Subject: Sequel Trilogy

It is rumored at Lucasfilm that Lucas is having so much fun making the
Prequel Trilogy that he is now talking about the Sequel Trilogy (Ep. 7 - 9).
Lucas thinks it would be interesting to see what Luke, Han and Leia are up to
in their sixties/seventies. The sequels would likely occur 35 to 40 years
after Return of the Jedi (ROTJ). But don't get your hope up just yet -
pre-production on Episode 7 won't begin until 2015 at the earliest. It looks
like Lucas is now changing his mind about never making sequels to ROTJ.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Highlights of the overseas box office
weekend saw "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" overwhelm
France, "The Haunting" horrify Germany, "Deep Blue Sea" and American
Pie" captivate the United Kingdom, "The Sixth Sense" maintain a
strong hold in Australia and "The Blair Witch Project" unnerving
Mexico and Hong Kong. "Phantom," making its final bow in a major
market, blasted into France with $11 million in five days, setting an
all-time record for the opening of an American film in the market.
Two local films, "Asterisk and Obelix" and "Les Visiteurs II," held
on to the all-time No. 1 and No. 2 opening marks, although the "Star
Wars" prequel beat "Asterisk" for opening-day honors.

"The Haunting" scared up $3.7 million at 541 screens for its opening
round in Germany, narrowly topping the third weekend of "Runaway
Bride" ($3.6 million at 843), and beating the third-place bow of
"Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" ($2.5 million at 623). Aided,
too, by the European promo tour of director Jan de Bont, "Haunting"
received strong support from his native Holland, with $420,320 in
four days, contributing to a $7.7 million weekend from 16 markets.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Meg Ryan has dropped out of the Frederic
Raphael-scripted drama "This Man, This Woman" after Sean Penn said he
was not the man for "This Man." Ryan, who previously worked with Penn
in "Hurlyburly" and wanted to reteam with the actor, had a $3 million
pay-or-play deal that was contingent on approving both the male lead
and the project's shooting dates. With no co-star in sight, Ryan
could not commit to "This Man," so she passed on the project rather
than keep producer Mike Lobell and director Richard Loncraine in
limbo on the project which is based on a 1996 Esquire article by Lynn
Darling. Meanwhile, "The Pledge" - Sean Penn and Jack Nicholson's
first pairing since "The Crossing Guard" - may get going sooner than
expected. Sources said Penn turned down "This Man" in favor of moving
forward on his next directorial outing. Elie Samaha's Franchise
Pictures is expected to green-light the 1950s-era police thriller.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The number 666 is coming up again. A movie is
in the works about the scandal that resulted from a fixed
Pennsylvania Lottery drawing of 666 in the Daily Number game in 1980.
John Travolta may star in "Numbers," which could begin filming next
month. Nora Ephron is directing. "It's my understanding that it's
going to be sort of a humorous look at the lottery or lotteries in
general," Pennsylvania Lottery spokeswoman Sally Danyluk said
Monday. "I don't think we'll ever laugh about that." The fixed
drawing paid $3.8 million, a record high at the time, to a total of
eight people. A lottery district manager and the announcer of the
televised drawing were sent to prison.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - After taking a break from directing to
co-found Elephant Walk Entertainment, Doug McHenry is returning to
his former craft, signing on to direct Fox Searchlight's comedy
"Kingdom Come." The project, described as being in the "Soul Food"
vein, is aiming for a January start date. McHenry, who last directed
1994's "Jason's Lyric," has left his day-to-day management duties at
Elephant Walk to concentrate on his directing career. Written by
David Botrell and Jessie Jones from Botrell's stage play, "Kingdom"
is a soulful comedy about three days in the life of a family who sets
aside their conflicts and gathers to bury their not-so-dearly
departed patriarch.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Director Daniel Myrick, who helped make the
low-budget blockbuster "The Blair Witch Project," says he doesn't
want to be pigeonholed. The film, co-directed by Myrick and Eduardo
Sanchez, originally cost about $70,000. It has taken in about $140
million and only recently fell out of the box office top 20. "Every
producer in L.A. dusted off some old bad script and sent it to us"
after the "Blair Witch" success, Myrick said. "But we didn't want to
be pigeonholed into doing horror." Myrick's fans greeted him Tuesday
night during his appearance at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham. He said he was unprepared for sudden fame.

