Try Luis Bunuel if you want crazy - like Phantom of Liberty or Exterminating
Angel. Cinema Paradiso is a must for every film buff, Leolo is Canadian but
has subtitles if that counts as foriegn - it is really crazy too. For
action stick with John Woo - like the Killer or Hard Boiled. Another crazy
one that is foriegn but english is called Santa Sangre - amazing crazy film!
If you like Horror then try Dario Argento - like Terror at the Opera or
Suspiria if you like gore but don't mind cheesey acting. The Dutch version
of The Vanishing is amazing. The Ugly from New Zealand, Funny Games from
Germany, any Fritz Lang though most of his available stuff is American
anyways, Il Postino and Life is Beautiful for more modern foriegn...that's
all I can think of right now - hope I'm not too late!!

Strictly Ballroom is one of the greatest films ever made. However, I know
a lot of people that hate the first ten minutes. If you get thru that,
tho, you'll most likely love the movie.
Really, tho, it depends on your audience. The Adventures of Priscilla,
Queen of the Desert is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, but
some people are turned off by the cross-dressing themes. If your audience
is open-minded, consider that.
For a more conservative audience, you might consider The Year My Voice
Broke. This is a great coming-of-age film. I like it a LOT better than
the sequel, Flirting (one of Nicole Kidman's first roles), but most critics
rate Flirting higher.
>If you mean a foreign _language_ film, try "Das Boot"
Good choice, that, as well. Also, we have La Femme Nikita in Frence, and
Antonia's Line in Dutch.
There are so many GOOD Foreign films, but I think these are the best of the
best.

anything by akira kurosawa, but specifically:
"the seven samurai", "rashomon", "yojimbo", "the hidden fortress", "ran",
or "kagemusha".
"les voleurs", directed by andre techine, starring catherine deneuve and
daniel auteuil. very well crafted story.
"les visiteurs", a hilarious french movie with jean reno.
"the seventh seal", directed by ingmar bergman. excellent, early bergman
movie (in swedish) with max von sydow.

This afternoon we saw Shakespeare in Love. My wife liked it a great deal.
I, on the other hand, thought it was a beautifully made, beautifully acted,
well staged, boring, boring, boring movie. We do disagree and I can
understand how some might like this movie but I found it a complete waste
of two hours time.

Oooohh.. Bad Form, Jason! You shouldn't ever give away the ending like that,
especially on the list. You even say just now that you didn't want to ruin
it, and then you do! I saw it this weekend, but if I hadn't.. grrrrrr.....
This is a huge pet peeve of mine, and i can't believe that someone on the
list still managed to do it. Totally uncool.
As to some more spoiler stuff... As I say, SPOILERS down below.
Speaking to the movie, it was interestingly photographed and fairly smart,
but a lot of what happens later in the movie happens as if it seems to be
part of a sinister plan, of which it makes great assuptioms about the
lengths the Jeff Bridges character will go to check out his neighbor. That
is, some of the later plot depends on Bridges making certain choices, while
not too unpredictable, are still leaps in judgement. Also, the plot turns on
Bridge's girlfriend and what she sees at the mall, and that is off the scope
of logical thought in relation to Bridges' character from a planning
standpoint for Robbins' guy. Sure, it is reasonable, but in terms of them
being able to plan that and her reactions is a little much. Basically, you
can't think too hard about what happens in the movie, cause after the fact
you begin to question stuff that happens in the movie, especially as the
movie makes the entire plot look like part of a terrorist plan from the
get-go. I did like the ending, as you could almost see in the look on
Bridges' face at that last moment all the wrong choices and stupid things he
did. I even would've liked it better had they just ended the movie there.
But, the movie is fairly decent I thought, but it had PLENTY of cliched bits
(why do directors think we will still be scared by the good guy suddenly
turning around and BOO there's the bad guy, as if it is a big scare. They do
that at least 4 or 5 times in this movie)and even as ironic as the ending
is, you could smell something like that about to happen. It's like a smarter
than average version of a typical thriller. I did like the music, also, and
the direction was better than average, sort of a David Fincher style,
obscure and occasionally blurry, with great angles and shots.
Worth a matinee, sure, but not that great overall.

