it is my understanding that "eyes wide shut" is completely finished, and is
set for a july 15, 1999 release date in the united states. so, i dont
think that kubrick's death will (or should) interfere with that.
unfortunately, though, kubrick supposedly had another movie in the works -
"a.i." - that he's been working on for a few years now. it's been my
understanding that this movie was supposed to be something along the lines
of: an infant is injected with alien dna, and grows up (obviously) affected
by this. he also grows up in some sort of futuristic, robot-controlled
society. it was supposed to be one of the most technologically advanced
films ever made. also, supposedly, one of the reasons this film has been
in the works for so long is because kubrick was filming the child-star as
he was actually growing up.
if anyone can give any more information about "a.i.", that'd be great.
in any event, the loss of kubrick is definitely a substantial one. he is
definitely one of my favourite directors, and is one of the greatest
filmmakers of all time. we've now lost two of the greatest filmmakers of
all time in a very short period of time: first, akira kurosawa passed away
last october, and now kubrick. i'm just hoping that atom egoyan (my other
top-favourite director) can keep his health.

Maybe you saw Maury Povich unlock the secret of the Pharaoh's tomb on TV. The unabashed highlight came courtesy of Maury's correspondent babe sidekick who, trudging through the tomb, suddenly proclaimed: "Oh My Goodness! I'm Stepping on Bones!" Who said you couldn't desecrate the dead, earn a ratings windfall, and set back the field of archeology a hundred years all at once! Next up, an inside look at the man who put the "sin" in "synergy" as Maury checks aged Viacom and Paramount chief Sumner Redstone for a pulse! Tune in for all the sweeps-week fun!
Did you know Cruel Intentions is based on a book first published in 1782? The film was originally slated to star Sharon Stone, but it was delayed for more than a century until Edison invented the movie business and cocaine was introduced to the gold rush pioneers. According to elder teenager Dick Clark, who was court composer and sweepstakes spokesman to King Louis XIV at the time, the book "had a good beat and you could dance to it." That was the same year old Ben Franklin burped the memorable slogan "a rolling stone gathers no moss," and his Brit pub-mate Mick Jagger replied "I'll remember that!"
The original title, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, had the disadvantage of sounding really, really French. And as the world knows, unless it ends in "maid," "fries," or "kiss," French is one big "no-try zone."
What's new about the oft-told tale? It's now adapted to the world of teenagers! Here, a nasty glance cuts like a Britney Spear. These nude kids on the block have class instead of classes, and the only grades that count are the cumulative notches on Ryan Phillipe's Johnson. And it appears that Ryan's got more notches than the Post Office has P.O. boxes! Coincidentally, Ryan's Captain Anaconda and the USPS both have daily deliveries, long waiting lines, seductively slow service, peculiar automobiles, a Ten-Most-Wanted list, a fixation on slots and boxes, and the ever-present risk of a violent, exploding outburst, if you know what I mean. Ryan's a male carrier all right!
Luscious babes stand at attention like iron filings when this chick magnet passes by. "God, you're beautiful," says Ryan to a fresh-faced hottie stranger he randomly bumps into, "I'm going to take you to lunch." "Okay!" she replies, bubbling over with enthusiasm, her head bobbing just enough to reveal the metal spring connecting her head to her shoulders. Does this chick walk down stairs or slink like a Slinky?
No wonder Ryan complains he's "so sick of sleeping with these insipid Manhattan debutantes." Just in time, the ushers whipped down the aisles tossing Columbia tie-in copies of Webster's Dictionary to hapless teens scratching their heads over codewords like "insipid," as they desperately looked up the word under 'N as in 'N Sync.
Thanks to the crowded theater, I had the opportunity to sit up close, where Buffy's head loomed as big as a brunette house and her breasts hovered like the hot-air balloons they suspiciously resemble. In fact, one old man had a panic attack, claiming Buffy's bountiful boobs caused him to flashback to the Hindenburg explosion. A small price to pay to hear Buffy utter the "F" word and exercise some lesbian tongue gymnastics. Why can't Buffy say "tight, firm ass" on TV, anyway?
Buffy and Ryan are step-sister and step-brother. Just like the Brady Bunch. That is, if the Brady kids spent all their time grinding on each other's laps. Picture Alice the maid as Alice the dominatrix and the Brady dog as Jan's potential bed-partner (if he'd have her) and you've got Cruel Intentions in a nutshell. Hey girls, this is the flick to watch when your mom buys the male stripper for the slumber party!
Coming soon are teen versions of Othello and Hamlet, among others. What with all the classic drama being re-written with a 12-year-old in mind, why stop there? What about the under-12 market, Hollywood? Where's Little Boyz in the Hood? Who's hiding Message in a Baby Bottle? What about All the President's Toddlers, where Jonathan Lipnicki from Jerry Maguire is elected president and immediately legalizes "playing in the street"? What about Reservoir Puppies - featuring Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. Pee in the Pants, and Mr. Poop in the Potty?
The future is tumbling down the steps and spitting up right now, Hollywood! Can't you see it?