"All of a sudden you're doing a photo shoot for Premiere magazine.
The whole thing took us by surprise," he said. Myrick and Sanchez are
working on a film comedy called "Heart of Love," which Myrick called
a cross between Monty Python and "Airplane," with a bit of "Saturday
Night Live." They're also developing a TV show.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Movie producer Matthew Crouch went to an odd place
to promote his new thriller, which features cutting-edge special
effects and lots of chases after stolen computer discs. He went to
church. Five days before his new film "Omega Code" opened last
Friday, Crouch showed the movie's two-minute promotional trailer
during Sunday services in Houston. It got a standing ovation, and the
"pastor's two sisters told me afterward, 'We're going to this movie,
and we've never been in a theater before,'" Crouch said. Like the
summer's biggest surprise hit, "The Blair Witch Project," Crouch's
latest film has built a groundswell of interest on a shoestring
budget. This time, church volunteers have helped spread the word
about the movie with a religious theme.

Playing in just 304 theaters, the film cracked the Top 10, taking in
$2.4 million its opening weekend and earning a per screen average of
$7,745. By comparison, "Fight Club," the heavily hyped film with
A-list stars like Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, earned $5,662 in
nearly 2,000 theaters. "I'm as shocked as you are we were No. 10 and
had the top-grossing number," Crouch said. "That is David and Goliath
stuff." Starring Michael York, Casper Van Dien and Catherine
Oxenberg, the biblical thriller centers on efforts to stop a villain
from using a stolen secret Bible code to take over the world. The
controversial idea that the Old Testament contains hidden references
has been the subject of numerous studies, and recently was the
subject of the 1997 bestseller "The Bible Code" by Michael Drosnin.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston is attached
to star in 20th Century Fox's romantic comedy "Against the Glass" for
producers Tag Mendillo and Andrew Form. The project is expected to go
out to directors by year's end with a possible late spring start date
to accommodate Aniston's TV hiatus. Written by John Levenstein,
"Glass" is the story of a young woman (Aniston) who agrees to be
observed by a psychology class via a two-way mirror in exchange for
free therapy sessions. When she discovers that her ex-boyfriend has
joined the class in an effort to win her back, she turns the tables
on him. "Glass" marks the third project involving "Friends" stars for
Mendillo and Form. The duo produced the David Schwimmer-toplined
"Kissing a Fool" for Universal Pictures and the indie feature "The
Shrink Is In," which stars Courteney Cox and recently wrapped
production.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Warner Bros. plunked down mid-six figures
against high-six figures for "Roaches," a comedy animation feature
pitch from Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Buddy Johnson and Michael Anthony
Snowden. The four scribes will collaborate on the script for
"Roaches," which will center on a class struggle in the insect world.
Various insect species will represent different races and the various
socioeconomic levels of our society. The Wayans brothers will lend
their voices to the feature. The Wayanses are expected to be
additionally compensated for their performances and producing duties.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The only thing holding up a fourth Indiana
Jones movie is an agreement by Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg on
a script, according to George Lucas. "We have a script - it's all
finished," Lucas said during an interview recorded this year on a
rereleased version of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," part of a
new Paramount Home Video promotion of the movie and TV franchise to
be introduced next week on VHS. Ford said he is on board for a fourth
installment, and Spielberg talked about it as if it's a go. It's just
a matter of making sure the script is right. "We're being a little
more prejudicial," Spielberg said. "We don't want the fourth Indiana
Jones movie to leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth."

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Tobacco whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand says the
movie "The Insider" takes some liberties with his story, but is
essentially accurate. In one scene, the former Brown & Williamson
executive is portrayed as hitting golf balls at a driving range while
a burly man watches him. "Did that happen? No," Wigand said
Wednesday. But Wigand said the movie starring Al Pacino as "60
Minutes" producer Lowell Bergman accurately portrays the kinds of
threats he and his family faced after publicly addressing health and
smoking issues in 1995. The movie opens in November. "Its fidelity to
the actual facts is acceptable," Wigand said. Wigand was in Nebraska
to give speeches on his experiences. He said he is donating his
speaking fees to his nonprofit organization, Smoke-Free Kids, based
in Charleston, S.C.

as Hugh Grant's quirky roommate in "Notting Hill," is set to star
opposite Adam Sandler in New Line Cinema's comedy "Little Nicky."
Principal photography is slated to start Nov. 2 in New York with
Steven Brill at the helm. "Nicky" tells the story of a young demon
(Sandler) who embarks on a journey from hell to New York City to find
his runaway brother (Ifans), now wreaking havoc on Earth. The brother
had left home after a fight with their father, Satan (Harvey Keitel),
who refused to let him take over the family business. Sandler penned
the screenplay with his writing partner Tim Herlihy ("The Wedding
Singer," "Billy Madison"). Ifans is currently working on Warner Bros.
"The Replacements" with Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman. He recently
finished work on "Kevin and Perry - The Movie," a British feature
based on two characters in BBC's sketch show "Harry Enfield and
Chums," and will next be seen in "Rancid Aluminum" opposite Joseph
Fiennes.