Friends,
For a nice change of pace, try the 1946 Cocteau Beauty and the Beast . I
loved the Disney version of the fairy tale, which I saw in a theater, and
was pleasantly surprised to discover how much it owes to the 1946 French
film.
I agree with John Woo as to The Killer . It puts to shame most U.S.
action/violence films. I loved it and had a hard time convincing my sons
(teenagers) to watch it with me. They have their typical predjuices against
anything with subtitles in English and not American. They were enthralled by
it! It has a certain charm, what I will fancifully describe as
"melodramatic, neurotic melancholy" to it, a sentimentality and sweetness
which seems rare in action films and even rarer in foreign action films!
And, if you liked Face-Off , you will recognize the influence of The Killer
on it.
You might also want to consider The Seven Samurai, although I found it
somewhat raw, for a foreign action film.

NEW YORK (AP) - Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's vision of "Eyes Wide
Shut" belongs completely to late director Stanley Kubrick. Neither
star read the book the racy new film was based on. "Stanley didn't
want us to," Kidman says in the August issue of Esquire. "He wouldn't
let us." Taken from the Arthur Schnitzler novel "Traumnovelle,"
Kubrick's final film deals with a rich married couple exploring the
depths of their desire, and the jealousy that arises from it. The
movie's laborious two-year filming drew as much attention as its
stars and director. But it made perfect sense to Kidman. Asked why it
took so long, she said, "Because that's what Stanley spent his money
on - time. He didn't spend money on elaborate sets. He didn't spend
it on special effects. He bought time." "Eyes Wide Shut," Kubrick's
13th film, was completed a week before the legendary director died in
March at age 70.

ROME (AP) - It's not just the French who adore Jerry Lewis. The
Venice Film Festival will honor Lewis with a career award and a
showing of "The Bellboy," the comic's 1960 film. Lewis will receive
the Golden Lion career award Sept. 11, the last day of the Venice
festival, when his film about a hapless worker at a Miami hotel will
be screened, organizers said Friday. Festival director Alberto
Barbera praised Lewis, 73, as an "inescapable point of reference for
many comic authors and actors."

TORONTO (AP) - The sex organs of actors in Stanley Kubrick's
much-anticipated final film, "Eyes Wide Shut," have been digitally
removed in the version opening in Canada next week. Canadians wishing
to see the film about the darker side of sexual desire will be fed
the less risque American version rather than the original, unaltered
version bound for audiences in Europe. The decision to electronically
alter the American version of the film - starring real-life husband
and wife actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman - has ignited a
controversy of its own. Kubrick fiercely protected his films from
tampering by studio editors. The cut of the film to be shown in
Canada contains 65 seconds worth of "digital masking" in which
genitalia has been electronically covered up in a climactic orgy
scene toward the end of the film.
Los Angeles-based Warner Bros. said parts of the sex scene were
blurred to satisfy the demands of the U.S classification system, in
which most movies containing sex or violence are awarded a Restricted
rating, allowing people under 18 to see the film as long as they're
accompanied by an adult. If films exceed certain limits - for
instance if they show male genitalia - they get the dreaded NC17
label which stands for "No Children 17 or under." Canada only has an
R rating which rules out anyone under 18. But Canadian classifiers
only get to rate American movies after the original version has
already been changed.

(Launch) - The widow of an 86-year-old extra is suing
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a casting company and several movie production
companies after her husband died of a heart attack on the San
Francisco set of the film "Stigmata," starring Patricia Arquette and
Gabriel Byrne. Barbara Bowers claims her late husband Robert Leon
Bowers was forced to walk nearly a mile wearing a heavy period
costume for a Vatican scene even though he was told the work would
not be strenuous. Bowers also maintains her husband made it clear to
his employers that he was recovering from open-heart surgery. Bowers
was to play a cardinal in the scene, when he collapsed and was
pronounced dead. The suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges
that at no time was production suspended to investigate the death or
pay respects to Bowers.

