowd of people, cops on her
tail, twisting, turning, diving around every corner, losing her,
seeing her again, they finally get close and spin the woman with the
red umbrella around... do you REALLY think it's Ashley? Seriously,
do ya? I mean, have you ever seen another movie, ever? This cliche
is used ALL the time. I spotted it coming a mile and a half away.
10. ***SPOILER*** Ashley wakes on the boat, covered in blood,
stumbles through the boat wondering where her hubby has gone, finds
her way to the top deck, spots a bloodied knife on the deck, PICKS
IT UP (maybe she thought her husband was underneath it.. or
something) juuuuuuuust as the coast guard boat arrives. Wow, what
neat timing.
11. ***SPOILER*** When Ashley is cuffed to her door handle on the
car ferry and starts reversing and forwarding the car to try to
break the handle on a protruding boat pipe (how coincidental) she's
bashing into other cars, even pushes one of the front of the boat
into the water, but NOBODY hears or sees anything suspicious. Oh
come on.
Wake up people, this wasn't a thriller. Yes, it was suspenseful in
parts, but thrilling? Not a once. It was cack. I give it 1 star.
If you want to see a movie that portrays a strong woman, go rent
Betty Blue. Or Thelma and Louise. Or Once Were Warriors.
But running around a prisonyard in the rain does not make a woman
strong. It makes her wet.

Apocalypse Now, Platoon and A Force of Arms. The Counterfeit Traitor is

Most recently though I enjoyed The Thin Red Line. 10X better than Saving
Private Ryan.

I expected to have discussions with others via e-mail about movies at
this site. What I wasn't expecting was to occasionally get a good
laugh as well. Today's exchanges have been great.
To the "Excuuuuuuuusssssssss Meeeeeeeeeeee Ozzzzzzzyyyy" dude: thanks

To call Thin Red Line 10x better than Saving Private Ryan is ill-judged
(In my opinion). The two films were 10x different from each other, but
both conveyed the message of the horror of war. My personal fave is
Thin Red Line, down to content and execution, however, you cannot negate
the brilliance of Spielbergs' Private Ryan, and the Omaha Beach opening
attack will truly stand out as a classic piece of cinema.

Private Ryan.

Both excellent movies! I just watched Apocalypse Now again last weekend on
Encore. Amazing movie. It's also hilarious to see Lawrence Fishburne as a
punk teenager. There are so many good things about that movie, which is not
a typical war movie, which is what makes it so good.
I personally liked Three Kings. It's hard to call it much of a war movie,
especially since the war was basically over during the movie's plot. But, it
is still set there at that time. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Very funny
and some fascinating direction.

SPOLIER FOR FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE!
I think one of the funniest scenes I can remember in a war movie is after
Ford and the other character (was it Edward fox's? I don't remember) blew
the bomb in the dam and then ran out of there, right past some german
soldiers, who were startled by them at first then turned and ran right
behind them when they heard the dam begin to break. I laughed so hard at
that.

when i first saw the previews for "three kings", i wasnt very interested
in it, although i was astonished to see that it was directed by david o.
russell - he directed "spanking the monkey", which is a very bizarre
movie, and "flirting with disaster" with ben stiller and patricia
arquette, and alan alda as an lsd-cook, which is a hilarious movie. it
just didnt seem like anything russell would make - similar to my
astonishment at seeing previews for "out of sight", which wasnt what i
would have expected from steven soderbergh, especially after
"schizopolis".
but i think i am going to eventually check out "three kings".

Good Call. They are very different movies. TRL is a much more
metaphysical-ish (hahaha) type of movie, more existential in how the
characters and plots interwine. It is a very complex movie, and it has some
amazing shots. I actually like some of the battle scenes in this movie
better than SPR, but that is because I like the sort of eerie majestic
nature and colorful depiction of it, as opposed to the overwhelming chaos
and fear in SPR (which is less artistic in a certain way but certainly more
realistic). But, I like SPR better I think, and I found it a tremendous
experience.

My favorite scenes from Apocalypse Now are: Duval and his men are
flying in their helicopters. Wagner's Ride of the Valkyre is blasting
in the background as the camera zooms in on the gun turrets in time
with the music. The second one is when Duval and his men are going
out to catch a wave during the fighting.
Have you seen the documentary Hearts of Darkness that Coppola's wife
shot. It's a nice follow up to Apocalypse Now.

I enjoyed Flirting with Disaster too for the most part, and yeah, it is hard
to believe that this is the same director. It is a WILDLY different style,
although the characters in Three Kings are written fairly well. The thing i
was trying to say I think is that is barely a war movie, but it still sort
of fits that category, since it deals with the gulf war and its aspects.
It's sort of a caper-buddy movie but even that's too simplistic, and more
about some american soldiers seeing the gulf war from some of the iraqi
population's standpoint. It has some moral issues and all, and it gets a
little melodramatic (barely), but it has some GREAT dialogue, funny
observations, good acting, some amazing direction, basically a very witty
and well done movie, much more intelligent than many people realize.

Not strictly a war film, but a film set in wartime, has anyone seen "The
Hill" starring Sean Connery. From what I can remember it is a truly
gripping film, regarding an army Prison (I think, it has been many years
since I last saw it).