Thanks, but having seen the flick I really want to forget about it.
I can't remember a flick with more cliches since Patch Adams slimed
it's wy across my screen. The real shame of Double Jeopardy is that
it was a REALLY REALLY good premise. I'm shocked that a director
with the talent of Bruce Beresford could perform such a botch job on
it.

I guess it's nice that some people liked it, but people ain't always
too bright.

    I do also agree with what Patricia had to say about the discussion and
the movie, I rather enjoyed to movie and I would see it again. It was one
that make me think and wonder what she was going to do next. I thought that
it was a movie that not all persons would relate with (men) manly and that
being that I don't think that men can relate every well with a head strong
women who is willing to take things into her own hands to get something done.
I also think that this is about movies and not what you think of someone's
intelligence.

The Ghostbusters Headquarters Web site recently
received a video clip that features Dan Aykroyd
talking about the upcoming Ghostbusters 3 movie.
According to Aykroyd, he and several of the other
Ghostbusters principals are currently "strategizing with
Sony" on how to develop the franchise.

"We're just working out the business details to move
Ghostbusters into the next generation," Aykroyd said. "I
have a first draft of the script. It needs a lot of work, but
at least now something exists, whereas a year or so ago
it didn't."

Mighty Aphrodite's Michael Rapaport and Species 2's
Sarah Wynter will join Arnold Schwarzenegger in the
SF action thriller The Sixth Day. According to Variety,
Schwarzenegger will take on the role of a man who learns
he has been replaced by a clone, while Rapaport will play
his best friend.

Wynter will play the female lead in the picture, an
assassin whose job it is to kill Schwarzenegger's
character. The movie is being directed by Tomorrow
Never Dies helmer Roger Spottiswoode.

MGM is trying to sell the international distribution rights
to its troubled SF film Supernova. Variety reports
that the studio plans to screen the $60 million picture
for potential buyers in the coming weeks.

It's not clear why MGM is trying to pawn off Supernova,
although early reports indicate the film simply doesn't live
up to its sizable price tag. The picture has also been
plagued with problems from the outset, with two directors
having quit the project.

Geoffrey Wright had originally signed on to helm the
movie, but he left after bumping heads with studio
executives. Walter Hill was brought in to finish the
picture, but he quit the film after the principal
photography was completed in 1998.

Director Walter Hill has decided to remove his name
from MGM's big-budget SF film Supernova. According
to The Hollywood Reporter, Hill and MGM are trying to
agree on a pseudonym to use for the director's credit,
instead of the generic "Alan Smithee" moniker normally
defaulted to in such situations.

Hill joined Supernova in 1998 after helmer Geoffrey Wright
departed the picture just two months into principal
photography due to creative differences with the studio.
Hill took the project through post-production and then
turned in a final edit in February, although a Reporter
source says he was also unhappy with MGM.

After Hill, Lindsey Doran and director Jack Sholder took a
crack at Supernova, which didn't do well with test
audiences despite their efforts. Currently MGM vice
chairman Chris McGurk and Francis Ford Coppola are trying
to fix the troubled movie.

Supernova stars James Spader, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lou
Diamond Phillips, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster in a
story about a rescue mission sent to recover a damaged
spaceship, only to run into a black hole. The film is slated
for a January 2000 release in the United States.

Okay, I'll list the reasons this movie was a stinkbomb. Perhaps
they're reasons that matter to me and not to most folks, but
regardless, here's my list.

The cliches (potential spoilers, but not really):
1. The burnt out old cop with no heart, no ambition and a drinking
problem? Gee, do ya think he'll loosen up at some point? Jackie
Brown anyone?
2. The arrogant young boss cop who yells down the phone continually
"you get your ass back to Detroit!" Beverly Hills Cop anyone?
3. The scenes where Ashley Judd decides she's gonna be a tough momma
and starts working out. Geez, we saw this crap in Terminator, GI
Jane, Officer And A Gentleman. Having her cellmate watching her
jogging in the rain and yelling "you ain't runnin' on nothin' but
pure hatred, girl!" was the funniest part of the movie. Is this to
indicate she's a "strong woman"? I don't know. I'm a man, we can't
see these things.
4. The bumbling old crusty art delaer who doesn't have a clue what
all the fuss is about.
5. The evil businessman husband who pretends to be nice. To attempt
to portray him as nice we're introduced to him at a fundraiser for a
"children's school". As opposed to a senior citizens' school, I
guess. Lamo. Easy option.
6. Of the thousands of inmates at the prison, Ashley just happens to
befriend a lawyer. Oh please. It's more likely she'd befriend an
axe-wielding lesbian with one eye.
7. It seems that with one click on the internet you can get the
names, addresses and phone numbers of every teacher in America.
Someone should keep that information away from the kids.
8. ***SPOILER!*** When the bad guy captures Ashley, he doesn't kill
her, he just locks her away. Zzzz. How very James Bond.
9. ***SPOILER*** Being chased through a crowd of people, cops on her
tail, twisting, turning, diving around every corner, losing her,
seeing her again, they finally get close and spin the woman with the
red umbrella around... do you REALLY think it's Ashley? Seriously,
do ya? I mean, have you ever seen another movie, ever? This cliche
is used ALL the time. I spotted it coming a mile and a half away.
10. ***SPOILER*** Ashley wakes on the boat, covered in blood,
stumbles through the boat wondering where her hubby has gone, finds
her way to the top deck, spots a bloodied knife on the deck, PICKS
IT UP (maybe she thought her husband was underneath it.. or
something) juuuuuuuust as the coast guard boat arrives. Wow, what
neat timing.
11. ***SPOILER*** When Ashley is cuffed to her door handle on the
car ferry and starts reversing and forwarding the car to try to
break the handle on a protruding boat pipe (how coincidental) she's
bashing into other cars, even pushes one of the front of the boat
into the water, but NOBODY hears or sees anything suspicious. Oh
come on.