(AP) - Elijah Wood has been cast in the lead role of Frodo Baggins in
New Line Cinema's live-action trilogy feature "The Lord of the
Rings," based on J.R.R. Tolkien's internationally renowned fantasy
novels. Production will begin shooting in October in New Zealand. The
project marks a major commitment from Wood, since shooting will last
more than a year on each film - "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The
Two Towers" and "Return of the King" - and they will be shot back to
back. Peter Jackson ("Heavenly Creatures") will direct the mythical
project, which tells the saga of a desperate battle against
encroaching evil - a perilous quest to save humanity that falls upon
the shoulder of Frodo, who has inherited a seemingly magic ring from
his elderly cousin Bilbo. The films are intended to be "event
picture" quality, with heavy computer-generated visuals.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - The Austin Powers sequel was too hot,
baby, for the Malaysian censors. The National Film Censorship Board
in the predominantly Muslim country banned "The Spy Who Shagged Me"
this week. Its members decided that there was too much sexual
innuendo and that cutting it out would disrupt the flow of the movie,
the Star newspaper reported Friday. The filmmakers couldn't have been
surprised, since the comedy is packed with sex jokes and
double-entendres. The word "shag" is British slang for sex. Rolf
Mittweg, head of international marketing at New Line Cinema, which
released the comedy, said last month that the Malaysian censors
wanted to change the title to "The Spy Who...Me."

(Launch) - If you suspect you've been hearing about the thriller
"Arlington Road" for some time - you're right. The release date for
the film - which was completed some time ago - was shifted several
times throughout the year. Finally, TriStar locked Friday as the
movie's debut date. "I think they were afraid of the whole Star Wars
thing, and not going up against it," the film's co-star Jeff Bridges
said. "It's also a very volatile subject, and with the Littleton
incident, they wanted to respect." The thriller stars Bridges as a
counterterrorism expert who suspects his neighbor, played by Tim
Robbins, is a mad bomber.

SINGAPORE (AP) - Many Americans associate Singapore with discipline,
stodginess and flogging. But the city-state's first movie export to
the U.S. is a tribute to disco, of all things. The first Singaporean
film shown commercially outside the tiny country is set for its U.S.
premier Aug. 6, director Glen Goei said Friday. Called "That's the
Way I Like It," the film deals with the 1977 arrival of the Western
disco craze in Singapore and its impact on the straight-laced Asian
society. Goei said he hopes the film will counter Singapore's
reputation as a dull country famous for its ban on chewing gum sales
and its 1994 caning of American teen-ager Michael Fay for vandalism.
"It shows that Singapore is not that sterile. They don't really live
in a totalitarian regime. There's disco there," Goei said.
The film portrays a tough guy who takes to worrying about his hair,
wearing satin shirts and entering dance contests. It was released in
Singapore last year under the title "Forever Fever." Some critics
said it was a blatant knockoff of the 1977 American film "Saturday
Night Fever," but Goei makes no apologies. "It's an obvious homage to
Saturday Night Fever and all things disco," he said. "We don't try to
pretend it's completely original." After premiering in Los Angeles
and New York, the film will be shown in the rest of the U.S. and 29
other countries. Disney's Miramax paid $2.65 million for the rights.

(AP) - "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" erupted like a
wildfire in box office-starved Japan, setting an industry opening
weekend record of $12.2 million at 403 screens. The opening beat the
entry of "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" by 20%, according to 20th
Century Fox statisticians. "The Phantom Menace" led the way in
another torrid overseas summer weekend that saw "The Mummy" topping
the $100 million mark, and "The Matrix," "Tarzan," "Austin Powers:
The Spy Who Shagged Me" and "Notting Hill" maintaining a pace that is
reviving the box office wherever they set foot. The George Lucas
prequel, which has reached a foreign cume of $80.5 million, is
expected to top $100 million this coming weekend with second-weekend
results from Japan, holdovers and a U.K. bow.
Altogether, "Phantom Menace" delivered $21.1 million over the weekend
from 2,343 screens in 22 markets, including the second-biggest
opening take ever - after "Titanic" - from Argentina ($1.5 million at
115 screens) and Ecuador ($76,075 at 23). In Israel, with $323,388 at
35 screens, the blockbuster took 35% of the market as Fox's biggest
opening ever.

MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) - A fourth man is facing a five-day jail term
for making off with the new "Star Wars" movie from a local theater.
"I wish I didn't have to be involved in this whole incident," Zach
Snow, 21, told Dunn County Circuit Judge Rod Smeltzer while being
sentenced Monday. "I hope the community and my family can forgive me
for what has happened." A spool of "Star Wars: Episode I - The
Phantom Menace" disappeared from the projection room of the State
Theater May 22. The criminal complaint said the men had plotted to
sneak into the theater for an after-hours viewing of the movie but
decided instead to steal it. The film unraveled and was stuffed into
a car. The men attempted to wash fingerprints off the film before
finally cutting it up and stuffing it into three garbage bags.
Smeltzer ordered Snow, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft, to
spend five days in jail, but unlike the other three defendants, the
judge said Snow could be freed to go to work. Smeltzer also ordered
Snow to pay his share of up to $7,400 in restitution and complete 20
hours of community service. Last month, Charles Phillips, 22, of
Boyceville, Matthew Stearns, 25, and Mark Stearns, 22, both of
Menomonie, also were sentenced to five days in jail after pleading
guilty to misdemeanor theft in a plea agreement with prosecutors.