DeNiro as a neurotic mob boss and Billy Crystal as his therapist,
finished No. 1 at the weekend box office, beating the teen love-game
tale "Cruel Intentions," estimates showed Sunday. "Analyze This"
earned $17.7 million in its debut. It was a victory of sorts for both
actors, outdoing their most recent openings by millions. "Cruel
Intentions," the latest film geared toward a teen audience, debuted
in second place with a solid $13.2 million. Nicolas Cage's dark
"8mm," about a detective's descent into porn subculture, finished No.
3 with $7 million. "The Other Sister," a love story about two

I was suffering from insomnia a few months ago, and there was this trillogy on
called Nemesis. I missed the first one, but saw the second and third one, only
to see that the story was still continued to the fourth one. This is a horrid
story, but the fact that I started watching it means I would like to see the
end. I would not recommend it to anyone short of people who are REALLY BORED!
My problem is I've gone to the video store and they say there's no such thing as
nemesis 4. I know that's wrong because I checked out the movie data base online
and it says that the movie does exist.
Can anyone helpme?

Stanley Kubrick was one of the most influential directors of the recent past.
Films like 2001, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, Spartacus, Clockwork Orange or
Full Metal Jacket have set new standards in filmmaking while maintaining an
approach that allowed box office successes. He hasn't made many films
recently but I couldn't think of one that would not be worth watching. Check out
everything they are rerunning on TV. Kubrick's death is a great loss of a
director with his own ideas and style, and it's sad that he wasn't able to finish
(or even start shooting AI).

Even at 24 I'm extremely familiar with his works. Some even say he was
the best. He will most certainly be missed.

Actually, 22. Yes, I've seen a space odyssey, but I don't remember it leaving
any lasting impressions on me. Movies that really impressed me with their
direction and fluidity are : the Abyss, Terminator, Suddenly, last summer, The
usual suspects, Witness, and In Dreams-though the story was horrid.
I usually go for movies with an interesting or new plot ideas. I can watch the
worst low tech movie in the world, if the plot is interesting and the actors are
mildly entertaining. eg. The Fifth Element. Excellent acting- I didn't even
know it was Milla Jovitch until the credits.
I'm also a fan of older movies, that's when they really knew how to make them.
No stupid, pointless murders, no gratuitious sex scenes, just real acting and
drama at its best.
Alright, I expect a backlash for this as well.

She MADE that movie, as far as I'm concerned. The special effects were
nice, Bruce Willis was Bruce Willis, and the scenery and music score were
cool, but I thought Milla was the total soul of that film.
Heh. The one true funny moment I remember from The Fifth Element was the
groan from the theater audience when Luke Perry's name appeared on screen
during the opening credits. That still cracks me up...

Well you asked for it. And I think that our generation has lost the
ability to think deeply regarding films, and therefore into the film.
"2001" has to be one of the most important films of all time -- when it was
written, how it was filmed, everything. The time it took was incredible,
made with precision that isn't found in today's cookie cutter environment.
Hell, people still debate today exactly what the monoliths mean, why HAL is
IBM (minus one letter). If you've seen the uncut version *the only way to
see it* and the dark, ominous intro plays for seemingly ever, it sets a
stage that doesn't happen in movies today. The long drawn out montages and
slowly moving craft replicate space in the movie that is hardly replicated
effectively today.
If you ever studied film in college, you would have discovered a number of
things that 2001 pioneered in not only storytelling, but in the are of
movie creation itself. Oh well, I could go on, but why?

Two favorites of mine, except I have to clarify that The Abyss in it's
unedited format (which I own on CAV LaserDisc) is the only version I enjoy.
Sadly, Cameron was forced to release it short, thank god for LaserDiscs.
And Terminator? Great story line, but it's basically good v. evil.
Where's the originality in that?

Ouch. You had me as a woman after my own heart with the "interesting plot"
theme, vs. big budgets or special effects. And the Fifth Element? I
thought that was a very good movie, with a good mix of action, comedy,
special effects, and non-cheesy acting (rare) from Bruce. But you didn't
know Milla was in it? bummer.

So no gratuitous violence? or sex? There's nothing wrong with wanting less
of "too much" sex and violence. Sex and violence are often important to a
story, but there are limits to where it should go.
What do you think about one of the greatest movies (with societal
statements) of all time, Verhoven's RoboCop (uncut)? (You DO know Verhoven
don't you) There's a lot of violence, but it's needed to tell the story of
the poor future, don't you agree?