Wake up people, this wasn't a thriller. Yes, it was suspenseful in
parts, but thrilling? Not a once. It was cack. I give it 1 star.

If you want to see a movie that portrays a strong woman, go rent
Betty Blue. Or Thelma and Louise. Or Once Were Warriors.

But running around a prisonyard in the rain does not make a woman
strong. It makes her wet.

     When the previews for the Judd movie first came out, I knew that I
     didn't want to see it because in less than 30 seconds I knew that
     Ashley Judd had been framed for the murder of husband, goes to jail,
     meets a lawyer in jail (good place for them), gets out of jail, and
     successfully meets up with hr husband and happens to have Tommy Lee
     Jones there with her.  There was no thrill left because I knew Ashley
     would be triumphant.

     After reading Oz's rather intellectual break down of some of the
     scenes, I know I don't want to see it unless it's on tape so I can
     fast forward through to the more "meaty" parts.  Why pay $8.00 for a
     thriller where I know the ending?  Just wait till it hits Blockbuster
     and see for $1.99.

     If you want to see a thriller, rent Diabolique (French version).  It's
     got women as the lead characters, an adulterous affair, murder, and a
     twist ending.  Or for a very strong female lead character, check out
     Lena Olin in Romeo's Bleeding.  She is fabulous!

jogging in the rain and yelling "you ain't runnin' on nothin' but
pure hatred, girl!" was the funniest part of the movie. Is this to
indicate she's a "strong woman"? I don't know. I'm a man, we can't
see these things.
4. The bumbling old crusty art delaer who doesn't have a clue what
all the fuss is about.
5. The evil businessman husband who pretends to be nice. To attempt
to portray him as nice we're introduced to him at a fundraiser for a
"children's school". As opposed to a senior citizens' school, I
guess. Lamo. Easy option.
6. Of the thousands of inmates at the prison, Ashley just happens to
befriend a lawyer. Oh please. It's more likely she'd befriend an
axe-wielding lesbian with one eye.
7. It seems that with one click on the internet you can get the
names, addresses and phone numbers of every teacher in America.
Someone should keep that information away from the kids.
8. ***SPOILER!*** When the bad guy captures Ashley, he doesn't kill
her, he just locks her away. Zzzz. How very James Bond.
9. ***SPOILER*** Being chased through a crowd of people, cops on her
tail, twisting, turning, diving around every corner, losing her,
seeing her again, they finally get close and spin the woman with the
red umbrella around... do you REALLY think it's Ashley? Seriously,
do ya? I mean, have you ever seen another movie, ever? This cliche
is used ALL the time. I spotted it coming a mile and a half away.
10. ***SPOILER*** Ashley wakes on the boat, covered in blood,
stumbles through the boat wondering where her hubby has gone, finds
her way to the top deck, spots a bloodied knife on the deck, PICKS
IT UP (maybe she thought her husband was underneath it.. or
something) juuuuuuuust as the coast guard boat arrives. Wow, what
neat timing.
11. ***SPOILER*** When Ashley is cuffed to her door handle on the
car ferry and starts reversing and forwarding the car to try to
break the handle on a protruding boat pipe (how coincidental) she's
bashing into other cars, even pushes one of the front of the boat
into the water, but NOBODY hears or sees anything suspicious. Oh
come on.

Wake up people, this wasn't a thriller. Yes, it was suspenseful in
parts, but thrilling? Not a once. It was cack. I give it 1 star.

If you want to see a movie that portrays a strong woman, go rent
Betty Blue. Or Thelma and Louise. Or Once Were Warriors.

But running around a prisonyard in the rain does not make a woman
strong. It makes her wet.