(Launch) - Nearly two months before "Eyes Wide Shut" bows in Europe,
Stanley Kubrick's last movie has received a thumbs-down from Italian
newspapers - in contrast to its positive reviews in the United
States. "More boredom than scandal," said Rome's La Repubblica,
calling the film "a glossy movie with no emotions" and characterizing
Tom Cruise's performance as "wooden." La Stampa of Turin complained
that Cruise and Nicole Kidman "never plunge into the abyss of sexual
passion." Milan's Corriere Della Sera cast doubt on whether Kubrick,
had he lived, would have allowed Warner Bros. to superimpose computer
effects over an orgy scene - those effects allowed "Eyes" to get an R
rating in the U.S. instead of an NC-17.
The film will have its European premiere at the 56th Venice
International Film Festival in September with a special event gala
screening to be attended by Cruise, Kidman, Kubrick's wife Christiane
and other members of the late director's family.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The much-anticipated collaboration between Martin
Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio inched ever closer to becoming a
reality Monday when Scorsese huddled with Disney executives to work
out a manageable budget for "Gangs of New York." If everything goes
as planned, the long-in-development period piece about Irish hoodlums
will be Scorsese and DiCaprio's next film, with a likely November
start date. Depending on the budget, sources said Rome may be a
location for the movie, which is set in New York during the era of
Tammany Hall's peak of political wickedness. Robert De Niro is in
discussions to star alongside DiCaprio, but no deal has been made.
Sources said Scorsese and his frequent collaborator, Jay Cocks,
recently turned in a rewrite that includes a love story. The new
draft met with the studio's approval. Disney Studios chairman Joe
Roth and Michael Ovitz, head of Artists Management Group - which
represents Scorsese and DiCaprio - discussed the project at last
week's Allen & Co. conference in Idaho. If the project should come
together, this will mark the first major package for fledgling AMG.
One key issue will be how to defray some of the picture's costs, with
sources noting that it will be "a very expensive movie." Disney may
enter into a co-financing arrangement with another studio - possible
partners include Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount Pictures or
20th Century Fox.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Paul Anderson, who directed "Mortal Kombat" and
"Event Horizon," is developing a remake of "Death Race 2000" with Tom
Cruise and Paula Wagner's C/W Productions. "It'll be developed with a
PG-13 rating in mind," said one source involved in the project, who
added that the story line will be different from the original - which
involved scoring points for hitting pedestrians. "Death Race 3000"
will follow a transglobal car race that begins in Tokyo, goes through
Siberia and Europe, crosses the transatlantic road bridge and ends in
Los Angeles. The film's cars, roads and cities will be computer
generated in the same way "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace"
employed computer animation.
-=> * <=-
(AP) - Screenland Pictures is going "West." The Studio City-based
production company has purchased Stu Krieger's screenplay "Pamela
West" for low-six figures, sources confirmed Monday. Stephen Nemeth
of Rhino Films, Adam Fields and Screenland's Adam Del Deo and Ash
Shah are producing the project, which has been described as a
contemporary - albeit reversed - version of 1939 classic "The Wizard
of Oz." In "Pamela West," Dorothy is the shrew, while the Wicked
Witch of the West is sweet and lovable. Instead of a cute pup, Toto
will be a pit bull. Sources have confirmed that the script is
completely original and not based on any other prior material. The
Daniel Ostroff-repped Krieger wrote "In the Army Now," "Monkey
Trouble" and Disney TV's "Smart House." No cast or director has been
attached to "Pamela West." Shooting is expected to begin early next
year.

Howdy Leti,
I saw South Park last week. I dig the show (well, usually)
and I did like the movie. Some parts were hysterical. But I
have to admit, this movie is definately not for
everyone--young kids especially. Normally I'm not such a

after catching the preview on MTV last nite, I heard "Limited release

Doesn't matter much to me now if it's coming out here... I won a pass

23rd. I liked The Haunting, which is the original that none of my friends
